- macaronie88, on 08/20/2008, -4/+44they should cut bmx. that ***** is for the xgames
- OasisR123, on 08/20/2008, -2/+30You guys are going to bury me for saying this, but big part of baseball being removed from olympics is because the MLB doesn't want to let their players go.
I mean, they want all the gold pot for themselves, well, they got it. congratulations. - macgon, on 08/20/2008, -1/+23Rugby should be back in the Olympics, it is played in all continents and is quite popular.
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -12/+32Baseball?! This isn't one of those obscure Olympic sports where people use copper mallets to hit rubber balls through the windows of a wooden shack. It's probably the first or second most popular sport in the Western hemisphere, not to mention Japan. What's next? Cutting gymnastics?
- Peko, on 08/20/2008, -2/+20Baseball does not have parity. There are only a handful of nations who are seriously competitive. If MLB, etc, made concessions to allow pro players to go to the olympics it could be more interesting. If you really want to consider baseball, you should also consider cricket, probably moreso. And I don't want to consider cricket.
- Buckwyld, on 08/20/2008, -0/+15I wouldn't mind seeing Cricket and Rugby back in. Tug of War would be good fun too... I can just imagine all those WWE wrAstlers on the American side! LOL
- JacobParker, on 08/20/2008, -0/+15Has anyone seen that one where you have to make a horse dance or something lol. How is that a sport?
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -3/+17I could have sworn I heard baseball was getting cut. It probably should. Cricket! No! They're just starting to train the cheerleaders in that sport. Would be a shame.
- chaseacej, on 08/20/2008, -1/+13No more Jenny Finch??
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! - Cargoship, on 08/20/2008, -2/+14"the sport (Rugby) made the finals for addition to the 2012 Games before losing out to squash and karate."
I can see how karate made it up there, but squash is defiantly not more entertaining then rugby. - indraneel24, on 08/20/2008, -2/+14I really want to see Cricket in the Olympics, and I mean Twenty20 — it's tailor made for television and would spark more interest in the sport around the world.
Edit - those who don't know should read about Twenty20 (and cricket itself) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty20 - solarweasel, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10Olympic TUG-O-WAR !!
They HAVE to bring this back! My money's on Bulgaria. - sixspeed, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10How dare you make light of the great game of Shack Window.
- howdareyou, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10Did someone say my name? What's going on here?
- Ryan32, on 08/20/2008, -2/+11how the hell are they adding BMX and removing Baseball? The Olympic committee can't get anything right.
- FairDinkumMate, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10Baseball is right to be withdrawn, although I'm not so sure about Softball. Regardless of its popularity in the US & Japan, baseball is hardly a 'global' sport, especially when put in comparison to other team sports that aren't included such as Rugby & Cricket.
- mcfara, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9Baseball is gone (unfortunately) http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/8504326/site/2168347 ...
BUT, we've still got the WBC to look forward to! - wayback09, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9KICKBALL IN 2012!!!!
- JitMaster, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9They should add some real games like: tag, capture the flag, Simon says, Red Rover, and Dodgeball. I think Dodgeball between countries would be really fun to watch.
- InternetRules, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9MMA in the olympics!!
- drlha, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9American Football? You realise nobody outside of the USA and Canada gives a ***** about American Football, let alone plays it? I can't think of a less worthy sport to be in the Olympics right now.
- FairDinkumMate, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7A Japanese tug-o-war team comprising a few sumo wrestlers might be competitive!
- davidrools, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7I say we just go back to the ancient olympic games. Definitely bring back the hoplitodromos!
- doktorrocket, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Hear hear! Shack Window is woven deeply into all of western history. It's a little known true fact that the Crimean War was actually begun over the outcome of a disputed Shack Window match.
- drstulsa, on 08/20/2008, -2/+8yeah and darts and why don't we add beer pong while we're at it.
- Varner13, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6And after reading that list I can see why.
- dolemite5005, on 08/20/2008, -2/+8Yes, because letting all of the league's star players go in the middle of the playoff race is a great idea. I'd much rather watch my team compete for the World Series than watch an MLB "Dream Team" play in the Olympics.
- SueprSheepdog, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6GREAT IDEA, lets get rid of sports that have some international competition in favor of sports which have or would have less than 10 participant nations
- dirtyfrog, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6I am assuming you are referring to the biathlon when you say "cross-country target shooting." If so, both of those events are in the winter Olympics.
- ngmcs8203, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6dsmx, you're retarded. Central and most of South America live and breath baseball as well. And Japan isn't the only asian country that loves baseball.
- hardom, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7Oddly enough, I think a couple of those sports you just mentioned get Waaaaaay higher ratings (i.e. Ping-pong) than baseball ever has.
- RyGiL, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6At one time, I thought I read a few articles that said that the London organizers didn't want softball on the list because they did not have an adequate softball stadium and they didn't want to spend the money to build one... especially since there's not much you can do with it after that particular competition is done with (both within the Olympic games and after the games are over).
- DavidGuetta9, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5forget about entertainment, since when do countries have more squash players than rugby players? How did squash even make it to the finals?
- yfph, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6American Football?!? You can count the number of countries producing talent for that sport on one hand, albeit on a hand already missing a few digits after being mangled in an gardening accident.
- DrWho520, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4Baseball is not a sure US gold. The best US players do not play in the Olympics. They are busy chasing pennants right now. The Team USA players are all minor league players. Cuba and South Korea will probably play for the gold this year. Team USA fell to both teams in qualifying pool play.
Cuba, Japan and South Korea are all feeling this loss. Losing softball stings much more since Team USA softball has one gold every year it has been an Olympic sport. The vote on softball was 52-52, not a plurality. In this case, the tie does not go to the runner and softball is out. - KublaiKhan, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4They could move/extend the all-star break, possibly. Though I could still understand why owners wouldn't be crazy about the idea.
And I don't really think there would be much of a "dream team," at least not on par with the one in basketball: many (most?) of the elite MLB players are non-American. So, I guess there still COULD be a "dream team," only it wouldn't be ours. - Halsfield, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4tug of war would be awesome, kind of an obvious metaphor for what the games are really all about. I'd like to see a men+women co-ed tug and seperate sexes also so i can see a bunch of hot athletes get covered in mud, no matter which team loses i win =D
- dolemite5005, on 08/20/2008, -1/+5It's very popular in North America, Latin America, and many Asian countries however it's not that popular in Europe so it gets the axe. But all of the sports that are pretty much ONLY popular in Europe are here to stay.
- aladrin, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4TV where? Sure, they show baseball here, but they probably show those other sports elsewhere in the world.
- psibladeZX, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4You must be indian
- Ryan32, on 08/20/2008, -1/+5Fencing and Badminton come to mind. Along with crap that shouldn't even be there, like tabble tennis, trampoline and handball.
- Moronnoodle, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4We need Rugby Sevens in the Olympics, Its the perfect sport, with short 14 minute games and loads of action. You can get a 12- or 16-team tournament in a weekend.
The IOC will vote on which sports to include in the Olympic Games in Copenhagen, Denmark in October 2009. To assist in the IRB’s ambition of getting Rugby Sevens back in the Olympics by 2016, you can go to http://www.2009congress.olympic.org and Register there to give your feedback. - butterslut, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4I think you meant definitely. Defiantly means to resist something strongly.
- KublaiKhan, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3So any sport that is not the most popular sport in the world shouldn't be included in the Olympics?
The fact is, many Olympic sports have only regional appeal, and many sports are perennially won by the same nations. Baseball is a popular sport, only most of that popularity is concentrated on two continents; in an absolute sense, it has a lot of fans, but they are not spread over a wide area. (Most baseball fans and players are from North and South America, with a smaller enclave in Eastern Asia.)
I'm not a HUGE baseball fan myself, but I understand the argument for keeping it in the Games. I mean, hell, is it any less "global" than, say, badminton? - stopbrorape, on 08/20/2008, -3/+6HOW DARE YOU!! I AM AN AVID FAN OF CROSS-COUNTRY TARGET SHOOTING!!!
- wnysteel, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3"Tug of War would be good fun too... I can just imagine all those WWE wrAstlers on the American side!"
umm, you do know they have strict doping/drug tests in the olympics, right? - warriorscot, on 08/20/2008, -1/+4Outside of the US baseball is actually not very popular at all. Curling is actually quite a big sport, and shooting in general is a popular sport pretty much everywhere.
- sleze, on 08/20/2008, -2/+5Ban Baseball? Let's start with the really obscure sports like Curling and cross-country target shooting.
- dolemite5005, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3Maybe it should be, but it's not.
- Chahrlie5, on 08/20/2008, -0/+3They need to bring back tug of war.
It's such a simple and pure country vs country competition. -
