archibase.net — Make sure to look at #8. "Nude man attacked by babies."
- 1924 diggs
- digg it
- Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66#1 is awesome on so many levels. I think #8 is simply a nude man trying to stomp out the 3DSMax dancing baby menace of '96-'97 once and for all.
- Drealoth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49#8 is clearly a statue of Maddox in his golden years.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4I've seen stranger. Kanamara Festival, anyone?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanamara_Matsuri
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Kanamara%20Matsuri - Experiment626, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's the statue of Charles La Trobe, first Lieutenant Governor of Victoria (who had the foresight to set aside 20% of Melbourne's land area for parks. More info at http://tinyurl.com/ldpx2 (google HTML view of original PDF file).
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@ #1 I didnt even know we had that in Melbourne, Thanx
- Experiment626, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13There was another, much more comprehensive page of strange statues around the world that was dugg more than a month ago that included most of the statues included in this submission, plus a whole lot more (including a statue of Mazinger Z in Spain and another views of the paparazzo pic in Slovakia: http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Strange_statues_around_the_world (note: not my submission)
- Icecream, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Im pretty sure number one is a Fake.
- Icecream, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2My bad, Just googled it, its real, The photo looked sus to me for some reason.
Another Photo of La Trobe:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/splatt/139011261/ - daofma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Experiment626, thank you! Many more on that list, its always fun to see them. I showed a friend who showed his mother.
- Wolfman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1@drealoth: purely an insult to maddox's manhood.
- wogboi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+01046
- Eztli, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I sent #8 to Maddox a while ago. His response: "Holy *****!"
- changyang1230, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I have to admit I was totally awed by this statue too when I first saw it.
The La Trobe statue was (it's no longer there) built in the honor of Lieutenant Charles La Trobe. There is a plaque nearby which explains the design and the character of the statue. I have already forgotten the actual text, but according to this page ( http://www.whitehat.com.au/Melbourne/People/LaTrobe.asp ), "Contemporary artist Charles Robb's tribute to Charles La Trobe is in part a sincere homage to this relatively under acknowledged figure of Melbourne colonial history, but also a critique of Nineteenth Century value systems. Despite his enormous contributions to Melbourne development, La Trobe remains unrepresented in Melbourne's public monuments. Robb's inversion of La Trobe questions the purpose of public monuments, and their meaning in contemporary society." - RareSaturn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I was walking home drunk and saw the the La Trobe statue (#1) for the first time. It was quite scary.
- Coppertop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://s2.supload.com/./files/default/985294488.jpg
#8 from a different angle. The artist must have hated babies. Or he must have been a collection of babies that hated nude men. - splatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was wondering where all of those recent views of that photo of the La Trobe statue on its head on my Flickr site came from :) I must have driven past this statue a dozen times (and always just caught it in the corner of my eye) before i actually stopped and took a photo of it. You can check out the other photo that i took of it here : http://www.flickr.com/photos/splatt/tags/latrobe/
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The last one in Italy is simply fantastic. It almost looks like it was photoshoped in, and I mean that as a compliment.
- oGMo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That's what I thought, it really looks like someone dropped some 3DS legos onto a photo. What *is* it?
- trecephus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15#1 is kick.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Does anyone know where in Melbourne that is? LaTrobe, I'm guessing. I wanna go see it :)
- sime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's in the city. Quite near parliament house. Take the West Preston #11 tram from Collins St, heading east. The status is just after you cross Spring St I think - you can see it from the tram.
- sime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah, according to elastikos down below, the statue is not there anymore. If that is true, it was probably put there as a bit of short-term tourist candy during the recent Commonwealth games.
- nonirose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the statue is now located at La Trobe University, Bundoora.
Its located outside the West Lecture Theatre.
You can get there by catching tram 86 from Bourke St towards Bundoora.
Get off at stop 60 and walk down the footpath toward the library and main buildings,
cross over the round about and continue ahead, its ahead on your right, about 250m from the round about. We had enrollment at uni the other week and it caught my eye, but it wasnt until i attended for O week this week that I had to go back and check if my mind was playing trick on me or not....
rather odd... but i think its cool and unique!
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The third is the best IMO.
- l4nc3r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I'm with ya there. I name it "Where'd the mouse go?"
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I actually think the 2nd one is kinda cool... Last one is by-far the best.
- Toon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Number 3 is like a villian from The Tick. "Feel the wrath of building face!"
And as far as the naked man being attacked by babies goes, I'd like to believe that it's a tribute to a team of infant assassins from hundreds of years ago who helped to free the Norweigans from their oppressive ruler, Flern the Nude. - chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Something I read a while back that I found interesting.
A statue of a man on a horse and the horse has one leg up means the man was injured in battle but survived.
Horse has both legs up means he died in battle.
And all four legs on the ground means the man survived the battle uninjured.
One of those bits of trivia I find interesting.- rritterson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Common urban legend, but actually not true:
http://www.snopes.com/military/statue.htm
- rritterson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Common urban legend, but actually not true:
- colonelmustard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3third is total win
- Beelzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31 3 and 9 are awesome
if you didn't know about it then number 9 could freak you out
"honey, there is a guy over there taking pictures of us."- gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1heh, I thought it was a gun...
- subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The one in Bratislava, Slovakia would weird me out. I know if I lived there, every time I walked by it and it caught the corner of my eye I'd think it was a person. It would literally be a pain in the neck from all the double-taking I'd do.
- sutech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He isn't as freakish as it looks... There is also another similar statue, but he looks on people from manhole.
I live in Bratislava and think all the statues are nice.... Even those freakish cows.
- sutech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He isn't as freakish as it looks... There is also another similar statue, but he looks on people from manhole.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is hilarious. I like the shark. I wish I could have one of those (haha)
- link470, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1lol ya I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the shark
- coldshuts, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Awesome!
- Crizack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My favorites are "man with head in wall" and "baby-fighter".
- Germanicus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The last one is very well done. At first glance I thought it was a hologram, I had to stare to make sure it is real.
- deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wonder why they made the French finger?
- SPLASTiK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The "nude man attacked by babies" is by Gustav Vigeland. He has a whole park of his works in Oslo as the goverment paid for him to be an artist as long as he donated all his work. One of my favourites... we also share the same birthday.
http://www.fortunecity.com/westwood/arch/769/Vigeland/
Has a bunch of pictures of his scultptures, very interesting stuff. Also try a Google Image search for Vigeland for more. - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I really like the whole big brother theme of #9
http://tasmania.globat.com/~archibase.net/dl/articles/monuments/9.jpg - Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8that's one massive thumb for france to keep up its ass
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7In case you're american, why are you keeping their statue of liberty?
- oMeSSiaHo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The horse thing is an urban legend. At my GFs campus they two giant blocks sticking out the ground that always reminded me of a thumb. They also had a hairbrush that for whatever reason always sorta freaked me out.
- INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8LOL @ the baby attack statue... Made me think of the episode of South Park where the kids try to save movies from their directors and "Free hat" the serial baby murderer.
"He killed them in self defense!" - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here in Vegas they have a couple of statues of random people that look like they're walking into an intersection.. causing the occasional accident.
- Adenosine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dugg, but where's SF's infamous Yoda statue? http://myextralife.com/ftp/yoda.jpg
- link470, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4dude thats not strange, thats just freakin awsome.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow...i loved them all, I wonder how many tries it took to get the first to stand upright...
- waitingforjune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Are you sure the last one is real? It doesn't look like it's casting a shadow to me. If it really is real, that's pretty trippy.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4#8 is indeed cool but they should've included the GIANT penis made out of human bodies that's in that same park in Oslo.
Must be at least 100 feet tall.- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Scratch that. It's ~55 feet tall. Still huge though.
http://image02.webshots.com/2/4/63/68/47146368CKazwZ_ph.jpg
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Scratch that. It's ~55 feet tall. Still huge though.
- mdsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Belgium seems to have a few weird statues too:
Boy peeing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manneken_Pis
Guy throwing a giant's hand into the river (Antwerp literally means "hand throw"):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silvius_Brabo
(close up) http://www.ukstudentlife.com/Travel/Tours/Belgium/Antwerp/Brabo.jpg - Innagadadavida, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I've seen the second one (the naked women with the exposed fetus), personally, I thought it was a little grotesque to be in public like that. It was slightly hidden in a buildings courtyard, but the courtyard was accessible on the sidewalk, plus you could see the statue in the reflection of the building.
Also... What's up with the fat dudes with small wieners?- mikevickrocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was just gonna ask that! Why is there some sort of obsession with small "privates?" (to put it nicely)
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3What are we 12 now? Penises, they're called penises.
- TrustyChords, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2One of my clients is in the high-rise where the guys head is in the building.
The Ernst and Young Building in downtown LA. - daofma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The sky is cloudy and the other people aren't casting shadows either. Its a very weird effect, but the picture looks legit.
- bmson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think all countries have there share of a strange statues.
We have few wierd ones in Iceland.
http://vehicle.me.berkeley.edu/~dcoatta/Iceland/Reykjavik/Fullsize/Reykjavik-222026-Church1statuesclose1.jpg
http://photos1.blogger.com/img/170/2901/640/04770006.jpg - jkleinfeld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i saw the one in new york
very good list
although the longer ones are a lot better - Higgins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3don't forget the sword fight statue in prague
http://www.davidcerny.cz/EN/piss.html - elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The LaTrobe one is excellent, gone past it many times in the morning. My girlfriend thought that vandals had turned it on its head! It has been removed now after being there for a year, not sure where it is now though.
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is another interesting statue in Bratislava:
http://koti.welho.com/tkuusio/Matkakuvat/Wien/photos/Bratislava%20-%20Men_at_work.jpg - sathia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1#10 location: http://tinyurl.com/jnwb8 via maps.google.com
- fazered, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Yeah this is much better: http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Strange_statues_around_the_world
- sandig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It was nice to see the shark in the roof in oxford. I live there yeh see...
- midgetpoker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is quite a nice background to the "headington shark" available at:
http://www.headington.org.uk/history/misc/shark.htm
From the article:
"Oxford City Council tried to get rid of the shark on the grounds that it was dangerous to the public, but engineers inspected the roof girders that had been specially installed to support it and pronounced the erection safe." - mesh606, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pretty sure #1 is a pshop comp. Wheres the shadow for the huge palm behind the statue gone? unless the palm is part of the statue.
- splatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definately real...i should know as its my photo :) You can find the other photo of this statue that i put up on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/splatt/tags/latrobe/
- SwtRose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well this was interesting. LOL
- aukxsona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The nude guy attcked by killer babies...well it gives me a B movie Idea...attack of the space babies, their cute, cuddly, and killer...and now they want to teethe on YOU! Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh run comming to a side street (alley) theater near you.
- minerva43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is no way that #10 from Turin/Torino is real.
- orato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This story is not about a statue, but this guys surely deserves one. Read about "the luckiest man in the world" here: http://www.orato.com/node/6
