- MCMLXXXII, on 11/30/2007, -0/+21No. Saloon is a Sedan. Station Wagons are called Estates there.

- CabesMojo, on 11/30/2007, -12/+12Guess you don't think tow trucks are handy. Pretty sure my big truck was handy pulling an audi out of a snowbank of a mountain pass. Good luck getting some one unstuck in your civic.
- zengonzo, on 11/30/2007, -2/+38He said 'in traffic' not 'in mountain'.
- CabesMojo, on 11/30/2007, -20/+4I'm guessing you're ignorant enough not to think there is traffic in the mountains. Ever been to nationally renowned ski resort?
- Gir53457, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Yes, and they have Highways and main roads.
- CabesMojo, on 11/30/2007, -6/+2I love how I'm getting severely dugg down because people disagree with me pointing out there is such thing as mountain traffic. Sorry folks, digg all ya want, you're just upset you can't drive your prius in the snow or uphill.
- Gir53457, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1Ski resorts don't count as mountain traffic, Priuses have plenty of torque to get up a snowy hill with chains.
- zengonzo, on 11/30/2007, -3/+16Does driving a tow truck make you so grumpy, or is it the dreaded mountain traffic?
- CabesMojo, on 11/30/2007, -1/+10Nah its the elitist big vehicles are evil attitude that sets me off. I don't drive a tow truck just a 3/4 ton pick up, I used to spend 6 months of the year as a pro snowboard instructor in Tahoe so I see lots of mountain traffic, and a lot of need for the larger vehicles. I still spend a lot of times commuting through the Reno-Tahoe area so snow and hazardous road conditions are common.
Not like I would drive one a big city though. My truck in a pain in the ass in the bay area, nothing down there is made for something its size. - Haecceity, on 11/30/2007, -0/+17I think most sane people recognize that big vehicles can be useful and in fact are indispensable in some situations. But then you have massive SUVs that never go off road or even out of the city, clog up the roads, roll over at the drop of a hat, crush smaller vehicles, clog city streets, and are driven by egomaniacs who think they own the road and are invincible. Those tend to piss some of us off. But in the mountains? Hey, a big vehicle is often very appropriate. And thanks for towing that car.
- CabesMojo, on 11/30/2007, -1/+7Haecceity it wouldn't let me reply to you so I had to here.
Well thank you, now I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I think its more of an issue of driver ignorance then the vehicle's fault. How many times has some one in a small sporty car cut you off or almost caused an accident because he thinks he is in the Indy 500 on the free way? If you don't have a use for the vehicle then you probably shouldn't drive it. But if some one chooses to drive a larger vehicle, which is their right, and does so responsibly is shouldn't be an issue. - DarkSamus, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4I'm cancelling my ski trip to vermont, last thing i need is traffic on a mountain
- CabesMojo, on 11/30/2007, -1/+10Nah its the elitist big vehicles are evil attitude that sets me off. - sgtpppr, on 11/30/2007, -2/+4I've never seen someone so militantly pro-tow truck. You see everything at least once on the Web.
- CabesMojo, on 11/30/2007, -20/+4I'm guessing you're ignorant enough not to think there is traffic in the mountains. Ever been to nationally renowned ski resort?
- sgtpppr, on 11/30/2007, -1/+3Too bad the other 99.99% of his time he's involved with a tow truck, it'll be doing 40 in a 65.
- zengonzo, on 11/30/2007, -2/+38He said 'in traffic' not 'in mountain'.

- estat, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6I hope that someone in mainstream news picks this up and makes a big deal about it. It's sad that it would be bigger news if it was a fatal multi-car accident.

- Seaborgium106, on 12/01/2007, -2/+4no act of charity goes unresented...
- VenDrake, on 11/30/2007, -23/+5Insurance is not involved in any way - no accident occurred.
There was a small collision between the truck and the rogue vehicle, but that collision was not an "accident". You may call it an "on purpose" if you like, but than you just sound funny.
Because the collision was intentional, the insurance company will not pay for the repairs, they will not adjust his rates, and they will not "drop" him. They'll simply send him a politely worded form letter informing him that his repairs are his own concern.
Not the greatest outcome, but better than a rate hike or a drop.- HenvY, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1What you said is 'typicalusername's point...this guy is going to get a bill for saving lives. And people wonder why you don't hear about stuff like this more often?
- MxM111, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3And who should get the bill instead?
- jmreid, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2God?

- MxM111, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3And who should get the bill instead?
- archimago42, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8You've never had insurance have you?
- VenDrake, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1You've never intentionally caused a collision and tried to bill insurance for the damages have you?
- HenvY, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1What you said is 'typicalusername's point...this guy is going to get a bill for saving lives. And people wonder why you don't hear about stuff like this more often?
- georgemason01, on 11/30/2007, -1/+59If he tells me who his insurance provider is I'll be happy to give them a call and let them know what I think.
- mctwists, on 12/01/2007, -2/+1whats that gonna do?
- zspeed78, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12Well, not exactly sure who will cite an accident.. the dead person wont file a claim, he wont file a claim probably to have his bumper fixed, and the CHP is pretty smart, when they write the report (if its even an 'accident report'..) they wont label him at fault. Furthermore, a 50 yr old man doesnt get dropped from his insurance by causing one 'technical' accident with very low payouts, if any.
- TridenTBoy, on 11/30/2007, -1/+12Yeah, being a hero isn't covered in his insurance probably.
- WayneCA, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1Only if the other car wasn't covered by the same insurance company. If it was covered by them, then he saved an at fault multi-car accident caused by the guy who died at the wheel and would therefore have saved the insurance company a ton of money.
- wolfkeeper, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1He might be able to claim on the womans insurance, because she still caused the accident. I mean, there clearly was an accident- he didn't deliberately go out to damage her car, it was fallout from her losing consciousness, which was the real accident; and he was minimising the chances of her dying.
- GeckoSlayer, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1And the Jeep hit him in the rear, and it is always the rears fault when that happens.
- wolfkeeper, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1He might be able to claim on the womans insurance, because she still caused the accident. - zelgadissan, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3Not the world, insurance companies.
- DeadFox1, on 12/01/2007, -0/+2I didn't get any sense of "accident" from this at all.. he gently put his SUV in front of the jeep. probably only caused a scratch.

- apec766, on 11/30/2007, -1/+54It's better that she was the only one who died (which, as it seems, was going to happen regardless). The guy prevented a massive pileup that likely would've cost far more lives.
- bluesnowmonkey, on 11/30/2007, -6/+5Yeah, I read the article. I saw that quote. Do you have anything else to add to the conversation?
And the reason I'm commenting instead of just burying is that I want to make a statement about the reason for burying it.
- tamacurtis, on 11/30/2007, -3/+102I wish I could digg this twice. We need to hear more of the good things people do in this world than the bad. Take that CNN.
- onwardknave, on 11/30/2007, -4/+17Bad news deserves to be shown as much (or more than) good news. Reporting those who act unjustly deters others from doing the same, and helps promote change toward fixing those injustices. There's a difference between informative and gratuitous coverages of violence. Fortunately in this case, the good news is also informative. CNN's sensationalist, biased coverage (e.g. Wolf Blitzer's softball to Hillary in the debate), or pop culture concern (Anna Nicole, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton) is more troublesome than how little "good news" they show.
- snapcase, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13But on the flip side, showing nothing but bad news that showcases the darkest sides of humanity fosters a pessimistic outlook in those who watch and read it. If people think that there's nobody left in the world willing to take a moment to help another human being, then that makes them just a bit less likely to as well.
There needs to be a balance, and in all honesty it should be reported to reflect reality. The good with the bad. - whizkid, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4I disagree that "reporting those who act unjustly deters others from doing the same".
With the heavy volume we get I feel as though it is more likely to promote an "everybody else is doing it" syndrome. We'd like to think that as we become adults we grow out of this, but I'm not so sure we do entirely. - fuzzmeister, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1If CNN ever shows a "happy" story, it always seems to be about a puppy or other furry animal.
- snapcase, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13But on the flip side, showing nothing but bad news that showcases the darkest sides of humanity fosters a pessimistic outlook in those who watch and read it. I want to know what the hell happened to the Jeep driver... ??- bcat, on 11/30/2007, -3/+22I can't believe you're getting dugg down. I certainly applaud the man in the SUV's actions, which probably prevented a multi-car pileup, but I'm really curious about the person driving the Jeep.
- DeadFox1, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1I dugg him up. hopefully others will do the same...
- davewashere, on 11/30/2007, -34/+10From a better version of the story:
"a doctor from the hospital indicated that the Jeep driver was overcome by smugness while in San Francisco, causing massive internal bleeding and severe flatulence inhalation."- gavin422, on 11/30/2007, -3/+15I don't know what it is with people who feel the need to turn everything into a joke.
- GhostToon, on 12/01/2007, -0/+2Some people don't know how express the right emotion so they end up expressing a very wrong one and looking like an ass, or he is an ass.....you decide.

- cw1242, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3I've been behind somone who was right on the verge of going into a diabetic shock. The symptoms described in the story sound very familiar to what I witnessed. Before the people I was behind pulled over they were all over the road, veering and stopping spiratically. Finally when they did pull over I pulled up next to them to see what the problem was; the driver was semi-conscious, his wife was trying to get him to and take a glucose shot. I called 911 and waited for the ambulance, unfortunantley I never found out how it all turned out after they left.

Him: Your welcome.
DId everyone else miss the part where he stopped it from being a pile up accident with fatalities???- GeckoSlayer, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3Did you miss the part where insurance companies want money?
- GeneralGore, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Not everyone has the same insurance and his car could have been unaffected in the accident if he chose not to do anything.
- john2kx, on 11/30/2007, -9/+4Insurance company: You are on the way to destruction
- egonSchiele, on 11/30/2007, -4/+5wow, this man is truly a hero.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 11/30/2007, -2/+138The real question is: Why isn't there any fencing between the carriageways on the Golden Gate Bridge?
- PJ1967, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6I thought the same thing. Expense? Weight?
- NuclearBunny, on 11/30/2007, -0/+57because they scare the horses
They sometimes change the configuration of the lanes. based on traffic patterns, i.e. more cars going north vs. south- mypreciousss, on 11/30/2007, -0/+17Yep.. they have reversible lanes on these highly used bridges and tunnels to accommodate increased traffic in a particular direction during rush hour.
- supermanred, on 11/30/2007, -6/+1Wow. In Canada we'd just build another bridge with protective median dividers instead... You Americans really are strange.
- privatepublic99, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5Umm ever driven over the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver? The center lane changes direction daily and there's only painted lines separating traffic.
- GhostToon, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1@supermanerd
The golden gate bridge is a national landmark. I don't know about Canada but we don't like messing with they way ours look.
- mypreciousss, on 11/30/2007, -0/+17Yep.. they have reversible lanes on these highly used bridges and tunnels to accommodate increased traffic in a particular direction during rush hour.
- ahecht, on 11/30/2007, -0/+33That's a good question. They currently use cones because they adjust the number of lanes in each direction based on traffic flow (so morning rush hour will have 8 lanes one way and 4 the other, and evening rush hour will have the opposite). However, other bridges like the Tappan-Zee in NY and the Coranado in San Diego, CA use a moveable concrete barrier that is shifted to adjust for rush hour using a Zipper Machine such as this one:
http://www.roadstothefuture.com/Zipper_I95_JRB.htm ...
In the case of the Coranado bridge, they were having frequent crossover accidents before they installed the system, and they have been completely eliminated since.- SkippyDoorknob, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3There have been off-and-on talks about implementing something like that on the GG bridge for years. They'll probably just keep on talking for years and nothing will ever happen.
- MCMLXXXII, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6That Zipper machine has to be one of the coolest inventions ever!
Hooray for human ingenuity! - Frost9999, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Same system also in place on the Auckland Harbour Bridge in New Zealand. There was a fatality almost every day until that movable barrier was installed.
- GhostToon, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1There worried about how it will change the look of the bridge since it is a important landmark. Same reason the don't put up higher fences to stop jumpers.
- jonathankimmm, on 11/30/2007, -2/+1wellll actually there was no original question to being with... sooooo i dont understand when you say, "the real question is...."
lawlry
- bendiggn, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8Good for him!
Does anyone know if his insurance covered any damage to his truck?
I am not betting on it. They really should. Let's make a big stink about it until they do.
There really needs to be some sort of hero clause in insurance claims that allow people to make these quick decisions without worry of financial burden. My insurance is very expensive and I know it would enter my mind if this happened to me.- coleki, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1i wonder if we could somehow set up a donation page to collect money to send him for damages to his truck, if there were any...
- MerryMortician, on 11/30/2007, -2/+3Hero clause? cool! Sir, I just rammed that tree to save the kitten please fix my car.
- bendiggn, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5This would obviously be pertaining to saving human life and backup by police investigation.
- MerryMortician, on 11/30/2007, -3/+1RLY?
- bendiggn, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5This would obviously be pertaining to saving human life and backup by police investigation.
- kimmer1, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1there was no damage to his tuck.
- slashbot, on 11/30/2007, -3/+12Nice, but still unfortunately the sad ending. At least he prevented some accidents, though I don't believe they would have been "fatal multi car accidents"...
- dema, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6You've apparently never travelled on the Golden Gate bridge. They would've been lucky in just one of the 50 closest drivers were paying attention when the Jeep crossed over.
- washburn085, on 11/30/2007, -13/+4i doubt an idling Jeep would mess up his truck, so he prob has no reason to claim it on his insurance, unless the Jeep lady's family sues, which is likely.
- ronnsprocket, on 11/30/2007, -4/+7this really needs to be dugg up. this is honestly one of the most ballsy things I have ever heard. I don't know if I could intentionally push another car with my own without being 100% of the situation.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 11/30/2007, -5/+1Really? Why not?
- setdosa, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1He wasnt pushing. He was in front of the Jeep, and he guided it away from oncoming traffic. It is much more difficult than pushing it.
- BlackGlenn, on 11/30/2007, -6/+6If he wants his insurer to pay for the damages to his vehicle his rates will go up, as he intentionally caused a collision with the Jeep. Regardless if he is considered to be a hero or not, in California at least insurers are required to treat all cases and insureds equally.
Starting a campaign would be fruitless, because for the insurer to selectively decide not to jack up his rates would be inviting a fine from the Dept. of Insurance for the reasons I stated above. Guess who they fear more? Dept. of Insurance or Digg?- icefairy17, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1No
- Schda, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2I'm not an insurance adjuster, but it's my understanding that if no claim is made your rates don't go up. I'v ehad an accident in MN and while I reported it to my insurance agency (as per the law) my rates did not go up as I didn't claim anything.
- kimmer1, on 11/30/2007, -0/+27They were able to get him on NPR the other day and it was even more amazing to hear him tell the story.
bendiggn-- he said there was absolutely no damage to his truck because it was such a low impact collision and the only damage to the woman's car was that her license plate fell off.
So sad the woman died but at least he was there to give her a chance.
I wish there were more new stories like this - TritonX, on 11/30/2007, -1/+7Insurance company are getting a lot of love today.
- azimir, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4It's all the love they deserve, and a little extra because we're feeling generous.
- supermanred, on 11/30/2007, -1/+1The moment insurance becomes non-mandatory that whole industry will take a dive.
- ellabee, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13Score one for good guys. I bet he didn't even think twice before taking action. Dugg.
- compgeek, on 11/30/2007, -7/+14God bless this guy he did what he could to save possibly 50-60 lives too bad to hear that the other driver died at the hospital
If I ever met this guy I'd give him one hell of a handshake and offer to buy him a dinner he is a true hero
MAD RESPECT
dugg- slashbot, on 11/30/2007, -2/+650-60 lives??? There were few enough people on his side to allow him to pull his maneuver safely.
It would be safe to assume the same would be the case for the other side. 50-60?
- slashbot, on 11/30/2007, -2/+650-60 lives??? There were few enough people on his side to allow him to pull his maneuver safely.
- Nev9, on 11/30/2007, -3/+16Wow, people are actually praising a truck in San Francisco. Normally they'd be keying it or something
- AnimalTaglits, on 11/30/2007, -0/+40What is Batman doing in San Francisco?
- andshewas, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6Kudos to that guy...so many others would have been in way too much of a hurry to actually stop and do something about the impending tragedy.
- jquipp, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7Definitely a hero in my opinion.
- CrazedLeper, on 11/30/2007, -2/+3That guy deserves a medal. And most people who got one don't.
- kuppoppo, on 11/30/2007, -3/+4Woo! Mill Valley! Hometown pride.
- oxygen911, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1don't.....
- lollavid, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7I drive across this bridge every day to work. There is no center divider, so if someone drifts towards the middle they will enter oncoming traffic going 50pmh (45mph speed limit). This certainly could have been ugly. Good thinking!
- Platondas, on 11/30/2007, -6/+0A real American, I hope he gets that medal.
- WhoDoneIt, on 11/30/2007, -6/+0huh? Only a real American can be a hero? Chances are he was an immigrant with the pick-up truck, or maybe G.I. Joe.
- razrielle, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2A real American can still be an immigrant, A real American is a person who helps his fellow man over here
- WhoDoneIt, on 11/30/2007, -6/+0huh? Only a real American can be a hero? Chances are he was an immigrant with the pick-up truck, or maybe G.I. Joe.
- jackspade, on 11/30/2007, -0/+14I'd like to think I'd do the same thing but I probably wouldn't. I'm a loser.

- PamalaLauren, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Well good for him. Not a lot of people would have done that. Quick thinking on his part. It's too bad about the woman though, I wonder what happened?
- ronaldinho, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4I'm digging this, but is there any actual article covering it? Just wondering......I'm buying him dinner if I ever see this guy, dude's got balls to match his truck
- colobikeguy, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1Do you mean: http://www.truckaddons.com/Catalog/subpages/BullsB ...
- iluvkegs, on 11/30/2007, -10/+4"a driver on the Golden Gate became unconscious and her Jeep Grand Cherokee came to a stop in the second lane from the center divide" that explains why women drive the way they do lol jk
- jonnypyro, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1man i must have just missed that. i was up in the bay area for a week
- menos, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9Article in the SF Chronicle
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2 ... - bdh8, on 11/30/2007, -2/+1Does anyone know how exactly he "led" the jeep across the two lanes? The article's pretty vague in the description of this.
- zspeed78, on 11/30/2007, -1/+3Enough with the 'rates will go up' BS.. the dead person wont file a claim, he wont file a claim probably to have his bumper fixed, and the CHP is pretty smart, when they write the report (if its even an 'accident report'..) they wont label him at fault. Furthermore, a 50 yr old man doesnt get dropped or increase his premium by causing one 'technical' accident with very low payouts, if any.
Not everyone gets treaded like a 19 yr old in a mustang. - xtc46, on 11/30/2007, -8/+1wtf...why is this such a big deal? he pulled in front of a car that was barely moving then stopped so it wouldn't roll into another lane. If it had rolled into the other lane, the oncoming drivers would have had lots of time to see it doing so since it was moving so slow. I mean its awesome that he did it, but at MOST he should be honored for not causing a traffic Jam that would have ensure had they just called the police and let them do it. Saying that he stopped a multi car accident is just be sensationalist.
- honus, on 11/30/2007, -7/+1I'm surprised at the Digg response to this. No one's brought up that it was a gas sucking F350.
You all hate trucks so much. - jake61, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4He is a hero. Not necessarily because he would've stopped an ugly multi-vehicle accident, but because he did the right thing. Because of this type of people, I love America.
And I'm also glad that this article didn't bring on the usual vulgar, pessimistic, and racists commentary that we Diggers are capable of. MORE DIGGS FOR TRUE HEROES! Less for junk!- setdosa, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2I don't hate/dislike America, but this can happen anywhere in the world, and its because you will find good people everywhere. One more thing, theres more than this reason to love america.
- Fizban140, on 11/30/2007, -9/+2Only in America!! LOLZ!
Oh wait, that doesn't apply here. - subarumaniac, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6i live in SF and i heard it first on digg; i need to stay offline and get to work

- patflex, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Hearing a story where one cares for strangers (when it's not part of their job description) is so rare. Warmed my heart to the core!

- BufordT, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised he didn't get a ticket for reckless driving from some ticket happy trooper claiming to be simply upholding the rule of law.
