- sepultura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+117Wouldn't walking away hurt after having delivered a baby? I mean with all the stretching and the "just had a baby come out" feeling (not that I would know). On second thought, I don't really want to know, don't tell me.
- maretten, on 10/12/2007, -49/+14Ewww! Is that woman pooping on the sidewalk? Oh, wait, nevermind, its just a baby.

(and I'm pro choice) - wtfersk8s, on 10/12/2007, -7/+178so what about her umbilical cord... she just chew it off?

You're a moron... the umbilical cord comes out of the mother with the placenta (AKA the AFTERBIRTH) - EzarKun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+71I am suspecting this may not be her first time.

I see very little difference between this and *partial*-birth abortion, at least. Baby's ready to come out, but ***** if I'm going to be inconvenienced by it.
There are plenty of adoption agencies that would have taken the baby; this lady has no excuse. - DontGivaShit, on 10/12/2007, -14/+7"a 5-pound, 12-ounce baby boy was found alive and kicking"
that's a decent size baby for being born to a homeless person - SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -37/+31Luckily, abortion prevents us from seeing most of this happen. We get the comfort of knowing the baby died before it had a chance at life, instead of being alive but lying on a sidewalk. We feel good and at the same time women get to keep their "rights."
- hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -23/+12the baby was probably ugly.
- Nbonez5, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28@ Sepultura
In my experience with delivery, having given birth to 4 children, i find it is quite relaxing to go on a little jog, just to get rid of the stretch marks. I mean 9 months of no running makes me feel fat and pregnant like. - AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -27/+13@ cantitoe:
What's the difference between killing you and an abortion?
Answer: You've been born.
That baby had been born. Was alive. There's no ***** excuse, especially not with out laws enabling a mother to leave a baby at a police station, no questions asked.
(I'm pro-life. Except in the case of idiots like you, who apparently think that leaving a born-baby to die is somehow okay.) - hardcrocodile, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9@maretten
If she's giving birth on the sidewalk, she probably WAS pooping on the sidewalk. - EmperorAwesome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I wonder where she went to finishing school.
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Dug up just because that is the first thing that came to mind when I read the title WHAT THE *****
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@wtfersk8s - the cord is connected to the placenta. After the baby the placenta is born. So she left the baby with the cord and the placenta all together.

edit: goddammit, scoot beat me to it. - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16FTA, she appeared to be psychotic. Maybe, from years of stimulant use. Not much different from many youngsters in order to be allowed in school. I hate to say it, but the guy from the article was right. Being born in public was probably great for the child. In private, it could have found itself in a garbage disposal or dumpster.
It is sad that woman was pregnant. I doubt she even understands the actions which lead to the conception. It would not be too surprising to find out she was a crack whore putting out for whatever got her another hit. I only hope I am wrong for the the kid's sake. After hearing about this woman, I suppose Sheryl Crow is still up for Woman of the Year. - aukxsona, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10I would have picked the baby up and walked away like nothing happened. Hey if she doesn't want him ..I do.
- nazsco, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2aukxsona, that was sad... or sick... I can't make my mind. Ok, i will settle with sad.
- unpluggedboy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Well at least she didn't attempt a partial-birth-abortion on the spot.
- aukxsona, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16How is it sad and sick to pick up an unwanted child and raise him as your own. I have plenty of my own but I was raised there is always room for one more...and obviously he needed a home. Sadder to leave him to die...right?
- BlackMask, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1With all seriousness, man, I have seen plenty of weird and sick incidents in my 23 year old life but this is probably the worst. I feel both sorry and happy for the child. Congratulations my soldier! First of all when he would grow up, he would eventually know that nobody cared for him after he was born and knowing so would make him a fighter and tough. Secondly, the baby, when grown-up enough, would hopefully try to create awareness among selfish and mentally retarded bitches to make them more caring towards themselves and their kids. I pray to the Almighty for the baby's good health and a bright and rich future. May the ghosts of heavenly soldiers be with you and protect you from the material earth's woes and worries.
- solodude59, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2this would have made for a GREAT dead baby joke... :-)
- oscarsonthepond, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3The difference between this and an abortion is in an abortion the mother has the doctor kill her baby, while here she just left it but it at least still had a chance of survival. As horrible as this was, it's not at all on par w/ how horrible an abortion is.
- PaperMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@ oscarsonthepond - Abortion doesn't kill the baby. It terminates the fetus. Up to the point of a legal abortion you are doing little more than getting rid of a (presumably) unwanted parasite. And no, I'm not trying to be an ***** in fact, my wife and I are expecting our first child this summer. You ask any woman who is or has been pregnant what it is like and I'm sure she will tell you that in the beginning they are almost always tired and need to ramp up the amount of food that they eat. The woman's body diverts everything to the fetus first and sends the left overs to the rest of the body. The only substantial difference between the fetus and a parasite is that the body is directing the nutrients and blood to the fetus instead of it hijacking everything.
- openyoureyes17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6howard k. stern has just stepped up as the baby's father
- peterandbeer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Exactly what kind of crap is that
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very misleading story submission. Yes the mother gave birth and walked away which makes everyone think "what the *****!?!?!" and hate her. However, when you read the story, it clearly mentions she was exhibiting pyschotic behavior and appeared to have a real mental illness, not just stupidity.
It also says that the sidewalk birth is probably the best thing that could have happened to the child. - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@BackMask: you can get off your high horse now.
the article reports that the woman exhibited psychotic behavior and the police suspected her of suffering from mental illness. she also has no known local address, so she's probably a vagrant. a lot of homeless people in the U.S. suffer from some kind of mental illness, which is why they have difficulty holding a job (aside from the vicious pattern caused by being in such a position).
so unless you're willing to lobby for legislation to increase mental health facilities in urban areas with a large homeless population, maybe you should stop pretending to be morally superior to the mother with your self-righteous condemnation of her actions. she is likely as much a victim as the infant. mentally ill homeless persons are victims of our societal shortcomings, and your judgment of such an individual, calling her a "mentally retarded bitch," exhibits precisely the same lack of empathy and cold indifference towards these poor individuals that allows the suffering of this significant population to continue to be ignored.
most other developed nations have nearly eliminated the problem of homelessness in their society with social safety nets and publicly-funded mental health facilities for those who truly are incapable of taking care of themselves--as this woman clear is. yet we in the U.S. continue to villainize the poor, and treat these hapless individuals with the greatest disdain. we would rather lock up our poor in prisons than to help them or afford them the basic dignity that any human-being deserves. perhaps if she were being taken care of in a mental health facility--which provide counseling in addition to physical necessities--she would not have had to give birth to a child she was not capable of taking care of, or perhaps the medical staff would have overseen the pregnancy and adoption process, instead of leaving it to chance that a security guard saw the woman giving birth on the sidewalk.
your false sense of moral superiority over a mentally indigent woman is undeserved.

- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8"Whats the difference between this and just having an abortion?"
The baby is not even human when you are aborting (depending on when you are choosing to have the abortion). - anonydigg, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9A dead baby/ aborted fetus is by order of magnitude better than a suffering adult. She probably couldn't afford an abortion. The state should pay for abortions.
- tampersanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, if people had more value for human life, maybe this woman and the hooker in Oakland would have gotten the care they needed to prevent both of these situations.

(After they washed of course) - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2the mentally ill should be sterilized... sounds a lot like eugenics. it's rather arrogant to think that you have the right to decide who can have children and who can't. this woman was obviously suffering from mental illness and should have been in a mental health facility. she needed to be taken care of, not sterilized. what kind of society with the resources that we have, keeps a constant population of mentally ill indigents wandering the streets as vagrants?

- AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22She will. I've been involved with the system, fighting for the rights of good parents, and have learned that often the good parents lose the kids permanently and the bad ones get them back. She'll eventually get the baby back from a good, adoptive family, and then she'll go on welfare.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If, she's still alive by then. She sounds like a crack whore, and will probably be dead within the next 4-6 years.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2from the article:
Police had to restrain Matthews, who exhibited psychotic behavior and appeared to be suffering from mental illness, said Casciato.
despite what you may think, not all vagrants are simply lazy immoral drug addicts. but i guess stereotyping/villanizing the homeless and attributing their unfortunate circumstances to personal vices or poor constitution is a lot easier than recognizing that we're one of the only 1st world nations with such a high permanent poor population, even in times of economic prosperity. it effectively ignores societal problems such as a lack of mental health facilities for those incapable of taking care of themselves due to mentally illness, as well as societal conditions that make it difficult for those who find themselves hitting rock bottom to get back on their feet.

I used to live right by San Fran and can honestly say that it is ridden with homeless.
btw: Never go into public bathrooms over there (like at McDonalds, Borders, Coffeshops, etc) before 10am because they always are being occupied by homeless. human placenta can be cooked into a delicious and very nutritious stew, which will surely impress your dinner guests with your amazing culinary skills.
Placenta Stew:
Meat of 3/4 placenta in bite size chunks, 1 potato (cubed), 1/4 cup fresh parsley, 2 carrots, 3 ribs celery, 1 zucchini, 1 large tomato, 1 small onion. Dredge meat in 1 tbl. flour mixed with 1 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. paprika, pinch of cloves, pinch of pepper, 6-8 crushed coriander seeds. Saute meat in 2 tbl. oil, then add vegetables (cut up) and 4-5 cups of water. Bring to full boil, then simmer for 1 hour.

- MisterFlaut, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2So? Animals have babies and leave them all the time.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Which animals do this? I can't think of one species.

Just think. ~9 months ago some lucky guy was getting busy with this lovely flower. - FlyingFredCurry, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3"Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate." - stevealford, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10If a baby eats its own afterbirth in a pool of blood on a sidewalk and no one is around to see it, do its cries afterward make a sound?
Also, I agree with MisterFlaut: modern medicine has convinced us that a doctor and full medical staff need to devote immediate attention to newborns or they'll DIE. This just goes to show that nature knows what it's doing. A baby is born, the mother walks off, the baby doesn't die on the spot... whattaya know. Maybe people will stop paying thousands of dollars to deliver at a hospital and start doing home births again. Then again... probably not. After all, who will charge you $500 for another unnecessary proceedure after that birth for all male babies if you deliver at home?- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://athome.harvard.edu/programs/rrh/rrh_slides/rrh_2.html
"Fineberg compares the dangers of childbirth in the Western world and developing countries. In American and Europe, one in 4,000 women die during childbirth. In Africa, the number increases shockingly to one in fourteen. "The differences in the reality of the current dangers to life and health in the course of reproduction are a stark reminder of the disparities in health and life opportunity between the advanced and the developing worlds," Feinberg states. The conference addresses issues about this discrepancy and explores the ways in which science can enable us to solve this problem."
Giving birth is dangerous. Doing so without a doctor, given the choice, is a very unwise. - Tarnum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7stevealford: Yes, a woman can give birth at home, with the help of home-trained midwife. 80% of the pregnancies are classified as low risk.
However, the other 20% will have complications that require trained obstetrician staff and equipment to save the baby or the mother. I'm talking about heavy bleeding, premature births, non-progression. In the past, most of them were fatal.

- ciaotanini, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11She could have at least had a clever sign like most of the bums in the city. That guy with the "My wife is being held hostage, and I'm .49 cents short" sign always cracks me up.
- ECas123, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1And just where was Mr. Kevin Rose during this ordeal?

- hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Strange a very similar incident occured in another Bay Area city a few months ago. I think the mother was arrested for this.
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It must've been easy to track her down, they just traced the umbilical cord from the baby to the mother.
- penguinshome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I'm going to get dugg down, but I'll say it anyway
THIS IS SPARTA! IT'S WHAT WE DO!!! - YouGiveMeRash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is so messed up, but at least the baby was found alive.

- krakdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thank you Regan...if only there was some place...an "asylum" perhaps...where the crazies could go to get off the streets...

Then hung up and went back to watching "Desperate Housewives" behind the lobby desk. - TheLoneWolf071, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn. That's ***** up. You know, people go out of their way to make safe haven laws. She could have dropped that baby off at any fire station or designated place, no question asked. She should be arrested on the charges.
- FlyingFredCurry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2She was "...arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and neglect, police said."
- aukxsona, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1what if she couldn't read? What if she was lost and confused? What if she thought a demon spawned from her ass as it wailed and ran (wobbled) away as fast as possible?
WHAT IF she thought the demon screaming imp would eat her?
If she's crazy THAT is plausible...at least she didn't try to kill it. - tampersanda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because the best way to deal with the mentally ill is DEFINITELY to throw them in prison.
