Power Napping: How To Fall Asleep Anywhere
lifehack.org — The trick is the use sleep MP3s. They are essentially MP3s that play white noise for the duration of the nap, and then slowly wake you up by playing a variety of sounds. What's great is that you can play them on your computer speakers, or make them portable by putting them on your iPod or cell phone.

How do I know that it will not, "slowly wake (me) up by playing a variety of sounds," but instead wake me with the use of a man's voice yelling obscenities at me, causing me to have a heart attack and die? - RobertS44, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1This snapshot/cached page runs faster:

static puts me to sleep...
wowo.... - HBNDonut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does this stuff keep you asleep? Because I tend to try and sleep on the bus on my way to and from work because I never get enough sleep at night, but it usually involves me just waking every few minutes by a slight bump or shake... If this stuff helps, it would be a god send.
- bashar129, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm reluctant to try this because I am a very very deep sleeper...even if it's for a nap in the middle of the day. I have synced up my TV, my phone, and my loud alarm clock (which is about 6 inches away from my head when I sleep) before and I still won't be able to get up. The only way I can take a nap before work and still wake up without any assistance is if I rest my head on top of my cell phone...actually on it...right to my ear, and it isn't the sound that wakes me up either it's the vibration. I'll try this out on a Sunday afternoon when I have nothing to do but I won't rely on it to wake me up for work on the first try.
- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"What's great is that you can play them on your computer speakers, or make them portable by putting them on your iPod or cell phone."

- Magillicutti, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Well, that doesn't really help me with how to fall asleep. I wouldn't my taking naps for energy. But if I'm awake, I'm awake, and I can't really sleep unless I'm dead tired. I'd use the time to take a nap, but not to lay around trying to, and I don't think white noise will make any difference there.
edit: I do understand how this could be useful to those of you who can.- odst117, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2it's a learned thing. I wasn't able to do it until i reached high school, and then boring class after boring class finally put me to sleep. After the first time, falling asleep is a breeze. Just take a math class that you don't give a ***** about and i bet you'll fall asleep.

- SomaSynth, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1I would say pink or even brownian noise are better. White noise has an uncomfortable amount of high frequency content IMO. Good for obscuring background noise during work, or even masking tinnitus. I suppose it would depend on the environment and what type of frequency ranges you're exposed to, brownian might be a bit too dark for some places with screaming girls.

- Mushroonaut, on 07/11/2008, -0/+3Pzizz is also a good alternative for napping.
- bobakanush, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1but you must pay...
- gadgetlust, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Pzizz is actually quite sophisticated in that it doesn't just mix white noise with soothing sounds -- it also uses a phenomenon known as "binaural beats" to promote brain waves at frequencies associated with various states of consciousness. It works by playing tones that differ by only a few Hz through the left and right audio channel. When the brain combines the two channels, you perceive the frequency difference as a flutter that can be quite hypnotic.

- CornStarch, on 10/11/2007, -12/+1I don't wear earbuds because #1. don't like technology that I must shove in a bodily orphus and #2. For the price of a pair of midrange earbuds I can buy some absolutely terrific sounding real headphones. This however presents a problem when sleeping as you can't really lay your head any which way with headphones on.

- tanto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Studies show that women are very sensitive to nighttime sounds. If you have a snoring boyfriend, or you live near a highway or an airport, set up a bedroom sound barrier with earplugs or a white noise machine (even a simple table fan may work).

- NachoBusiness, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Maybe this works for some people but personally, if there's any kind of sound other than just the unavoidable ambient sounds in my house, I am not going to fall asleep. There's no magic way to put absolutely anyone to sleep... short of very powerful drugs obviously.
- T-Bird, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I gave it a try...didn't think it would work...and from a perfectly awake state I fell asleep for a bit. Woke up rather refreshed.

- sLydE, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Transparent Corp. has an awesome program called Neuro Programmer 2:
http://www.transparentcorp.com/products/np/
This has a ton of presets for different things, dealing not only with sleep. There's also IQ increase, ADD control, relaxation, caffeine replacement, blood pressure/hypertension reduction, etc. Also, they have suggestions (like subliminal messages, but audible) for healing, quiting smoking, creativity, motivation, etc.
I've used it for a few months now on a semi-regular basis. The relaxation sessions are especially useful.- devilspy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1@slyde (#7294327)
NOT FREE. Home Edition $44.99 Pro Edition Price: $59.99 - Derrekito, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I actually purchased this my freshman year of college, I used it primarily for the study helper sessions. All I can say is it helps a lot with that, OBEs, trying to sleep, a quick wake up,etc. It was a lot of money but in retrospect I think it was an investment worth having, for me anyways.
- sLydE, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1There is a free version, and the only difference is that you can't export the sound files. I did end up buying the full version, because it had become such an integral part of my life.

- p0tent1al, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Ok. Noone has really talked about safety issues here.
1. Is listening to this safe? I don't know much about frequencies, but I know some frequencies can be dangerous to your ear.
2. Wouldn't you become dependent on things like this?
3. I listened via headphones, and it wasn't that comfortable to my ears to be honest. Maybe I should of had my comp at a lower volume, but still.
Just worried about safety issues. Obviously you want to get a full nights rest if you can, but this seems like a good option if you really need sleep (esp. in a noisy place) but I'm just worried about safety.- andyGILL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0To be honest, you don't know jack ***** so you shouldn't be posting.
