Pastor had sex with daughters to teach them to be good wives
smh.com.au — A fundamentalist church pastor had sex with two of his teenage daughters to educate them on how to be good wives, a South Australian court has heard. The man told the court the sex was not about fulfilling his desires but about teaching his daughters how to behave for their husbands when they eventually married, as dictated in scripture.

Obviously his wife condoned this.- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27i wonder if the entire church knew about it too. if they actually followed the preachings of a guy who rapes his children, perhaps the entire town needs therapy, or at least there needs to be some kind of further investigation of the church community to make sure that there's no other ***** up ***** going on. after all, morality has proven to be culturally subjective and i'd highly question the moral culture of their church community since a child rapist was their moral/religious leader.
- brokencrystal, on 10/10/2007, -16/+3The entire church? What is that supposed to mean? If one person does something like this, should everyone who is a Christian automatically know and support such an act? If so, how?

- ambiescent, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Afaik, there was no indication that God did or did not create any more humans after Adam & Eve. It could've been that they were having children with people that were created after the first two. (but then again I'm no theologist either!)

- euphemizeme, on 10/10/2007, -2/+43He got dugg down because people couldn't tell if, by "nice", he literally meant that it was worth it.
- MalenfantX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I expect it was worth it to the pedophile. It's a very light sentence for something most people disapprove so strongly of.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5well, if he's not likely to repeat the crime, then he really doesn't need to serve any time at all, just needs therapy. it might not seem fair, but our justice system is there to protect people, not to hand out punishment or carry out retribution/vengeance. i know that many people have a vindictive attitude towards criminals, and many people see the justice system as there to punish wrong-doers and "bad" people, but besides being self-righteous and morally questionable, this also undermines the rehabilitative role of our corrections system, and it wastes tax dollars to keep people locked up unnecessarily.
- H0tKarl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Fine, shoot the ***** then.
- Ranneko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Capitol Punishment does not exist in Australia. It was abolished a fair while ago.
- Aily, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10So, if I go on a killing spree, killing of hundreds of people, then showing up in the court, acting all remorseful, I don't need to go to jail since I'm obviously not likely to repeat the crime. I just need some therapy.Yeah...
- kronix2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Some people don't abstain from crime because they're morally virtuous; they do so because they realise the penalty if caught isn't worth the risk. If we're to say every criminal needs only to be rehabilitated, then there's little incentive for these people to obey the law. Sorry, but society demands punishments be handed down not only to act as a deterrent, but to protect the public.
I'm not really a fan of life sentences, but it's been conclusively shown that paedophiles are repeat offenders. They cannot suppress their attraction to children any more than a heterosexual man can suppress his attraction to women. Paedophiles who molest or have sex with children present a continuous risk to the public. They're essentially rapists who are attracted not to women, but children. Yes, they need help, and I sympathise with those who struggle against what they feel, but the risk of them reoffending is simply too great.
This pastor is clearly a threat to children. He is a paedophile who had sex with two of his own under-age daughters. Four years is a joke. Life would be appropriate. - fxspec06, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2@smackhero

Atheists do not.

But, Atheism doesn't promote not killing anyone, raping, etc. Infact it doesn't promote anything but believing there is no god or creator, so any religious person doing bad ***** (see rapeing children for ten years) they are being hypocrites also, an atheist isnt, just a bad person

- onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -7/+7Wow way to come back at a troll. Of course religion does good things. That doesn't make it all right when bad people use it to do bad things.
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25Religion is what religion is. A set of teachings, doctrines and rules, always subject to interpretation. It's what the people do that matters, not the religion. This man is twisted and deserves to be punished. If his interpretation of the rules was actually what he claims it to be, then he's sadly mistaken. Likely, it's a cover for his own perverse desires. The rest of the people "supporting" him probably knew about it and didn't have the courage to do otherwise, so they diluted themselves into believing his nonsense. Words in a book never MADE anyone do anything. Don't forget who bears the responsibility here.
- fatesdefiance, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Best comment on religion I've ever seen on Digg. I'm surprised it hasn't been buried yet since you didn't simply bash religion unreservedly as most here seem to.
- badjoke, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Even as an atheist/agnostic I find your statement too generalizing. Sure, it's fun to bash on fundies and the creationist museum, but religion does spawn a lot of good works. Help in Africa, for example.
I'm not saying that religion is needed for morals but "and who says religion is a good thing?" is kinda wrong.- southwo9, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3/sarcasm?
Surely they're not helping the aids epidemic in africa with their lies about condoms...... - ElwoodHerring, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You can do "good works" and even "help in Africa" without being religious. I myself sponsored a child in Africa for 10 years - and I'm an atheist. Religion on its own has no merit whatsoever, in fact its effect is more often negative than positive. Learn to do good for non-religious reasons which as far as I'm concerned is a much better outlook.
- rkritzer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but through what organization do you sponsor a child in Africa? My guess is it's a Christian organization. The way I see it, a group of organized people with a similar set of beliefs is the only way to get a monumental effort like that off the ground.
- gmprunner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Holy cow, a smart Atheist! Sound the alarms!
- southwo9, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3/sarcasm?
- KeepSwinging, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1before anyone continues to digg up syroncoda, they're supportive of him during the trial/jail time, not his actions against his daughters. Still not that great of a choice but a lot better what his comment implies.
- tony134340, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Religion is bad because it blindly flows regardless of time/situation. I will be the first to say the bible does contain a long, healthy life, for the most part. But in this day and age, it's not what the world needs. People need to die because overpopulation is a big problem. If the populace isn't lessened or act wiser about it's environment, then our future generations may not exist at all. Time to start pulling teeth. It's for the better.
- mahdaeng, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This isn't really about religion, though, it's about a lunatic and his interpretation of religion.
- Akaji, on 10/10/2007, -41/+40Yeah, I know, because atheists would never do the same thing...
- richgustavson, on 10/10/2007, -7/+77Lock that ***** up.
- Bara, on 10/10/2007, -39/+17What's with all the anti-religious comments? Just because he's a pastor? What he did was wrong and ***** up whether he was a pastor or not, so what does this have to do with religion?
- cquinnd, on 10/10/2007, -7/+351. It's the inherint hypocrisy of the situation. He claims to be teaching his daughters to be good wives, by a practice that would not be considered acting as a good husband.
2. It's considered abuse of a position of trust and responsibility.
3. It's an abuse of his role as a trusted religious leader. - AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -5/+56"what does this have to do with religion?"
How about this quote from the article: "The man told the court the sex was not about fulfilling his desires but about teaching his daughters how to behave for their husbands when they eventually married, as dictated in scripture."
The guy felt that his religion justified his actions. Possibly even *required* his actions. *That's* what it has to do with religion.- mjxl47, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1What I want to know is what religion this guy is. What kind of deranged freak is this guy and how did he become a "pastor"?
- volnick, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Correction: the guy *claimed* he felt that his religion justified his actions. I doubt he really thought that. He was just a corrupt pastor making excuses to get some ass. It's like the pastor's version of "I'll only put it in for a second".
Side note: this guy's got issues, and I think he should be locked up. He is a failure at representing respectable religion.- smedrick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Read the bible...you'll find his justification in there.
- cquinnd, on 10/10/2007, -7/+351. It's the inherint hypocrisy of the situation. He claims to be teaching his daughters to be good wives, by a practice that would not be considered acting as a good husband.
- gregsmamma, on 10/10/2007, -15/+77this wouldn't have even made it on here if "Pastor" wasn't in the title.

- neffy, on 10/10/2007, -9/+3Who?
- onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19It's the fact that he used religion to do it that is relevant to him being a Pastor, that's why it's included. Are you saying a father raping his 13 and 15 year old daughters consistently for 10 years is not one of the nastiest things you have ever heard of? That it doesn't deserve to be news? He should get WAY more than 4 years. And his wife/church should NOT be supportive of him.
- Whackly, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9So are you saying this is discrimination against pastors? I don't think it is. I think it's discrimination against hypocrites, especially those who would hide behind the bible while they do hideous and evil things (a common practice among politicians here in the U.S.).
- fredwood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pastors, teachers, parents, politicians, ets. are in a position of power. Pedophiles and child molesters use that position to take advantage of people. For that reason it should be noted that he is a pastor. Quit defending pedophiles and start thinking about the victims who have a lifetime of therapy. What if it was YOUR dad and PASTOR who raped you. Think about how you looked to them for guidance. Now think about how ***** your life would be if they raped you.
- cquinnd, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31You mean like the psychiatrist who took advantage of a woman with multiple personalities?
- mishabear, on 10/10/2007, -5/+107For those who need an explanation: In the US, when one is "religious" it is implied that they believe themselves to be moral. They are seen as self-righteous because they believe their faith makes them moral. A pastor is supposed to be a beacon of morality thus the hypocracy of his actions is even more pronounced. To have the support of his church and wife makes them hypocritical and "sick" as well.
- DRINKxREDxBULL, on 10/10/2007, -7/+9Really? I don't ever recall this guy coming to my house and telling me that he is better than me because he has faith.

Yes, because his name and identify is withheld and currently secret.

- eatbeefjerky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This particular guy did not come to my house and tell me he was better than me because of his religion, but when you consider that most if not all religious people (NOT just Christians) feel that to be moral you must follow the teachings of a deity or religious icon... it basically makes its own point.
- ClOlD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Aren't most religious folks (well, I mean christians, coming from the US) hypocrites anyway? Thou shall not kill? Sure! Vote for those supporting the death penalty? Why not?! It's not ME doing the killing.
- ElwoodHerring, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0What's wrong with being moral merely because you believe it's the right way to behave - and leave religion out of the equation altogether? I don't have to rely on a book to tell me how to live my life - I instinctively know. Doesn't that make me even more "moral" than those who do good only because a 2000 year old book tells them to, or because they think they will go to hell if they don't? Think about it.
- MalenfantX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yes. You behave well because you want to. Many religious people do so out of fear. It is nice that religion keeps those people in check.
- mahdaeng, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wrong. Religiosity and morality are two completely different concepts - although they are normally, and under ideal circumstances, found together. Extreme religiosity is the same thing that causes the immoral killings performed by fanatic Muslims.

- BigBrother87, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Umm, the description starts with "A fundamentalist church pastor..."
- onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Pretty sure the word Pastor is used exclusively in the Christian Church. Wikipedia backs me up on this: A pastor is an elder of a Christian church.
If it was a different religion, they would have used another term. The fundamentalist part does come from the article though.- mjxl47, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Meriam Webster defines pastor as a: spiritual overseer; especially : a clergyman serving a local church or parish
It says nothing about exclusive rights to a certain religion. I'm going to have to go with webster on this one. But this is all a side-note. What he did was deplorable and that's the bottom line. I don't know what religion he ascribes to, but it's pretty ridiculous and cowardly to claim that "the scriptures told him to" to cover his tracks.
- mjxl47, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Meriam Webster defines pastor as a: spiritual overseer; especially : a clergyman serving a local church or parish
- brokencrystal, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2If an atheist raped someone for the same reason (he wanted to have sex with his children) he would not get the same publicity. Would it be just as wrong? I think so. This guy needs locked up for life and his genitals removed, yes... But don't blame it on religion. His religion doesn't teach this... This was his sick and twisted idea to have some sex with the kiddies.
- Randinn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What are you babbling about, ever read the Bible??? I can think of one example of incest off the of my head...
- rkritzer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yeah, Genesis 19:30-36, the story of Lot and his daughters getting him drunk and seducing him so they could preserve their family line. Each daughter had a son: Moab and Ben-Ammi. Moab became the founder of the Moabites, and Ben-Ammi became the founder of the Ammonites. Both nations ended up either being idol-worshippers or polytheists. Thus, the Bible teaches specifically against incest.

- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20depends, did the teacher do it in the name of education? do they claim that anyone who doesn't support their version of education is immoral and will go to hell?
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7it doesnt depend on anything!

- MalenfantX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It's important to understand that religion is a scam. The supernatural is entirely the product of the human imagination, and can be used to justify pretty much anything to ignorant people.
Tough break for this pastor that people aren't as ignorant as they used to be and religious misleaders can now be held accountable for their crimes.
If we're lucky one day all the conmen that take money to preach to fools about a reward after you die will be prosecuted for fraud.
- MalenfantX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It's important to understand that religion is a scam. The supernatural is entirely the product of the human imagination, and can be used to justify pretty much anything to ignorant people.
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7it doesnt depend on anything!
- Zarokima, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7No, this guy actually stated that he did it for religious and educational reasons. It's not some "ZOMG PASTOR MEENS HE DO IT FOR TEH RELIGIONS!!!" thing like your comment implies.
- negativenancy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7This is just another case of people abusing a cause in order to justify their actions through it. For example, I can shoot a random person on the street and say it was in the name of religion, does that immediately invalidate religion as a whole? Should we disregard it and scorn it because of this accusation? For all we know the pastor knew this was wrong the entire time and made up this ***** excuse to lay blame to a greater power. It's not necessarily the religion's fault moreso as it is the people who abuse it to obtain their own ends. Really, anything can be used as an excuse, but that doesn't mean we grant the excuse any weight. The pastor could've thought of this ***** excuse on the way to court.
Misinterpretation is the biggest problem here.

How do these people become pastors, and better yet, who hires a registered sex offender to be their pastor? I can understand loving someone through their problems, but that doesn't mean you should let them be your church leader.
- rdnkjdi, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Well, he wasn't a pastor...just one of the preachers, like an associate pastor. Oh yeah, & the pastor's son was a gay porn star who'd been in trouble for indecent exposure...and he randomly showed up @ a SS function one day. I know I'm forgetting other stuff, but I can't remember what.
- H0tKarl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dude, you seriously suck at picking churches.

If you want more proof, I'll post the newspaper articles about the dude who raped his daughter. Oh, and yeah, I DO suck at picking churches...

Seriously, he needs a 400lb cell mate with a 15" *****...- brokencrystal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think those were his personal beliefs, not his religious beliefs.

- manti5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It doesn't really mention if the daughters were opposed to this, I think they would eventually catch on. Unless they were so sheltered that they thought "gee my dad's dick is inside me, hooray!"
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I also wondered how they felt about it. I can't imagine they were too enthusiastic, but then again stranger things have happened.
- bmnrocks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I mean it went on for ~10yrs, so if they objected, I bet it would have come out a lot sooner.

- OokieWonderslug, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I have heard of this happening in West Virginia before. People get arrested for it all the time. When I was 17 I had a girlfriend who admitted to me that her dad had done that to her when she was 13. She wasn't the only one to tell me that. I'm glad I don't live there anymore.

- mikesum32, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Tying this to West Virginia is a hackneyed and ignorant grasp at low hanging fruit. You can do better. I'm sure it happens here, but only as much as it happens anywhere else in the U.S.A.

- Starfoxy7, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5I can't believe any of you are sick enough to look at this guy with anything resembling envy. 'Getting' to act out a horrific perversion that will traumatize your daughters isn't something any sane person would want to do.
That anyone would openly (even anonymously on the internet) admit to thinking this guy got a great deal makes me nauseous.- CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm

- rjejr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Did it really never occur to the guy that there may not be a lot of guys out there who want to marry women who have been having sex with their daddy for 10 years? I think that pretty much kills the whole "it was for their own good" argument right there.
- onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3You shouldn't really even try to formulate an argument against his explanation because it lends it credability that it does not deserve.
