Google gas pumps: the savior of lost men
engadget.com — Soon, you will never have to admit that you're lost and suffer the humiliation of asking for directions. Google is expected to announce a partnership today with Gilbarco Veeder-Root, to include Google's mapping service on 3,500 Internet enabled gasoline pumps across the US.

- Otto, on 11/08/2007, -2/+5Just stick Google maps on your cell phone. Comes in incredibly handy. I use it all the time when I travel. Note that you will want an unlimited data plan for your phone though. With AT&T, said unlimited data is $20 a month.

You can zoom in on your neighbor's back yard all you want to, but you'll just see that light orange color used for landmass.

Some things sound pretty damn nifty in theory, but when put into practice in real world conditions: not so.

How about surf computers inside the gas station? - zakatov, on 11/09/2007, -2/+0yea, even my 2 year old free cell phone have Google Maps on it, but as long as this thing doesn't make the gas more expensive or harder to get (hopefully if the GMaps thing crashes, the pump will work)
- chriskeyes, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2I much prefer Live Maps over Google Maps. I'm betting most Digg users haven't tried Live Maps.
Not to sound like any fanboy, but I think people should know that Live Maps does do better in areas than GMaps does. Like:
1. 3D cities with realistic colors and look
2. Birds-eye-imagery - much better than aerial maps, in that you can see much better detail and angle-wise
3. Make a map collection and make a video from it - you can make a video from your map collection. Pretty nifty, and you can upload it to many video-sharing sites
4. Traffic feature - Had this BEFORE GMaps had it. I find the way Live does it, is much better.
5. Better aerial imagery in urban cities
6. Drag-n-pull rerouting - not as advanced as Google does it, but it's there.
7. Better UI - I find the Live Maps UI is just as simple and even easy to use as Google's.
That's off the top of my head. There's many more reasons.
I urge that users really look at alternatives. Don't diss Live Maps because it's from MS, or anything. That's sillly. Just give it a try.
