English World Cup fans drink Germany dry
mirror.co.uk — In Nuremberg, organisers revealed 70,000 England fans who flooded the city drank 1.2 million pints of beer - an average of 17 pints each. Astonished bar keeper Herrmann Murr said: "Never have I seen so many drink so much in such little time."

- Zzzzz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Is this is true, it is so sweet! Dugg for the English drinkers!
- thedove, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10i believe it! and coming from the Germans, that's saying a lot! they're not one to pass on a drink!
- benspicer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Never have I felt so proud to be British (and we haven't even won the World Cup yet!)
- panheaduk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Never have so many drank the pints of so few.
- kherrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't you mean, "Never have so few drank the pints of so many" ???
- Clearz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats only because Ireland aren't in the world cup.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16That's 1862.4 feet cubed of beer.
God damn, that's a lot of beer.- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13can you express that in football fields?
- mc1123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7filled the one inch high, about 2/5ths of an american football field, while around 6/5ths of a rest-of-the-world football field.
- Strongoloid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Haha, the AVERAGE is 17 pints each. A little over two gallons of beer per drinking person.
- milkfat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11862.4 feet cubed???
I'm showing that 1 200 000 imperial pints ~ 24 000 cubic feet ~ 680 cubic meters... which is a whole lot more beer than you calculated.
That would be about 3.6 inches (9 cm) of beer covering an entire World Cup field. Have fun playing in that. - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31. Soccer Hooligans, I don't need to explain that.
2. Let's hope they weren't drinking Budweiser.
- Ashepp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great stuff
- Moshcrates, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Dugg for world cup. They sure do know how to drink
- Twinked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dugg, because I can imagine it happening.
- buk110, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Thanks for the homage, I'm truly honored that someone would go so far out of there way to point out my inabilities to type on a keyboard. I was under the assumption that modding my comment should have been enough; alas, I was way off on that one.
- gregharmon, on 10/12/2007, -19/+917 pints each? We have a word for that around here.
Lightweights.- gregharmon, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4Before someone takes me seriously and asks me if I can drink more; I was being sarcastic.
- buk110, on 10/12/2007, -12/+317 pints each, during the college days that's nothing for most guys. I remember right before the frats would have pledge week , they'd be bringing in Beer by the Truckload on Pallets. Man, some of the best times in college are nothing more than a blur .....
- yottabite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Something else to be proud of I'm sure. The World Cup just Needs More Drunken hooligans.
Note my homage to buk110 with caps all over.
- erichoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's six Super Big Gulps worth of brew.....
- anesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Germans? Hailing the english as great beer drinkers?!
Being English myself as I read that article I couldn't help but feel the warmth of british pride wash over me.
Everyone to the pub!- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Jolly good idea!
- stinkipete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Tally ho!
Being English I'm allowed to say that:) - Salvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They were saying that the English were Great "Beer Drinkers" as opposed to "Great Beer" Drinkers.
After all, if Bud was the only beer available, There's no way they could have been drinking great beer. - RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Bud was the only beer available" ah.... that explains the 17 pints, in order to get a fix you would get from any other type of beer you'd need to drink a whole lot more, roughly in the 6 to 1 range (6 buds is one pint of bitter)
- Mace37, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's amazing. Germany may have classy beers but it doesn't matter when it's chugged that fast. That's probably why they drink it luke-warm too, easier to go down faster.
- brfuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8A total myth. I've never ever had, ,or seen anyone in the UK drink a warm beer. A quality tasty ale won't be ice chilled. But everything else is cool as.
- Salvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4FIFA dictated that they could only serve Bud at the World Cup. Now wonder they drank so much, they thought is was Water!
- kicken18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We always have cold beers in the pub
- brfuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8A total myth. I've never ever had, ,or seen anyone in the UK drink a warm beer. A quality tasty ale won't be ice chilled. But everything else is cool as.
- everfresh59, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12You should be so lucky that Canadians aren't soccer nuts. Or we'd drink not only Germany dry, but also all of its neighboring countries.....
- RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and still be social about it too ;)
- bobbywan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7BRILLIANT!
- mc1123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I hope no one was driving, else the autobahn would be in ruin right now.
- maka25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg, but how did they sort it out? It's not like they were saying Africans out-drank Asians. That would be easy to determine, but how did they determine English v.s. German?
- nonhuman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, the English speak English and the Germans speak German...
- erichoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The English were the ones trying to pay in Pounds rather than Euros.
- coopa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd guess that pretty much ever English guy there is wearing an England shirt. It's like that here in the UK anyway, so i'd say it's just as true at the venue country.
- Braamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Having been in the middle of Stuttgart during the last game vs Ecuador, I can tell you that the English throw as much beer as they drink. Immediately after a the only goal was scored, the 15,000 englanders in Koenigsplatz simultaneously threw their beers into the air. Rather impressive when viewed from the side, especially to we Americans who cringe at the thought of such alcohol abuse.
- joelito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Alchool waste is a deadly sin...
At least where I live...
- joelito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Alchool waste is a deadly sin...
- goahard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Went drinking in Singapore with an Aussie and a Brit. -This poor ol' Canadian "country boy" was in a sorry sorry state after 7 or so (lost count) 750mL Tiger Beers. -They were next to sober, and the rounds were still coming when I'd lost track of time, my name, capacity to not drool on self, etc...
- poptorrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hardly surprising really - we English know how to drink ;-)
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Need SOMETHING to make those British women seem appealing... (and vice-versa)
- somnus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That doesn't seem like a lot for the duration of the World Cup so far. Do they mean 17 pints in a day? That would be a lot, and doable (though probably only with American beer, seeing as it is so hopelessly weak). There must be some lightweights bringing that average down.
- Punk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well Ive been at my local pub alot more now that the world cup is on.
I usually only drink on the weekends, now its every night. World Cup is turning me into an alchy :(
Good thing this only happends once every four years.- kicken18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0same in my house mate we got so many bottles and crate boxes around
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3if germany is dry then world has probably stopped moving
- jsd8cc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll drink to that!
- YellowBook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I can't imagine it could have been 17 pints of proper German beer. If must have been Bud - just like drinking ***** water.
- Junkey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I can see it now, the baby boom of 2006! ps german girls are ez.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hahaha! Who woulda guessed Germany would have trouble with beer supply?
Let's go England! =D- Salvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's because FIFA is only letting them sell beer from the FIFA Sponsors.
- Arizona_Glover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Come on En-ger-land !
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Hail the German Girls and their Beer!....
- p8r1ck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If the German's were impressed by the English drinkers, be thankful the Irish didn't qualify this time.
Sláinte! - ratzfatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As being a German and quite familiar with beer and its consumption I like to add some information the article of famous UK Mirror. The story has been published by the German "Bild Zeitung" which is well known for its lines ("We are pope!" after Cardinal Ratzinger has been elected in the Vatican).
What the Mirror is hiding is the fact that the beer consumption was for about 14 minutes only and mostly because the glasses where supposed to be kept by most of the "consumers" as an souvenir.
It has been looking there like this:

Just to give you a more precise picture. I do like the people in the UK and fully respect there need to take advantage of German pubs open 24/7.- kicken18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We have 24 hour lisence now in England, finally, but yeah I wish I was out their taking full credit of pure drinking and football
- Saxonx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Obviously they've never watched Diggnation live....
- bullines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reading this makes my liver hurt, in a good way :)
- stuartea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think Boris covers it quite well (and I'd never vote for him)
"But as long as the British think - as I am afraid they do - that a snorting hangover is somehow a matter for boasting, then they will continue to get hammered."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2005/08/11/do1101.xml - kicken18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Feel proud to be English...We always go to Tesco and get 2 crates of 24 for £16 for each match, sorted. Hope their drinking quality European beer and not American [i.e bud] *****
- theoallardyce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wooo we're the best at something!!!
- threadbare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In a related story, Nuremburg inundated by yellow liquid.. Locals claim highest flood level in 52 years.
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They're going to be drinking a lot more when England finally falls to Portugal on saturday ;)
- Acidosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Boo!
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know it will happen!
- hsfrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 It doesn't say much for the Brits that the only things they have to be proud of are their drunkeness, rowdiness, boorishness, and hooliganism.
- budrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Trust me, we're not -all- proud.
