One girl got in a not heated but friendly debate with me, and the next day brought a paper supporting Christianity. I sat down with the paper and wrote down counter-arguments for all the points it made, then handed it back to her. She gave up.
Then another time, another girl just gave me this "God Science" book out of nowhere. Weirded me out, since I'd never talked to this girl in my life.
Finally, there was one heated debate during play practice. The point of the freedom of religion was so that people would not be prosecuted by the state for anything religious. It is not now, nor has it ever been the intention of the "freedom of religion" clause to stop people from coming into contact with religion or being told by other individuals that they should believe in God. Its only purpose was to stop the State, not individuals.

But even if this stat does refer to the U.S., so many more Americans claim to be Christian than actually are, so I'm not sure what a statistic like that even tells us.

You self-identify as an atheist while simultaneously espousing inherent morals, so I will assume you're a humanist. But, the "fear" being referred to is not "being afraid", it means respecting Him and wanting to please Him because of everything He has done. I would support her completely in not getting involved with someone who was not a Christian. Better to avoid the situation completely.

I'm taking your comment with a grain of salt anyway, though. For one thing, and I'm sure you already understand this, providing counter arguments to a high school Christian girl and leaving her unable to make any comebacks is not proof that we are wrong. Most people that claim to be Christians these days would be stumped if you asked them any real theological questions that didn't pertain to the basic catechism. I see this quite often living in the Southeast, where most children are raised going to church, but few of them put much though into it beyond the fact that they're told they have to believe in Jesus.

Another guy who I'd never met or seen before was also waiting and he just walked up to me and handed me one of those orange pocket bibles. He didn't hand it to anyone else in the lobby though. I am an atheist but there was no way he could have known that. And when he handed it to me, he said "Make sure you read this" and then he left. It was really weird

Unfortunately, as with everything, best case scenario not always the case. Many atheists are tolerant, many others are not. There are plenty of Christians just like me. People who take pride in their faith and use it to become a better person. One who does not steal or kill or commit adultery. That's all people like me care about.

That was in our first state constitution as well. Half of the student organizations on campus are religious ones. Too bad my prepaid tuition won't cover out of state universities or I'd leave.
- angrytito, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I was gonna write some sort of reply about people taking easy shots at Alabama, because I've lived here all my life and it gets under my skin. But then, I thought about it and realized we do it to ourselves anyway. Ten Commandments Judge, Roy Moore, is the most recent national embarrassment.
But also, we have the longest constitution in the world which was written in 1901 and is a complete travesty. According to the state constitution you cannot carry ice cream in your back pocket on a Sunday, nor is it legal to wear a fake mustache in church if it causes laughter. There were movements to rewrite it a few years ago, but Roy Moore's wife lead a campaign to defeat the movement by saying that a rewrite was an attempt to "remove God from the constitution". It worked.
Also, an attempt to create a state lottery for education was defeated by a push by the Southern Baptist Convention. Part of the campaign was to find other, moral ways to fund education, but after the defeat they admitted they had no "Plan B". Then again, the Democrat governor who pushed the lottery initiative is now in prison on corruption charges. So maybe the defeat was for the best.
It's very frustrating to live here. We spend more money, way more, on road projects than we do on education. The constitution is based on "home rule" which means if County X wants to raise certain taxes, it has to pass a state-wide referendum. There is a religious control to the state, which I personally believe works to keep the populous ignorant.
I guess this little rambling snapshot of Alabama could best be summed up by this statement. In the mid-90's Republican governor Fob James, in response to a ruling by the federal government, actually said "The Bill of Rights does not apply to states." The only reason I stay, besides friends and family, is to hope that one day I could help affect change here. But maybe I'm just a foolish, agnostic democrat.
