- meshman, on 10/12/2007, -38/+362My, how depressing. Being born, getting married, watching half your life die and then sitting around doing nothing waiting for the other half to die until there's nothing left. Will you be the one to shuffle around that empty old house alone? Or will it be you that watches your loved one think ahead to the same conclusion? Or will it just be you, lonely, unfulfilled and begging for the sweet release of death, all the time wondering what the point of it all was.
Thanks. I love inspirational photos.- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -27/+566the parent coment is rated EE for extremely emo

If I could abolish one slang word from the collective lexicon of the human race it would definitely be "emo". It's just become a replacement for the equally lazy slang term "gay". Where once you may have said "Oh man that is so gay!" you would probably now say "Oh man that is so emo!". It doesn't even MEAN anything! It's not a real word, it's just a made up name for an obscure genre of punk music that died out in the early 90's. Sure, there are lots of derivatives of it on the radio today, but if you think you've ever heard emo music on mainstream radio then you're wrong. Good Charlotte and My Chemical Romance and Simple Plan are not emo bands, they're just ***** pop music. If you're the type of person who says "Dude you're like so emo!" then you've probably never heard emo music. Shut up.
/off-topic rant - Yaki, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34*****, he means the comment is depressing. He's not just throwing the word out there.
- Scynet, on 10/12/2007, -24/+17Yeah the problem is that "emo" doesn't have anything to do with music anymore, it's a new buzzword for (over)emotional people. And yeah I agree that it's terribly overused by "teh intraweb kidz" who diss anyone with any kind of feeling towards any matter as "emo", yet always whine on various forums themselves. The ability to feel is what makes us human, making emotionality a negative thing is quite scary.
Yeah, we all hate those annoying folks who whine about their lives and the lack thereof to others, just don't abuse the word. The parent post wasn't exessively emotional in any way. In fact it was quite fitting and insightful in the context of this topic.
Imo. - GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -11/+88Dude your comment about the true meaning of emo was really emo.
- cruzlee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+66I'm 27 and I haven't even reached the second pic. Now I'm emo too.
- 5xSTUN, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8Though leaves are many, the root is one;

Now I may wither into the truth.

I find it a lot more depressing when the woman isn't there though.
Check this out: http://img409.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wowplayerih9.jpg - Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Maybe I'm an insensate brick, but I refuse to accept such an emo outlook of life. Sure that's what was happening for thousands of years now, it doesn't mean -though- this will be the fate of me or my generation. You have already seen the offset, the scenery has changed, it's already alien to many (most) of us, life became faster and faster, the same way as the external evolution, the pillar of our civilization.
For those baffling on such screens or become depressed by them, I say see the alternative: http://www.sens.org , http://www.imminst.org , it's not science fiction or a bunch of nutters anymore, it's pure science, just give it a chance because nobody dies from malaria in advanced countries anymore unless he want so, the same can happen with aging, if you let your cells malfunctioning over the years and do nothing for it you will eventually die, but if you do something the same as you did with malaria then you will continue keep functioning, it's as simple as that. Aging IS a disease, it has all the aspects of a disease and if we do nothing for it we will continue dying from it.
Either you'll accept your fate, name the aging natural (as if any other disease wasn't natural) and say we shouldn't play it God (as if we are not doing so ever since we cured the first disease, or changed the locality forever, or even changed the face of our planet at night http://www.geog.utah.edu/~pdennison/geog3110_img/nightlights.jpg ) or do something for this whirlpool of knowledge and wisdom and actually help curing it. The simplest you can do is donate some electricity and CPU power through folding@home ( http://folding.stanford.edu/ ) towards medical researches,or if you like to do something more hardcore donate some money towards the research for aging (the same way as Peter Thiel of Paypal fame did a while ago, http://www.mprize.org/index.php?pagename=newsdetaildisplay&ID=0107 , even $5 should do it), or if you a real hardcore take a career on bioengineering, bioinformatics or genetics. - im2emo4myshrt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Hey, take it from an expert noah use of emo was correct.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I'm neither a philosophy student nor a native speaker so I can't have the best way with the words, but my comment was not made by a juvenile and it was quite informative since most people are not aware of the anti-aging scientific front. I think my post requires an intelligent rebuttal and not -just- sterile digg down/burying. Many would argue that it has no relevant value with the content of the picture -shown- alone, but I would argue back that it has everything to do with the depression most of the people feel seeing such pictures because -let's not hide before our fingers- it's easy to understand that most religions are being based on this very fear of death and that's exactly what causes the depression, you wouldn't be depressed by such a picture if after the midnight you knew that a new day starts, the singleness of that day gives you the chills....
So please people an intelligent rebuttal, for the sake of god, not sterile solutions - gpd209, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4darnit, I blocked noah earlier today for being a jerk on another article, and now I'm missing all the action. How do you get someone back?

- AnotherAtheist, on 10/12/2007, -39/+12It's only depressing because it bases life around ***** (one person at that!), as if it is all there is to live for; that old man could just as easily be enjoying some strippers in Vegas. Life is never this simple, if it were we'd all kill ourselves after our first died.
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+48Uhh...there is a decent difference between a stripper and someone you actually care about. You'll understand once you find yourself a girlfriend. "John Titor is the name used by the person or persons claiming to be a time traveler from the year 2036 who posted on several time-travel–related bulletin boards during 2000/2001. In these posts he made numerous ambiguous predictions about events in the near future, starting with events in 2004.

- CptofMySoul, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yes, that's what I instantly thought about too. However, I don't remember "The Giving Tree" quite as fondly. When I was in junior high, a graduate student came by to read the book to the class. Then, we had to take a survey about it. Turns out, she was doing research on whether or not the book is sexist. Recall that the book always refers to the tree in the feminine. The graduate student read the book to three different classes: first in the original form, next with the tree referred to in the masculine, and finally with the tree referred to neutrally.
Unfortunately, I don't know what results she got.

- evilregis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I second that. I've made it into a wallpaper, but a clean version of this would be amazing.
- Octanum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Here's some versions with less artifacts:

- Slipknotic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Somehow the 404 error describes how much of a life i have about right.
- Snoochy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3at first i was like "what a bunch of gay". but i just had an epiphany over some flavored coffee, and now its hard to type with all these tears in my eyes. its like, life is something that happens, then doesn't happen. we are the tree. we live, grow leaves, then get chopped down to make crosses for dead people.
every philosophical and religious belief structure that has ever been thought up is now moot. i choose to live my life by the picture now. all hail tree picture - CrashMcLarson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I found a similar one on deviantART:

- Americanilja, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I loved it and didn't find it hopeless but hopeful. Yes, we all are born, live, love and die. Fortunately for those of us who believe in the meaning behind the crosses on their graves are comforted with the knowledge that we will see our loved one again someday but this time forever.
- t3soro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1or not
- silentsteps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I especially love how the surrounding also changes, like the trees. Very thoughtful.
