- unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -8/+132i just moved one on top of the equal and made an inequality sign
- BLyn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+107So, if i were to go to a doctor and told them I had something wrong with my frontal lobe i think the inevitable question would be "how do you know".
Then i reply "i found out on Digg". - Boshow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+89It took me a couple seconds for each. and i've never had any brain damage-amage-amage.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/11/2007, -5/+58I am sopeslupedy mnetllay rdeatred I gseus.
- desistere, on 10/11/2007, -2/+48That was easy!
wait... Oh noes my lobe! - jd33, on 10/11/2007, -3/+49I just lit them all and said "***** It"
- AmishRefugee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30that's what I did but apparently the creator "corrected" that by saying this:
UPDATE: The only valid symbols are Roman numerals and "+", "-" and "=". (Thanks Benjamin!)
way to keep people from thinking outside the box - egotripping, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Just go by the rocky movies.
- diggeon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Don't worry, you just have the typical digg brain damage you didn't RTFA. It's the second puzzle that people with frontal lobe damage out perform people without.
- JigoroKano, on 10/11/2007, -7/+257 != 2-3
4 != 4-4
are both valid mathematical inequalities. - Roguecop, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18So thinking 'out side the box' equates to drain bamage? Well I think it equates to a critical thinking 'dangerous mind'.
- bonyicecream, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I feel absolutely retarded for not getting that last one. good god.
- a3r0, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Dumbass
- guywhodoesstuff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Im either really not brain damaged or really tired.
- acetv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Those would be *not* roman numerals.
- mrgreenjeans, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Thankfully that first one was supposed to be an easy demonstration and the second one was to be the difficult one.
I was thinking about when I was 14,
"I knew my parents should have taken me to the hospital after I flipped my bike and landed on my head!" - HairyFotr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I - ichi

I hope they taught japanese :P
(there's always wikipedia... on roman and japanese numerals) - mace2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Also acceptable: I read Digg.
- wakarimasen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8haha, bigdd063 has brain damage!
- carpespasm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9i did the same thing. sucks that you can't use valid mathematical stuff to make a valid mathematical statement
- WaterDragon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6yes, and additionally, WHAT is the roman numeral for zero? I don't think they had one. The romans were a wealthy and proud people, who always had something, and never had nothing.
In ancient Roman arithmetic....if I have five, and you take away five....I simply kill you, and then I have ten. Nobody should ever be deprived of their last one of anything! - Graeleight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6IV - IV = 0 not -IV
- steelese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I feel absolutely retarded for getting the last one now.
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5From the site:
"I agree that the inequality sign must have been disallowed in the protocol but accidentally omitted from the writeup. Otherwise it is a valid solution to almost any matchstick problem, and thus does not require "out of the box" thinking (the real point here)." - WaterDragon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8usually, when some kind of test is made up by pretentious 'psychologist' types, it ends up being a fake. I solved the first one in a few seconds. But with the second one....oit is not a valid problem, since they referred to them as equations.
IV=IV=IV is not an 'equation', since an equation shows TWO things that are equal, and not THREE.
So it is BS! I considered their solution, but discarded it on those grounds. It is better to make the not-equal sign, but that is not permitted. - treed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Well of course you have to have brain damage to think you can go from "IV = IV + IV", move one line and get "IV = IV = IV". The horizontal line from the plus must also be moved, else it'd be in the spot between where the lines are for an equals symbol.
FFS. - Shelby69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Obviously he meant 'go by' the Rocky movies. Because there are so many of them. It's a joke, you geek.
- WaterDragon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5One day in Brooklyn, New York, there was this carpenter who was applying for a job. They were looking for someone who was really creative and could think outside the box, so they tested him with three questions.
1. Can you represent the sum of two plus one, without using any numbers?
So he drew a picture of a tree.
"What's that?
"It's a friggin' tree!"
2. can you represent the product of three and eleven, without numbers?
So he smudged the first drawing a little, with his pencil.
"What's that?"
"It's a Dirty Tree!"
3. Finally, they asked him to represent 100 divided by three.
He thought a minute, and then drew a little dot next to the tree in the same drawing.
"What's that little dot?"
"It's a turd. Dirty tree and a turd! Now do I get the friggin' job?" - Kier, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I got IV = IV = IV first time, within 10 seconds. Am I *****?
- SaxxonPike, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5The answers are so simple... I actually feel stupid for not having realized them right away.
- MasterUrza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5So apparently most of the users on digg have dain bramage, not that that's any surprise to us
- Darkhacker, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9Solved both in a few seconds and although I don't have any brain damage, I do have depression, SPD, and CFS.
- Renton, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Good job, now try doing it while following instructions.

No sticks can be discarded, an isolated slanted stick cannot be interpreted as I (one), and a V (five) symbol must always be composed of two slanted sticks. UPDATE: The only valid symbols are Roman numerals and "+", "-" and "=". - WaterDragon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4One day in Brooklyn, New York, there was this carpenter who was applying for a job. They were looking for someone who was really creative and could think outside the box, so they tested him with three questions.

"It's a turd. Dirty tree and a turd! Now do I get the friggin' job?" - deadowl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yea, that was easy. Back in the days I hit my head a lot. One time my sister pushed me out the window and I slammed it on a pile of rocks. Still get good grades though. True story.
- JigoroKano, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5UPDATE: I changed the rules so JigoroKano is wrong.
- v413, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Had you used your intelligence (that you claim you have) you would have understood that you most probably fell in the category of the healthy 43% participants that solved the two problems. Claiming that you are retarded based on solving these two, means that either you are joking or that you are really stupid (or at least lazy to think).
- undersky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4but it took me 4 minutes for the first one and about 10 seconds for the second one.
- CptCancer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Rocky VII "Adrien's Revenge"
- eaasness, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Well I didn't get the second one right, so there must be something wrong with your frontal lobe!
- Elliuotatar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4-4 = 4 - 4?
Um... No. - smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4what's SPD and CFS? i solved both in a few seconds too (about the amount of time it took me to decipher the roman numerals in my head). i don't think it's anything to be alarmed about though since the title kinda gives away the fact that the problem requires a creative solution, so we aren't approaching the problem with the same initial mindset as the test subjects.
also, i think this phenomena simply illustrates an aspect of neurodiversity. everyone thinks differently, and some individuals think drastically different from others. society likes to prescribe a certain range of neurological states as the "healthy" norm, but this is very culturally subjective.
i've been diagnosed as bipolar, and i admit that i'm probably kinda weird to most people, but that's a good thing. one mind isn't necessarily better than another just because they work differently. i mean, look at most famous artists, writers, thinkers, etc., they're all pretty eccentric. there are always trade-offs, but we need to stop trying to label people who are outside of societally prescribed norms as sick or unhealthy, and just accept that there are benefits to different kinds of thinking. - yahoofrom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3i solved the first puzzle in five minutes and the second puzzle in five seconds.
everybody stop. i dropped my brain. - robdiggity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I could not solve the second puzzle, and I am down with OPP.
- Tiak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's a connotation thing, in this case "move" means "ultimately change the position of in any meaningful way" not "disturb through motion".
- orangemarmalade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Apparently I have brain damage.
I can't say I'm surprised. - petershultz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I had a hard time with the first one, but I got the second one in a few seconds. My brain must be broken :P
- AngelBunny, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I figured both out then read the text. I hope I don't have brain damage. O.o
- PyroKrypt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I now HATE matchsticks.
