- realunderdog, on 11/13/2007, -14/+60What else do you expect from a nation where 25 % of the population can't find Iraq on a map.
- ynggrsshppr, on 11/11/2007, -3/+39To be fair it does look like a trash container.
- hpot, on 11/12/2007, -4/+32one mans trash is another mans soap.
- mikesbaker, on 11/13/2007, -16/+42in other news 78% of all statistics are made up on the spot but only about 29% of the population know this to be true
- khail250, on 11/11/2007, -1/+26If it was NYC it would not be in the trash can, it would be allllllllll around it, by people that still wanted to throw away their trash
- micklerlop, on 11/11/2007, -3/+25don't use a trash can as a food drive container then. why is it so hard to get nice large recycled cardboard boxes?
- Napoleone, on 11/10/2007, -2/+20Somewhat of a judgment call there, but they're definitely jerks.
- LeifErikson8, on 11/10/2007, -3/+18that's sad :(
- ejtttje, on 11/11/2007, -1/+14Hey! I work in this building, saw that sign too!
I should point out this barrel is next to a cafeteria area, and you notice it's next to another (better marked, imho) food drive box, so I can see people mistaking the box as the food drive and the barrel for trash... personally, I thought the sign was a little overdone, a simple "this is not trash" would suffice since I like to hope people weren't doing it intentionally. - doomdayx, on 11/11/2007, -0/+13Hah, thats at Carnegie Mellon. I recognized the bricks on the picture and then subsequently noticed the CMU logo. I would bet its likely to be an honest mistake, as that is a classic case of poor interaction design (http://www.asktog.com/). The... garbage bin.... for lack of a better description simply 'affords' throwing garbage in, especially considering that many bins have stuff like posters plastered on the side. Some may have thought that the Food Drive sign on that bin was a joke, because you may notice the real food drive bin on the left. All in all the person that chose that bin simply should have chosen something that looks more like a normal food drive box if they wanted food in it.
- weiwuwei, on 11/11/2007, -4/+15Perhaps it appears to be a trash can, especially to children or other people who can't read English yet.
- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -1/+12We have something similar at school except the sign reads: "The library book drop is not a trash can. Library books only, please." In all fairness, the book drop is in the cafeteria.
- TheMidnight, on 11/10/2007, -3/+14So zombies use food drive containers as trash cans? That's why graveyards aren't covered in litter...
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -2/+11Buried for breaking rules 1 & 2
- JFitzpatrick, on 11/11/2007, -0/+8People don't need to know who the last five leaders of their country were, where beef comes from, how to do long division, or what function honey bees serve in the global ecosystem. However knowing such things certainly makes the world more interesting and prevents people around you from thinking you're a complete dumb ass.
- mathmanjeffy, on 11/11/2007, -0/+8real,
As a teacher, I expect the actual % to be much higher. - ZenMojo, on 11/10/2007, -0/+7They use litterers as food drives, to be honest.
- omegaant, on 11/10/2007, -1/+7probably can't read f-o-o-d d-r-i-v-e...
- Philonius, on 11/10/2007, -0/+6In the cafeteria? If it had been that way in my school, there would have been things like soup and jello tossed down there every day.
- bmc31190, on 11/10/2007, -0/+6wow.
- Inverno, on 11/10/2007, -1/+6...
- LeifErikson8, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5South Park reference
Kyle: "A quarter of America is retarded"
Cartman: "Thats not true dumbass"
Kyle: "Yes it is, look, there are four of us, and you are retarded, thats one fourth!" - MikeFallopian, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4Definitely a poorly designed human-receptacle interface.
- Sublime40oz, on 11/10/2007, -4/+8Dugg for the Fight Club.
- ToadLeg, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4Read it again. "Thanks to the people who are using this food drive container as a trash can." He is saying thanks to the people who are using the container as a trash can. He is not saying "thanks to you, we have to..." or similar phrasing. It is grammatically correct.
- Modulo, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4dumb enough to set up a food bank donation container that looks almost exactly like a trash container?
- CatalystGhost, on 11/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, finally a rules 1 & 2 thing that I can actually agree with :/
- Scopitone, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4I have so little faith in my underlings that I actually moved a can for Fire Relief victims out of the break room and into the hallway to avoid the morlocks tossing their calzones into it.
- tytanium0503, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4stupid description
- Philonius, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3Upmodded for being the first human in history to write the phrase "morlocks tossing their calzones."
- Mephisteus, on 11/11/2007, -2/+5If it looks like a trash can, smells like a trash can and is used like a trash can. It probably is a trash can.
AKA, one schmuck throws something in, others will follow.
PS
I agree with the not using a trash can as a food drive container statement above :p - thefreak, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3It looks like a freaking trash can. How often do you actually read a trashcan? I can see how some people could mistake the food drive bin as a trash bin... On the other hand it could be some heartless bastards planing dirty Satan.
- Mabu, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4Here's a brilliant idea: put a trash can next to the food drive container... then you can collect food and save your soul. In half the time it took to write out that childish, passive-aggressive sign, the problem could have been solved.
- Zippo, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2In my experience, people rarely bother to look when throwing away their trash. Any kind of holed, deep, bin of any shape or size is considered a garbage bucket.
- bCabulon, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3I'd expect them not to throw trash in the food drive container.
- evildeadguy, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3i think the anger should be directed more towards the person that put a ***** TRASH CAN next to a food drive box and did not expect it to be used as a trash can.
just use another box instead. - Error601, on 11/11/2007, -3/+5Some people really need to relax. Maybe they should consider it's their own fault for not making it clear enough what it was for.
- melonhedd, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1[citation needed]
- bCabulon, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Referring to employees as morlocks isn't cool.
- carpespasm, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1yeah, i'd say they should have put a sign on it in the same place as the one in the pic that says "Food Drive Can". Then people getting ready to use it as what it otherwise looks like have to take notice of the out of the ordinary thing sitting on the part of a trash can they use, and the only part they usually look at.
- xtc46, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1knowing the honey bees function does not make people think of you as less of a dumbass.
- Ethdawg, on 11/11/2007, -2/+3Ironic being that those same 25% of people are the ones who think our troops should still be in Iraq.
- noahhoward, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1You know except for the signs that say food drive.
- xtc46, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1filling vodka bottles with water and putting them back in a cabinet...also filling water bottles with vodka and placing them back is also mean.
As teens we filled water bottles with vodka to carry around school or when we were wandering around at night. One day I was really thirsty and found a bottle of "water" in my car. It was really hot out so I just chugged. It was vodka...stupid friends leaving vodka in my car. - GodIsntReal, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Hahahahaha
- bCabulon, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1the first time I read it as "Thanks to all the people who are using this food drive container as a trash can, you have no soul." This made me do a double-take. It was written poorly.
- jggr, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1I agree... You don't put a bin up, and then just a sign on the side. We've all been desensitized to many forms of marketing, and as such, we sometimes just don't read the signs. If I was in a hurry, and just walking by, I could see me using that as a trash bin as well.
/Note: The pic doesn't give me a sense of 'where' this bin is located, so I'll reverse my opinion if the bin was placed in such a spot that mistaking it for a trash can wouldn't be a reasonable thing to do. Here's a tip: USE A BOX! They don't look like trash bins.
Edit: like the box that was sitting next to it. Perhaps people just thought that was the food box, and the bin was a garbage bin.
Moral: Don't blame me, because you can't make things clear. - inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1If this is NYC, someone's probably gonna steal that sign (and the trash/fooddrive can).
- dustysquareback, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1I thought maybe Aqua Teen. "One mans waste is another mans soap"
- ayeroxor, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Bah. I read it too quickly; I thought it started "To the people that..."
