- answr42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Thats a surprise...
NOT! - RamanujanRedux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Great, just what we need, disgruntled Iranians who can't get their online fix of skateboarders running into walls.
I'm sure they'll figure ways around it though. Iran has been fundamentalized and sanctioned for years and is still the most modernized nation in the region. This is hardly different. - daveddd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Have to ask, wheres the video of the soap star, Link?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17This would have been double the funny if they'd banned it in Kazakhistan
- jacobmiller, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@foolfromhell
Actually Wikipedia was also blocked, along with Amazon.com, IMDb.com and The New York Times, see:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/technology/iran-net-nanny-blocks-youtube-and-wikipedia/2006/12/04/1165080877052.html - saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Actually, in northern Iran and especially in Tehran, the people and the cities themselves are very techcentric. The government has relatively little control over what the people view in the in countless internet cafes from what I noticed when I visited Tehran this year. Fascism is not evident when I see teenagers watching highlights from the world cup and foreign journalists updating their blogs.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17At least its not Wikipedia
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16My god, I wish people would stop equating Islamic fundamentalism with fascism! It's retarded, backward & stupid, but it isn't fascism. Find a different negative tag for it, please!
- kassaralzabadi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Youtube is also blocked in UAE
http://www.itp.net/news/details.php?id=21696 - otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I waste so much time on Youtube. I bet national productivity will increase.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You say an Iranian celebrity was having sex on YouTube?
... NICE! - osarhan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It ain't fascism!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6unfortunately for her, it wasn't an overnight fame as it was for Paris Hilton. instead there are talks of public lashing for the poor girl and her half ass boyfriend fled the country to Dubai. there's a $10k reward on his head :|
i'll give her the dignity and not spread the link but her name is Zahra Amir Ebrahimi for those so curious lol
my first impression after watching: they can't *****! haha
cheers - NiNiCraftOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Is this the video? I'm not a big watcher of Iranian TV so... Maybe it's her...maybe someone else...
http://www.totallycrap.com/videos/zahra_amir_ebrahimi_sexvideo/
Seems like a pretty tame spycam type thing.... Hardly worth banning unless you usually only get to see women hiding under their sheets.
Go Go Iranian Hedonism! - justconnor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9ridiculous. why ban YouTube? at least there is a content filter, go after more profane sites if anything. but YouTube?
- Wonderhat7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Reading all of that, it really makes you think of how fortunate we here in the U.S. actually ARE to live in a land that has the first amendment to the Constitution that we do. I mean, I use Wikipedia and YouTube so much... And, though I don't often use Amazon, I acknowledge that so many people in this country do. I mean, I can't even imagine not being able to speak my own mind about current affairs and disagree with the majority, censoring everything one says.
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@NSU
Critics accuse Iran of using filtering technology to censor more sites than any country apart from China. Until now, targets have been mainly linked to opposition groups or those deemed "immoral" under Iran's Islamic legal code. Some news sites, such as the BBC's Farsi service, are also blocked.
The clampdown was ordered by senior judiciary officials in the latest phase of a campaign that has seen high-speed broadband facilities banned in an attempt to impede "corrupting" foreign films and music. It is in line with a campaign by Iran's Islamist president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to purge the country of western cultural influences. - jacobmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@Osjpr
Um, no. There are porn versions of youtube out there ( http://www.pornotube.com/ ), and they're not censored by the government. Youtube has decided for itself that it doesn't allow pornographic content. - geekee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Ahmadinejad makes Bush look liberal in comparison
- NoStoppingUs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10it has nothing to do with islam.
ahmadinajjajkajdfioed is just a douche. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's time some american foreign policy critics, not necessarily stopped criticizing the united states, but started seeing that lots of bs comes from other countries too.
- KenOh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@ foolfromhell
You got that right. When I got to China 3 months ago, it was bad to find out that Wikipedia is blocked here. But then it got unblocked, only to be reblocked a couple weeks ago. This is torture. - Fjosnisse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3they already had one.
- Daedalus17, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Honestly who is surprised by this "news"? Do we always need to hear about all the rights that Iran/China/Etc. is taking away from its people everyday? Yes they are totalitarian governments and the people there have it pretty bad. We get it already!
- Spamiclese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wait... what's this about a TV star having sex?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It mostly appears to be because of the Islamic codes of propriety. Think heavy censorship on sexuality, erotic displays. Both things which are rife on Fark (duh) & YouTube.
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm surprised that they haven't blocked it already.
- moxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can't they just use a proxy?
- ingxia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Americans have the freedom to censor themselves. Thank You.
- GonzoLiga, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Count your blessings, West. You get to read about this stuff, and comment on it. Patriot Act messing up your day, poor baby? You don't know the definition of a messed-up day. But get out in the world a bit more, and you'll learn.
- sstidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The whole video:
http://www.robont.net/get_file.asp?filename=http://s184048168.onlinehome.us/protected/Zahra_lo.wmv
You might be able to get it with just the following:
http://s184048168.onlinehome.us/protected/Zahra_lo.wmv
Get it while you can. - jull1234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh for ***** sake.
- peacey, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Once again I am struck by how difficult it is to understand the Islamic culture.
- JoshCBFL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Iran just blocked Fark, too. What the hell is going on?
- daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad it could get her killed...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2another one is in store. checkout date is approaching
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Iran has nearly 70 million people. Do the math.
- compressedaudio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Iran asking for a revolution?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now that is really farked up dude!
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Governments are designed to get in the way of people.
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They also banned Amazon - which is funny, given that Amazon doesn't even deliver there ;)
(at least Iran is not in the shipping address drop-down) - jull1234, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'll be here all week.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sorry, but us American's have to stay by the McDonalds and Walmarts while we argue with each other never getting anything done or agreeing on anything.. kkthanx.
- Screwy1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I feel the more it's talked about, the more likely it can be changed. This is more true within those nations but we shouldn't discourage it. Talking about something over and over again is how the idea becomes mainstream and it's how change happens over time. We're seeing the same trend with global warming. Eventually it will be common knowledge, change will happen, and we'll actually do something about it.
- Fjosnisse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Just a quick side note.. The title "With some 7.5 million surfers, Iran is believed to have the highest rate of web use in the Middle East after Israel." isn't accurate. The population of Israel is only 6.3 million with an estimated 3.2 million internet surfers. Its a non-essential detail, but then again, something to take note of.
- Daedalus17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"we'll actually do something about it"
You mean like invading and creating a new government? This reminds me of those people with the "Save Tibet" bumper stickers. They feel better by saying that but if someone actually came to Tibets rescue against China there would be international outcry and the country rescuing them would be "evil" like America is in Iraq. - Screwy1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'rate' generally implies something per something.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5people are calling it that because their daddy white house have used the term constantly, so they unquestioningly adopted the term on political whim.
- JAWS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've looked a bunch on YouTube under "Zahra Amir Ebrahimi" (her name supposedly) there's NOTHING there (removed?!)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually, Iran has 68 million people, so 7 million people is less than 10%. whereas it appears Israel has 50% of the population surfing the web. i think the title was refering to users per capita
