- zsherwood, on 10/10/2007, -5/+100I guess no one at Digg has been to a baseball game, but this is pretty common when watering the field.
- GeorgeWKush, on 10/10/2007, -18/+109They must be working for Haliburton.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+85....looks like a Pennsylvania D.O.T. crew.......
- axisofphilippe, on 10/10/2007, -23/+103Answer: Hardly working.
- raymore, on 10/10/2007, -5/+75Inaccurate. There is a method. They need to water the large area of the dirt infield by hand, but to carry and pull a hose that distance, and still allow no kinks is a more difficult task for a single person. It just makes sense to use your head at jobs like this.
- hmmdar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+67we don't go outside much
- stephant, on 10/10/2007, -6/+69I love how they digg you down and they know NOTHING about it. Not only do they need to water a large area, they also need to NOT DRAG THE HOSE. No kidding. You can't just drag it across the infield dirt or grass like you would at home despite what you diggers that do nothing think. Those fields are meticulously manicured and they won't drag anything across them. Drag across dirt and you mess it all up. Drag across grass and you ruin the grain and cut. But you guys knew all that. You diggers know everything.
- Unholy, on 10/10/2007, -12/+627 guys to hold down a hose...
I was going to mention that they might all be there to make sure the hose doesn't make an imprint in the grass, but if that were the case, they'd have bigger problems to worry about with the remaining 10 footprints.
Either way, NOW we know why we have to pay so much more every year for tickets. Well, that and because of Alex Rodriguez-sized contracts becoming the norm. - redcard, on 10/10/2007, -1/+41I've actually been a member of a grounds crew for a small league over a summer. It may SEEM like a waste, but the water spray is SO light , that more than one hose overlapping could get the ground too wet.. and it's FAR easier to move the hose around and take it back in (You do this in the middle of an inning) when you have 10 people carrying the hose.
Plus.. remember that you've got a crew of ten to put the tarp on anyway. - CMaff24, on 10/10/2007, -4/+43You didnt know they water baseball fields with mercury?
- ajskhan, on 10/10/2007, -8/+44How many idiots does it take to water sand/dirt...
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -5/+39Apparently, you've never met a baseball coach. They are VERY strict about what the grounds crew gets to do on the diamond. My guess is this one is particularly pissed off about hoses laying on the field.
- acex23, on 10/10/2007, -5/+34must be a union job.
- mrfunktastic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29This is nothing. When I was on Hainan Island in China in '96, the hotel I was staying at had the following positions:
- Bathroom Door Opener Guy
- Bathroom Stall Opener Guy
- Bathroom Sink Turner On-er/Off-er Guy
- Paper Towel Hander Guy
...and in the restaurant...
- Coca Cola Refiller After Each Sip From Glass Guy
But hey, at least it was a job for all of them, and it's the law there that everybody with a job gets a meal from their employer, so it was guaranteed work AND a meal. No complaints, was just a little odd having a dude hang out behind you refilling your glass after each sip. And a dude turning on the sink for you in the bathroom. - dolphumous, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28Looks like EVERY D.O.T. crew...
- afruff23, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22WTF does that have to do with anything?!
- ffejrey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20Congratulations, you win the "I don't get the joke" award!
- Meekus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Don't they do that as to not get hose "prints" in the sand?
- trustcuz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17plus, do you know how heavy that hose is? dont forget its filled with water.
- dugglas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I went to a baseball game, I took this picture a few weeks ago at Shea Stadium and submitted it here:
http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/Do_They_Really_Need_7_Guys_To_Do_This_Job_Pic - OisinT, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19wow... baseball players are such pussies...
- Gustav, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Exactly. When I played high school and college ball, we had to have about as many guys "on the hose" as in that photo. The hose is ***** heavy and you can't be dragging it across the pitcher's mound or the infield since they've already been raked. Cutting the number of guys in half makes it significantly more difficult and awkward to move the hose around since everyone has to stay far enough apart to keep the hose from dragging.
And besides, if they weren't needed out there, don't you think they'd be in the lounge or something? Nobody wants to stand out in the sun holding a heavy hose instead of being inside, shooting the breeze. - XedLos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14thanks for posting the link directly to the image. i hate when i have to wait for the whole page to load . I just want to see he picture nothing more
- insinuate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Just what the ***** could they be talking about? "Jeeze bill you were right, this IS one heavy hose!"
- goodkidyo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13marijuana + digg = http://tinyurl.com/yraa86
- badjoke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10L2Reply
- CCoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Exactly, raymore. And if one were to do it on his own, he would have to constantly whip the hose and drag it to where he wants it, which would unsettle the dirt on the mound, between the bases, the nicely cut grass, etc. I'm Canadian, and I know this. Most (if not all) real grass fields in the MLB use this method.
- majikmixx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9.....the Department of the Redundancy Department.
- Enuratique, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7They water (they mostly mist it) the dirt to keep it down when runners tear it up - keeps the dust down. Pretty obvious.
- goodkidyo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I was thinking the same thing..
http://tinyurl.com/yraa86 - boombume, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8If you walk up to someone at work and say, "Are you workin hard, or hardly workin?" then you are an *****. Please put this stupid and overplayed saying to rest for the love of Zod.
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7That's why they probably wear aeration cleats or they are doing it before the grass is cut.
- richiestang78, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7They do that so the hose doesnt drag on the grass and dirt.
- djAnakin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"this is the way every single major league team on the planet waters the dirt in the infield. They do it not to upset the cut or grain of the grass and so that they won't disturb the dirt or drag it onto the grass."
- yosempai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Ok. The point of this is that one of the crew is just letting a whole bunch of hose rest on the ground. The whole point of having multiple have it is so that it doesn't touch the ground, mess up the dirt/grass, etc.
- Zarokima, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8seven
- jlink7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7What military bases have you been to and seen this? As a military engineer, I must say that you sir are just making ***** up.
- stevedclarke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Ok, I usually ignore the politics here on Digg, Especially the American politics, as it most times ends in mindless flaming, without much informational content. But seriously dude, that was lame. I second afruff23 in asking what the hell that has to do with topic?
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5They're not standing in the dirt.
Let's also not forget that dragging a couple hundred feet of hose when it's full of water isn't as easy as it sounds. Certainly not doing it in a way that won't ***** up the field they just spent six hours mowing all nicely and the dirt that... oh yeah, like I and the grandparent poster said - they're doing this so they don't muck up the dirt with nasty hose prints. As trivial as it sounds, appearance actually counts for a lot. - stunod7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Looks like Wrigley Field to me.
- LloydBentsen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Huh? I don't think he said they were stupid or anything. He went to restaurant and thought it was odd, so it makes him a bigot? Way to go...
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There are 4 pictures in the top 5 Digg stories. We need a picture section.
- RileyKA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Kinda reminds me of here in Japan.. What can be done in 45 min with one guy and a push lawnmower usually has 6 guys with weedeaters thrown at it.
- lemac, on 10/10/2007, -8/+12How many idiots does it take to water the field?
- Fentekreel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4if you ever saw a PENNDOT crew you'd have to agree.....now for these people add about 5 police and 1 massive truck for each and about 9 more people standing around....waiting for the other people to turn off the hose.
- gute123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'm pretty sure this photo was taken at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. The reason for so many hose-holders is so they don't drag the hose over the infield while it's watered.
- Damian91, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well they could be standing around NOT holding things :s
- kcen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6The irony of this situation is that they are watering the field for baseball- a sport in which 7 guys stand and 8 sit around and watch 3 others play...
- tiberone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Sounds like some more material for Bud Light's commercials
"Today we salute you, Mr. Coca Cola Refiller After Each Sip From Glass Guy..." - bamapachyderm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You are an angry, petty little man, cbergeron.
