  • smacksaw, on 12/27/2008, -0/+37I had a small chip on my front tooth from a bike fall. I had a bonded tooth, but it came off frequently. I went to a new dentist to get new bonding and he goes "oh, you should try ceramic veneers, it's the same as bonding" and I said "alright" and went for it.

    I became a little concerned when he froze my mouth. Bonding a tooth is like painting cement on. No biggie. I asked him what he's doing and he says "oh, it won't stick unless I sand it a little" at which point I'm reluctantly "umm, ok..."

    He's grinding quite a bit and common-sense makes me stop and go WTF, mate. I tell him to hang on and get me a mirror. My tiny chip that was the size of the corner of your pinky nail was now a banana-shaped tooth. He took off like 60% of my tooth. I said "This is not what you told me, my tooth was perfectly fine, it just had a jagged edge and you sanded it down to nothing."

    And he says (correctly) that he has to do it to put the veneer on. And I told him - look, you told me this was a new material, not a procedure where you wreck a perfectly functional tooth.

    He took it down to the root. Now it's sensitive. And it's so goddamned expensive to fix that I am afraid to use it at all.

    The moral of the story? Stay the ***** away from Monarch Dental in the Dallas/Metroplex area. I should have sued like this woman did.

    I should add - my regular dentist told me later he did it to make money since he knew my insurance would pay for it. $1000 vs $200 for bonding.

    BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A Bridgeport jury has awarded more than $198,000 to a woman who claims her dentist promised her a celebrity smile, but gave her what her attorney called "horse teeth."
    Attorney Richard Meehan Jr. says his client, Marvalyn Foster sued Stamford dentist Darren Martinez because he promised her a "big, beautiful Hollywood celebrity smile." Foster wanted Martinez to give her a permanent bridge to replace a false tooth.
    Meehan says that Foster woke up from the procedure to discover that Martinez extracted three teeth and made a large bridge that resembled horse teeth.
    Meehan says a jury deliberated two hours before returning its verdict Monday.
    Martinez's attorney, Bruce Gilpatrick, of Stamford, could not be reached for comment.
