Woman fired for giving 16-cent treat to toddler
reuters.com — n attendant at a Canadian restaurant who was sacked for giving a bite-sized doughnut, worth 16 cents, to an agitated toddler.
- 2090 diggs
- digg it
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -266/+42Good. She should have paid for the doughnut, after all she was going to get the thanks for quieting the child when actually the restaurant paid for it. You are a typical Liberal in that you want others to pay the bill for you to feel good about yourself.
- MisteryMeat, on 05/11/2008, -9/+151I'd hate to see you when those Libtard kids come looking for handouts on Halloween. Do you stuff job applications in their bags?
- AlexBellisBrown, on 05/11/2008, -6/+54Stevanoski was banned from having children. Because his kids would have no fun. Ever.
- Drahkar, on 05/11/2008, -4/+28I thought it was because we might end up with clones of him.
- takamalak, on 05/11/2008, -4/+34No, it was because no woman would have him.
- laronde20, on 05/12/2008, -8/+3If you are on digg, no woman will have you, period.
- synystar, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2You'd think the "if you're on digg then girls don't like you" crap would have been buried a long time ago. Speak for yourself.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -51/+7I've heard better trash talk from John Kerry, and that is saying alot. Please improve your form before you try using it again.
- itsthebrod, on 05/11/2008, -3/+31It takes a real moron like you to somehow link this article to being a "liberal." Jesus some people are idiots.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -42/+3Ah but the ones who link it to bash USA ok by you?
- panteradactyl, on 05/11/2008, -3/+14Ive seen better comebacks from a dead mule, which is saying a lot. Come back with better form next time.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -34/+2yaaawwwnnn quite boring panter.
- ClockworksNine, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2Dude, stop with delusion of "USA is perfect if every sense of the word." No country is perfect, if the US was, Bush wouldn't be in power. It does have a lot of opportunities and merits but it doesn't excel in everything.
- Nevarius, on 05/11/2008, -4/+1Could have sworn it was because he would make them work in a kiddie sweat shop?
Got to pay your way ya know, regardless if your 4yo - RAEP, on 05/12/2008, -3/+4They can have fun. Those toddlers just better DAMN WELL EARN IT.
- Stevanoski, on 05/12/2008, -5/+1lol
- Drahkar, on 05/11/2008, -4/+28I thought it was because we might end up with clones of him.
- RomeyRome, on 05/12/2008, -1/+8That's a damn good idea for the next 16 year old I see at my door.
- AlexBellisBrown, on 05/11/2008, -6/+54Stevanoski was banned from having children. Because his kids would have no fun. Ever.
- 40yrOldVirgin, on 05/11/2008, -11/+90Shouldn't you be in Iraq, looking for WMD, wise man?
- sk11, on 05/11/2008, -7/+75Yeah, all these stupid ***** people giving free stuff to kids. Good thing your mum and dad ran a tab system.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -96/+10They didn't rely on some skank waitress to supply me, worked for it themselves. There was a time in history where people were too proud to take charity.
- sk11, on 05/11/2008, -3/+54And what exactly is the difference between a random stranger giving something to you for free and a friend or relative doing the same thing? It's still a form of charity.
You think she's a skank because she acted compassionately for a baby, troll?- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -71/+6In a family there are things you earn from being part of that family. Hey, I bet all you Lib.s had everything given to you, now I understand, nuff said.
- dynelol, on 05/11/2008, -4/+32I'm afraid to learn more about politics because i don't want to end up being a douchebag that can't say anything without liberal, republican, conservative...basically any of those words that scream "i'm an obnoxious moron!" 90% of the time. Save it for actual political issues. I'm sure you can find a ***** of semi-legitimate places to talk about Obama and Hillary and all of that other *****. Take a break.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -49/+5Ah, but sk11, your friends on the Left can make any kind of disparaging remark about America using this story and it is OK with you.
- richporter, on 05/11/2008, -2/+17And unfortunately for you, that time in history never existed.
- Stevanoski, on 05/12/2008, -18/+3Did before the New Deal made everyone beggars.
- RAEP, on 05/12/2008, -3/+7You're right. FDR was a commie and he should've just left our country writhing until someone invaded it.
- buckrogers1965, on 05/12/2008, -3/+5At least FDR paid for his program with taxes, instead of borrowing trillions like the freeloading neocons do today.
- IconoclastStill, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3It did before 1932 and it still does in some households, rp, even though it doesn't have the chic liberal panache of collecting handouts from Big Brother.
- Marshalrusty, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1@ IconoclastStill
You mean like tax cuts that are backed by nothing?
- ClockworksNine, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3Even Soviet Russia had more compassion than you do. Not everything is hard concrete, you sound like a damn robot.
"Beep beep. Liberals = 0, Conservative = 1, troll everything blindly and cause problems where there aren't any. Beep beep."
Buried, reported, ignored. Moving on...
- sk11, on 05/11/2008, -3/+54And what exactly is the difference between a random stranger giving something to you for free and a friend or relative doing the same thing? It's still a form of charity.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -96/+10They didn't rely on some skank waitress to supply me, worked for it themselves. There was a time in history where people were too proud to take charity.
- saxreturns, on 05/11/2008, -6/+52...and you sir are a typical loudmouth retard, in that you turn everything that happens as an excuse to push your own moronic political agenda.
(that's not a dig at all you conservatives by the way... I know real, reasonable conservatives would hate to be associated with this oxygen thief.)- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -71/+7And you leftist don't? Ha.
- dynelol, on 05/11/2008, -2/+50Nobody likes you.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -44/+1We took a vote, it was unanimous, everyone despises you.
- 0xception, on 05/11/2008, -2/+14@ Stevanoski
'I've heard better trash talk from John Kerry, and that is saying alot. Please improve your form before you try using it again.'
-- Stevanoski
This quote seem to aptly apply to you as well. - Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -32/+2No, my form is quite exceptional, actually copied by many.
- Marshalrusty, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2I'll bury their comments too.
- saxreturns, on 05/12/2008, -2/+4Why do you assume I'm a leftist? As a matter of fact I'm a bit of a cynic right now, not really swayed by the left or the right, just hoping for administrations in the US and the UK that will stop completely ***** things up.
- dynelol, on 05/11/2008, -2/+50Nobody likes you.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -71/+7And you leftist don't? Ha.
- Bouncybanana, on 05/11/2008, -3/+26she said she was going to get change but was busy with customers, arsehole. it's not like she asked the restaurant to pay for it
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -63/+13But by taking it she DID, just as you Leftist "don't mean" to ask me to pay for your childrens college education, in the end you DO. I know this logic is lost on you.
- Rikkochet, on 05/11/2008, -8/+23You are the most selfish, arrogant person I've ever encountered. It's sad that I know you're American and you wouldn't think like that if you were anything else.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -42/+2No, you are (makes as much sense as your blathering spit speckled spewage.)
- dynelol, on 05/11/2008, -4/+15Do people realize how pathetic it looks to jump at any opportunity to attack America? I'm guessing....no.
- Rendonsmug, on 05/11/2008, -3/+1Of course I mean it, and I also don't ask. Pay up.
- Serial0Hacker, on 05/11/2008, -2/+1Rikkochet,
I heard about some, French tourist that was snapping pictures, of a Girl that fell down At Mesa Verde. - panteradactyl, on 05/11/2008, -4/+3Hey Stevan, my girl needs to get into UT and.... oh sorry
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -16/+2lol, now for once a funny remark.
- evi1, on 05/11/2008, -2/+2Money won't get you into UT.
- Serial0Hacker, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2Who the hell wants to go into Utah.
- Nevarius, on 05/11/2008, -3/+7He's probably some 14yo troll that gets off on this stuff since he has no life (or a unfulfilled/lacking one). He even swung past most of the conservatives/religious right in terms of compassion and pro-business zeal. Only step left if hes truly serious about what he says is for him to support showers and ovens for anyone below the middle class....in true death camp style. (you know..since their commies/libtards/socialist/16cent donut giving kind person.... dredges of society)
- Stevanoski, on 05/12/2008, -14/+3More a Left solution, re: Destroy little Israel because Hamas is our hero.
- Bouncybanana, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1***** you dude, i pay for my own education, and i believe in personal responsibility more than most "conservatives"
- IconoclastStill, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3Good for you, man (seriously). But be careful, bouncy, you may yet turn into a conservative; you've already made a good start and that is a slippery slope you're on there. ;-)
Good luck with your education (also seriously).
- Rikkochet, on 05/11/2008, -8/+23You are the most selfish, arrogant person I've ever encountered. It's sad that I know you're American and you wouldn't think like that if you were anything else.
- enignock, on 05/11/2008, -17/+10Yeah, of course she said that after she got fired. Forget all of this political *****. She took the liberty to give something away that wasn't hers to give. That is called stealing. Forget about the dollar amount, it is irrelevant. If it were relevant, what amount becomes noteworthy? 1 dollar? 5?
- xerox, on 05/11/2008, -3/+17I don't know when it gets noteworthy, but its not at 16 cents.
- dynelol, on 05/11/2008, -2/+8I've observed many "well, it's the principal of the matter!" people. Know what i noticed about them all? None of them are happy.
- thotpoizn, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1*YAWN* In this case it seems like they wanted to get rid of her, and the rules presented a convenient excuse. That's how it usually works in the real world: the guy the boss doesn't like is the one that gets chosen to be made an example out of. And, in this case, since they backed down on firing her over the donut - we probably just won't hear about it when she gets canned in a week for having a smoke break 2 minutes too long, or spilling coffee, or whatever. Not unless it can easily be hyped into another sensational fluff piece, anyway.
- MioTheGreat, on 05/11/2008, -2/+1In the US, it's $20 if you want a trial for it.
- Bouncybanana, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3you, sir, are a stickler for rules. they could simply have taken it out of her paycheck, end of story.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -63/+13But by taking it she DID, just as you Leftist "don't mean" to ask me to pay for your childrens college education, in the end you DO. I know this logic is lost on you.
- shirosamurai, on 05/11/2008, -2/+56It takes a real kind of delusional asshole to turn something like this into a left vs. right issue.
- flossdaily, on 05/11/2008, -3/+59She SHOULDN'T have had to pay for the treat. By virtue of her employment she's been empowered to act as an agent of the company. It is unreasonable to assume that the scope of that agency wouldn't include ability to exchange an extremely low-value item to promote a more pleasant shop atmosphere.
- shwerm601, on 05/11/2008, -1/+8i totally agree, im in college and to make money i work at a local jersey mikes
we also give out free stuff to make people happy, not charging .50 for extra bacon and ***** like that its silly making the customer happy is better then having a sub thrown at you (which did happen) or being fired for giving away a donut
regardless though, she should know how her employers accept such issues prior to acting on one and then finding out the hard way that at her placed of employment they do not put up with that. - Serial0Hacker, on 05/11/2008, -3/+3Eather that, or kick a brat out.
- Nevarius, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5Its also a wise business plan also. PR is very important and what minor loss in revenue is easily made up in the increase of customers.
- BrainInAJar, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4I used to work at Starbucks where our training materials explicitly said that we were empowered to give away product in reasonable circumstances to keep customers happy.
- Jashobeam5, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Some companies do not favor this policy. I've known some that would fire an employee for giving away anything, even a 16 cent pastry.
- shwerm601, on 05/11/2008, -1/+8i totally agree, im in college and to make money i work at a local jersey mikes
- dizavin, on 05/11/2008, -4/+35dude, its sixteen cents. stop being such a girl.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -61/+10Ah, the sexism of the Left rears it's ugly head.
- iDiggIt42, on 05/11/2008, -3/+44Look, I'm a conservative too, but will you shut the ***** up already? It's people like you who give the rest of us bad names.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -51/+2Sorry, you already had a bad name.
- ByteGuerilla, on 05/11/2008, -4/+13What the ***** happened to not feeding the ***** trolls.
Digg down, block, [report if necessary,] move on. - Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -44/+3idiggedit, I went through 6 months of your comments, not one conservative post. I thinks the lady doth prosteth too mucheth.
- iDiggIt42, on 05/11/2008, -3/+19Maybe it's because I choose to keep my political views to myself instead of forcing them down other people's throats, particularly in non-politically oriented comment threads?
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -33/+3Like the ones who use the story to bash America?
- Kyrgizion, on 05/11/2008, -3/+10There we go again with the Left vs Right... Must be an awfully convenient world you live in, with the good & bad people so visibly separated from each other!
- dizavin, on 05/11/2008, -3/+4actually, I'm not a leftist. I'm more of a centrist if, anything.
thanks for coming out, though.- Stevanoski, on 05/12/2008, -14/+3walks like a duck....
- rhumber, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2hmm, i wouldn't call that sexism, i'm a girl and i say that all the time...
- Jashobeam5, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2You are a female child?
He was saying girls are whiny, so it was an insult.
- Jashobeam5, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2You are a female child?
- ClockworksNine, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3Blah blah blah, my name is Stevanoski, I like little boys. lol.
Chill out man and take your pills, you're losing your mind again.- Stevanoski, on 05/13/2008, -3/+2You like little boys, quite sad. But at least you have the ACLU on your side.
- iDiggIt42, on 05/11/2008, -3/+44Look, I'm a conservative too, but will you shut the ***** up already? It's people like you who give the rest of us bad names.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -61/+10Ah, the sexism of the Left rears it's ugly head.
- isewise, on 05/11/2008, -5/+3Hook, line and sinker on these noobs above me.
- Me1000, on 05/11/2008, -2/+6Actually it is more conservative (you know conservative southern hospitality) to let her keep her job!
Besides you need to look up the difference between socialist and liberal!- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -34/+5If it was still the 1950's I would agree, but nowadays the term means the same, but I will give you this, since most diggers are not very liberal in their ideas, I will agree to call them Leftist like Uncle Joe Stalin.
- Henron, on 05/11/2008, -3/+5I'll just call you Uncle Hitler, then.
- Stevanoski, on 05/12/2008, -14/+3More apropriate for your side, is there one dictator the Left doesn't adore and admire?
- Me1000, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3diggers not very liberal?
:S
I think my sarcasm detector is broken, or you just suck at it!- Jashobeam5, on 05/12/2008, -1/+2Diggers are not liberal, as in broad-minded. Liberals are left leaning, which is far from broad-minded.
- Henron, on 05/11/2008, -3/+5I'll just call you Uncle Hitler, then.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -34/+5If it was still the 1950's I would agree, but nowadays the term means the same, but I will give you this, since most diggers are not very liberal in their ideas, I will agree to call them Leftist like Uncle Joe Stalin.
- heresy_fnord, on 05/11/2008, -3/+26Stevanoski, you're a typical asshat.
- Stevanoski, on 05/11/2008, -34/+2Great comeback. Speaks well for you and your friends. With people of your caliber I see why you run the world, wait....you don't, my bad.
- SickofSects, on 05/11/2008, -3/+8Stop feeding the troll, people.. they love to gorge on this stuff.
- nymphetamine, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2OM NOM NOM NOM
- burketo, on 05/11/2008, -3/+15wow, almost 24 hours and you are still replying... that is some hardcore trolling. I mean it. Most trolls give up after 4 or 5 hours. props for sticking to your guns.
- jdlondon, on 05/11/2008, -3/+4You brandish your opinion like one rule should apply to all companies- in this case it does not! note: 'Timmie's' lets there employees take all the donuts they want at the end of there shift otherwise they throw them out (my wife was told by her residence to stop bringing back the end of shift donuts, 6-7 boxes a night) . 1 Tim bit will not break they bank but instead will more than likely lead to better customer attitude towards staff.
- NathanMcCool, on 05/12/2008, -5/+5stevanoski your not a jackass... you a special type of jackass the type that makes me log in just to bury your every comment (which there are many and none of them positive) even though in know it wont make a difference because the default "do not show this comment" line is -4.
- Stevanoski, on 05/12/2008, -12/+4Typical Leftist, repeat this "Must bury any who disagree", oh you already do? Never mind, and never mind trying to make any kind of proper response to any of my many valid points.
- AROZ, on 05/12/2008, -3/+6I love how you praise your own points. You turned the ludicrous firing of a woman over a sixteen cent act of customer service and humanity which she could have repayed, and which the corporation itself has spoken out against, into some political issue. You've made so many ignorant and disrespectful comments on liberals that even conservatives have spoken out against you. How ***** up you've spoken. It boggles the mind.
- Stevanoski, on 05/12/2008, -7/+3You are mistaken, I have won every point. Now go protest against the USA or Israel or something.
- giveer, on 05/12/2008, -3/+3@Stev
Actually, from a debating format POV, no, no you haven't. AROZ is correct. You raise your beliefs, regardless of their relevance, apply them to the person of your argument without any discourse or reason for doing so, you then insult them for obtaining the quality that you yourself just painted them with. And to sweep the motion, you inform others that your argument, that you never actually addressed, is complete and sound. It is called self indulgence - you have it nailed. It is however, to use the vernacular, funny as hell to read. So please, in that respect, insult me. - frasermoo, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1dugg for feeding the troll a thermal detonator.
- Stevanoski, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2giveer, I only inult those who insult me first, I don't believe you have pegged me with your dissertation but will give you points for being concise and for your polite reply.
- AROZ, on 05/12/2008, -3/+6I love how you praise your own points. [/sarcasm]- generalchaos316, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1I still dug him down for the inability to create a well-formed-comment by not including the necessary tags. :-P
- XanderDee, on 05/12/2008, -3/+2The sad thing is a person like him rules America today.

- retr0grade, on 05/11/2008, -9/+393dug for insane pic which has nothing to do with the story :-D
- Flump5000, on 05/11/2008, -1/+52thats her at work.
- AlexBellisBrown, on 05/11/2008, -0/+27Looks like Guantanamo Bay.

- HyperJack, on 05/11/2008, -0/+7Is is folk dancing? Is it stage diving?
No.... Its jazz hands! - graemee, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4That's anyone who drinks too much Tim's Coffee.
- BrainInAJar, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1TH... Gitmo... It's all the same torture.
The coffee tastes like ***** squeezed out of a koran in either case
- AlexBellisBrown, on 05/11/2008, -0/+27Looks like Guantanamo Bay.
- t0x2c, on 05/12/2008, -5/+2You will never get a high, or drunk, or whatever, like you get after eating 30 donuts.
- jpl7986, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1yeah, atleast post something semi-relevant, like a police station
- dhughes, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4 It does have something to do with the story, that's how you act after drinking Tim Horton's coffee.
- zebubble, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0Lol, nice.
- landosystem, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1it looks like pink plastic army men doing a broadway revue in front of the Amityville horror house...
- Flump5000, on 05/11/2008, -1/+52thats her at work.
- DeskFlyer, on 05/11/2008, -3/+187She got her job back. But still, that was a pretty ***** move for something so trivial.
- socivitus, on 05/11/2008, -2/+32How could her boss get so mad over a little donut in the first place is the question. Good to know that she got it back though
- doctechnical, on 05/11/2008, -1/+22There's one very important detail missing in this story: Did she have the permission of the parent/guardian to give the kid the donut? I thought she was fired over the liability issue of giving a kid something they might be allergic to. If the donut had peanuts and the kid suffered an allergic attack - kiss the franchise goodbye, kids.
- sputza, on 05/11/2008, -0/+13The child was a family member.
- doctechnical, on 05/11/2008, -0/+7Ah, didn't know that. That might explain a few things.
- theratster, on 05/11/2008, -0/+7Actually the child wasn't afamily member (other reports), it was the kid of a "family friend". But yeah, good thing she got her job back, and Tim Hortons gave her the job at a different location too.
- djbon2112, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2They have a policy that normally allows this kind of stuff, but it was apparently the "over-reaction of a junior store manager", to quote a reputable newspaper here in the Toronto area.
- Speed, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1The problem is just that managers at Tim Hortens are usually douche bags (even five minutes late for one shift: fired).
- sputza, on 05/11/2008, -0/+13The child was a family member.
- ThreeDee912, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5The way you worded your sentence, it sounded like the boss got the donut back from the toddler.
- Duggan360, on 05/11/2008, -17/+6Easy, Her boss is Homer Simpson
- dasdef, on 05/11/2008, -3/+19you do not speak foul of homer simpson!!
- Duggan360, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3I didn't =( Homer is the cooliest, I just wen't down a peg by saying cooliest....
- IanPR, on 05/11/2008, -1/+50She got her job back, but at a different Tim Hortons. And they're not bite sized donuts. Theyre TIMBITS DAMNIT!
- thcobbs, on 05/11/2008, -1/+6I wonder what the back story is. Like has she been reprimanded many times over stuff like this, often late to work, etc?
- fivefootfour, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5"Unfortunately the action of the manager of this location was not appropriate nor grounds for dismissal. With an apology from management, Ms. Lilliman has been rehired by the franchisee," --Tim Horton's press release.
They took no action against the manager though, so it's anyone's guess as to what led up to this. In the Canadian Press article, it said the company has a policy of not giving away timbits and that the ones given away to dogs and such were day-olds.
- fivefootfour, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5"Unfortunately the action of the manager of this location was not appropriate nor grounds for dismissal. With an apology from management, Ms. Lilliman has been rehired by the franchisee," --Tim Horton's press release.
- FiveIron, on 05/11/2008, -3/+16The managers at that location had some illegal practices concerning part time employees, and the new ones were all afraid of being fired, so she spoke up for them, and apparently has been the attention their eye ever since.
- crossmr, on 05/11/2008, -1/+8Source? Proof? anything? no? digg on!
- nydwarf, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1This DIGG no proof necessary!
- Nevarius, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Don't know how true that is but it wouldn't surprise me. Many chain restaurants, fast food etc can be very demanding on managers to cut costs any way they can and can be very hostile to anyone that rocks the boat. Then when the ***** hits the fan, the company blames the manager and all is good again.
Of course this could have been just a f'ed up rogue manager. - zaren, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5[citation needed]
- crossmr, on 05/11/2008, -1/+8Source? Proof? anything? no? digg on!
- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/11/2008, -22/+10She deserved to be fired. Stealing on the job = a crime = you are fired (and possibly jailed/fined). It doesn't matter how little you steal, it's still a crime that deserves to be punished.
What if she reached into the cash register and took 16 cents? Would that be ok too?- tyywebb, on 05/11/2008, -5/+1016 cents? Yes.
- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/11/2008, -8/+9Then you have no sense of moral judgement.
- stormgren, on 05/11/2008, -2/+6And you have no sense of perspective.
- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/11/2008, -6/+2Since you are obviously speaking from a criminial point of view, and because we are having a legal discussion, your arguements have no merit. Good day sir.
- burketo, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3no, YOU are having a legal discussion. this isn't a question of legality, it's a question of whether she was right to do it or not and whether the manager was right to fire her or not. I for one think she was right and the manager was wrong. of course technically it is stealing but on a par with plugging your phone charger into a socket in work... i.e. not morally reprehensible by normal social standards.
- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1Well if you actually read the ***** article you would know that this article doesn't have anything to do with whether what she did was MORALLY right or not. And the discussion about whether or not the manager should have fired her IS the LEGAL matter.
There is no parallel between the circumstances in the topic and your analogy. The difference is that your employer ALLOWS you to charge your cellphone at work, whereas your employer doesn't allow you to steal food. - burketo, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2i did read the article, but the whole point of the outrage and subsequant re-hiring of the woman is because it is not a question of legality, rather one of right and wrong... there is a differance.
Substituting criminal laws for social standards and common moral intuition is not and never has been what they are designed for. For that reason the argument "the cost doesn't matter, stealing = illegal" doesn't hold water. It is a common misconception about laws that they hold no matter what the circumstance.
- crossmr, on 05/11/2008, -4/+5And what if she takes 16 cents tomorrow?
in 5 minutes? what about 5 minutes after that? every 5 minutes?
Employee theft is responsible for over 30% of losses suffered at businesses. We have no idea what if any other incidents might have gone on with this employee, we only know what the media blew it up to be.- tyywebb, on 05/11/2008, -2/+3See. I got this idea. Well for every transaction there's a fraction of cent that isn't accounted for. Well, my idea is we just write a program to take that tiny fraction of a cent and dump it into an account we set up. No, no listen it's not stealing because that money disappears anyway!
- fivefootfour, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3What if she can't get enough of all this sweet sweet stealing, goes crazy and robs the store? What if she turns to drugs after losing her job, runs out of money and has to steal to get her fix? What if, while driving a stolen car in a druggy haze she runs over a dog? How many dogs have to die before we put a stop to these criminals?
- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/11/2008, -8/+9Then you have no sense of moral judgement.
- Billistic, on 05/11/2008, -3/+15Wow, sh4rkb1t3.
First off, 16 cents is what it cost for the consumer to pay the store. How much do you think it costs to produce a 16 cent item? 2 cents?
Secondly if the kid was crying and disturbing the peace the cost for the company to give out 1 free timbit to calm the kid down so commerce could continue it well worth the 2 cents the timbit cost to make.- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/11/2008, -15/+5It doesn't matter the cost. It's still stealing. As for commerce, that was an unauthorized action, so it was by definition, theft.
We dont bend the rules when kids start crying.- gemmakicn, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3Actually she showed initiative, sensible companies generally promote such people, funny that really...

- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/11/2008, -15/+5It doesn't matter the cost. It's still stealing. As for commerce, that was an unauthorized action, so it was by definition, theft.
- doctechnical, on 05/11/2008, -2/+15If she took 16 cents from the til AND PUT IT IN HER POCKET, yes, fire her, the amount is inconsequential. But she took a little bakery item and gave it to a kid - that's not stealing, that's generating customer good will. That sixteen cents you're busy bean-counting now will very likely come back dressed up like a dollar bill in later customer loyalty.
- sh4rkb1t3, on 05/11/2008, -8/+6The woman wasn't paid to take matters into her own hands and try to generate "customer good will." She was paid to do what she was told to do. She went against orders, and thus deserved to be fired. It's not hard to understand: you break the rules = you're gone, no matter why you broke the rules.
- doctechnical, on 05/12/2008, -2/+7You really are the pointy-haired-manager from hell, aren't you? "You're not being paid to THINK - do that on your own time, serf! Back to work!"
- TheUndertoker, on 05/12/2008, -2/+2I wouldn't doubt if that douche sh4 is in the military, or was formerly in the military based on the way he speaks...and if that's the case, that would explain his idiotic beliefs.
- Jashobeam5, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1People on this thread cannot understand that theft=crime. I wonder if they just haven't been caught yet for stealing on the job of if they have ever even had a job.
- jitterbits, 8 hr 44 min ago, -0/+1No, Jash. The real problem is that so many people have lost the ability to think critically, and instead need to appeal to authority to find what is "acceptable" and "moral." Of course, that assumes that those in a position of power won't abuse it and form the morals to benefit them, rather than people in general.
- doctechnical, on 05/12/2008, -2/+7You really are the pointy-haired-manager from hell, aren't you? "You're not being paid to THINK - do that on your own time, serf! Back to work!"

It's the principle, right?- Jashobeam5, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Most people who steal something small from the office will continue to steal more and more as losses to the company grow.
- tyywebb, on 05/11/2008, -5/+1016 cents? Yes.
- dizavin, on 05/11/2008, -3/+4these shops are very much like privatized gas stations in Canada. they can be privately owned but still have the Tim Hortons name. so it's probably likely that the shop is owned and run by a money grubbing asshole. I'd be willing to bet that this is not an isolated incident and would be pretty interested in seeing the roll-over rate for his employees and the reasons for termination.
- Guspaz, on 05/12/2008, -9/+8I worked at Tim Hortons for a year and a half years ago. It was drilled into us, over and over, "Do not give away ANY free food, to friends, family, or anyone else. You will be fired."
And somebody later was fired for giving free food to her friends.
Do I have any sympathy for this woman? No. She broke the rules, and considering how much that rule was repeated, she HAD to know she wasn't allowed to do that.
Is it a bit silly to get fired over a single timbit? Sure, but SHE WAS WARNED REPEATEDLY.- DeskFlyer, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3How do we know you actually worked there?
*citation needed - Puffles, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Just because it was "drilled into you over and over" at the place you worked at, doesn't mean they did the same thing at the place she worked at. Not every Tim Hortons is an atomically exact copy of another Tim Hortons.
- NathanielJ, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Funny, because I've been given free Timbits at Tim Horton's on several occasions. And they often put 30+ Timbits into boxes of "20 Timbits".
Even besides that though, just because a rule is stated and repeated does not mean that it's not ridiculous to get fired for breaking it. If Tim Horton's said "don't step on any black floor tiles or you're FIRED!!", would it be OK to fire her because she stepped on one? No, it's an arbitrary rule, just like this is.- Jashobeam5, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Stealling is not breaking an "arbitrary rule."
- DeskFlyer, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3How do we know you actually worked there?

- unionaire, on 05/12/2008, -2/+3i think the firing might be a little too much, but she has no right to use the store's product for charity purpose without permission. She can pay for it afterwards.
"it was too busy" is not a good excuse, i don't buy that story. You can always give it back later on the day.- NSMike, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2How do you know he even gave her a chance to pay it back? What if he fired her on the spot?
- Jashobeam5, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Some companies will fire a checker for taking money out of their own pocket to even up a regiester being under for the day.
- NSMike, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2How do you know he even gave her a chance to pay it back? What if he fired her on the spot?
- djepik, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1I don't get it lucidguru's article just uses information from the reuters article... He's not adding anything, which was the point I was trying to make
- djepik, on 05/11/2008, -17/+7I guess you didn't RTFA then?
- smotpoker, on 05/11/2008, -41/+13Though she should not have gotten fired, some sort of reprimand may have been deserved, IMO. Though it was only $.16, it can add up and set a bad precedent that the company didn't wish to the other staff or observing kids.
Also, you can't tell from the article but it says they fired her after seeing a video tape. Depending on circumstances, it seems possible they may have thought she was showing favoritism to someone she knew (or their kid, rather). If not and this was the first incident where she got in trouble while working there, I would suspect they were just using this as an excuse to fire her for something else even harder to justify- Evazan21, on 05/11/2008, -1/+18I worked at a Dunkin Donuts and gave a munchkin to just about every other kid that came in. It made both the kid happy and the parent more likely to come back due to friendly service. If Tim Hortons is anything like dunkin donuts they through away 100's of them every day anyway. It is nowhere near a "bad precedent" for a company to establish.
- Drahkar, on 05/11/2008, -1/+6Plus if you read the whole article all of the staff at that Tim Hortons gave away the 'Timbits' to children for free. So the singling her out like that was not only bad PR and overreactionary, but it was a direct conflict to the practice that the staff followed at the site.
- smotpoker, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Well, I have never worked at a donut shop specifically but I've worked at several other fast-food type places and we were always hounded about never giving anyone extra anything and never give anything away for free. I must have missed the part in the article where they said it was a common practice at the chain though, sorry.
- tnvwboy, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1I worked at a fast-food resturant where the owners wanted us to not give sauce packets unless the customer asked, because they were CHEAP BASTARDS. We gave them out anyway because it's called GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. A customer leaves happy, they'll come back.
- doctechnical, on 05/11/2008, -3/+3I find it very hard to believe that it was the value of the donut that got her fired, or even the setting of a precedent. I'll bet that between what they drop on the floor, or don't sell, this store alone throws away (or gives to food banks) pounds of baked goods a day.
- flossdaily, on 05/11/2008, -4/+6That attitude is precisely what's wrong with the world today.
- smotpoker, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1You mean the attitude where I try to view the situation from various perspectives/contexts to try to understand how it occurred? I would argue that impulsive reactions to disregard something you don't immediately agree with is more of a problem...
- smotpoker, on 05/11/2008, -1/+6You guys can hate all you want, I was just trying to consider possibilities as to why it could have happened or been justified (hence the suggestion it was probably an excuse for some unjustifiable reason at the end of the comment)... Plus I must have missed where the article said it is a common practice with that chain
I have been reprimanded for petty ***** like this many times at places where I've worked. Giving more than 3 packs of ketchup if it wasn't requested, replacing cups for free, too many napkins, etc. I cannot even count the number of times I've thought I would faint of heatstroke and was denied water because I couldn't afford 5-10 cents for a cup at the nearest gas stations/restaurants. I never thought it was the greatest thing in the world but I always understood how the policy was justified if the business was currently struggling or some such.
Such types of practices may be a lot more common than you guys seem to realize... - williamgauci, on 05/12/2008, -3/+1Walk into any Tim Horton's donut shop and you'll find a dozen of these Timbits on the floor, it was an idiotic move by the manager, especially since almost all of their advertising is based around family values and being kind and caring like all us good Canadians are.
- Evazan21, on 05/11/2008, -1/+18I worked at a Dunkin Donuts and gave a munchkin to just about every other kid that came in. - thedragon4453, on 05/11/2008, -7/+79I manage a restaurant and I encourage this type of thing on two conditions:
1. You have the permission of the Parents. You don't know what allergens the kid as, or if the parents want the kids to have a ton of sugar, etc.
2. It somehow gets recorded for inventory purposes.- bitterbug, on 05/11/2008, -0/+39The owner of the store rehired her at another location as he didn't have a problem with her actions either, but didn't want to put her in a position where she had to go back to work under the same manager.
- Kyrgizion, on 05/11/2008, -0/+13If there is a known problem with said manager, why go through the trouble of relocating employees? Why is it that every somewhat major company in the world would rather go bankrupt and ***** off their entire staff rather than lay off one abusive manager?
- geodescent, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1Because they are hoping the employee will quit over having to drive all those extra miles for minimum wage. It's the classic management "***** 'em nicely" move.
- fivefootfour, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4If you think there are "miles" between tim Horton's, you have never been to Canada. I live in a small city (70,000 ppl) and even here there are 1 or 2 Tim Horton's in every neighbourhood. It would be slightly inconvenient if at all to find another one in London.
- bitterbug, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2They had the option of relocating so there wouldn't be tension between the manager and the employee. The manager may have been overzealous but it's a no-win situation if either person lost their job.

- sourc3, on 05/11/2008, -1/+33Inventory purposes? It was one timbit with a retail value of $0.16. Cost to Tim Hortons? Lets assume $0.08 cost to Tim Hortons.
Assuming the lady working there for three years is making $8/hr. $8/hr is $0.13/minute. To record a single tidbit will likely take 30-45 seconds (pull up sheet, record information, save sheet, return to location) meaning the cost to Tim Hortons for the employee to record the timbit is essentially the cost of the Timbit itself.
Now, I can of course see/understand the principle of the thing, but I don't think a method for keeping track of small items like that would be cost effective and/or worthwhile unless there was a tremendous amount of loss that was becoming obvious.- weezer1024, on 05/11/2008, -4/+4I can see it. Are you giving out 2000 timbits a day or 2? How do you know? 2000 a day adds up, just a few does not. If its set up right then it's not a 30 to 45 second transaction to record it, more like 5 seconds.
- crossmr, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Even a few adds up..heck do it twice and its "adding up" 1+1...
- mattsx, on 05/11/2008, -1/+16better solution: set aside a quantity of timbits - say 20. Use them exclusively for "samples." Once a basket of 20 is gone, pull another 20 out of the large basket and record it. Inventories are then controlled, the kids stay happy, and nobody gets fired.
- Jashobeam5, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Is that how you do things in the company you own?

- HyperionHK, on 05/11/2008, -0/+6Tim Horton's has frequently done things like give away free Timbits to dogs all the time, many many different Tim Horton's.
It's pretty shocking that someone would fire someone over one timbit.
And I also highly doubt it's a big deal if the inventory is off by a few timbits, considering how much they end up throwing out/giving away for free at the end of the night...- whyufail, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah. For the record, the entire inventory gets tossed when the store closes. Everything on the shelf that's still there, boom, right in the can.
- DeadElephant, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Working at a deli I give cheese to kids all the time, If any manager had a problem with that I'm pretty sure id question there sanity.

I think part of the problem is that most managers get hired out of the pool of regular staff rather than from a managerial school. So, they start off with little experience, and either too much to prove or too much loyalty to their staff-friends.- Celeron, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2too*

- barius, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1I understand that they're not likely to hire a million donut shop managers with a secondary education, but ideally, the company would send any new recruits to some form of proper training. It would kill them to pay for night courses...

- djepik, on 05/11/2008, -2/+6Now I think this original firing was as retarded as the next guy, but can someone explain how this hiring / firing works in a franchise like Tim Hortons? I thought that each individual branch was responsible for all hires/fires so how would the corporation have anything to say about her getting re-hired. (to clarify: I DO think that she should have been re-hired, I'm just not clear on how it was possible)
- FiveIron, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3corporate pressure, they do have to obey the corporation or they loose their franchising license or whatever, but she was actually hired by a different tim hortons store who heard about the incident.
- fivefootfour, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2She was hired back by the same owners, though. They're the ones ultimately responsible, but it was definitely corporate pressure that changed their minds.
- SillyRabbits, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Well, there's always a franchise owner that has the final say about what happens in the store. I can guarantee, however, that the franchise owner saw this for what it was - horrible PR for no reason. I'm sure all the corporate people had to do was call the owner up and point out what was happening in the store (if he/she didn't know already). Corporate may not be able to legally force them to do that (depends), but no owner is going to create ill-will with corporate over something like this - something that never should have happened in the first place.

Also, despite the frighteningly wild popularity of Starbucks, it is one hundred percent possible [ever.] that they would be boycotted if they (read: a representative of Starbucks) did something to anger enough people. While I agree that it isn't likely it would be successful, I suspect my reason is different from yours; it appears you think they wouldn't be successfully boycotted because of sheer popularity, whereas I understand it isn't likely because a huge percentage of Americans are 'blissfully' ignorant.
- rhumber, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4wow, um, where to begin....
- zacmccormick, on 05/11/2008, -6/+6filed under "who gives a *****".
- sjps220, on 05/11/2008, -2/+12They offer my dog a timbit almost everytime I go through the drive through.
- Picard102, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2Those are stale timbits they have for that purpose.
- ThreeDee912, on 05/11/2008, -1/+4BTW, a Timbit is basically a Munchkin. (for those Dunkin Donut customers in the US)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doughnut_holes- issachar, on 05/12/2008, -1/+3I think you mean that a Munchkin is a sad, sad ripoff of a timbit. :P Tim Hortons has somehow become our national icon. I'm not sure how.
- Jashobeam5, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Which came first?

- ecidnac, on 05/11/2008, -2/+9I haven't lived in Canada for five years, so I've only been inside a Timmy's once or twice during visits in that time (and those visits were to small-town locations, where they're generally more relaxed about things). From the comments on this story and related ones in Canadian media, it sounds like the chain has really gone downhill.
- wing05, on 05/11/2008, -2/+5As far as I can tell in the Toronto area, there are always lineups in the drive through and at the store. You'd think they were doing well considering Krispy Kreme got their butts handed to them.
- Jashobeam5, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Dugg down for insulting the best donut maker on earth- Krispy Kreme.
- BinaryFragger, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Yes, Timmies is just not the same any more.
Their donut and muffin and racks are usually half empty (they only have the plain donuts left) and their ice cappuccino machines rarely work. - aroundtown, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2They don't make their donuts in-store anymore, they are made in a giant bakery in Toronto and driven out frozen to the many stores up to 4-5 hours away, where they are thawed and served "always fresh!", the employees do have to put the creme or jelly in them though.
- issachar, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0Timmie's is doing just fine actually. They've probably changed a bit over the last five years, but they've somehow somehow solidified they're position as national icon. No idea how they did that.

- isostatic, on 05/11/2008, -5/+6Do we have to get out the bullhorn and change the world every time something unjust happens? Take responsibility for your own problems. Dugg down as lame.
- hedwigg, on 05/12/2008, -2/+1How dare you question my right to bullhorn! This comment is an injustice! Where is my bullhorn?
- blacklilyninja, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3well im guessing it wasn't a company wide policy and the manager or owner of that franchise was probably looking for a reason to fire her.
