Notice how it says: "Police said the man had a history of sleepwalking and ignored his girlfriend's repeated efforts to wake him up." That means that the girl knew that he was sleep walking and wasn't fully aware of his actions. So ignorance isn't an excuse. I just don't see how you could even think to use a weapon on a loved one. There must be more to the story.
