- AriaStar, on 11/10/2007, -6/+184This is so ***** sad. Her entire life ruined. And now that she might get freedom, she'll be imprisoned still in a deaf body unable to fully appreciate what she should have had all her life. Nothing can ever give her back the chance to have children and grandchildren, the youth we take for granted, and so on.
- Goodbyeworld, on 11/10/2007, -6/+172If she wasn't crazy before, she is now.
- geneticlemon, on 11/04/2007, -5/+107Frightening. It really annoys me how some of the psychiatric institutions of this society base so much of their judgment on personal observation instead of fact and various other medical opinions. If a logic-minded group of people had seen her and spoken to her, I'm sure they would've determined that she was completely sane and worth listening to a long time ago.
- RunawayElf, on 10/23/2007, -5/+55Epic fail
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -0/+48 I did volonteer work once for people coming out of a mental hospital,
This is what i saw:
1. A woman locked up since childhood cause she had epilepsy.
2 A man who they thought was retarded (he was not) and had been locked away since early childhood cause he had a club foot.
So,yes, this sort of thing does happen. - geneticlemon, on 10/22/2007, -1/+39You can state your opinion up and down, but that really has nothing to do with this article. At least choose an article that's even remotely close to what you're talking about.
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -1/+35It is irrelevant. This is about a woman that was locked up for 70 years, not iraq.
- gd1z, on 11/04/2007, -1/+32Don't let any Scientologists see this.
- tmbrwolf19, on 10/22/2007, -1/+31Up until recently, mental illness was seen as a disease. These people were treated horribly and in lots of cases all you needed was someone of reputable medical background to declare you mentally unfit, and you were thrown in a mental institution. These places weren't for rehabilitation, but just to keep them separate from the public. Its only in the last 30 or so years where views have really changed and we treat these people like people. Cases like this are a relic of a different age, and its shocking to realize how society used to think... and I can only hope we continue to progress.
- SilverBlade2k, on 11/04/2007, -3/+33hope the family sues...she shouldn't have been in those institutions all these years.
- jdmcadam, on 10/22/2007, -1/+28Its just that there are PLENTY of other articles to discuss the military industrial complex on, what does this one really have to do with it? Really.
- vinecrawler, on 10/22/2007, -1/+27Suing is America's answer to everything. No amount of money will get this woman her life back and suing will in no way effect the wallets of the people from all of the different institutions who chose not to listen to her.
- dunderballer, on 11/04/2007, -0/+24I don't think there it is possible to give a sane response to being accused of being crazy. I bet this happens more often than we'd like to think.
- EvanVolm, on 11/04/2007, -1/+22Serenity now, insanity later.
- IZasPIE, on 11/04/2007, -4/+25Nothing to say. Amazigly sad! Life is ruined.
- SonicBoom1000, on 11/04/2007, -1/+21You'd think there would be some kind of annual checkup on patients to see if they were still mental or something.
- ErrorS, on 10/21/2007, -0/+20Not really..
- cecinestpasvrai, on 10/22/2007, -0/+19You're wrong, and what's more, you know you're wrong. Your profile shows you frequent digg, and in doing so, you'd notice all the stories about the Iraq war, the neocons, or whatever else is relevant to what you're talking about. Hell, just by checking your profile it's pretty clear you've seen the articles. You can't call out the whole community on "turning a blind eye" when there's clearly a ***** cornucopia of other threads to talk about this in. Give up.
- nyx210, on 10/22/2007, -2/+21Being able to post your opinion doesn't mean that other people will agree with them.
- Jugalator, on 11/10/2007, -3/+21There is no penalty high enough for this, not even death. :-( After all, in a sense, wrongfully living on an institution for your life is worse than death.
- nooreazy, on 11/10/2007, -0/+17THIS ***** PISSES ME OFF!!!!!!!
- Yoggy0, on 10/21/2007, -0/+17This happened to my grandmother, but only for 4 days. She was ill and in the hospital, and they transferred her to another hospital but put her in the lock-down ward by mistake. She kept trying to tell the nurses that she wasn't supposed to be there, but they would just smile and pat her hand and say "Now now, you just lay back and rest". Fortunately, 4 days later my aunt went to visit her and found out what had happened and set the record straight. But my grandma was horrified by her treatment for 4 days, and said she would have really gone crazy if she had stayed there much longer. But 70 years! My god! That poor woman did nothing wrong and had her life destroyed. I'm disgusted.
- masterm1nd, on 10/21/2007, -1/+18I was guessing the first comment would be fascism. Ehh, military industrial complex is almost as good.
- woxidu, on 10/22/2007, -2/+18Being able to post his own opinion also doesn't give him a free pass to being a dumbass.
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -0/+14He's not wrong. http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Woman_Locked_Up_for_7 ...
- Amstellt, on 11/04/2007, -8/+22BIG DEAL if it was already a duped story! I am so tired of you idiots commenting "duped story", "was on the front page a month ago" etc! get a life!
- chrismgtis, on 10/22/2007, -0/+14Or even better, escape and kill the SOBs that put you in there.
- LoveableNerd, on 11/10/2007, -1/+15Un-f***ing-believable. Her family should own that institution!
- Murdats, on 10/22/2007, -0/+14but she wont have to struggle with bills for the rest of her life.
- skews13, on 11/04/2007, -0/+13things like this happen, because no one in any position of authority is ever held accountable. when did we conclude that authority figures are above reproach? we need to pass laws by referendum if nessesary,to start holding anyone in any position of authority.accountable for their actions.in my opinion.not only do we hold them accountable.but they must be made examples of in some cases,or we cannot in good concious look at our own children, and convince them that the law has any relevant meaning.
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -1/+14This isn't about wasted lives as a whole. This is about a woman that was locked up for 70 years.
- Konrad9, on 10/27/2007, -3/+16I probably would have killed myself... I think suicide is disgusting and selfish but *****... SEVENTY YEARS? I couldn't deal with a tenth of that.
- ArkAngel06, on 10/27/2007, -1/+14Which is, sadly, only a few more years. :(
- MBHoy, on 11/04/2007, -1/+14One flew over the cuckoo's nest...
- inactive, on 11/04/2007, -1/+14NOTHING will ever be able to make up for this injustice, but I hope she can sue and get enough money to do whatever she wants for the rest of her life.
- cecinestpasvrai, on 10/21/2007, -1/+13You're supposed to comment on the story. You aren't, you're using it to purposefully bring up another issue to discuss. You knew it would get responses. That's jacking the thread.
- the_snitch, on 10/22/2007, -0/+12because that's alphanumeric, not just numeric. more like, why can the US change to dd/mm/yy like the rest of the world. And while they're at it, why don't they change to the metric system (including temperatures in celsius).
- skodaman, on 10/21/2007, -4/+16Thats the first of October "me old mucker"
- d3sp, on 11/10/2007, -0/+11That's absolutely horrible =/
- slipkn0tz23, on 10/22/2007, -2/+13Go wait in the car...
- AriaStar, on 10/21/2007, -0/+11At no point did I saw she was crazy or not crazy. However, she was in there being falsely accused of stealing a little bit of money.
- smacksaw, on 10/22/2007, -0/+11No, your opinion is irrelevant and technically unsolicited. It has nothing to do with this, even indirectly. You might as well have put in spam ads for boner pills. The entire idea of this thread is to comment on this subject (the article) or wherever it goes. You hijacked it.
- Bamborzled, on 10/22/2007, -1/+11The Telegraph is not a blog. Maybe you're confused.
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -0/+9? Not funny
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -2/+11Psychology from 70 years ago is pretty irrelevant these days...
- mrASSMAN, on 10/22/2007, -0/+9If it were America, she'd get a $500-million settlement..
- Carv, on 10/21/2007, -2/+10Is that our motto now? "In America, you can sue for that."
- Zap2, on 10/21/2007, -1/+8I think death would be pointless...what will do?
it was a mistake, kill someone won't fix it! - lazyrussian, on 10/21/2007, -1/+8Digg ,a discussion forum? Heh, get over yourself...
- logandurand, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6Annual? Try monthly.
