- Roger, on 10/21/2007, -1/+69He's not on MySpace, so I'm all out of ideas.
- syroncoda, on 10/10/2007, -8/+69people in power don't give a ***** about right or wrong. they give a ***** about public opinion and the opnion was that this woman stole a few cents and so just HAD to be incarcerated for most of her life. will she get any kind of an apology or anything? no. they don't care. wasted her life and they don't care because they have fancy houses and cars and lots of money to make these kind of issues "disappear". ***** THEM. ***** people with power who screw it up. they're the true criminals.
- abhinavg90, on 10/10/2007, -0/+49wtf...seriously.. 70 years ? ... they just wasted her whole life...
- TheRedCoat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+52about 26 US cents
- deborah195, on 10/10/2007, -2/+48Hi, I saw this on BBC.news last night and had to call my mom, who's from Britian to ask what 'sectioned' meaned. The BBC article was going on and on but didn't even hint to what 'sectioned' was. I used to live in the UK but don't remember that one. Its like going to insane asylum apparantly. Then I was wondering, I know her mum died, but what about when she was 25 say? Couldn't she just leave? She may have been 'nutters' as they say. What a sad story with a happy ending... so long the poor woman doesn't die due the stroke she had from the excitement. THe article also suggested she knew her brothers by name the second she saw them. All I can say to that is >>> WOW! Good luck to you Gambell family!!
- dazparkour, on 10/21/2007, -1/+461p == £0.01 or 2 cents.
- AllenS, on 10/10/2007, -14/+53Somebody help me understand. What the hell is 13p?
- anachronaut, on 10/10/2007, -2/+38I knew there had to be a good reason that I was seeing "you have blocked insomniac8400" instead of your comment. It's good to see that I didn't block you for a one-time act of jackassitude... you apparently make a habit of it.
- thewump, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30Let's find the doctor.
- baronvonnasty, on 10/10/2007, -13/+37p? isn't that the money they use in Pokemon
- Napoleone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24"Jean had a stroke after meeting her brothers, believed to have been sparked by the shock of the reunion."
Could things go any more wrong for this woman... - theblt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Hey *****, this happened in the Macclesfield, Cheshire (UK). Read the article.
- stklaw, on 10/21/2007, -0/+230.13 British pounds = 0.262704 U.S. dollars
Talk about humanity. - indiephoenix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21I googled "the doctor", but I kept getting references to Doctor Who so now I'm out of ideas as well.
- TheRedCoat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21I can't quite work out whether you think this happened in America, or you are saying that it would never happen in America. Either way...Uh, what?!?
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Just google him. You internet noobs...
- Haidoken, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21what a sad story. Could you press charges in this case?
- Genjeta, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Seriously, it seems like that is almost as bad as murder, you can't even call that a life, its just living for the sake of not dieing.
- Buelldozer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18p standards for pence. One pence is roughly 2 American cents.
- chicoer2001, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16It sounds like something from the Onion. Sadly it's true.
- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16thats xserver2003 for u guys
- tomis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16It's so sad. There's nothing you could possibly do to undo what they did. At the very least the government should make sure she never has to worry about food or housing for the rest of her life. They've taken most of it away. So very sad.
- keyme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16F*ck. Speechless.
- 32bitwonder, on 10/21/2007, -3/+16A woman has been locked up for 70 years for what amounts to petty theft and yet the most common response here on Digg is "wtf is 13p??". OMG!!
- hiPpymIck, on 10/21/2007, -0/+11during my somewhat varied career.. in the 80s i spent a couple of years working in an asylum - you wouldnt believe the things that go on
..some of them sadly really are mad
there are good and bad staff
i quit cos it was just too ***** bizarre - even for me
they keep them stoned out of their skulls mostly - ive heard old female patients claiming they were sectioned pre-WW2 - just for having illegitimate children - so i agree there could be more of them
the thing i remember is
... the obscene pot-bellies (from years of medication) all these old women walked around with
makes me agree with the big Native American guy in One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest - dazparkour, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11P is Pence, there are 100 pence to £1.
13p in dollars ala google: http://tinyurl.com/38opw5
I always wanted to know what someone's whole life was worth. Now I know. - dignews, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9People from England don't sue often it very rarely happens over here, which I personally think is sensible because in the US people get sued for all sort of stuff.
- whorelock, on 10/16/2007, -1/+10It could be worse, she could have been shipped off to Australia.
- ch33sehead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The Milgram experiment tested a person's willingness to obey orders from an authority figure when it goes against his/her conscience. It did NOT test a person's tendency to abuse authority.
- kingkilr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10What was in back then?
- john2kx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1113p is nothing today, but I guess it was worth much more back then...
- ConeOfSilence, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8looks like u are the attention whore here MurkyMunky.
- megarobotguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+713p! Well back in my day you can go to the movies, buy a drink, candy, and popcorn and!! still have something left for your woman. Not much though, women weren't as needy back then.
/ducks, runs, and hides from all the feminist on Digg. - inactive, on 10/21/2007, -1/+8May it happen to you as well since you seem to think it was a good thing.
- moocow1452, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8That's Yen. P= Pence
- Buelldozer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Wow, sorry but your sweeping generalization is pretty false. Many Americans are very conversant with other currencies. I'm one of them. Just because a bunch of Diggers don't know doesn't mean that Americans in general don't know. The population of Digg is not representative of America in general in more ways than I care to discuss.
- naldwell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+713 pounds was quite a bit of money in 1937 actually... but yeah, they mean 13 pence.
- jaknet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Unfortunately once sectioned you do not have the option of leaving, as when someone is sectioned it is done to prevent harm to themselves or others. So those in charge always say anyway. To be released you have to be considered "safe" to yourself and the public. Unlike a prison term where you have a set time someone sectioned is there till "they" say otherwise as that person is not considered to be in a state of mind to make their own decisions. This just shows what can go wrong.
- CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7This could easily happen in the US, France, or any freaking country on the planet.
- tombdigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The doctor is an ass for sure. But this is the government's fault. Every government sees human lives as expendable.
- baronvonnasty, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I'm getting dugg down. P must not be money they used in Pallet Town.
- somabc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7adjusting for purchasing power 13p (assuming they meant 13d [old pennies] which is 1 shilling 1 old pence) is - £2.40 now which is roughly $4.80 currently.

- atrus123, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10This is a sad, disturbing story, and provides one more reason not to trust the state.
- whorelock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Australia is where the Brits used to send their criminals at one point in time.
- Godlesswanderer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+613p = 13 pence
£13 = 13 pounds - TheRedCoat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7That's probably the funniest thing these comments will yield.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7yeah but this is an appropriate matter in which to sue. It's not like "i robbed a bank and the police shot me and now i cant walk i deserve 1 billion dollars"
- WikiEasy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Yeah, you just HAD to turn this into America bashing didn't you? In case you've forgotten, this girl was locked up in a British prison. Geez.
- VgRasta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Is it just me, or did I not see any "Only in America..." comments?
- GotTheGoods420x, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13the pound one of the most important? give me a break...and how can you possibly label an entire country "dumb"? now thats stupid. do you happen to know each value in the american system? penny, nickel, dime...and so on...i wouldnt really expect you to because you dont live here. generalizing the way you do is the only thing stupid. sheesh.
