- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -9/+94from description "she could have lived to be 132". she's not dead yet.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+62So she's an exception..what else is new?
- pimpbot1979, on 10/10/2007, -3/+53When she passes, her ashes will be placed in an ashtray above the fireplace.
- Sell, on 10/10/2007, -4/+51Obviously none you tards read the article. She isnt really smoking as she HAS NEVER INHALED!!!!!
- Jeffmr1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+40Is it just me, or to reach 100 do you have to drink like a fish, be a rope smoker, or live in a third world country? Im taking my gym membership back.
- MikeonTV, on 10/10/2007, -19/+55The title should be 'How a 100 year old women has ended every anti-smoking campaign known to man.'
- N10E, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29These are the kind of people we got to study to figure out how she dodged all the problems caused by smoking.
- ThreeDee912, on 10/10/2007, -7/+32About 10000 people under the age of 72 die each day from smoke-related diseases. 1:10000. Not good odds of smoking and living to be 100, eh?
- smithfly114, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25The kind old lady is lying out of her ass, one does not smoke 170,000 cigs and not inhale
- Jeffmr1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Maybe that's just a local saying. Rope smoker, somebody who smokes more than a chain smoker, cause ropes don't have holes in them.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20rope smoker?
- BooostedAWD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16I'm just surprised she kept count..
- carbonetc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18The tar is holding her lungs together now.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17so people who smoke cigars and pipes are not really smoking either, right?
- MCCULLAH, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17word..she did outlive her husband and son....prolly cause they inhaled all her smoke
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18When she does die, you can be sure The Man will add it into the "# deaths caused by smoking" count. And if she's fat, they'll also do a ++ on the "# deaths due to obesity" count. And they'll be wrong both times.
- jerbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11170,000 cigarettes is only 23 years of smoking a pack a day. Hell, I'm only 34 years old and almost accomplished that before I quit.
- jjacksonRIAB, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I just quit because I actually inhaled. A pack a day for three years and 4 bouts with bronchitis, the last one 3 days ago coughing up blood.
Yes this throws the secondhand smoke myth out the window. If you don't inhale you do not bring the tar into your lungs - the worst you can get is tongue/mouth/throat problems. Try doing that with a piece of tissue and a cigarette. Don't inhale but suck in some smoke and blow it through the tissue. It will be covered with tar. Next do a full inhale into the lungs and blow on the tissue. No tar.
Secondhand smokers are getting very little tar. The plain fact is they just want something to whine about and even though I quit smoking I still hate anti-smokers because they don't really care that people are really dying from this -all they care or think about is their "delicate sensibilities" even though anyone with a tissue paper can tell they're impacted in an almost immeasurable way.
- UrinalPooper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9You're being dugg down for telling the truth. That pisses me off. You're absolutely correct in your assertion that she will be counted among the 'hundreds of thousands of people who die from smoking each year'
- kageki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Has real, natural tobacco really been linked to cancer or is it really the chemicals that's been added to the tobacco that's bad?
Contrary to popular belief there are known benefits to tobacco and nicotine such as medication for schizophrenics. Perhaps not the formaldehyde in modern cigarrettes, but that is also not tobacco. - TheNik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11No you don't. You let the delicious cigar smoke roll and float around in your mouth while you savor the taste.
Experience, *****, do you have it? - Ouzin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8"Despite the numerous health warnings, Mrs Langley insists she's never suffered because of the habit as she "has never inhaled"."
She probably "smokes" cigarettes by drawing the smoke into her mouth using her cheeks, rather than inhaling into the lungs using the lungs. Much like you smoke a cigar. - muniak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Looking cool... duh.
- Ouzin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Allergic Reactions are exceptions. My siblings and I love to eat honeydew melons, but my dad can't eat them because he is allergic to them. My siblings and I have shown that most humans can eat melons, but my dad is an exception.
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7FTA: Despite the numerous health warnings, Mrs Langley insists she's never suffered because of the habit as she "has never inhaled".
Never inhaled? Another part of the article says she smoked to "calm her nerves". How could it do that if she didn't suck down the good stuff? Hmmmm, which is it, Winnie? - TheNik, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10About 10000 people who've never smoked spout smoking-related statistics at the world every day. 1:10000. I've been overpowered. :(
- diggmaddy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Am I the only one wondering where that number 170000 come from? How many smokers count the number of cigarettes they've smoked in their entire life?
- kageki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Is it really the nicotine that's the problem or the 4000 other chemicals in the cigarrettes? Does nicotine alone cause cancer or is it really the known cancer-causing chemicals? We have nicotinic receptors you know.
http://laura-knight-jadczyk.blogspot.com/2007/08/lets-all-light-up.html - xerexes1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The probability of death is 100%. Everything else is just playing with numbers.
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Really?
- 1337Einstein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Holding her breath for 100 years, clearly oxygen is overrated.
- mirzar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6110,000 more cigarettes till i break her record
- TurtleBeoulve, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I have a cousin that survived a gunshot wound to the head. I really don't see what the big deal is about people not being allowed to shoot each other in the head. Another symptom of the nanny state I guess.
- ThreeDee912, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"Nicotine is absorbed from cigars just as it is from a cigarette. Even if you don't inhale, nicotine is being absorbed into the thin lining of your mouth. Smoking increases your chances for cancer of the lung, mouth, esophagus and possibly the bladder and pancreas." - http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/common/standard/transform.jsp?requestURI=/healthatoz/Atoz/dc/caz/suba/smok/alert10252005.jsp
- aliengoods, on 10/10/2007, -13/+19My grandma is in her eighties and she still smokes 3 packs a day. And just because someone who smokes dies doesn't mean smoking was the cause, or even a contributor. I'm not saying smoking is healthy, but open your eyes and see through the 'smoking is the root of all evil' politically correct BS.
- Modiga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6No, this is proof that smoking doesn't always cause lung cancer, which frankly is such an obvious statement it can be classed as a given. Let me spell it out for you, someone who smokes one and only one cigarette in their life is not going to be considered at risk from developing lung cancer. The same thing could be said for someone who only smoked 10 cigarettes or 100 cigarettes in their life time. No one has ever said "If you smoke, you will get lung cancer." What they do say is that smoking increases the risk of developing lung cancer. The more you smoke, the more at risk you are.
- anagoge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I was more interested in the article about Keira Knightley, top right of the page: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=478495&in_page_id=1773
Damn she's getting skinny. Highly unattractive. - Auto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Smoking is unhealthy, no doubt. But then again, nearly every single thing we do today in this world is unhealthy or hazardous to our health, from driving cars to drinking caffeinated drinks. The trick is learning self control and doing it all in healthy moderation. What worries me are these anti-smoking types who want to see all smoking banned in public places. This would be a shame because smoking is a very fun social activity, from hookah bars to cigar sampling clubs. Try it before you knock it, please.
- johnny23, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I agree. Anyone who has dugg you down should go visit a retirement home and see if they still want to live to see 100.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm pretty sure it'd be cheaper to buy a gun. Smoking is expensive.
- tunapez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5My great grand-parents , maternal and paternal, all lived into their mid-90's. Paternal grand-parents died at 75 and 84, maternal grandparents are in their mid-80's, still driving and living unassisted, grampa is a volunteer inspector for the city. My neighbor's 86 and still re-roofs tile roofs on our condos(small roofs, ~200sg ft)
All smokers.
I've smoked for 20+ years and only been to the hospital once, shot a nail through my hand. I wonder how many people die a day from inhaling smog in traffic clogged freeways twice a day?
http://www.nsc.org/lrs/statinfo/odds.htm - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Key word "related". What the stat doesn't do is relate smokers to the smoking related diseases, typical stat skewing.
- jam1n, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Im guessing when she says she doesn't inhale is that she does exhale. When she takes a puff she surely inhales, but then exhales the smoke. Maybe just a generation thing
- jerbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yes it does. Just because I don't like perfume doesn't mean I have the right to stop you from wearing it. No one forces you to go out where there are smokers. There are people in the world doing things you may not like, most of us grow up and learn to deal with it. Stop whining.
- Bluejaye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well, I didn't know your Uncle so I can't say if he was a pussy or not. But, people who never smoked a day in their lives or were even exposed to smoke do get lung diseases such as cancer and emphysema. Sometimes people just get sick.
- CobaltScribe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not everyone who smokes will develop lung cancer, and very few smokers will live to 100. When you cut out the extremes, you find the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6It's not the tobacco that is harmful, it's the other 10,000 deadly chemicals they put into to it.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3She will be the new face for the tobacco industry.
- CerMakAlot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well i'll be. That is kind of shocking to me. I still have questions of how they came to that number, though. perhaps more googling will yield results.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3She remembers the day she started smoking, as well as the fact that she smokes 5 cigs a day. Mathematics probably came up with the figure of 171,000.
