- MrStabby, on 10/10/2007, -7/+40Do you has any idea how pretentious you sound?
;) - Issimmo, on 10/10/2007, -9/+40It should be "when smart people have poor grammar" not to nitpick or anything like that.
- paulmdx, on 10/10/2007, -10/+39"Really smart people .. don’t know the difference between I and me."
What they do know is the difference between what does and does not matter. - archer104, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30"It has only three syllables; that's my correction for today:)"
Replace ":)" with "." - iceperson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Actually, I think "When smart people USE poor grammar." would be "more better".
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19"Sentence fragment" is a sentence fragment.
- ThePixelator, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Dude...lighten up...
The article is about average Americans, not your father. - patterson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Mis-cheeve-eeh-us. I've heard people say it like that quite a lot too.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17maybe i can taught u.?
- bytecolor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Bad pickup line #967: "Hey baby, you can dangle your participles around me any day."
- DarthMalcontent, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11How much credibility does an article on grammar have when the author gets his tenses wrong in the first sentence? "I'm ("I am" - present tense) sitting at a lounge LAST WEEK..."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11That means a lot from someone who is too stupid to operate the Shift key, spell "American", or even spell "you."
credibility = 0 - davecor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I have to read a ton of e-mail at work, and the quality of the grammar used by various co-workers does impact my opinion of them. Poor grammar indicates one of two situations. Either they don't know any better or don't care enough to make an effort to write properly. The worst offenders actually get frustrated when people can't decipher their gibberish, we are supposed to "know what they meant".
Sorry... If you don't care about your writing, why should I? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Some of us might consider it a waste of time, or rude, to be this fussy about grammar. But realise that to those of us with the inclination to use language properly, we are not being "fussy" about rules, but are merely interested in clear communication. People who have the education and intelligence to wield words properly but display these lazy tendencies will be harshly, if privately, judged.
- InferiorWang, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9don't you know that when commenting on someone's grammar you must make a spelling mistake and vice versa?
- dezmo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9not if he means to imply that their grammer is in some way immoral, which is possible
- pokjob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9According to M-W, "mishievous" may be pronounced using three or four syllables (when spelled as "mischievious"). Although the latter is considered "nonstandard", it is listed as one of the pronunciations, nonetheless. For details, see: http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=mischievous . Click the red speaker icons to hear the different pronunciations.
My pet peeve: hearing people pronounce "sandwich" as though it contained the letter 'm'. - NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Do you has what it takes to join the Homestarmy?
- DrunkenPirate34, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11The only thing that bothers me is when people say "I seen it" instead of "I saw it." My cousin used to do it all the time and it royally pissed me off.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I'm a stickler for good grammar but even I found this article too uppity.
- rejoined, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Americain? Dude, you got the wrong country..now stfu.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Or move out of redneck ***** south carolina
- nodonoug, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7it was a joke, hence the emoticon. ever heard of tongue-in-cheek?
- Bastian227, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'll have to disagree somewhat. In writing (or speech), the onus of understanding is on the writer (or speaker). Though I believe a simple slip of grammar should be tolerated, a post that needs a Rosetta Stone should not. A poster has one chance to get it right, and s/he chose not to. Thousands of readers must then struggle through the mess. It is not fair, and it is inconsiderate as fezzen said. So, I don't think it is pointless to point out grammar mistakes of a poorly written posting or comment. It may encourage the poster (and future posters) to get it right next time. Furthermore, your point that the poster cannot edit mistakes is lost on the fact that you have so many mistakes in your comment but you can edit.
- LLLSecretChimp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Up-to-sump'n
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8"Blow it out your ass."
- Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah, some people use it to mean a mistake or some really stupid action. The first time I heard it used like that I almost crapped my pants. I was about 12 or 13 years old and had done something really stupid. I swear to God, my mom was yelling at me and said, "You've pulled your boner for the last time!"
I was thinking, "Holy *****! What does she know that I don't???"
She was wrong, of course. - DarthMalcontent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It depends on the sentence. The simple rule is: take the other person out of the sentence and use whichever word you would use if that person is not in it. "Jim and I went to the store. Nobody else went with Jim and me.
- GiJoeBob, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Vee are zee Grammar Nazis! Vee have vays ov making you talk!!
- draney5, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Nuclear chemist in the arab world? His grammer is the least of my concerns...
- toppgun, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5We have the intelligence to understand it and catch errors at the same time.
- bruinexmo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I CAN HAS PRONOUNZ, BITCH
- julianrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"I've seen it" is right, tho
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6OK, this is bothering me. How can one pronounc mischievous with four syllables? I am not calling you a liar but can someone spell how someone would say it phonetically?
- simpleid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i'm too busy using words to communicate, instead of focusing on them so intently that i miss out on the message being conveyed.
- psygnisfive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"I've got balls of steel."
- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I never read, "Choose only adjectives that thepolkapunk will appreciate," in my grammar textbooks.
- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dear customer,
It puts the lotion on its skin. It does this when it is told, or else it gets the hose. Thanks be to the customer for its understanding. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I didn't RTFA, but intelligence and the ability to learn by rote are two completely different things. It's possible for a 'smart' person to have particularly bad grammar, but most of the time they're really just not as smart as they appear.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Aren't old people in scooters worth around 10 points? Nice one.
- pokjob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2...and that would be the correct way.
- hfactor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4"I" stands in subject position, "me" in object position, what´s so difficult about it? No need for a complicated rule about leaving out words.
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Fun is the grammar Nazis in law school. Legal writing professors take anal to a whole new level. The problem is that I have a slight learning disability. All I can say is that It has been a long tough road.
- wbgo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Me vs I is nothing. It's much worse if you're aware of the correct usage of "fewer" and "less" :(
- cJeremy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2how about this... "different THAN"... that's not right. it's "different FROM". this kind of bothers me also. =D
- orlyfactor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Do we need another blog entry to tell people that they suck at English? Buried.
- w00tfest99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Let's hope that one of your greater concerns is that you don't know how to spell "grammar". There's a "check spelling" button, click it before you post.
