- bickdigg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+50all your bags are belong to us
- dattaway, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25What do you mean lost? Its on ebay like everyone else's luggage.
- rwallen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21My wife and I went to London last year and BA lost one of our bags. It had Insulin and some durable medical equipment and they searched for it all night and got it to us in about 6 hours. They actually sent a man with the luggage on a plane to get it to us.
- onionizer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14I just found this statistics:

quite scary, uh? - stronglikedan, on 10/11/2007, -9/+18"sensitive information" = carry on. Anyone with half a brain has already figured this out. Expensive lesson but no sympathy points. Hope you learned something.
- Ninnux, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@onionizer
Please give the reference for those statistics.... I'm interested. - pixysticksatan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7This is one of the reasons I always just take a single backpack when I fly anywhere, regardless of the airline. Carry-on is really the only safe way.
- nowayhoseb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8same for me just last week. short flight and all my suits are gone
2 days later they turn up soaking wet and stinky....thanks BA, I mean "B.O." - nowayhoseb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8thats a bit unfair...there are "sensistive" things in this world bigger than a carry on, such as a medical device, a cpap, etc. . Don't be so quick to judge,
Also, Heathrow ONLY allows ONE bag, and that includes your laptop, so you are screwed if you cant put your "sensitive" stuff in that.
No sympathy points for you either. Hope you learned something, tardo - noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Don't worry, it's not as common as people like to make out. Remember, people who have a normal experience don't advertise as loudly as the few that have somethng go wrong.
- nowayhoseb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5i think though, if you pay 1000 for a ticket they should get your stuff there. .... i dont need to line the pockets of fedex just cause BA cant get their ***** together. Its like saying well, thats what cabs are for when your mercedes breaks...there is a level of expectation that cars arent gonna break, your wife wont cheat on you, your boss wont fire you tomorrow, and that the airline will not lose your *****....your logic makes no sense
- acoolhead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Hehe, you obviously have no idea of the amount of kit we have to take to cover a show.
Why do you think we checked SEVEN bags, because we WANT to lug a massive amount of crap around out in the 28 degree heat and 100% humidity of Taipei? No, it's all the stuff we have to take to do the job we're sent to do.
This means, given the current carry-on restrictions, that compromises have to be made. My carry-on baggage was a load of broadcast quality digital video cameras worth around £12,500... either they went in the hold or the other, less monetarily valuable stuff did.
You do the math. - wishnuv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5BA is the worst ever. My wife's bags were delayed two times when travelling to India from the US. My bag didn't arrive with me when I was travelling for my wedding this January, and the bags arrived 8 days later, 2 days before my wedding. And the Customer Service guys at the airport simply refused to answer the telephones, because there were so many people calling in.
But they atleast paid us some money to refund us for the clothes we had to buy when the bags were delayed.
If you fly BA, make sure you dont have bad connections....If you have less than 1hr connection time, your bag will not arrive with you 100% of the time! - dpchi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I took a trip from Phoenix to Madrid on BA and they lost my bag, took them 7 days to find it and I was only there for 9.
- enola, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3While I know that, generally, it is the fault of the airline for losing luggage...
Does anyone consider the human factor? I hear stories all the time about someone picking up the wrong luggage. Maybe that happened, and that person realized the mistake and went to correct it, but it's just taking awhile. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@noahhoward Its true there are signs everywhere, you probably just got lucky or were at a terminal where they haven;t enforced it yet. I flew through T4 on Tuesday and they made me put my laptop in my bag to get it through security - just told me to take it out when I got through, the staff at the gate didn't mind me having 2 bags. Bloody pantomime!
- rudy23, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5hasn't this been happenning since ever. why isn't it sudenly newsworthy?
- datastorageguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4pff that's nothing. I flew into India from Boston on Lufthansa and when I arrived in Mumbai guess what...my bags were missing. So here I am, in India, with no clothes, no contact lense case or solution, etc. Just my laptop and the clothes on my back.
I eventually got them back after hours of waiting in that smelly airport. Man I will never forget that smell for as long as I live. - wickedsun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Heathrow's carry on policy for connecting flight is 1 bag. There's no way anyone could have avoided it. If I recall correctly, if you have to hit Terminal 4, you have to put everything in one bag, it's a law in England that says that carry-on items have to fit in ONE bag. This is for security purposes, after the security check, you're free to take everything out of your bag. But there's a law that forces you to have only 1 carry-on bag thru security.
And yeah, if you have a laptop, you better hope it fits in the other bag you have, else you have to check one of them. Every time I went there, everything could fit in 1 bag, I was lucky, but I don't know what I would have done if I had to check the bag with my ipod/camera/etc. A laptop counts as a carry-on "bag", which is ridiculous. - libertao, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3True, but on my last flight with BA I was asked to wait an extra 5 hours (read: listen to my ipod and/or read Harry Potter 6) in exchange for >$600 and an upgrade to business class (free champagne, no one sharing arm rests, almost completely lying down, comfy seats). Hell I'll take that any day!
http://msnbcmedia4.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/070109/070109_firstClassFlight_hmed_11a.hmedium.jpg - TheCount, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Have you flown BA lately? They have all sorts of restrictions on carry on now, especially if your starting point is London (one carry on bag only, including a laptop case), if you're going anywhere for any length of time, it's virtually impossible to just carry stuff on.
- wrc_michael, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3BAstards lost my bags on a flight from LA to Oslo. No compensation and took a week before I got them back. Now I fly Air New Zealand whenever possible.
- nowayhoseb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3we used to call Air France - "Air Chance" cause you never knew if they were on strike that week and would never get your bags.
- moofer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+34 weeks ago my wife's bad had been rifled through by the TSA at LAX, and they stole our Canon digital camera out of her suitcase. It was full of pictures of her friend's college graduation, and we'll never get them back. The crime was reported to the police there, but no one really cared. It's almost to the point now, where if this guy wanted to get his press materials back safely, he should have FedEx'd them. It's sad though... that you have to go through those kinds of efforts.
- dakboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Don't ever pack something your life depends upon in checked baggage.
- Radionesiac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2iPhone story in disguise?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"I need time to grow a beard and change my name to Mohammed Al'Jihad.
I'll then check in dressed in a combat jacket and have a copy of the Koran tucked under one arm.
In theory, that should mean my luggage will be kept a very close eye on and may even result in me seeing it again at the other end. Though, truth is, I'd still not place a bet on that. "
Thats awsome - TheCount, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The operate word is "time-sensitive", we're not talking about top secret documents revealing the true identities of CIA agents here.
- kivi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Air Canada may be in a tie with BA for worst airline ever. I'm currently at 4 trips in a row with Air Canada that they've lost my luggage.
Luckily everything eventually made it's way back home. Though I'd be tempted to purchase some sort of GPS tracking system. - jeremynicolas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2EasyJet have lost my luggage twice. Once on the way to from London to Prague for a weekend trip, and I didn't get it back until 3 months after I'd returned; that was a dirty, messy weekend. The terror scares meant my hand luggage was reduced to passport & wallet only. EasyJet eventually sent it to another woman, on the same flight, who also had lost her bag -- even though my address was all over it. Luckily this kind woman worked as a courier and was kind enough to deliver it personally the next day. Oh: and insurance had already paid for everything missing. I had 2 ipods, 2 phones, 2 cameras...
P.S. Ryanair lose less luggage because they don't do any connecting flights. - Wormfather, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Ohhhh crap, I'm flying them next week and if my fiancee's bags gets lost it's going to be a horrible vacation.
- Dynamosa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3carry on luggage > check luggage
Next time don't check time sensitive materials... - davewho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Reading this article where the author decided to use a new line for each thought makes me think of that kid Stevie from Malcolm in the Middle.
- aschapm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2ba once lost a suitcase of mine. they apologized by way of offering me $50 (actually wound up giving me $67) for new clothes while i was waiting for them to deliver my suitcase, which they did, and less than 24 hours after i arrived, too. they also upgraded me to business class (fold-out seats to go completely flat) on a roundtrip transatlantic flight, for free.
i really like ba. - TechCF, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Or behind a pet store:
http://www.topix.net/us/fbi/2006/12/061226I6PEMP - queenstarsha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that's cool. is it a hassle to carry on medical stuff like insulin and needles?
- colonels1020, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1My bag got lost on a Continental flight just a few days ago. They had the bag back to me in 2 days. I'm glad that I wasn't flying British Airways...
- allywilson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Is there a watchdog for airlines? Think I'd be contacting them...oh, and providing that guy Richard's name and contact details. Complain, go anti-British and cause hell.
- WarBicycle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1My wife and I spent Xmas in Copenhagen, BA lost our luggage on our return flight. What really angered me was that they knew our luggage was missing during the flight, but said nothing. I spent 45 minutes waiting and looking for my luggage followed another hour waiting my turn to report my missing luggage. Had they informed us that our luggage was missing during the flight, we could have filled out the necessary forms on route to Toronto and simply got into our car immediately to take the 90-minute drive home. I will never fly BA again.
- Nutmegan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I, for one, welcome our new cliché overlords.
- lacr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I can't remember which airline I flew that lost my luggage but it was either Delta Song or JetBlue. Anyway, I was going for 10 days to visit my family, so I needed my clothing! I'm not about to go clothes shopping because my luggage never came...you know? So I finally found out that my luggage had been put on the next flight, and that wouldn't be in for another 3-4 hours. I asked them if they could send someone to drop it off, since I didn't live too far and I didn't think I should have to come and get my ***** if they were the ones who made the mistake. They told me that I would have to pay $50.00 to have someone bring it to me, or they could UPS it and it would take a few days.
We went and got my luggage. But screw them. - jlbraun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I would submit that I lost a bag with United once, and it totally disappeared from the system, as in it was never even checked in.
After three days, they found it. Turns out that my brown duffel looked almost exactly like the United airmail bags, and was thrown in the bin with them!
Given that this guys' description of his bag is a blue duffel, that may be what happened. - qwertydvorak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1it's called Fed-Ex Overnight delivery, or UPS Early AM delivery, smart people have been sending important stuff that way to avoid airline foolery.
- sshuit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I would wager that most of the "missing" baggage is stuff that is stolen.
Dont' check things which are valuable (duh!) and don't have super-nice high end luggage.
Anything which is really valuable should be in your carry on or mailed separately with insurance and tracking. - dakboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Shouldn't be, especially if you have copies of your prescriptions and they're all properly in your name.
My father (diabetic for over 30 years) hasn't ever had trouble flying that I recall, getting into public events (ballgames, etc.) or anything else, carrying his insulin, needles & glucose meter (which uses lancets (needles)) on his person or in carry-on baggage. - sublime, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I picked up my wife from the airport last night. At this very moment her bags are lost.
- NavS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Who gives a *****? Next time don't take ***** so important with you in a way that is prone to get lost... His loss, I couldn't care less about his crying.
- queenstarsha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i think people in the civilized world assume all bags are scanned and tracked. my boyfriend's luggage was delayed on a united flight in the u.s. (kind of our fault for getting on the plane two minutes before takeoff) and a guy from the airline drove our bags from denver to boulder as soon as they arrived at about midnight. now that's customer service!
so you can imagine my dismay when my bag on an aviacsa flight to southern mexico didn't turn up (this time totally not my fault), and the gal at the desk said they'd try calling the airport where our flight had stopped over *the next morning* (when we were supposed to leave the city). she told me to stay by the phone in my crummy hotel until they called. they never did call -- i called them the next evening, when we should have already seen the mayan ruins at palenque. they'd found my bag where our flight had stopped over, but they hadn't bothered to put it on a plane and get it to me. they wanted me to stay by the phone in my crummy hotel until they called to tell me it was on its way.
i decided to get what i needed at wal*mart, where i would normally never, ever shop, but it was the only thing open in this ugly city we were stuck in that reeked of burned plastic. the next morning, as we prepared to leave stink city, aviacsa called. we had to take a $40 round trip taxi ride to the airport to pick up the bag ourselves. the bag had been ripped to shreds by luggage handlers, but i wasn't missing anything (besides three entire days of my vacation, $40 for the taxi, the $100 i spent at wal*mart, and an intact backpack).
i've completely stopped checking luggage on international flights since then. if it doesn't fit in two carry-ons, it ain't comin'.
lost luggage is extremely frustrating, but i suspect this guy will get his stuff back... eventually. at least british air is run by people who speak english. i decided not to bother filing a claim for the money and time i lost because my spanish isn't good enough to navigate aviacsa's bureaucracy any more without completely losing my sanity. - wickedsun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Out of 4 flights in the last 3 months, none were on time with BA. All of them delayed. Never had any problems with Lufthansa, however. So far, in my book, they're the best.
Oh and BA will not allow you to have a handbag around your shoulder if you're in the emergency exit row. The flight attendant took my bag away from me (containing my iPod).. which I had to say something like "Trust me, it won't get in the way.. if there's any emergency exit, I'll be the second out, with my bag.", but they still took it away :( No music for me. - danserv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah, because you can fit a suitcase of stuff into carry on. I congratulate you for reading the story properly.
