- hiphoc, on 10/10/2007, -13/+96Its good to see this is getting out. Police used to do this in secret. The fact that cops are now openly abusing people in public on video is not a good sign. ***** is getting real bad. They must feel really emboldened. I mean, Bush has set the precedent for breaking law and not being punished so he goes further, the same is now for the police. ***** is getting really really bad folks.
- anesthesia, on 10/10/2007, -7/+83I consider myself a pacifist..
but there's something about this story which just makes me feel very angry and aggressive. Sickening. - izzybr, on 10/10/2007, -3/+46As bad as all this tasering BS is, what is worse is when cops and DAs hide evidence to put innocent people in jail. How many stories have you seen where someone gets out of jail after 10 or 20 years because exonerating evidence was withheld or the cops lied during the trial. It's all part of the same problem and we need to have harsher penalties for the people who are sworn to uphold the law, but blatantly disregard it while doing so
- sacul555, on 10/10/2007, -6/+44I hope those officers are punished extensively although, i doubt that will happen. I wish for once someone in power would do some good instead of promoting fear and torture. What happened to the idea that cops should protect and serve the public not beat and scare.
- whymanwhy, on 10/10/2007, -14/+46Don't tase her bro!
- Tarantulus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23FTA: "At the jail, Norman reportedly was hitting her head on the floor before a deputy used a Taser on her twice, the sheriff said."
Good skills, to stop her from hurting herself, give her a couple of electric shocks to the stomach, that'll work... - Tabou, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21If her account is truthful, and the tape (still suspiciously withheld by the police department) will prove/disprove that, and if she is indeed crazy, the smart thing to do would've been to transfer her to a mental institution where doctors and experts will know what to do. You don't confine her to a cell and have 6 or more idiots, with nothing better to do, treat her worse than an animal. As cited in the article, "if people hog-tied a dog and then took a cattle prod to that dog ... they would be federally prosecuted."
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24The people defending the actions of the officers by saying "there are two sides to every story", and then saying people aren't reading the whole article, are completely missing the point. If you do read the whole article, you will see that there is a video, her account of what happened is documented and true, so she didn't fabricate any of it. If it was, you can bet your ass they would have released a statement saying so. The officers involved have been suspended, and the article says three other officers present have resigned. Two sides to every story my ass.
Now that that's out of the way, we can move on to the fact that they didn't just tase her to get her under control. No, no, they "handcuffed, leg shackled, hog-tied, blindfolded, taped a towel around her head with duct tape, then tasered her multiple times". That's not keeping a situation under contol folks, that is torture, plain and simple. - onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18The video, when recieved, will tell the tale.
- scuvball, on 10/10/2007, -18/+36Please read the whole article, there are two sides to every story.
As I don't know the entire truth of the matter, I think it's important not to make hasty conclusions. Supposedly she was banging her own head against the ground, spitting at officers and being combative. While none of these are a good excuse for what she claims to have happened to her, it is entirely possible that she has fabricated her claims. The incident should be looked into and dealt with from there. On top of that, 6 officers were punished already and further action is being considered.
I'm basically repeating what's in the article, but I doubt most Diggers will read down that far. - Napoleone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Now watch as the booking video is "misplaced".
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17As a man who has spent some time in jail. This doesn't surprise me at all. The worst i saw was when they waited for a fight to end before having six guys jump on and restrain both of them, and just hold them down and mace them. Not like once or twice either. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
- nblsavage, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16I'm sorry, she was bound to a chair and blindfolded. What the ***** was she going to do? Levitate the friggin chair?
- Tabou, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15The police department itself saw the tape and suspended the officers, so you know it's bad. But like you said, hopefully, truth will come out.
- flygirl62, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13And it still amazes me that many people are okay with the idea of the government having control of all the weapons in the US (i.e. in favor of more gun control). These are the only people who will have them if we keep going in that direction. *sigh*
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13The Abu Ghraib training system in action in the good ol' USA.
- acr2001, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Officers were punished already? They got PAID LEAVE AKA VACATION. They were not punished, they were rewarded. Also, how do you know the police didn't fabricate their own claims? I highly doubt they came back to the hospital looking for her upon her release because they wanted to help her. If they wanted to help her they would not have taunted her and tased her multiple times, even if she was trying to hurt herself, they would have tied her up for her safety, called an ambulance immediately and sent her to a mental hospital where hopefully she could get some real help - this is assuming she actually was trying to hurt herself / the officers which may also be a load of crap.
- EricSchC1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Maybe your dad is the exception.
- skinturtle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Too many young guys on power trips and attitudes coming from single parent homes and abusive, alcoholic/drug addicted fathers joining the police force.
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Like the prosecuter in the Duke Lacrosse rape case. He PURPOSEFULLY withhold evidence from the defense that PROVED they were innocent. He was trying to put those guys in jail for life. And what does he get... 24 hours in a private cell in a minimum security facility. 24 hours... that's it.
There is no justice in this country anymore. - 28dayslater, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14The best thing you can do for yourself if you happen to live in a police state is move, while you still can.
- MalumProhibitum, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10If the cops did this, they need to be hogtied and thrown into genpop at a max sec prison.
- fixedcoma, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Man if that's all i have to do to get paid leave then i'm gonna go tase some people a few times, therefore i can go home and sit on my ass and get paid , baby!! wahooooooooo!
- iTorrey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10The fact that you are ok with police officers administering justice shows just how bad we have become as a society. It is not the job of police to be the judge, jury and punishment enforcers. They are there to protect and serve. Just because you don't agree with the kid doesn't mean he deserved to get abused by the police. They could have done a lot better job defusing that situation and instead chose to let their personal anger and emotions get the better of them.
- goffy59, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8All cops should have cameras and wiretaps in their cars and these records should have public access to all. Even cameras on themselves/wiretaps! Don't wiretap the people, let the people wiretap the government. Makes more sense.
- Rapter09, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9See, this is the problem. People are thinking Tasers are solve-all non-lethal guns.
The thing is... these things are supposed to be handled like weapons, and only used when the officer is presented with danger, but not enough to justify putting a bullet into somebody. A woman being "combative" and spitting, even to the extreme, does not in any way constitute the use of a taser.
Quit apologizing for them. - jessehadden, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Every single day there is a story of grievous, inexcusable, inhuman police brutality. Virtually none of these cases result in anything more than a paid vacation for the pigs in question. What the hell is going on?? If I was walking down the street after midnight, and saw a shadowy figure on one side and a pig on the other, I'd choose the side of the street with the shadowy figure -- with him, there's at least a chance that I'll walk by un-harassed.
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I didn't know cops read digg. Welcome.
- MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7My friend's father is a corrections officer in a nearby state prison. I deer hunt with him and his officer friends, and they are the most sadistic and unfeeling SOBs I have ever met. They joke about prisoners getting beat up and raped. I understand that they're probably desensitized to a lot of stuff, but when you get to the point where you laugh at needless human suffering, you should get out of the corrections business. Obviously, this is anecdotal ... but if they are an exception they certainly aren't representing their brethren very well.
- pinguwin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I did a ride-along once and I was impressed at how professional and tolerant the cop was. He told someone to get their unlicensed motorcycle registered within three days and all would be fine, etc. He could have given tickets but didn't. He said that if he gave everyone tickets, no one would want to help him when he needed witnesses or help. He had a belligerent drunk who wouldn't cooperate with a state-required blood test. He did threaten to taser him when two jail workers were fighting with the drunk, threaten but not use. The drunk was not cooperative at all but he kept his cool in a way I don't know if I could have. He was a very good cop.
On the other hand, 20 years ago I was pushed around by the cops in a very, very clear abuse of power designed to humiliate me. What chance would a college student stand in filing a complaint against two cops late at night when we were all alone? "The suspect became disorderly and....."
I know that most cops aren't bad and the good cop described above, when told of this incident said that would be a lot less likely today with the prevalence of cameras, better trained police, etc. But in the past it did happen to me.
I'm torn between seeing abuses and seeing the good cop. There have been good cops trying to help me when I was having trouble with people hassling me when I was minding my own business and I've had a cop tell me they filed a report with a problem dog (I'm a cyclist) only to have the report never filed and the cop lie to me about it (the officer's supervisor wasn't impressed by her behavior when I complained, so at least someone acted like they cared). So I'm not sure what to think but I have to say, I will never forget 20 years ago, it still colors my opinion of authority figures. - TheKillDoctor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I have a couple of friends who became "police officers" and after 15 years on the force they are now officially "pigs". Uncaring pieces of *****.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9They should be given the very same sentence they unjustly forced upon the innocent person on top of monetary restitution paid by the city AND those involved with the miscarriage of justice. Maybe then crap like this would happen less often.
- Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Hey look... that cop didn't beat up that innocent old lady.... amazing!! Must Digg!
- 16x9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7She's just lucky she wasn't completely out of control or the police officers would have had to blow her ***** head off to keep her from hurting herself.
- Myonosken, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7If she is getting angry and is in jail....get out and let her stew in the room alone for a few hours like normal policing?
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Their job is to serve and protect citizens, to uphold the law. Their job does not include using excessive force just because it is convenient. Their job is not to shock a schizophrenic, 56-year-old woman ten times with a taser just because it is "non-lethal". Their job is not to torture inmates to keep them under control. Their job is not to beat up protesters. Their job is not to pull people over with no reason and then literally say they will fabricate claims to throw them in jail because they are on a power trip.
Yes, just because many cops are corrupt or incompetent doesn't mean they all are. Just because there are good cops does not mean we should not point out the bad ones. It doesn't mean we should not be outraged when people's rights are being violated. I am sick and tired of people like you who will come up with any excuse they can to just ignore these issues. Just because our government is doing it, just because it's been going on behind our backs all these years, does not mean we should ignore it and do nothing. - positron, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Don't worry, that's a natural reaction for a sane person. It would have happened sooner, you just weren't paying attention.
- zephc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8You're foaming at the mouth again... you might want to clean that.
- cwinkler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah, and don't call the cops to come help you, as usually someone will get hurt. Avoid them at all costs.
- hockey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Don't forget the leg shackles, handcuffs, hog tying and the neck in the back of her head!
- faraazs, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12What is happening to our country?
- diggduggjoe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It seems that they forgot to rape her for good measure.
I am sure the blue wall of silence is slowing the case, too. I feel any cop who covers up for another's crime should be liable for DOUBLE the time of the actual crime. Police abusing their power or refusing to intervene when another cop commits a crime is not acceptable. - jugger74, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Why don't you give me your address because you sound like a crazy person I'll come over and save your life the same way for awhile. Your retards who keep making excuses for these animals make me sick and I'm sure you're the same punk bitches that would scream bloody murder if they were stepping on your neck.
- DogHumpsMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It's standard procedure in most departments to suspend the officers while the investigation is ongoing. That doesn't mean necessarily mean they were found guilty of any wrong doing. This doesn't provide enough information to make any kind of informed judgment.
- TheKillDoctor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I grew up with two guys that fit that description, and yes they became cops.
- njaguar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Whenever a police officer is involved in something like this, whether they are guilty or innocent, they are almost always suspended until it can be investigated. The suspensions does not mean they are guilty.
- jugger74, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Good to see the head of the police union stopped in to see us. It must be hard to type and beat an eighty year old woman at the same time. Guess that's why he just keeps typing same thing over and over again.
- ummagummas08, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I thought this was some kind of satire on the whole incident at first. This *****'s crazy.
- heystoopid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Ah the old ends justify the means and the means justify the ends excuse , perhaps you are willing to give a live demonstration for Bill O'Reilly to refresh his clouded mind ?
