Felony for doing it=Over the top - smotpoker, on 01/12/2009, -14/+59*Felony* harassment, wtf? It's not like he was stalking or did it multiple times. It might even fall under free speech - even if it was a dick thing to do.
A felony charge is harsh for playing a recording that just says "praise god" in another language, IMO. If it said 'kill jews' or he was chasing people around or something I could understand a felony but not this - fuckingusername, on 01/12/2009, -3/+33video would have been so funny to see the expressions on their faces.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+27That, tasteless as it may have been, should not warrant a felony charge.
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -13/+39Stephen Buttafuoco - How can you hire a guy with a name like that to work at your wedding and then act surprised when he does something truly offensive?
- Claverhouse, on 01/13/2009, -1/+21Slightly bad taste; but in what weird world can one be charged by the police for playing a - semi - offensive recording ? People should toughen up.
- omgwtflawl, on 01/13/2009, -1/+18Or maybe we could remove all felony charges for words, and save them for actions. The facility where this happened should handle this themselves, there should be no government involvement at all.
- diemunkiesdie, on 01/13/2009, -1/+16Islam believes that the God of Jews, Christians, and Muslims are all the same god. Islam is thought of as "Religion 3.0" with Judaism being "1.0" and Christianity being "2.0". In any case, the literal translation of Allah is "god". It's not a special name, that's just the Arabic word for god.
- Wrangler76, on 01/13/2009, -2/+16This happened in New York though. If a muslim did this in Israel, I'm sure he'd be dead and labelled a terrorist the next day.
- sealbeater, on 01/13/2009, -2/+15So much for Freedom of Speech. They charge you with something other than what the true crime was, saying something that offended someone else. Even if done on purpose and not by accident, he should be safe from being charged for this, at least on a first time. It's not like he sneaked in and did it, he was working there, it could have been a mistake. I still think it's a crime that he is facing a FELONY for offending someone.
- LowHz, on 01/13/2009, -0/+12I think the Muslim Allah and Jewish Yahweh are the same deity.
- OrangeTide, on 01/13/2009, -1/+12If a Jew was in the middle of Mecca he would have been arrested long before he could say anything.
- oboshoe, on 01/13/2009, -0/+11Its a prosecutors negotiating tactic.
Start with the highest charge and then let the accused lawyer work their way down.
Not really moral, but commonly used. - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -10/+20Because someone's name does not imply anything whatsoever about their behavior?
- vitaminz1990, on 01/13/2009, -1/+11Fox News article on front page?
- mrcaulfield, on 01/12/2009, -6/+16would've won the darwin award had one of the wedding attendees killed him.
- PopcornDave, on 01/13/2009, -2/+12But you have to understand that in this day in age you can't offend *anybody* else you're going to face some kind of harassment charges.
Even though what he did was stupid, especially as a DJ - how do you not know what you're playing is going to be heard over the loud speakers, people need to grow up and learn to not be so god damned offended and just shake the stupid ***** off. - OrangeTide, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9I think if someone does that at a wedding you should be allowed to throw them out of the place. Problem solved, everyone can move on.
- elbm, on 01/13/2009, -2/+11If it had been the other way around. There would be one f-ed up jew at the wedding and the next day embassies in places I have never heard of would be attacked.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -3/+11I am going to sue the government for felony harassment when they come stomping down my door because i refuse to pay for the bailout.
- oboshoe, on 01/13/2009, -5/+13I wonder what would happen if a Jewish guy started shouting a Jewish prayer at an Arabic wedding in Mecca?
I bet it would be far worse than a felony. - sealbeater, on 01/13/2009, -1/+9Not everyone is afraid of what they don't understand. I'm sure Arabic lullaby's are beautiful to an Arab child, and sounds nothing like plans to enslave the world. Try to see through other's eyes.
- BdaBeerman, on 01/13/2009, -1/+8Can I sue that new church down the road for felony harassment for ringing their damn bells at 9:00 am EVERY Sunday morning?
- MacEnvy, on 01/13/2009, -2/+9"A 19 year-old person from Tallahasse, FL (US) who joined Digg on January 13th, 2009"
ORLY - zapass, on 01/13/2009, -3/+10yeah WTF!?
what about free speech? - DavidButtafuoco, on 01/13/2009, -3/+10I like to think I'm not so bad.
- xero69, on 01/13/2009, -3/+8I can has first amendment?
- AmazingSteve, on 01/13/2009, -0/+5What do mean? Like Carney folk smell like cabbage?
- keraneuology, on 01/13/2009, -2/+7Killed. Not arrested. Killed. Dead.
- theDarkGamer, on 01/13/2009, -2/+6A more appropriate response would be not giving the restaurant your business. Whoever is trying to charge this guy with a felony is a major schmuck.
- smokesteam, on 01/13/2009, -0/+4he wasnt the DJ, he was a waiter
- oboshoe, on 01/13/2009, -1/+5Probably.
Frankly I think everyone needs to get over it. - smokesteam, on 01/13/2009, -0/+4Very incomplete coverage of the event. See NY Newsday for better coverage here:
http://www.newsday.com/news/local/ny-liwait0110,0, ...
Also regarding the felony charge, might be covered by one of these:
- New York Code Section 240.21: Disruption, or disturbance of religious service. A person is guilty of aggravated disorderly conduct, who makes unreasonable noise or disturbance while at a lawfully assembled religious service or within one hundred feet thereof, with intent to cause annoyance or alarm or recklessly creating a risk thereof.
- New York Code Section 240.30: Aggravated harassment in the second degree. A person is guilty of aggravated harassment in the second degree when, with intent to harass, annoy, threaten or alarm another person, he or she, etc. etc.,
IANAL and I got this information elsewhere. - smotpoker, on 01/13/2009, -0/+4@deduction
"Cup your hands around your mouth, loudly exclaiming "BOMB! There is a bomb under my chair!""
Considering the article said it was chanted, I don't think that really qualifies as shouting. Further, there was no threat of anything specifically indicated.
"Oh, and @smotpoker, you do realize that "praise god" is what terrorists yell right before they push the red button wired to their vest of explosives, right?"
It is also what millions of people say for any number of reasons millions of times throughout the day *every* day. The miniscule number who happen do something violent afterwards should not make it illegal for the overwhelming majority
"Repeat the above steps and yell "Allah akhbar" in a movie theater, this time in Jerusalem or Tel-Aviv or [insert Israeli city]."
This isn't Israel or any other country. Citing other countries' injustices doesn't make them justifiable here. We are supposedly so patriotic because the freedoms and justice we enjoy here are so much superior to those other countries. The idea they should be allowed to be taken because of a few fanatics and fear-mongerers is disgusting - smokesteam, on 01/13/2009, -0/+4Only Muslims are allowed in Mecca to begin with
- Claverhouse, on 01/13/2009, -0/+4I agree absolutely. The only thing charging him will establish is that in future muslims, fundamentalist christians, etc. ( and other religious ) will be able to claim the same rights not to be offended and ultimately claim that any freedoms other religions' exercise infringes upon their rights not to be offended.
- kds405, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3Yeah. It's not Christ-like! It's like...Christ!
- OrangeTide, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3It's not as bad sounding as German or Scots Gaelic.
I like the African languages where you have to click your tongue, those sound cool. - alexbox, on 01/13/2009, -1/+4"Police said the defendant is not related to Joey Buttafuoco, whose 17-year-old lover Amy Fisher shot his wife in the face more than a decade ago."
Because if he was he would absolutely be guilty? - wmtrader, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3 How do you accidentally hook your audio player up to a sound system or unkowing have the speaker on your audio player close enough to the PA system's microphone while the mic is open?
This guy knew what he was doing and he thought he was being funny.
Then again legal action for being a douche bag is a bit much. - inactive, on 01/13/2009, -2/+5In other news, insulated jackets and coats have reached record sales in Hell. Could this be proof Global Warming is a hoax? Stay tuned...
- MoClippa, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3As an Arabic speaker I actually enjoy the English language, however I feel some of its dialects and colloquial usages border on atrocious. The same is true for Arabic, depending on the speaker it can either sound poetic and emancipating, or as you put it, 'guttural'. It isn't a problem with the language itself, which when spoken correctly in its classical form flows smoothly, but when the classical form devolves into day to day street use (which many politicians use out of necessity in an age of mass media). An Arabic speaker I particularly enjoy listening to in his usage of language was Gamal Abdel Nasser, though he was ultimately a fascist his charisma and usage of language won peoples hearts as much as his symbolism... here are a few selections, and bare in mind though it may sound poetic he is talking about politics and the various wars he had been involved in... the language when used correctly flows quite naturally as this...
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AfX0MhOx0bo - oboshoe, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3Agreed. I like the clicking and popping noises in some African tribal languages.
Probably in terms of shock value, some sort of 1940's German hymm would probably have been a worse choice at a Jewish wedding. - DiggCrusher, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3Felony Harassment? Can we get those charges levied at Fred Phelps and family?
- OrangeTide, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3then why is it a felony? in a normal universe the person would have simply been ejected from the private location.
- CaptainNoPants, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3Somone always brings up Darwin awards? Guess I haven't been paying attention
- jimmyjohnston, on 01/13/2009, -1/+3I guess if my neighbors were always shooting at my home then my neighbors would be facing the same atrocities because I wouldn't stand for it and let them keep bombing my family. Facts are facts, there was a cease fire, it expired, the Palestinians started bombing Israel again. Israel had enough, which is a lot more than us Americans ever would have stood up for and they went to stop it once and for all.
As a simple American who is rather tired of this old news with both of your religious zealousness bringing out the worst in both religions, if you both can't get along then will one of you please wipe the other clean off this Earth and then there will be no more problems. If that idea seems a bit radical then stop bombing Israel and they won't need to blow you up into oblivion.
Just my two cents. - sgtbutterscotch, on 01/13/2009, -1/+3I guess it's just so overused it seems like it's used way too often, much like Pedobear and Admiral Ackbar.
- IKORKYI, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2felony harassment or not, that was a pretty stupid thing to do. shows how childish this fued can get.
- mandarin, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2Tacky time to play a recording
