- habermanm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+165They are simply repeating the Spanish warning in English so that English speakers aren't thinking, "WTF is this warning that I can't read."

if you cannot read English...
... you shouldn't be licensed to drive
... you shouldn't be voting

- krayzee911, on 10/10/2007, -1/+78When I was in college and worked in the dining hall, we had products similar to that. I always wondered why the "ESPANOL:" section of the warning sheet was so much shorter than the English. When I actually read the Spanish, it kind of made me laugh. Worse yet, ours said "...have your manager read and explain it to you.", which assumes that the manager can read English and speak Spanish.
- Raider007, on 10/10/2007, -6/+83the warning is in spanish as well (right before the english warning)...
not seeing what the problem is, except for the fact that the person making a big deal about it doesn't read spanish and doesn't get it...
which is kinda ironic... - markperia, on 10/10/2007, -5/+60Not all immigrants that can't read English came here illegaly. Ive got a korean friend that had a hard time with english for a while when she came over.
- Jonjonr6, on 10/10/2007, -6/+59Its there because the manufacturer ZEP makes commercial use cleaning supplies, and knows that the majority of the people using the product around Atlanta (where ZEP is located and prominantly used) are Mexicans, many of whom do not speak English.
Atleast they didn't assume you'd be a Mexican and make the label all Spanish. - someant1114, on 10/10/2007, -9/+57The ability to read street signs, and understand what the candidates are saying seems important to me to
- orgazmo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+34The english bit is just there to explain to English readers that do not understand Spanish what the Spanish line was all about
I fail to locate the funneah - TAGline, on 10/10/2007, -10/+41There is a difference between immigration and conquest/replacement. The former implies integration into the existing culture, the latter implies replacement of that culture.
Not that I really think everyone should be forced to learn English, I'm just sick of people comparing European conquest of America to immigration. - picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33but they're not licensed- they just drive anyway
- sunshinex, on 10/10/2007, -16/+45Only in America, the land of lawsuits.
- uknowwhoibe, on 10/10/2007, -9/+37I don't know anything about programming in C++ so Google should hire me and teach me all of it. No, I didn't learn it before applying so it's their job to teach it to me.
I'm sorry, but if you don't take it upon your self to learn the language of the country you are moving to - it's your responsibility - not theirs. - Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -7/+34It's arrogant to go to another country and demand that those people learn your language to communicate with you. If you go somewhere that does not speak your language, the burden is on you to learn that language.
- DiggzDE, on 10/10/2007, -8/+33Not funny at all. At least they took the precaution to cover their asses for the non-english speaking users. Whoever photographed and posted this on the internet is a complete idiot. I don't even speak Spanish very well (last took a class way back in high school) and I could translate it good enough to see that the English part just repeated what the Spanish part said. Fail.
- DiggzDE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Exactly. I thought this was going to be funny. Instead, this is just plain retarded.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+26Well, it says it in Spanish first.
- Danikar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20The on the job training usually consists of something else other than the syntax of a language you should already know.
- daybreaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Yeah. If I had a product, and saw a bit in Spanish, with no translation, I would definitely wonder what it said.
They're only translating it so non-Spanish speaking people know what the warning says. I dont get why this is front page material. - weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -7/+24Your right. One is illegal immigration and might be economically harmful, the other is inhumane genocide that systematically destroyed a nation of people for the profit and pleasure of the invaders.
Don't pretend that the Europeans arrived here and declared war and then fairly battled for the land. They arrived under the guise of peace, friendship and sharing. Then they slowly amassed an insurmountable army and then used that army to crush the welcoming inhabitant. They told them that the way they were living their lives was wrong, and forced them to convert to Christianity. The ones that didn't were considered savages, and equated with animals that could be killed with out warrant. The ones that did convert were still treated like second class citizens. Just look at the Cherokee people. They liked the settlers lifestyle and cloths and culture. They assimilated as fast as they could. They were still packed up into caravan and driven out of Georgia by force.
And so a country formed fifty years earlier on the premise "...that all men are created equal, and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among these the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.." brutally closed the curtain on a culture that had done no wrong. - janformanek, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19WARNING: If you can“t read spanish dont make an ass of yourself by stating it undeliberately on digg.com, one of the most visited pages on the web.
- acarr, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24So if you are visiting Italy, France, India, and don't speak the language, then you should not be able to rent a car and drive it there?
- plizard, on 10/10/2007, -21/+35they are illegal immigrants for a reason. english only please! thank you
- NekoAmplifier, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16What has happened to Digg?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19Traffic court in my area (northern virginia) is ridiculous. Every other person needs a translator and they never understand what they're there for.
- Indierocka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12rofl i looked up the UPC on google and found this http://www.upcdatabase.com/item.asp?upc=6908580382 ...
- daybreaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11they may not have the label space to translate everything, so at least they put something on there for spanish-only speakers
- TAGline, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13@ weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzll
Your comment is totally irrelevant to my point. The morality of conquest doesn't change the fact that it is an entirely different process from immigration with entirely different goals. In fact, it just emphasizes my point that European conquerors simply didn't care about Indian culture and certainly didn't want to be a part of it, and so on the land they seized of course they would not adopt the native languages. They were REPLACING not INTEGRATING.
Immigrants, on the other hand, DO want to be part of the existing culture (the workplace is inextricably tied to culture) and thus may take an interest in learning the language of that culture -- Just as an American classics major might learn ancient greek and latin to read and understand classics and culture even though neither language is used today (outside the Vatican anyway). - legion, on 10/10/2007, -8/+19I dont know if youve noticed genius but all street signs that give traffic directions use symbols or numbers. Only construction and parking signs use words.
- saifatlast, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Yes, because the US constitution has NEVER been translated into another language.
- Rikushix, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15"Proudly American made!"
Go figure. - nitrojunky24, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13you can't vote without being a US citizen and no green card doesn't count. so you need to know English to become a citizen anyway so its not really an issue.
- scalebane, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Actually, the United States does not have an official language at the federal level, although several states do. That said, English is obviously the de facto standard.
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Then you'd be *****.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I'll pack up my bags now then...
- nyx210, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10What if I can only read in Russian?
- Alucard010, on 10/10/2007, -13/+21This is America, learn to speak English or don't complain. I don't go to Mexico and bitch about how everything is labeled in Spanish.
- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9No its localized to alternate languages in many regions.
- gglynn07, on 10/10/2007, -11/+18How would they know the rights afforded to them under the Constitution if they can't read the ***** thing? It is in English as well.
- PathDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7What is official is of little consequence to me. When I visit a foreign country, what embarrasses me above anything is getting in a pickle and having to ask a local a question in English and hope that they understand.
You don't get to pay in your own currency and don't get to drive on the side of the road you're used to. I realize that language is a bit worse of an issue, but the same principles apply: tourists are forgiven. Once you move in, it's your responsibility to accustom yourself to local life. - gajillion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Ron Paul
- lightinggod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7so i guess that deaf mute people shouldn't vote or drive.
- CMiYC, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7How is this bad?
Someone with a brain decided putting an English and Spanish version of the warning on the label was a good idea.
It is obviously a product that is put into a majority-english speaking market. So the rest of the label and directions are in English.
I wouldn't be surprised if they had a reversed warning on a label going to a majority-spanish speaking market. - LogicBomB, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6In Canada the two official languages are English and French. We have gigantic pie slices of every race on the planet up here but that doesn't mean every label will have spanish, chinese, japanese, korean, etc...
Ehy would you expect countries to cater to everyone? It would tie everything up. My 10oz can of soup would be the size of a watercooler with every language on it explaining the ingrediants. If I have allergies, I better learn the language quickly. - BGFeltenink, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8No... if you can't drive in that country for an extended time what makes it ok to drive in it when you're visiting temporarily? You still can't read the signs. Oh, right, because roads and signs were designed with the knowledge that some people won't know the language but WILL know the shape/color and meaning. As long as they know that stop signs mean stop and green lights mean go then it really doesn't matter if they know the language or not. Otherwise you very well should support countries like France, India, and Japan (I mean, their signs aren't even in a post-Latin script!) having a ban on non-speakers renting cars.
- richerrrds, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11Ah but remember the good old days when people got on-the-job training?
- JorgeGT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Err... here in Spain we include English translations (not just warnings) in the labels, because, you know, you anglophone people don't use the Spanish language as much as we use English...
- Raider007, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8well if the product is in America, there isn't really a "problem", at least they give a heads up in the second most popular language in the country...
- JoCliMe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5If I recall (in California atleast) you don't even need to be able to read in order to take the driving test, you can have it given orally. This isn't for people that can't read/speak english, if you can speak it, but can't read it you can pass.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Uh, say what now? Since this nation's foundation, the functional language of all state and federal governments has been English. The reason it was never codified is because no one thought there was a real need to at the time, unlike now. All people would benefit from speaking a single language in this country and English has been the de facto method of communication for over 230 years. Why not learn it?
