- Mootabolife, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2You should go to orhodox church.. we have a bar under ours.
- cliffzdude, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Who hasn't kneeled and prayed at the porcelain alter after too much of the holy sacrament.
- sk11, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Now they just need to replace the clergy with large breasted strippers.
- dotlizard, on 04/25/2008, -3/+16i didn't think there was anything that would make me want to go to church ever again. but i never thought that there might be beer there. this changes everything.
- wonderchemist, on 04/25/2008, -1/+22I'd like to dedicate this toast to Jesus.
- idavidtang, on 04/25/2008, -0/+0Amen.
- InspectorGadget, on 04/25/2008, -3/+3If you're labeled a "punter" (prostitute's john), chances are you drink BEER.
- Myonosken, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Er the word just refers to a drinking customer in Britain. I was surprised to see it in reference to a church-goer though.
- ZephyrNinety, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5...the gin and the juice of Christ, amen...
- Ighuc, on 04/25/2008, -8/+24At least the children won't remember who touched them now.
- waydee, on 04/25/2008, -5/+2Wrong religion.
- SharkyTech, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2It's always annoyed me that churches get away with supplying alcohol to minors. Yes, fine, its not enough to affect anyone (drinking from the same cup as everyone else can't be good for you though), but if wine producers handed out similar sized samples to children someone would complain.
- batshitcrazy, on 04/25/2008, -0/+7they will have to make bigger bathrooms
- onlyclave, on 04/25/2008, -6/+6Beer or not church sucks either way.
- SitPoMk, on 04/25/2008, -2/+7drunken pastor is drunk
- victorycig, on 04/25/2008, -0/+7Wasn't this basically a Monty Python skit, but with brandy instead of wine?
- idavidtang, on 04/25/2008, -6/+0was anyone else reminded of how Jesus turned water into wine?
- buhbyebot, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5no.
- williane, on 04/25/2008, -2/+1^
- TomTruelle, on 04/25/2008, -1/+8id go to church if they served free beer
- buhbyebot, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3I'd have to get pissed before going into that bat ***** nonsense again.
- melonhedd, on 04/25/2008, -0/+0It's not free.
- cookiechips, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3...and if they had Titty Tuesdays.
- waydee, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4Nothing wrong with the idea, he said it would only be sold at a café for concerts etc. at the church - whats wrong with that?
The only reason anyone seemed to have a problem with it was because it might dip into their business. So it's fine to sell alcohol in large bottles from an off-license, with all the social problems and misery that that particular trade encourages but to enjoy a glass of wine during a church concert is wrong? It's not like people are going to be knocking back double vodkas during a vicars service is it - the churchgoers are still the same people with the same ideas of when its acceptable to enjoy a drink or not. - United857, on 04/25/2008, -3/+9Why do people think that alcohol and Christianity don't mix for some reason? I think some of you might be confusing this religion with Islam. There are many references in the Bible to believers drinking wine and spirits and getting (at least somewhat) buzzed during celebrations.
Me and my Christian friends go out drinking (dancing, clubbing) all the time; I think as long as one doesn't get wasted and knows their limits, there's no inherently Biblical conflict with it, anything more than having a good time through other means.- waydee, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Trust me, in Britain we're very familiar with pissed up ministers and churchgoers - it's not an issue. That same woman denouncing the plan probably drinks a fair amount herself, likely to the point of addiction. Same for her husband, at that sort of age people here tend to either live in the pub or at least have a few drams or glasses of brandy each night. Catholics positively encourage getting very drunk, protestants less so but no matter what the official line may be they're all guilty of being addicted to alcohol.
He'll get his license and rightly so, snooty old bag in the off-license and Mr. Pub-owner will just have to get used to a little competition. - siszam, on 04/25/2008, -6/+3If you're drinking and clubbing and think that behavior is alright you might want to reread your Bible. You missed some things.
- DreKor, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3yeah, it's full of crazy things, like:
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
- DreKor, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3yeah, it's full of crazy things, like:
- Myonosken, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1In all fairness, just look at Northern Ireland. Maybe religious people shouldn't drink...

- digitallysick, on 04/25/2008, -1/+12Interesting that jesus turned water into wine, but most church people are against drinking. Last i checked the bible didn't say that he turned wine to water
- silentcollision, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3Fundamentalists are against alcohol. Most mainstream churches aren't.
- twiztidsinz, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5Wouldn't that mean the fundamentalist are 'fundamentally' wrong?
- buhbyebot, on 04/25/2008, -6/+7Jesus didn't turn anything into anything. He was a man. It's a ***** fairy tale, and if they want to be honest about this, pass the mushrooms...
- silentcollision, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3Fundamentalists are against alcohol. Most mainstream churches aren't.
- Exact0, on 04/25/2008, -1/+0I don't know what an "average punter" is. Call me when they start giving out shots of tequila or aged scotch with my body of Jesus.
- moolaismyfriend, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2why not they all drink blood and eat flesh every Sunday anyways...
- funkytommyman, on 04/25/2008, -3/+2“It is written, ‘MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER’; but you are making it a ROBBERS’ DEN.”
religious or not, it's history repeating- Myonosken, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Who cares.
- Ihatenicks, on 04/25/2008, -7/+1Utter hypocracy.. I'm not saying that the religious shouldn't drink, but it shouldn't be made available as a church sponsored activity... not only have most churches berated alcohol use for years, but it opens up the probability the the church will get in to bed with the alcohol cartels.
This is just yet more justification that the church has no particular rules of morality and that they are willing to drop their eccumenical trousers for anything that will bring more bums on seats and in turn more profit for their greedy little coffers.
Organised religion should be abolished, between widescale child molestation and activities, including investment, which are clearly diametrically opposite to their supposed teachings, it is clear that the churches have lost their way.
If one is truely religious and comfortable with those beliefs, then they don't have any need of a man in a dress to tell them what those beliefs should be, especially when that man in a dress works for such a clearly misguided and corrupt organisation.. and most organised religions, with very few exceptions, are clearly corrupt to the bone. - spyd3rweb, on 04/25/2008, -4/+4ridiculous that you have to ask the states permission to give someone a drink.
- Myonosken, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3No you need the state's permission to sell drink. Not to give it.
- misterteenwolf, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1yea i'd like to see the church making more of an effort to bring people back
- rafor, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3I don't know why this is such a big deal. All of the catholic churches here in Clinton County, IL have drink licenses for their chicken and beer dances. I wish I were kidding.
- uriman, on 04/25/2008, -0/+5didn't monasteries all over Europe use to make wine to fill the coffers in the past? how is this different?
- Tikiman49, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3A couple things to point out: Jesus turned water into wine because of social dictates, not because the Bible is trying to promote drinking. As for the vicar applying for a license, if you actually read the article you would realize the reasoning... for functions held at the church, not DURING mass. Though the Catholic church has always encouraged drinking in moderation.
- retawd, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4A few years ago a priest in Atlanta held informal masses at a local tavern on Monday nights. It was standing room only a lot of the time, but the usual BS got in the way and he was forced to stop.
- AzureRise, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3This would bring me, an atheist, to church.
- kawaiirobo, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3Considering that most of the bars are closed on sunday in my small town, I could really get behind a church like this.
- sfacets, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Didn't Jesus whip people's asses out of temple for trying to sell stuff in it? Or doesn't this guy read the bible? I'm not Christian, and even I know the story - sad for Christians that a Vican can't even follow his own beliefs.
- Frostek, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Yegads! The English drink like someone's going to take it away from them!
- ukblacknight, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2It's in Wales actually, but yeah, we [British] do like the odd drink or ten.
- sk11, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1In fact, I'm durnf rigth now. but yu can hardly telll.
- ReeseKaine, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1I knew that Geraldine Granger was up to something. Damn her and her magnificent buxom.
