- muffcakes, on 11/27/2008, -4/+75"Pope Benedict XVI said that the current global financial crisis was proof that the pursuit of money and success is pointless, and that wealth meant nothing."
So send your money to the church! - Ma1achi, on 11/28/2008, -14/+77if people are communicating, then they're learning! and the church can't have that!!!
gotta keep 'em stupid, barefoot & scared. - Dumbledorito, on 11/28/2008, -2/+50Religious institutions are inherently jealous of things people can speak to that actually talk back.
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -2/+49Odin cares not about cell phones... ONLY THAT YOU DIE IN THE GLORY OF BATTLE!
- ProfessorLX, on 11/27/2008, -9/+41also making the list:
anything... anything you do makes you bad and you go to hell.
this just in, the popes a dope. - gfxlonghorn, on 11/27/2008, -5/+36Vatican also warns not having a chance to live in the place where you have access to Christian teachings could lead to eternal damnation.
- eco57, on 11/28/2008, -1/+29...unless of course, God's on the line.
- unhg, on 11/28/2008, -2/+28Will trade soul for Internet.
- ablacksunrise, on 11/27/2008, -3/+28I thought this was an article from The Onion when I saw the headline...
- chaoswings, on 11/28/2008, -4/+26Did anyone even read the article? There is no pushing of an agenda, no religious dogma, just some one telling you to leave the house every once in awhile and don't be a greedy bitch. I don't see what everyone is making a fuss over.
People looked at the headline saw the word "Vatican" and started spewing anti-religious crap without even reading the article. - inactive, on 11/28/2008, -6/+27How can I lose something that doesn't exist?
- shadowmanjack, on 11/28/2008, -1/+21The car I was riding in almost got hit by a lady who was texting while driving today. Emperor Palpatine may have a point.
- ImperialSoren, on 11/28/2008, -2/+20good thing we have these ***** with exclusive knowledge of the supernatural to give us advice!
- JoeF8577, on 11/28/2008, -3/+21bricks will be shat.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/28/2008, -1/+16It's seriously amazing that someone who lives in what amounts to a giant gilded castle filled with gold can say that without cracking up.
- daryldarko, on 11/28/2008, -0/+15This is because there is no 3G coverage in Vatican City.
- SheilaNoya, on 11/28/2008, -4/+16He'll change his mind as soon as someone develops a Confession Booth app for the iPhone.
- nasmatic23, on 11/28/2008, -6/+16BREAKING: Catholic Church is out of touch.
- iatethecake, on 11/28/2008, -2/+12I'd trade in my soul if it cuts around $35 off my cellphone bill for life...
- lewystud, on 11/28/2008, -2/+12silly pope
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -3/+12Maybe he's right.
After spending an afternoon in front of tv or internet I feel drained. - RobotBuddha, on 11/28/2008, -0/+9From overheard conversations, I don't think a lot of phone use is going into exchanging intellectual ideas. It usually seems to boil down to "where * at" and "* be so crazy".
- NomortaL1, on 11/28/2008, -5/+14I don't even know why this is news... first of all the articles says
"The Vatican has warned that our obsession with modern technology, such as the internet and mobile phones, is not leaving people enough time for spiritual pursuits. "
Which is DUH!, any religious person would say this.
But the heading says
"Vatican warns mobile phones are bad for the soul"
Sigh... buried. - inactive, on 11/28/2008, -1/+9win.
- quez, on 11/28/2008, -4/+12Buried for a misleading title.
'"In the age of the cell phone and the internet it is probably more difficult than before to protect silence and to nourish the interior dimension of life,” Father Lombardi told the Vatican television show Octavia Dies.'
He didn't say that cell phones are in themselves threats to the soul. The implication from the quotation seems to me that the problem is when technology interferes with spiritual pursuits, not technology itself. The title seems to me to be some sort of sensationalistic rubbish along the lines of 'Look how old-fashioned the Vatican is. Even MOBILE PHONES are evil! Silly Catholics!' - eternalfuture, on 11/28/2008, -1/+9Meh! In the end, science trumps everything. If the Pope wants us to revert to less-modern technologies, well, let him do that himself. I won't comply.
- gn02256676, on 11/28/2008, -3/+11well I have been using cell phone so I might as well keep using it, the trick is to feel sorry before you die so you are forgiven
- Dauntless1, on 11/28/2008, -0/+7They don't want the peasants to be able to co-ordinate the revolution.
- nowhereelse, on 11/28/2008, -0/+7The Church was also largely responsible for the Dark Ages, the loss of knowledge accrued by the classical cultures and the persecution of scholars who dared to defy the Church's doctrine. It really depends who is/was running the Church at the time.
- ZombieJezus, on 11/28/2008, -0/+7Blame the title. It was inappropriately labeled. Honestly I wouldn't say it even merits a "news" article. Growing up Christian (albeit, protestant), this is not anything new. I myself have heard this whole song and dance before but apparently somebody thought it was such a amazing idea... "Vatican Suggest Behaving as Jesus Said" would be a more appropriate title.
Buried for bad title and simply stupid article to boot - ansatsu29, on 11/28/2008, -0/+7He has a point there. Too much of a good thing is not good.
But I still find it funny for the Vatican to argue that mobile phones are bad for the soul. - Hangly, on 11/28/2008, -2/+9He's kind of got a point.
- DigitalisAkujin, on 11/28/2008, -0/+7Can someone please explain to me why I should care what the pope says?
- eternalfuture, on 11/28/2008, -1/+8Maybe he's wrong. Maybe you're just picking the wrong channel or browsing the wrong sites.
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -1/+7“In the age of the cell phone and the internet it is probably more difficult than before to protect silence and to nourish the interior dimension of life,” Father Lombardi told the Vatican television show Octavia Dies. “It is difficult but necessary.”
“There is an interior and spiritual dimension of life that must be guarded and nourished. If it is not, it can become barren to the point of drying up and, indeed, dying,” he added.
“Today, this is a very grave threat, and it is the most irreparable misfortune.”
Sounds like a plea towards spirituality. Why all the hate? - NGYoshi, on 11/28/2008, -0/+6I have an iPhone, I already lost my soul.
- houndeyex, on 11/28/2008, -0/+6I always get his voice-mail. Then he never calls back.
- TrellSaracen, on 11/28/2008, -1/+7Wait...people are still listening to those old clowns?
- WarWraith, on 11/28/2008, -0/+6Because it's Digg.
- chrisinsocalif, on 11/28/2008, -5/+11Vatican told me "Cell phones are bad, little boys good!"
I dont listen to them anymore. - rdwinder, on 11/28/2008, -0/+6Doesnt Pope Benedict XVI's face show signs of a tough and thuggish life? He looks evil...
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -3/+9The Vatican should argue that Catholic priests are bad for little boys' rectums. They need those donations to settle with the victims.
- Techx4, on 11/28/2008, -1/+6Soul?! SOUL!?!? are you ***** kidding me, we are all just meat and bone, a large collection of cells, just like every other animal on the planet.. when you die, your cells break down and die too.. that's about the jist of it.. people are just ridiculously egotistical to think we are so freaking special that we have souls.. morons
- bg2500, on 11/28/2008, -0/+5Sometimes I like to turn the computer, cell phone, TV... etc off and just chill the ***** out for minute without the constant information overload. It feels good sometimes.
Being an atheist, I don't buy into the popes flavor of spirituality, but on some level I understand what he is trying to say. - chrisduser, on 11/28/2008, -1/+6It will be a soulocaust.
Or maybe that is 4chan. - Gareth321, on 11/28/2008, -0/+5I lol'd
- tehbored, on 11/28/2008, -1/+5Thank you for you extremely valuable insight. You are an inspiration to us all.
- MaximusIGN, on 11/28/2008, -0/+4"The Vatican has long counselled against the excesses of modern life. Last month, Pope Benedict XVI said that the current global financial crisis was proof that the pursuit of money and success is pointless, and that wealth meant nothing. "
He says in his expensive gold trimmed designer clothes, riding in his custom built Mercedes Popemobile, riding to one of the many mansions, in his own F*CKING country, to sit back and gaze upon his billions of dollars and priceless works of art guarded by his own army..
