- rhabd0mancer, on 10/10/2007, -23/+89Looks like the 2000 and 2004 electoral maps.
The only thing republicans have been successful at is convincing poor people to vote for uber-wealthy corporatists. - roystgnr, on 10/10/2007, -3/+53It's so sad. I never realized just how many people in this country can't even afford a functional web server.
- qwerty1024, on 10/10/2007, -14/+56Oh so that's where the expression "Red states" comes from
- swiftekho, on 10/10/2007, -5/+46Uber-wealthy corporatists... Sounds like all politicians
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -11/+48The sad part is that poverty is defined by the U.S Government at the "poverty line", which I think is about $20,000 for a four family household (One person is $9,800). That is barely enough money to scrape by for two people. Let alone 4. It is truly terrible how all the money that should be going to stop this is instead going to this ***** war and every other country except ours.
- DiscoLando, on 10/10/2007, -3/+36I agree with your anti-war sentiment, but just handing that money to the poor doesn't solve poverty.
- miriclaire, on 10/10/2007, -5/+36Digg needs a MAP SECTION!
- Leomarth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28According to the US Census Bureau poverty has gone from 18.9% of the population in 1952 to 9.2% in 2005.

Not as big, but still readable. - ajskhan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22you DEMAND IT?
http://1337image.com/images/256.gif - wittyname, on 10/10/2007, -11/+31The census is taken via mail. What about the homeless?
- iticu, on 10/10/2007, -5/+24Spending money on educating the poor, however ..
- jellomizer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Or the reverse the Democrats have done a piss poor job convincing the poor people to elect them... It less about race and religion but more about the democrats lately have seemed like stuck up academics who don't understand what happens in the real world... It is not that the republicans are different GWB grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth... But he did a better job of making that portion of the voting population seem him as the common man president. Which got the votes...
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17How dare you controvert my gut feelings? Statistics are only legitimate when they reinforce my opinions!
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1712 people live in South Dakota. Steve got laid off from his job at the ranch and it threw off the whole map.
- iheartcrack, on 10/10/2007, -20/+36Here's the deal that Republicans sell to poor white people:
"O.k. we're going to massively profit off the back of your labor and you will get very little for it. BUT, in return, we'll make sure the '*****, *****, spics, and jews' won't take what little you do have. Now drop and give me twenty!"
Until poor white people realize they are being sold a bunch of B.S. and actually have more in common with other minorities (sic), they will continue to be taken advantage of by sleezy politicians who have always sold our differences better that our common humanity. - wendelgee2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19"(sic)" means that you are deliberately making a spelling error, usually because you are directly quoting a source. It's not "caution quotes" but dugg up anyway.
- donkeydrop, on 10/10/2007, -7/+21The definition of poverty in the US is meaningless. Half of the people in "poverty" own their own homes, 3/4 have cars, 97% have TVs (most 2 or more), 60% have cable or satelite. The average "poor" person in the US has more living space than at least half of the population of Paris or London. The average poor child today grows up to be taller and heavier than the majority of Americans did just a generation ago.
Try telling some kid in Africa that that is poverty. - halligan00, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I'd like to see one normalized vs. land area. While this map shows the geographic likelihood of individual poverty, it does not show the concentration of poverty. I'm willing to bet that, though the east coast megopolis is relatively low poverty %-wise, there are more people living in poverty there than there are in the southwest poverty areas, with large counties having extremely low population densities.
- brianbennett, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1720k may be hard to live on, but remember the definition of poverty in the United States equates to the upper middle class in many other countries. The impoverished in our country have electricity, microwaves and basic cable.
- dondara, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13It's the old saying about giving a man a fish vs. teaching him to fish. Solving poverty is a huge challenge that would take a few generation to solve. The welfare thing doesn't work. If you just give stuff to people it never has the value of something earned. You need to teach pride, responsibility and self-respect. And almost everything in our culture undermines that way of thinking. The first thing is how to handle money, a lot of rich people are rich because they are good with their money. But the media is all about "buy this ***** today so you can be happy, pretty and popular." Somehow people think that some object could make them happy and that is were this has all gone wrong.
Turn your mind away from things which are not permanent. - Buddha - clark24, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Caves? Really?
Damn, we should of had the Census Bureau searching for Osama this whole time!! - phogasmic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I think Schroderr has a good point. As bad as it is here, it is no where near as bad as the Congo, Chennai, India, or any other third world country. If you picked a person from one of these thord world countries and gave them half of the opportunities availiable in America they would be millionaries. I'll admit that our government is a corrupt, but as a people we are a little lazy and unappreciative too.
- ohLook, on 10/10/2007, -15/+25Yeah, lets just hand out money to everyone so even less people feel like working.
- halligan00, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11It's called poverty for a reason. Most needs-based government aid starts at 2x poverty level, so a family of 4 with income of $35,000 can recieve aid of some sort.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9This map, even though it's not specific (do we have to guess at the populations?), doesn't really tell much. Yes a lot of the "poverty" is concentrated in the south/southwest part of the country, but these areas usually have a lower cost of living there. $20,000 in Kentucky gives you a home and in NY it gives you a 300 sq ft apartment. Not to mention this doesn't take into account the Amish, Indian reservations, retired people, etc.
- diggface5000, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Is it just me or does it seem like the darkest red colors are around the mexican border? Also, I'd be interested to see a more recent map to see how Hurricane Katrina effected the Louisiana/Mississippi area. It's already extremely poor in 2000.
- Sparkster185, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Welfare is a vicious cycle. It leads to nothing but poverty for all,
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Please define poverty.
- wendelgee2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9cuz reading is hard.
- gmason08, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9That is not correct. You may want to research how such data is actually gathered. If not and specific to your erroneous understanding; major and costly efforts are made to personally seek out people in non-conventional dwelling situations. People on benches and under bridges are fairly easy to locate but the efforts go far beyond that, searching in woods, caves, etc.

- cheddarlump, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Ya, because giving a bunch of money to poor lazy people makes everything better.
- dondara, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Have you ever been down south? It IS a third world country down there. I agree that there is more opportunity here but don't think it's all white people living in the suburbs with SUV's. There are some desperately poor people living in the states.
- onTheJDAR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Please elaborate, Moof. I don't mean to sound like a dick, because I could be wrong, but what exactly is it that would compare to a third world country? Is there running water into most homes? Is clean water even available from another source? Are people drinking out of a river while watching dead dogs float past them? Are there ANY jobs that pay over $2/hr? If so, what are the safety considerations? I know the U.S. medical plan isn't perfect, but what are the infant mortality rate in the rural South? How many people die yearly due to malaria, diphtheria, or AIDS?
I may be totally over the line here (please tell me) because I don't know exactly what it is like where you are. However, if the poor people there are like the poor people I knew in the South, then they have a trailer, a TV, an A/C probably, and a whole lot more than the masses in a third world country. Yes, they need help, don't get me wrong, but the conditions are not like a third world country. - whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The US census has volunteers that go door-to-door and even under bridges to speak with the homeless. So you're wrong.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Thanks for proving my point.
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Our "poor" make $20,000 a year. Nobody starves in America who wouldn't in a socialist country. You almost have to work at it.
- Adamande, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's called "divide and rule" and it's a pretty common and well known political strategy. Just pay attention next time a politician mentions "an enemy" or " a threat". You probably don't have to wait very long for that...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divide_and_rule - Bioshocker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"lighten up."? He seems perfectly light-hearted. It seems to be you who is being a miserable git by taking genuine offence at having your grammar corrected. "try being creative and take license every once in a while"? As in "hey, you should try using words completely incorrectly sometime, no one will have a ***** clue what you are talking about, it's fun"? The pride is high with this one. Just admit you used the word wrong, or keep quiet. No one cares.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Thats just all the poor people holding up little signs for the aerial photo. Its the only work they could get.
- oblivinated, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I'm going to be dugg down for this, but I myself did a cross comparison of the GSP of blue and red states, and the difference is a merely couple million dollars. Despite behemoth California shadowing all the other states in GSP, red giants like Texas and Florida (yes, surprisingly...) help close the gap.
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Still, our poor are easily upper-middle class on a global scale. Go to the "ghetto" and you'll see cars, refridgerators, hot water, and televisions for almost every home.
- diggless, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5if a picture is == to 1000 words then I think you will see that an image is interchangeable with text. The difference being that the image can convey its 1000 words worth of data in a few seconds, it takes a few minutes to read the same amount of text.
perhaps the question has been malformed, perhaps you meant to ask: Why is it that at least every other story on digg is forcing me to intake information so efficiently? - Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Well, Florida has that massive tourist industry and Texas has oil...no surprise they're heavy weights.
- Kyrgizion, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9I wonder how it'd look if you took this map and put it on top of a "religion" map... I bet I could draw a few parallels.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+15Care to back this up with factual information?
Of course not. - LittleDas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Because there are so many more people in New York or California, that is to be expected and why we're looking at a map of percentages.
