/ but you did didnt you... - EatingPie, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2I surf at Tabletops reef where the attack occurred.
I have seen some extremely foolish statements regarding this shark attack. From "sharks are misunderstood" (when, in general, 99% of the attacks are unprovoked and a complete surprise), to this one above. "If you're afraid of the ocean you shouldn't be in it"? I almost drowned at a break next to Tabletops. That scared the hell out of me. I've surfed 20' faces by myself (not my smartest move) and had to build up the courage to drop in... I still surf though, and love it almost every time I go out.
My point is that you SHOULD have a healthy fear -- a *respect* -- of the ocean. It can be a very dangerous place. It's always the surfers and swimmers that don't HAVE such "fear" of the ocean that get themselves in trouble when the waves are huge.
This guy is just being an idiot, and shooting his mouth off about it. The 72 hour moratorium is to give time for the shark to get out of the area. There's no guarantee that will work, but it's *smart* and one of those things born of *respect* for the ocean.
