- Exbzurq, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Oddly enough this reminds me of the GTA San Andreas PC manual where they went in depth about the city and hotels etc.
A GTA Baghdad would actually be kinda epic. - Viend, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3No.
- makkaveli19, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3was the Sheraton there before the war? or did they just take advantage of the situation
- louiebaur, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4Nice I will grab my camera and book a flight and go check it out
- roosevans, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4So when Bush invades and occupies Iraq he takes over the decadent opulence of Saddam Hussein! Some irony, huh!
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Yeah, I'll stay there. Right after I smash my nuts with a hammer. I'd rather visit the front line, with a bottle of jager and a sniper rifle.
- MacParrot, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2IF it's the same Sheraton Hotel that existed when I went there in the 80s (along the Tigris River), it has quite a history for a building that hasn't been there for long. Examples include:
In the 80s, all the rooms on the river side of the hotel were not allowed to be occupied after Saddam built a palace on the other side. Apparently (as rumor had it), he was afraid that snipers could have a good shot from some of the rooms. Coming from someone who would routinely use body doubles for public appearances I guess this isn't too far-fetched.
The pool was a favorite spot for many of the foreign dignitaries and the hotel actually charged a membership fee for access to it and some of the other amenities that it offered.
There was a very popular nightclub located inside that many of the foreign guest workers (including quite a few contracted Irish nurses for Baghdad hospitals...YUM!) would frequent. I went there with some of the US Marine security guards and they would badger the DJ until he would play "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen which never failed to clear all the locals off the dance floor.
The rooms themselves were nice (though I could never afford to stay there myself) but had a very interesting addition on certain floors. There would be a door between two different rooms and in the two rooms adjacent, all the mirrors would be located on walls next to this mystery space. I never had it confirmed, but the thought was that the mirrors were two-way and that security forces within the Iraqi govt would monitor foreigners who stayed there. - inactive, on 04/09/2008, -2/+4You could have someone set up roadside bombs for you to drive by at home instead.
For a little extra they might even yell Allhu Ackbar at your flaming vehicle afterwards. - inactive, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1this isn't political
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Yikes, incredibly bad taste to treat this subject as cartoonish.
The blood and guts are VERY REAL........ - madcaps1980, on 04/09/2008, -0/+0Will they let you drive tanks or shoot .50 caliber machine guns when you get there?
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -1/+1International Republican Institute wow now that's more scary than a roadside bomb!
- milobennett, on 04/09/2008, -2/+0Wired used to be a pretty good magazine until they decided to push their political agenda instead of doing what the subscribers pay them to do - cover tech stuff. If I want politics I will listen to Air America or read the NY Times.
