- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20The one with the dragon eating the sand castle builder was my favorite. Both in difficulty and creativity.

who the hell got first place? - autovertical, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8This guy got first place. You can see the sign in the background, but not sure if it really is for it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v442/iftk/16/31_sand_100700.jpg - tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7The sand is wet.
- addiggt, on 07/06/2009, -0/+7No idea but I hope it was this one http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v442/iftk/16/23_sand_86794.jpg
- mdjohnson1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5These are much better than the top 10 aluminum foil structures.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4With the scale some of these were built on (one actually had sand steps a human could use) - you'd need way more than one bucket.
- skankyBacon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dude. WTF.
- atomicartist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I would love to know the process, how do they stay together so well? My pail and shovel never to me that far when I played in the sand.
- EnP24, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4that one is amazing. I feel like I could live in that one.
- jd33, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Careful, one of these is NSFW. Check out the Amazing Arthur one about a quarter of the way down.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You're right about the compressed sand. In my day as a competitive sand artist...OK, I never was one but I was on a backpacking trip a number of years ago through a canyon. We followed the river through the canyon, so we spent a lot of time in sand. Some of the sand in the riverbanks was packed so hard that it was about the consistency of cool cheddar cheese. We spent time carving it into chairs to sit on as well as other random designs for fun. It wasn't as hard as sandstone but it was plenty dense. Anyway, so you are completely correct about compressed sand being quite stable for sculpting.
- pnoyprd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3and I thought my pail shaped sand castle was awesome...
- catalysis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It has to be some particular type sand. It looks like these are all competition photos.
- scuvball, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hmm. We might have to rethink some of our physics, because under current understanding some of those are impossible to do with sand!
- DrGFreeman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Dugg for HOLY *****-ness
- grakker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Here's the deal with these sand sculptures. Wet, yeah a little. Particular sand, kind of. What they do is set up forms and pack the sand with a pneumatic thumper (I don't think that is the correct term). So, they pile up the sand in forms, then pack it to hell. So when they sculpt, it stays. I don't really think this is cheating, but it's not something you are going to do on a trip to the beach. I just admire the artistic ability.
- fabDisaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2there was a guy in venice, who sculpted naked women, he claimed he made ***** better than jesus.... just a fyi
- noisician, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2are they allowed to add anything to the sand?
i could imagine there would be chemicals you could mix in or spray on that would make it easier
but maybe that is considered cheating?
anybody know? - darkamster07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that one looks like hogwarts :O
- pmagayon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I like yogurt.
- iStunT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Dugg for the reference to a previous story about cheap flip-flops.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Damien Hirst cuts a dead cow in half and preserves it in formaldehyde, internationally renowned artist, whose pieces are worth millions. These sand sculptures are awesome! True art.
- stouffer67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I would pay the artists to let me jump on one of these.
- scojerroc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you mean "amazin' walter"?
- amfbjuan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sandy.
- shanaya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That place, Harrison Hot Springs is about an hour away from where I live. Haven't been out there lately but the sand is known for the best sculptures around. Myself, I don't have the time but appreciate the art totally!
- titansfan4life, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that cool i wish i could do that
- Alegoo92, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2holy *****!

- it5five, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1the one that looks like cloth is exceptionally good.
- h0msar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Here's a question you might want to ponder: What happens when it rains?
- timmyallen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i believe its actually Melbourne :)

- mstachiw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1so i'm guessing grand prize when to Scary Chinese Flip Flop?
- vade79, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wow, I've never seen such great ones before, not even close...However, did anyone else notice the hidden penis coming out of the skulls mouth in the 2nd pic? Now that's what I call an easter egg
- AK10, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Anyone else notice the sand-woman's bare ass in the last picture?
This is at the Haunted Mansion in Disney? Must be Euro Disney. - ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I check //STATiC too, but I have found they are 100% ripoffs of other sites, without any story or credit given. E.g, the "Walmart flipflops give chemical burns" story from digg a couple days ago ended up on STATiC without any reference to the original site.

- crushfan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the information.
- scojerroc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1so the ***** themselves were better than jesus, or he did a better job than jesus of making *****?
either way, it does not sound very impressive. - DarKnight90, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It was.
- DarKnight90, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But that was all part of Digg's plan.
- VeryBoredNow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2If you find sand so ABSOLUTHELELEYY! AMAZING why don't you go to Iraq
