- AriaStar, on 10/10/2007, -5/+29I had a BMW and got a small hole in the tire, just needed a plug. I called and got a rate for a plug, was told an amount I found reasonable. Got down there and had it plugged and was given a bill for almost double. When I asked how the price went up, that I was told X on the phone, the guy told me it was because they didn't know the model car over the phone, and I told him the work is the same. He was candid and told me that, straight up, people charge more for certain cars for the same, or even easier, work, because they presume that those with luxury cars can afford to pay more. (He did drop the cost though.)
So it's not like certain cars break more, just that mechanics will get away with charging more if they think you've got it, and what are you going to do when everywhere you go is charging a higher cost for the same thing? - MusicalGenius, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20Thanks to Firefox and my lack of something to do, I have it for you...

- onimusha115, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10They might as well name this "10 cars you will never afford, so don't worry about it". I would go broke just putting gas in and doing maintenance on these things.
- Sparkster185, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Yuppie.
- tunafizzle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7This is a very poorly written article. Where are the Ferrari's/McLarens/etc that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy and insane amounts of money for insurance, fuel, repairs, etc?
Also, the deprecation value's make no sense at all. According to Forbes, a Mercedes Benz S-Class Sedan's MSRP is $85,750 and the deprecation after five years is $82,368. This means that if you bought it today August 3rd 2007 and sold it August 3rd 2012, you would only get $3,382. That means it's only worth 4% (FOUR ***** PERCENT!) of it's original value! By comparision, let's say you bought a VW Jetta for $23,000 in 2002 and put 50,000 miles on it and it's in normal condition. That means you would only get a paltry $920 for it. If I can get a five year old Benz for just over $3,000 show me the dealer now and take my credit card.
And $352 a month for car insurance for a luxury sedan? That must be some pretty serious coverage. - xike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8What about aircraft carriers? I bet those cost a *****-ton.
- zestyhedgehog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8I don't get it: lets take the S-class - starting MSRP is $85,750 and depreciation in 5 years in their table is $82,368. Does it mean that the 5 years old S-class will cost $3382? That's ridiculous, I've never heard of such depreciation rate. They must have pulled it out of their ass.
- halavais, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There's a spot I wouldn't patronize again. Yes, mechanics are more likely to screw you than not. This is just one example of many. But it doesn't make it right or acceptable. There are plenty of really good mechanics out there who will treat you fairly, no matter what you are driving, and they deserve your business.
- dhbanes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Forbes isn't marketed to defeatists.
- DrStrabismus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't see Space Shuttle.
- speezer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's a rare car. It is going to appreciate and you could sell it for a profit.
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So they made the stunning conclusion that expensive cars are expensive to own.
- wewa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have 2 late model VWs (New Beetle & Passat). While they may not be the MOST expensive cars to own, they are the most frustrating and unreliable.
They are the anti-Toyota. While the features are cool and the style nice, they are not very reliable in so many ways. They are like the iPod of cars.
Looks cool, but the most vital features, battery life and sound quality, are sub-standard. No wonder people make sites like vwsucks dot com.
A few years ago, JD Power reliability study ranked VW 2nd to the bottom in reliability, with only Hummer being dead last. Lexus and Toyota was at the top. - ChrisRX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I'm sure the most expensive vehicle you could own would be a spaceship or a jet or ferry.
- AriaStar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4525i. Unless you have an M6, you have no right to call any other BMW blah.
- superal1394, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3appreciate is an understatement.
- Thex1138, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wouldn't a Veyron be expensive to maintain as well?...let-alone buy..
http://jalopnik.com/photogallery/BugattiVeyronPegaso/2299316 - jas168, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"BMW M6...MSRP of $104,900; and the Audi A3, with a $25,340 MSRP... But the M6 Convertible’s cost of ownership after five years is $150,565, less than 1.5 times the car’s base price; whereas the A3’s five year total cost of ownership of $51,513 is more than two times the vehicle’s base price. // The lesson: If you sink more than $100,000 into a car, each of those dollars stretches farther over time"
So one costs $50,000 more over five years and the other costs $25,000 more? Therefore, more expensive = more expensive? I appreciate the thoughtfulness of the article, obviously the rates are different, but it's not offering that much practical knowledge. Just pick up the Consumer Reports and research the depreciation and how well cars hold up, and you'll know what you get for your dollar. - morcheeba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I found out that a decent helicopter costs $150,000 to overhaul the turbine engine... and you've got to do that every 3000 hours! Right there, that's a cost of $50/hour. There's lots of other things that need maintenance, and they drink fuel, but they do things no other vehicle can do.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Surprisingly...none of my cars are on the list. o_0
- AriaStar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well, yeah. Now I'm a Yuppie in a Sebring convertible. Costs less to maintain.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cars become especially expensive to own when the dealer tries to make you authorize work that is not YET needed, such as replacement brake pads, rotor surfacing, fluid replacements (transmission, differential), tune-ups, spark plugs, tires the list goes on. Make sure to read your car's manual and only do the maintenance that is required according the manufacturer's schedule, which is applicable 99% of the time.
Especially when it comes to luxury cars, they try to charge you for maintenance every 15,000 miles which can cost several hundred to a thousand dollars a visit. Most of the items on those maintenance lists are unnecessary and a huge rip-off. - omgitsfletch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Did you even read the article? Not the absolute most costly straight from the dealership, but rather which one is going to cost more as a percentage of original cost over time. The Veyron and other supercars may be $1M+ but you aren't going to pay 100% of the price over the next 5 years with those cars, but you will with these cars.
- egrumling, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think they were using California or New York insurance rate cards.
A few years ago, Iooked at buying a used Porsche (yea, yea, I know). They are actually quite cheap to buy, a 7-10 y.o. model can be under $10,000. However, you need to spend at least a grand a year on the things to keep them running well, and it isn't a good idea to take them to the shadtree mechanic for repairs. - AriaStar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I didn't go back there, not after that.
- celeb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Not sure how much you had spent, but your neighborhood auto parts store does carry tire repair kits for less than 10 dollars. It's a very easy job and practically idiot proof.
- Beerduck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Vehicles are non-living means of transport. They are most often man-made (e.g. bicycles, cars, motorcycles, trains, ships, and aircraft)" --Wikipedia
I'd say owning a luxury cruise liner or your private jet might be a bit more expensive :) - Harbinger67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2If you can't spell Koenigsegg, you don't deserve to have a say in any serious car-related discussion.
- muller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you look at the Top 10 Luxury Vehicle Value-Holders on the same site, some of the same vehicles are listed.
0_o - aloser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah show me where I can find a 5 year old S-class and I'll snap it up in a second.
- greenmountain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1*****
- Synchro, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3What is even more sad is that a tire plug kit at your local auto parts store is less than $5 and putting a plug in is easy easy. There is a chain out in the western US, Les Schwab that will do a plug for free. I just inherited a 1993 Mercedes Benz 300D and I am scared to know what the upkeep on that thing is gonna be.
- JoeLeo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Didn't we say no more links to Forbes crappy Web side?
- aloser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I looked it up; looks like they run for about 15k or so: http://www.cars.com/go/search/search_results.jsp?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=22&sort=true&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=ascending&sortfield=PRICE%2CPRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7CE-%7CM-_31_%7CH-%7CD-_289-1_%7CN-N%7CR-10000%7CI-1%7CP-PRICE+descending%7CQ-descending%7CY-_2000-2001-2002-2003_%7CX-popular%7CZ-50325&sortId=&aff=national
Still not too bad of a price though. - MusicalGenius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I dugg you up as you sink lower for one reason alone... I don't think it's a dumb list... but yes, I have seen more expensive cars out there.
- lucifuge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've got an 85 944 (yes, 944s are real Porsches - if you haven't driven one, don't comment). It would be absurdly expensive to keep on the road if I didn't do my own work. Since I do, it's a pretty cheap car all in all - and a whole lot of fun. Beats driving my pickup that only get 12 MPG and is a total slug.
- anarchyx34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Exactly. You've gotta pay to play. Wanna be a baller? Then pay like a baller.
- goat2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what a load of *****, i have a 2000 SL1 and ive only put in 800$ not including regular maintenance like oil changes, new tires, etc.
- tunafizzle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1lol, thats right. They are marketed to snob *****'s like you that got rich from daddy's money.
- slimshady, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I'm tired of all of these ***** top 10 list they are ***** annoying.
- xnviews, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I'd like to see a list of the 10 vehicles with the least TCO as a percentage of their of base value. THAT would be a worthwhile list.
- mbradbury, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Wheres the planes and ships
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I've owned two BMWs (E30 and E46) and it seems like BMW as much as I love them never seem to fix the easy things that every car should do fine every time. I had warped engine heads, electrical, suspension, transmission, brakes, you name it; I've had it in the shop for it. I then got rid of both in favour of a Honda and Acura and have never looked back since. I still want another E30 but it would be a simple track car
- TridenTBoy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Buried as inaccurate. I can think of more than ten cars that are much more expensive than these to buy and to maintain.
- p51d007, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1you think anyone that owns one of these "I have a small penis" cars knows anything about how to do anything more than
put gas in the car? Hell, I've seen some of them that don't even know how to walk and chew gum at the same time. - ronia, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0go ask CarTalk. That's 1-888-CARTALK.
- okmon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Depreciation isn't a cost, it's a negative benefit.
- poulsimpson, on 12/22/2008, -0/+0When you're looking for the best possible used or new car loan, there are a vast amount of places to look - and a multitude of places to find a good rate with low interest rate that are possible to pay on time. A lot of people are finding best used car loans at low rates daily from http://www.carloansmadesimple.com - And it's a great alternative
