- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+64Number 1 - Libraries?
(p.s. I know this article is about books online) - SP0000TZ, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18This list is missing "the library"
- GerryBot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Fantastic list - you can't beat free books!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+21Translation: Bush wouldn't be our president if more people weren't dumb-*****.
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, if your teacher happened to be a robot.
- pap3rw8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7#bookz on undernet IRC is where I get my ebooks. more books than those at which you can shake a stick.
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -2/+7Don't be put off by plain text books. Just copy and paste them into a word processor and change the font to Garamond, Georgia, or another nice font *with serifs*. Adjust the margins so you don't have too many characters per line (60-80 is good for reading), and voilà, a very readable book.
Personally I still prefer to spend a couple bucks on a "used" copy on Amazon so I can have a real hard copy with no typos to hold. - LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3/r/ House of Leaves!
- Wonkanobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The best price for anything? Free 99.
- esotericguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5oh good, i thought this was going to be about sites like the Gutenberg Project, just volumes of old sahkespeare/dickens type books. I'm not puting them down, but, c'mon.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bookmooch rocks.
Just LIST 10 books and you get one for free.
I've gotten rid of a few books that I really didn't want and only paid a minimal amount for Media Mail shipping and have got about 5 or 6 excellent books from the service in all. - pagancollective, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5A better question, perhaps, is how can we use these so-called "books" to lose more weight before beach season.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bookmooch ftw! It's great.
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2irc://irc.undernet.org/bookz
pretty much any book you could possibly want. - zeroduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just checked out this website, and it seems very interesting. Thanks for the tip.
I'm just wondering: is the community honest? When someone says they're shipping something, does it usually come promptly? How about more in demand books? - vagarach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even better, print to file and then using ghostscript, convert the .ps file to a pdf. Then you get that nice, smooth, easy to read presentation that pdf has.
- Depthfunction, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here's a nice site for free audiobooks:
http://librivox.org/newcatalog/ - juliocgrajales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great List, and #2 BookMooch is a company I think deserves a great deal of attention
- altrego99, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1Where is it that you *don't* get that?
- leemcd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those if you in the city of Baltimore:
www.bookthing.org
They give away completely free books, no catches. (Well actually a GNU like
catch that you cannot sell the book, and must also give it away for free)
Usually a thrift shop that has connections with a public library will also have nearly
free books, on the order of a dollar per book. I definitely prefer physical books over
e-books. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you click the fifth link, Dwalin, Edwin Abbott's 'Flatland' is right at the top of the list...
That is just awesome, in case anyone here hasn't read it...(but I somehow doubt that.)
I'll have to go back and see if the (more pedantic) sequel, Dionys Burger's 'Sphereland' is there too.
(I guess it is just an alphabetical listing by author.) - farfel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2People should check out the books that are freely available under the creative commons license.
http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Books - FastZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've never read it...nor have I ever heard of it. Then again, I'm illiterate so that probably explains why.
- slib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay, not free, but Half Price Books is a GREAT place to get a copy of almost anything. And their pricing policy for the most part stricktly adheres to their title: half price. This includes books produced in the 50's and 60's. So be prepared to pay 1.00 for some original editions. I mean, I got a copy of SnowCrash for 3.50. And that's for a legitimate words-on-paper book, not the whole "5 megabyte text file that's extremely hard to read" thing, as is the case with Project Gutenberg.
Just, you know, tossin' it out there. Mostly because eBooks make me want to cry blood. - oxigen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using Bookmooch for a while now, it's freaking great!
- Leopards, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's another really good place to get free books, in a number of formats! http://www.baen.com/library/ Though I will admit that you may get hooked on the Authors and series at Baen and end up spending either money on the rest of the series or a lot of time at the library looking for these authors! they have some of the most addictive science fiction and fantasy being published these days!
- Depthfunction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love Half Price Books, but they have no stores in the city where I currently live. :(
- EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great timing for me! I just purchased a Sony Reader. E-Ink is absolutely awesome!
I update a converter (makelrf3) to reflow plain text (absolutely imperative), and add curly-quotes (purely asthetic, but nice).
A lot of people don't read books online because of the LCD refresh rate issue, not to mention laptop vs. paperback size difference. If you're one such person, but still interested in downloadable book content, I highly recommend E-Ink readers.
-PIe - tjlsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since the web site is flooded, can anyone post a mirror please?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Fitness books?
- ladyarcher85, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wow! My book craving is satisfied. lol
And we are saving trees. yeah! - Ordos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Also check out http://www.whatsonmybookshelf.com/ :D
- majortom1981, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1what about your local library? I am a network administrator at one and we have downloadable books, mp3 audio books, and started a new service for downloadable movies.
Your library is also free.
Why hasnt that been mentioned? - sam80fisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0After looking around for free ebooks a lot, I really think the best place is Scribd: http://www.scribd.com. Part of the reason is that users uploaded them, so there are literally thousands of high quality books. Another reason is that the ebooks are very accessible, as you can download them as PDF, Word, or text files, and you can have the option to preview them in your browser using Flash.
- r0ck3t3r, on 03/26/2009, -0/+0I also liked http://www.freebookquest.com. It searches all the book sites so that you don't have to look through each one. Pretty cool
- purpleabottle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3You might also try http://www.scribd.com Since the content is uploaded by users, it gets copyrighted ebooks much like YouTube gets copyrighted videos.
Here are some programming books:
http://www.scribd.com/collection/42 - zoerulz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Books=love No contest :)
- derukio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0check out
http://digg.com/software/eBookSearchr_BETA_best_way_to_find_free_eBook_downloads
as well - popegroupie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bookmooch is nice.
For history students like me, check out méditerranées.net. Very interesting articles from D'Alemberg encyclopedia (concerning ancient history) that can't be found anymore in a regular library - at least in Montreal. - Brandon1324, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Librivox is nice, and there are many other options for free audio books also. Sure, actually reading the books is better, and having a hard copy of the book (instead of an ebook) is even better still, but there are plenty of times when Audiobooks are nice (driving, working, running, etc).
Here is a list of 15 sites that offer free and legal audio books:
http://www.projectsidewalk.com/2007/04/07/top-audio-books/ - hockeystatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://duggmirror.com/offbeat_news/Top_10_Best_Places_to_Get_Free_Books/
- naturewoman56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the article. Although hardcover books are making a comeback (and I like supporting my public library and Thrift stores), it's nice to have options - especially free ones. A few publishing houses (e.g. Harpercollins.com) will send you free newly published books to review if you're accepted. Kinda cool!
- Idalaide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of larger library systems are also entering into subscription-based arrangements with e-book providers, so you can "check-out" current best-sellers and other popular titles from home. Plus, the stock of e-books is rotating.
