- HenvY, on 10/10/2007, -9/+220In other news, zooming in makes objects appear much closer than they really are.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -12/+129Y HALO THAR!
- vroom101, on 10/10/2007, -21/+117If the fighter jet actually got that close, wouldn't the engine air intake "vaccum" inside everything it possible could?
- eatsleeptrumpet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+89slam on the brakes, that'll show him!
- gmason08, on 10/10/2007, -0/+49You raise an interesting point, however, the strength of wingtip vortices are inversely correlated to airspeed relative to the stall characteristics of a given wing form(airfoil) and positively correlated to weight. The most hazardous time for dealing with another aircraft's wingtip vortices/wake turbulence is when the generating/lead aircraft is in a slow speed regime, primarily takeoff or landing. In this case due to the relative stall speeds/max speeds of the C-130 and this fighter their join up speed would have the C-130 flying well above it's stall speed, thus, the wingtip vortices are relatively weak.
I spent many years piloting a very specialized helicopter that in addition to other capabilities was equipped to be air-refueled. The tanker aircraft we refueled from was always a C-130. Like all conventional helicopters, our top speed/power limitations required the C-130 to slow to close to it's stall speed in order for us(the helicopter) to effect a join up and maneuver for contact with the refueling drogue. Some interesting aerodynamic phenomenon-Once close enough to the tanker(C-130) there is a drafting effect like is commonly mentioned in auto racing(not dramatic but very noticeable and helpful), Yes, you can get in a bad position and feel the effects of wake turbulence but more likely it will be the prop wash. Probably, the most interesting and concerning effect is that due to the direction of rotation of the propellers on the tanker(all 4 turning in the same direction) when attempting to refuel on the right side(as seen from the rear) the prop wash creates a force that pushes the receiver toward the tanker. This effect obviously must be compensated for, is fairly strong and develops rapidly when you get near the area where it occurs. - JDRay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35My career in the military was as a Loadmaster on a C-130 (likely one of the guys you see in the pictures). We never refueled a helicopter, but we had all the instructions for it in our T.O.s. It's one of those things you dreamt about doing while schlepping cargo from one stop to another. I don't know anything about the performance of a Typhoon, but one of the issues we had with tactical missions was that A-10 Thunderbolts, while they could keep up with a Herky just fine, couldn't catch up if they had to peel off to engage opponents. F-16s, though, had a hard time going slow enough to keep from falling out of the sky while escorting a Herky flying at top speed. If the Typhoon bridges the gap speed wise, I can totally see it performing a maeuver like this.
- Stockwell, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27He didn't need to trust himself, just his jet and the guy flying the Hercules.
- vroom101, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25There's another factor to consider: the C-130 Hercules transport's wingtip vortices and wake turbulence. Take a look at these pictures and video of the vortices generated by a couple of USMC KC-130 Hercules aircraft while over the Iraqi desert:

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vyXkD8TVUQ - griffeycom, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Ever heard of the Blue Angels? Thunderbirds? Those pilots go wing-tip to wing-tip at hundreds of MPH, they fly straight at each other at 500MPH and turn opposite ways at the last second. So I don't believe this is fake. Nor is it as impressive as the Blue Angels! But it's still cool!
- Drevor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21failed once again ... he said _D_O_L_L_A_R_S_ last time I checked we had Euros, Pounds, Krones, Swiss Francs and a few other things ... but certainly no dollars ....
- VeganG, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24Say what?
- aznhomig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18"I finally have a lock on!"
- Ratteler, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18"Pardon me, could you pass the Grey Poupon."
- m0tbaillie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Why the hell did somebody digg this guy down? ***** retards.
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15The "vacuum" you are thinking about results only when the plane is stationary. As tehpwnrate said... the plane is basically moving to the air instead of moving the air to it.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13He's just drafting to get better mileage. The Typhoon Hybrid does much better. ;-)
The jet can't very well vacuum the inside of the tanker because there's virtually no airflow through the tanker's fuselage. - dublinclontarf, on 10/10/2007, -13/+25You stupid Yank, it's a Eurofighter, which means it's from a EUROPEAN country (most likely the UK). So don't worry, your American tax dollars are hard at work in Iraq.
- minorthreat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Why are the last pictures digitally zoomed in? You can see the guys arm or leg in the them. They should have left his whole body in the pictures, like the first ones.
- sotopheavy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Actually I am tired of having to ride peoples ass on the freeway! If you are in the left most (passing) lane and are going exactly the speed limit and somebody comes up behind that was going at least 10 MPH faster than you... you should put on your right turn signal and switch lanes to the right as soon as it is safe to do so. If somebody starts riding your ass for a while and ends up having to pass you on the right then you should drive into a construction barrel as soon as one becomes available. Make sure not to hit any other drivers. plzthx
- vroom101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11OK @JamesSpaza, you have the floor so let the DIGGucation begin -- I'm interested in what you have to say.
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Don't you mean
Maverick: "... hit the breaks, and he'll fly right by."
Merlin: "You're gonna do what?!" - strangewill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Wut r u doin? O tkin pix. :)
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10They probably care because they understand human reaction time and the law of physics. No one likes others endangering their life. You should also be careful when slinging around the word "fool"; when a stooge calls someone else a fool it sort of loses its potency.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9it's funny, the people in the comments on the blog arguing about how it's fake or not. Because cropping an image sooo totally makes it fake y'know. Idiots...
Can't people just be impressed with what a cool shot that is instead of turning it into a pissing matching? - yokozuka, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Check the last picture closely. Look at the scale between the details of the ramp and the plane. You can clearly see the bottom of the cargo bay ramp is NOT extremely zoomed in. If it was only an optical effect, everything would have been zoomed in to the max, specially the cargo ramp, which is way closer than the plane to the lenses.
For sure, that plane didn't get its nose inside the cargo bay. But it looks like it got extremely close to the Hercules tail for a couple of seconds. - Boeing, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11I wish we were allowed to do things like that in my company.
The passengers might not appreciate it though :) - thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13In short: "Yes, I am a rocket scientist". Or: "Yes, I am a test pilot"
It's basic fluids equations effects in the real world explained..... at length. - jeremychoi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I did a rough 'chop on this.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1150/942355151_3ee4e1e06d_o.jpg
If it's using the same camera and same focal length, the picture i chopped should be close to what the original looked like. - GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Couldn't we just see the video footage? That'd clear things up. It'd be harder to fake if you'd shown a video of the whole thing.
- gogog0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7countdown until this is on snopes.
- pjdk28, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I agree. On the autobahn you'll get a ticket for poor lane discipline. It's great
- ShibbySandwich, on 10/10/2007, -13/+19See now you re just hating for no reason and being a pompous *****. Where in his statement does it say anything about it being United States tax dollars?
And where does funding for Eurofighters come from? charitable donations?? no i think its also tax dollars. He may very well have been from the UK. So shut the ***** up. - iamweasel1022, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9lol ShibbySandwich got owned
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6haha! you're a pilot my ass
- hooksie, on 10/10/2007, -8/+13CAN HAS JETFIGHTER?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5http://www.fly.faa.gov/Products/Information/CARF/a_blueangels.gif
uhh call me crazy but that looks about as nose to tail as you can get - jerbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Tired of people riding your ass? Stop driving as slow or slower than everyone to your right. You do know that the left lanes are supposed to be for passing the slower people right? That means if the cars on your right are going the same speed or faster than you, you are being a dick. Get over.
If you are correctly positioned in the lanes with faster people to the left and slower people to the right (none to the right if you're the slowest), and someone still rides your ass, then you just play the "how slow can we go on the highway" game. I've been down to 25 mph. - seventoes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4blocked
- Gimli, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I say it's probably not a fake, I say it's more of an optical illusion for the plane is probably not as close to the other plane in reality. Just like when you are driving and look through the side mirror things look closer than they really are (It even says it on the mirror). If you crop a picture taken from a camera that was using a telephoto lens then it will look really close when it reality it isn't.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No, ramjets operate a high speed _because_ they have no compressor. The whole point of a ramjet is the simplicity of it.
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3i wish i could dig this comment up again.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3very carefully
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3gmason08's probably a Slashdot member with that kind of explanation.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm guessing the intake would be mostly getting its air from the relatively stationary air moving into it at whatever the plane's speed was.
- annonimality, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm no pilot, but how do they get close enough to refuel in mid-air?
- djpants428, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Um, if someone is following too closely, and for some reason you have to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident, the guy behind will have no time to react and will end up eating your bumper. So basically, yah, you should care if someone follows you too closely. That's also why it's against the law, and you can be ticketed for tailgating.
- Fawwal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Loadmaster. sounds like a cool job. Im only a LoadMyster
- chuck3330, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2or canada
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"We've had some people claiming these are fakes, they're not"
Well that solves that one, case closed. Now onto the next mystery. - proliance, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The jet isn't going to "vaccuum" anything out of the C-130. Don't you think everything is secured so it won't fly out the back when the cargo door is opened?
