- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Those pics are to be what our year was in a nutshell. It doesn't matter if you are against the war or not, it doesn't change the fact that it's a defining topic of this year.
- Caps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25The last one, of the soldier resting, is a great shot. The light coming through the window sets the mood perfectly.
Edit: Not meant to be a reply.. - hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Wow, what a ***** year.
- srobbin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Wow, those are amazing. The one of the volcano is stunning. And does anyone know what's going on with the horse dunking?
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14They really captured the sadness in our world this year well. They certainly were effective and excellent photographs but it wouldn't hurt to have some happier ones.
- SaintFatMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Place the mouse cursor over the photo.
- empford523, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13So much sadness.
Hopefully 2007 will bring some happier times. - kirashira, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14doesn't make it right.
- jodokast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The one with the destroyed hezbollah stronghold looks like something out of a post-apocolyptic movie. Truly stunning.
- fatcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11My favorite is the last one. Does anyone know were we can download these pictures other then screenshot?
- Misogyny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Your just a dumbass. you dont have flash installed"
You should do tech support for Dell... - razorsharp84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I think it was chosen more for the symbolism of George Bush trying to connect the two leaders.
- Rotkiv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11the horse picture is dumb, but the rest are great. all these wars and stuff and then one lame horse, it's as out of place as you can get.
- gojcaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I liked the MSNBC pics from last year better. Yeah I like livin in the past...
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10467269 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I found http://graphics10.nytimes.com/images/2006/12/12/world/12iraq650.jpg this image was stunning, truly a great photograph.
Of these, I liked the first one, the man among collapsed buildings, and TDF the best. A lot of those could have been better. - jsg7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's Barbaro, the horse that won the Kentucky Derby and then got injured
- Railer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is the problem of most media agencies, nothing positive happened during the enitre year, and it's always the same pictures? We got it people died this year in some really point less ways, it called a war, it sucks.
But come on nothing happened in science? medicine? or nature? ok one volcano, every year there's one volcano, lets be honest these maybe the the pictures of this year, but they certainly don't define it. I dare anyone ten years from now to takes these pictures and mix them up with wars from any other era, from the 60's 70's 80's or 90's and tell me you could say oh ya that was 2006. - Infinitas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The pain that the second picture of the mother and son... Its damn near made me teary eyed. Just to feel the pain in the little boy's heart as he tries to comfort his injured mother, covered in blood. Sigh... if I keep looking at it, I will surely cry.

... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Those pictures looks so much better online than they did in the print magazine.
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Flash player ftw.
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If I looked back on these in a different era i'd probably say "wow, 2006 was depressing. Did nothing possitive happen at all? People just killing eachother, the future is so much better".
Yeah, that's what I'd say. - kollision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here are the direct links to the images.

http://i.timeinc.net/time/yip/2006/largeimages/24.jpg - growlzor, on 10/12/2007, -12/+16How can any pictures with President Bush in them make picture of the year? I mean I could understand if it was his impeachment or something.
- Gatorade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Where can I get a print or a large resolution image of the man in the ruins of the city?
- kassaralzabadi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wondering about the politics of choosing the photos though, why people are crying in an Israeli funeral, while kids are scared from "ceremonial shooting" in their Palestinian father funeral. And no grief of the American soldiers families deserve mentioning?!
For me, I cannot take this photo out of my head

Perfect techniques, too much politics involved. That is why the Big Media are on the wrong course in the era of blogs and Diggnation! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes...it is =/
- matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Wow, what a ***** year."
Welcome to Earth, enjoy your stay. - Rotkiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it can only go down hill from here, with Iran and north Korea getting nuclear weapons and all
- marmanukem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I like the tour de france pic where the woman has two tv's in her kitchen.
- SweetChuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know, it seems to me that in years past the photos were more self-explanatory. They really shouldn't require an explanation other than maybe where and when the photo was taken.
Also I don't think the photos were that good. I think the best were 3 (the bombed out city), 10 (the volcano), and 24 (the soldier sitting in the room).
I think the picture of the Mexicans jumping the wall was pretty good, definitely better than the other two immigration pictures.
I think the pictures of Condi Rice and of the three Presidents were lacking. Of all the photos taken of the President and his entourage, those two are the best?
Of the photos from Chad, the burnt impression was the most striking. The picutre of the village was lacking. The image is so dark it's hard to see what's in the photo, It looked like the remains of a campfire, without the caption the picture has no weight at all.
Also the SS angent standing in the field. Without the caption the image is nothing.
I guess I was expecting more from a Time spread, but I am most surprised that there wasn't a photo from the Amish school shootings. - curlednoodles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4some of those were very average, how they could be considered the best of 2006 i do not know. The volcano was cool, and i liked the thinking marine too.
- gojcaj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The Volcano one is amazing. Any way to grab these pictures without using "Print Screen"?
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@kassaralzabadi, I didn't forget that same picture myself, killing childhood and feeding children the taste of war and hatred.
- rglover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great photoset, my favorites are Condaleeza Rice and the Tour De France house.
- r3mix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great series of photographs that leave me speechless. Speechless. Reflecting on all the events of this year...I just dont know what to say.
I hope things get better is really all I can muster. - Jandels, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Impeach Bush. That should get things rolling...
- friedclyde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thank you for the direct links kollision
- bvnay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Suffer the Children. Im glad I didnt grew up in a war. My sympathies to the angels in war.
- LemonHerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I feel the same way. It is such a powerful picture.
- n0other, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My thoughts exactly. The most emotional picture of them all. I just hope his mother survived and that they are now happy together..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"And does anyone know what's going on with the horse dunking?"
It's the latest craze over at the University of Pennsylvania. - bvnay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oops...*grow*..spell check.
- badave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'll probably get dugg down for this but... where's Britney's hooha?
That's definitely a defining picture of 2006... a real let down. - kassaralzabadi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@master2828
I dugg you up.
Still though, this is Time Magazine, not Photography Review! So I think the message was the main reason! - timro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11. Huh?
2. Welcome to my block list. - francois87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow those images are so powerful.. it often makes me wonder of how little we know about the world around us.
- Sumedh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They were good pics but most of them were not BEST.
- master2828, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Notice this is not a year in review set, this is best photos of 2006, so while other photos might describe the year better these are the best pictures of the year, notice the amazing contrast and composition of these wonderfully taken pictures. Some are chosen for their artistic merit and others for their artistic merit and unspoken message.
- paralleljay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@srobbin: "And does anyone know what's going on with the horse dunking?"
Isn't it obvious? Thats how they retrieve the horses after a vigorous game of Water Polo.
