- internetslacker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+47Great to see the great work of Tesla being used to pump thousands of volts through pear-shaped tourists.

The guy appears to be looking straight into the arc with no eye protection. An electrical discharge of that size would be extremely bright. Funny how there is no shaddow behind him from the arc. The camera man's light/flash cannot be powerful enough to completely wash out a shaddow from that discharge. I'm suspicious about the authenticity of this pic. - timusca, on 10/11/2007, -2/+34Wow, I thought "The most shocking image you'll see today!" was sort of like [AMAZING!]... but it turns, holy *****. This really was the most shocking image I'll see today!

Nope. This one is new. Perhaps you're thinking of this older, completely different post from the same blog:
http://digg.com/hardware/The_Eye_Of_Sauron_made_out_of_a_Tesla_Coil_PICTURE - opusaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Awesome video of a high power line worker walking the lines in his faraday cage suit.

Terrific narration too. "A half a million volts pass over my body but I can work without interference from the electricity." - MrBabyMan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Read more about it here:
http://tesladownunder.com/tesla_coil_sparks.htm#Dalek%20cage - unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21Wow this is really bad for his eyes, this is emitting UV just like an arc welder and he needs to have protective glasses on. He is gonna lose his eyesight in no time.
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22I don't know if you're actually a horrible racist or if you're just trying to be funny, but either way... lame.
- dotMH, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17EXTERMINATE!
- peabody624, on 10/11/2007, -6/+22Submitted 40 seconds ago and 94 diggs? Front page already? Oh, MrBabyMan submitted it.
- mklopez, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22Dugg for the reference to "Doctor Who"!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Tesla is the most under-appreciated scientist of his age.
- nullx42, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18IT OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!!!
- Tesladownunder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Technically I'm apple shaped. Nice of you to notice. Voltage is upwards of 200kV. Close to 500kV when reaching 8 foot sparks.
- sorrow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Literally, yes. But the picture i want to see is when the quote "stupidity should be painful" comes true.. for example, what happens if he sneezes mid-charge? Now THAT would be shocking!
- 2point71, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10"The Prestige" anyone?
- antoniojvr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Only stairs can defeat them.
- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Quite literally.
- z00k, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I could see myself having way to much fun with that thing.
- ghm101, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10nothing can cage a dalek

- Tesladownunder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7LOL. That would be my son paying me back for leaving him in the car in the "Tesla car thief protection" picture.
- Tesladownunder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7My glasses have a UV filter. It is very effective. Actually the sparks are end on and not as bright as arc welder sparks.
- BrokenWind, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6ummm, there's electricity involved (and a pun).
not so lame really. - spiffyfitz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10This is not war! This is pest control!
- Zippo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Touch the cage, I dare you.
- Jdban, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I love Doctor Who. EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE.
The Daleks will destroy everything. - ScottoGato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't know what is more impressive in that video...the people walking on the power lines or the pilot of the helicopter.
- anothernobody, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@unusualbob
From TFA - "I have high efficiency earmuffs on and my glasses have a UV filter." - Tesladownunder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Hey, tinfoil hats rock, especially in the pool.
http://tesladownunder.com/tesla_coil_sparks.htm#Pool - dictum, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The best part is that the guy taking the photograph refused to turn it off and just left him there.
- Tesladownunder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I have done a video as well which includes this effect. It was made as part of an advert for BMW and will hopefully be posted soon. You get a much better impression of what is happening and that should silence the photoshop skeptics.
- apollomurga, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3if only benjamin franklin was alive to see this
- Toupee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They could fly in the old series too.
Trust me, I downloaded all 200+ gigs of it last year! - dougmc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Doing that sort of thing requires quite a bit of faith ...
I remember freshmen physics in college (I ended up getting my BS in it) where the professor had a bowling ball on a rope connected to the ceiling of the very tall room (Painter Hall I think, University of Texas.) He'd go up to the top of the auditorium, put the bowling ball in front of his nose, and let it go. It would go down to the bottom, then go up the other side, the back down, and back at the professor's face ... and miss it by an inch.
You KNEW it had to miss his face, due to conservation of energy, but still, it would take a lot of faith to sit there as it came up to your face, awfully fast until the very end.
I know how and why a faraday cage works. But I don't know if I'd want to sit right there and take a chance that something would go wrong. - SpaceDreamer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3why wasn't that armor available in Red Alert?
- robo73, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Why the hell are they doing this to Patton Oswald!?!
- zeejay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah - somebody surely spent hours Photoshopping this ridiculous photo, because there's no easier ticket to wealth and fame than a picture of a chubby nerd with a huge electrical arc over his forehead.
- LostOnion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Cris Angel IS a pussy.
- boyhowdy25, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@wastinghope, et al.
I spent three years "in the cage" at the Boston Museum of Science demonstrating the Van De Graaf generator -- and striking the cage with lightning while I touched the inside.
Twice, I slipped, and let my fingers stray through the cage bars...
It's startling, but more than anything it feels like hitting your funny bone, really hard.
In case you're curious, that's because the amount of stuff being pushed at you (what does the damage) isn't the same as the amount of "push" the stuff has (what makes the sparks fly). High voltage, low current = 15 foot long sparks striking the cage but little pain when you get hit.
More here: http://www.mos.org/sln/toe/cage.html . That's ME in the cage, back in my long-haired days.
In fact, the worst health problem I ever had from that gig was hearing loss. - BrokenWind, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2hey mrbungle, does light cast a shadow ?
- Th3Element05, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Chris Angel from Mindfreak went up against an even bigger Tesla coil while wearing a chain mail shark suit. He went to the hospital after he got hit by 1 billion volts (equivalent to a lightning strike).
What an idiot. - Tesladownunder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3No photoshopping anywhere on my site. Why bother. The real thing is dramatic enough. All the details on my site. I can show you heaps of similar shots that didn't make the final cut too.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2(ominous voice speaking): Why won't my new disciple accept the new powers I am trying to bestow upon him!
- tripleplay369, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The light that is casting his shadow is from some kind of heavy duty work lights, not the flash from the camera. Look at the angle of the shadow.
- DesuKN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Real Daleks don't need stairs. They just level the building.
- Punisher2K, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I worked on a guys PC today and he had a webcam video of himself stripping on there. No, this is not the most shocking thing I've seen all day.
