Jelllyfish kill more people than sharks. Why aren't we posting jellyfish hotspots? - fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Someone apparently forgot to take their pills.
- gbro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15pfft. I've been swimming there plenty of times and I still have most of my limbs.
- Smigge87, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Just to calm everyone down, but every year more people are bitten by New Yorkers than by sharks. So where would you rather go, to the nice warm sunny beach or New York?
- HypocriteDigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Lighting kills more people than terrorists. Why aren't we in a 'Global War on Lightning"?
- Ventolin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The entire Australian coast. There's your list right there.
- mrdeathgod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Dugg for the browser title alone!
- giveer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Damn. down already.. did anything catch it? Lame comment I realize, but I really wanna read it.. :P
- macslut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Digg effect, or really, really smart sharks?
- VeganG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"If you've ever swam in the ocean, chances are pretty good that you've been within a 5+ foot shark without knowing it."
Your ass must be huge, to be able to pull THAT bs out of it. - sonycam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Can I add that Sharks are amazing creatures which get a really bad press. The creator of Jaws regretted making the film and said if he knew how it would trigger such a strong hate for Sharks, he never would've made it. They just need to be treated with respect.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5*sigh* there's a text picture of this dude freaking out due to a shark being right next to him. The comment system won't allow for me to show him...
- Spikeli27, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4amen, ppl are just so paranoid about sharks, chances are so low, and if the beach is great, hell with the sharks!
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Much like the fearsom beast in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, all the fear is inspired by the pointy teeth.

- brucerchapman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I call BS. Been swimming in it and fishing on it my whole life - never even seen a shark. It's more dangerous to cross the road to get to the beach than to swim in the water.
- nodonoug, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4b/c that won't guarantee the fear vote
- ASSHO, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This list is not very credible. First, most U.S. shark attacks happen in Florida. Two, more shark attacks have happened outside of Bolinas, in NorCal, at Salmon Creek. Pretty much take the whole of San Mateo to Humboldt, and you have get 90% of all attacks in California. If you consider that California gets 20x more beach goers than the whole of Oregon, you're statistical chances of attacks in Oregon far out weigh California:
http://www.sharkresearchcommittee.com/2000.htm
The worst shark attack in the Pacific happened in Oregon. As for Oahu, when you consider the amount of people per mile of coastline, Hawaii is pretty damn safe.
The probability of you getting munched by a shark (maybe fatal, maybe not), vs. the probability of DYING in a car accident, is half. - Stephiems, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, the credibility of this list went out the window for me with Brisbane being put on the list. South Australia or Western Australia are much more dangerous then Brisbane. I'm pretty sure the water gets too warm up in Queensland for Great Whites. I'm sure one ventures up every once in awhile, but mainly they tend to stick to colder water.
- Lister169, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Plus, the Landshark stalks NYC.
candygram... - garagethrash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Brisbane isn't near the coast... It's like saying Alice Springs beaches have heaps of sharks.
- mrgreenjeans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If you click on the Victim's Gallery, it offers to send them as an eCard. Just what Mom wanted.
- UtahApocalyse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Also known as "where the ***** I'm not swimming."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4For those who don't get it: ___/__o/___
- Devski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yep. South Australia is a prick of place to get eaten by sharks.
It's even much worse than the map indicates as South Australia has about 1/6th the population of New South Wales (next highest on the list) and inevitably far fewer people using the beaches.
I would think that the beaches surrounding Port Lincoln would be right up the list - after all it has the highest population of White Pointers in the world and was the filming location for the real footage in the fisrt Jaws. - rauz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Speaking of infested bitches, what's Paris Hilton up to these days?
- cupajoe60, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ha, I surf at Bolinas Beach all the time. Rule of thumb: If there are no seals around, there is a good chance there is a shark in the water. I actually saw an 8 foot Great White jump out of the water not 300 feet away from where I was surfing. Needless to say, I got out of the water pretty damn quick.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The servers down, it seems, so I can't check for sure, but I'm skeptical. Sharks have serious difficulties out of water, so you rarely see them on the beach.
- BerenTW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2crap list... well for brisbane at least.
Of all the places in australia to pick for the worst spot for sharks it isn't it. Queensland as a whole isn't even all that 'sharky'. it is ranked last in the number of attacks and fatalities. South Australia is where the sharks are at.
http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks/White/Australia.htm - dvsbastard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't say its complete BS as I have heard my fair share of shark alarms... but to be fair you are a lot more likely to injure / kill yourself in the carpark than getting attacked by a shark!
- giveaphuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1-Brisbane, Australia: Great whites, bulls, et al ??????
i used to live there, we don't even have a beach, sure there is a river there, but i've never seen a shark in it, & besides you'd be insane to want 2 swim in there 'cause its so polluted... - colto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I thought I told you to stop talking to yourself. The other kids already think your nuts so there's no reason to remove any doubt.
- sathias, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And don't you worry about the day-glo orange life preserver
It won't save you
It won't save you
Swim for the shores just as fast as your able - loopyloopy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Brisbane gets it because no ones heard of South or Western Australia
- MarkLaymon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Server is not showing most of the graphics.
Palm Beach should be on the list too. Every time I do a beach dive I see 3 to 5 bull sharks. One local bull shark is become very tame. It will eat the fish right off your spear. I am glad he does not like people! - AccuraCast, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The vistim's pics page is gross! I did not need to see the Croc Attack pics of the body parts .
I don't blame the sharks but i'd be damned if i go swimming near any of them! - halavais, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My sister was attacked by an 18 foot great white (google my username) while surfing at a beach, and a coastline, known for shark attacks. The chances remain very slim, but if that's not the way you want to go, maybe you pick somewhere less sharky to swim or surf.
- DarthBrady, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1why the ***** would I swim in Africa?
- dadood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ouch! Be sure to check out the victims gallery. http://swimatyourownrisk.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/fgallery/fim_photos.php
- brucerchapman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Lame. Brisbane doesn't even have a beach, unless you mean the fake one in a pool they built in the middle of the city to give the tourists somewhere to swim. North Stradbroke Island, maybe, there was a fatal attack there last year, but that's definitely not 'Brisbane'
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Forget Jaws. I've never understood people who go out of their way to swim in waters knowingly that there have been shark sitings there. I wouldn't jump in if my life depended on it.
- thejokell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I see what you did there...
- Juano11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1We went to New Symrna Beach a few times when I was a kid. There were signs everywhere touting it as The World's (or America's) "Safest Beach".
Funny stuff. - Cybrwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I may be a pussy, but at least I won't be lunch!
- halavais, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Salmon Creek is where my sister had a Great White nearly bite her leg off a little while back:
http://alex.halavais.net/megan-on-national-geographic/
But yeah, she's still out surfing the same coastline. Risk remains as low for a second attack as it did for the first, so I don't worry much about that. There are so many easier ways to die, why let a few fish get in the way of living. - olddirtycr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Google cache has it with pics
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bolinas is so damn awesome. I've seen sharks lift whole 1000 pound seals right out of the water in the lagoon, while we sat up and toked on the beach.
- dupeduperson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think the shark on the picture for West End, Grand Isle Bahamas is a sand tiger shark, not a tiger shark. BIG difference.
