- newyawker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+79It doesn't say they wrote DOS. It says they BOUGHT the rights to DOS.
- Rosamilia, on 10/11/2007, -4/+77That was a graph of people who look like Santa
edit :argh, new comment system casualty... - euarchonta, on 11/13/2007, -3/+47Rockefeller didn't make the majority of his fortune from oil, but rather through the porn industry.
- qpid, on 10/31/2007, -1/+41seeing as how all but two are dead.....
- LucidHawk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+42The Rockefeller family has so many spread uncounted assets to this day that their full wealth has been estimated between 100 billion and 13 trillion dollars. Most of it is tied up in banking, that's how untraceable their power is and why they are the butt of many conspiracy theories labeling them as the first or second most powerful people on earth..
- psmonteiro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35no, that's Kockefeller.
- rhabd0mancer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+34I admire Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt not for his tremendous wealth, but for his powerful, awe-inspiring muttonchops.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+40Most of these guys were Robber Barron's whose actions during their time would have made the Enron scandal look like a traffic violation. The working conditions they provided for their "employees" would have pushed them into the political arena to force legislation to shut down OSHA in modern times. And their heirs are still drinking Rum and Coke on the beaches of Cancun while the rest of us go to work every day.
- Powerdrift, on 10/11/2007, -6/+35From Rockefeller's obituary: http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/6213/picture2oj9.png
oops - imthe1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26It's only a small paragraph, didn't you read it. It never said they wrote it. it say "bought rights to operating system". "bought right to" is very different from "wrote". go back and read it again dumb ass.
- rmw132, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26Stephen Girard = Steve Ballmer clone?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24I believe it was a freudian slip. somebody has something on their mind, i just can't seem to put my finger on it...
- taintedzodiac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24Isn't it still illegal to kockafeller? In public, at least.
- Warrzie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23Yeah atari, nice reading skills.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26Just another reason why we need a graph section on digg
- ViperCTW, on 10/31/2007, -0/+22So he's STILL making money?
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22Pretty funny to look at - you've got all these robber barons with eye monocles and top hats and then you have Bill smiling in a pink polo shirt... that Girard dude looks like Balmer BTW!
- Dolomite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22"John D. Kockefeller" huh? Sounds like someone has penis on their mind.
- allengeer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20I like your profile icon juxtaposed with but are they happy.
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25I am not saying this graph is inaccurate, but I always remember these types of graphs showing Andrew Carnegie as the richest man with a fortune of $200 billion (in contemporary dollars)
- evi1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22The middle class saw most of its growth after these men accumulated there fortunes, and now it is eroding back toward 1800 numbers.
- kinerry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19actually, some of these guys are why we have anti-monopoly laws now
- Iamthechamp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19So far 57+ people did not bother checking and believed your comment accurate...unbelievable...
- LooseCannon1, on 10/11/2007, -26/+44"The wealthiest 1 percent control almost all of the money in America. I'm one, but I'm a Dem."
You're a DEM? It would explain why you're so completely ignorant and lying through your teeth. I really doubt you're 'RICH'. Generally, RICH people don't admit it and typically don't consider themselves 'RICH'.
According to the Economic Policy Institute "The wealthiest 1% of households control about 38% of national wealth". Last I checked, 38% and 'almost all' are not even close to being the same.
Why do you leftists continue to spread your lies when it's so easy to verify these facts online??
http://www.epi.org/content.cfm/press_releases_swa2000pr - rritterson, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19now i'm curious. Do you have a source I can read?
- cykyc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Which is true even on a Dvorak keyboard...
- vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Whatever happened to that poor fellow who made QDOS?
- SirBriggs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15All but 2 are dead.
- atari77, on 10/11/2007, -95/+110I love how they state Bill Gates & Paul Allen wrote DOS. I was unaware of that fact...maybe they should check their facts.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14How many Freudians does it take to change a lightbulb?
Two.
One to change the bulb, and a second to hold the penis. I mean... ladder. - chilekillr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13The Wealthiest AMERICANS ever.
- ubhe, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16most of them are industrialist of when America was just beginning to establish herself. difficult to imagine what the world would be like without them. its hard to imagine how anyone would be able to establish anything even close in this day and age.
- Morphinity, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Way to completely miss the point of this article, *****.
- mtwolf, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15don't forget fur trading and real estate.
- rritterson, on 10/30/2007, -0/+11It's all about figuring out what the next big life changing events and technology will be, then getting there before everyone else and establishing your stake.
- vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15Hrm... Strange how the top 5 are all monopolists. (Some convicted of such in a court of law)
- jasonshaffer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11What are you doing with the money you earn to feed the children you speak of?
- sprx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10If he obtained citizenship, that officially makes you a citizen.
And he likely got it before he made all those billions. - TSCheredar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Ah yes, Kockerfeller, who of course won his billions by selling porcelains toilets.
- downat420, on 10/11/2007, -0/+999%? You need a fact checking department.
- nodnarb24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Daxsymbiot, you can't just give away all your money and magically expect it to cure the world's ills overnight. When you have that kind of money and you really want to make a real and permanent difference, it takes time and long term planning.
- TehdBerg, on 10/11/2007, -8/+17Damn you LooseCannon and your hard-hitting internet 'investigatory journalism'! You sure exposed his obvious exaggeration with another sickening number. I'm not sure if you've taken any Economics classes, but let's be realistic here, 38% of an entire nations wealth in the hands of 1% of the pop basically proves his point. I'll use that number and source for your good NeoCon buddy up there, otherland2008:
The total household wealth of the United States is around 18 trillion dollars. There are 105 households in the US according to the 2000 Census. This means just over a million people control $6,840,000,000,000. This comes out to an average of $6,514,285 per household.
Now, on the other end of the stick, we see from your source that the bottom 80% control only 17% of the national wealth. Again, with some quick maths (I know it's hard for ya, just stick with me) we see that 84million households control $3,060,000,000,000. This works out to be an average of $36,428.
"So much for libs claiming America is becoming more and more disparate between classes" ?
I guess a difference of $6,477,857 PER HOUSEHOLD on average just isn't a big enough gap for you, huh?
"Damn lying libs with their fancy numbers and facts. I looked at a chart and saw old guys!" - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10They can't. No one can establish as much wealth as these men did in their time without going to the Fed house. The level of corruption required is not possible. Bill Gates did it about as cleanly as you can and his actions are still the subject of debate.
- thebaron2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Don't feed the troll.
- imthe1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I don't think that's a racist comment. It's only racist if you say something derogatory in relation to the color of skin. For example "cracker ass cracker!", that could be considered racist.
