- taylorhayward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I've been in the technology industry for 17 years. I'll tell you this my friends, work has the best success rate.
And I'm not just talking about staying late, I'm talking about doing the research WORK to see if your kidding yourself before you sink 20000 man hours in a project. What do people want? That is the basis for any product viability research.
Design WORK. Making sure all the pieces are going to be put in place during production, not when the box is heading out the door. Missing important details late in development = big dollars.
Oversight WORK. Checking on everything. Measuring that things are getting done. I've been sending daily checklists to my managers for 6 years. This idea spreads like wildfire in companies... and with good reason.
And finally... People WORK. Forming good relations with: employees, contractors and the people selling your product. We're all in this together. People can smell selfishness and greed a mile away. If you're not enjoying what you're doing and you're just in it for the money, no amount of money will make you nice person. People don't like dicks. Go find your true calling. - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11#1. Do I have millions to piss away?

- fxmcleod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Guy Kawasaki is an amazing teacher, "The Art of the Start" is a good read for entrepreneurs.
I love the bonus points for people with engineering backgrounds.
Not sure why the hell young people would want to be VC's though... - fxmcleod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Your advice seems more for entrepreneurs than for VCs

Just curious, what was your VCAT score? ;)
Antony Awaida - dansage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I graduated from an entrepreneurship program in the Marriott School of Management at BYU. I loved the education, but one downside was dealing with exactly what Guy is talking about here. There are so many caught up in the romantic idea of what being an entrepreneur means that they overlooked the work that preceded it. All of the speakers we had were those that had already harvested and that's what a lot of the aspiring entrepreneurs were dreaming of right out of college. All people would talk about was which start up they were going to work for and how there was huge potential in it. I completely agree with Guy's comments. There are plenty of great recent college grads and there isn't anything wrong with VCs or wanting to get in on investments, but even Mike Moritz would agree that hard work comes first.
