- clownfart, on 03/29/2008, -2/+62I though this was going to be something funny or clever, but no. Its just a short bike lane. big ***** deal. Why did they waste paint on it you ask? Why on earth did you waste time making and editing that video?
- naich, on 03/29/2008, -1/+33Compared to these ones it's a masterpiece of design

That said, I want 2 minutes of my life back. - VinnieDaMac, on 03/29/2008, -1/+20Wasn't there a bike lane right next to the river with no railing? I saw that picture on digg awhile ago.
- l23devlin, on 03/29/2008, -2/+16i want to punch that guy in the face.
- jamwil87, on 03/29/2008, -1/+12Really Digg?
- rengeek, on 03/29/2008, -2/+12No Digg. Not funny, not that interesting. Plus I had to turn off adblocker to get it to play since the page (and video) is full of spam.
- lgc90, on 03/29/2008, -0/+10At least you put some effort into it.
- skateboard1, on 03/29/2008, -1/+11I never noticed that bike lane before but now that I know It's there I'll use it more often.

Use street view - EskNerd, on 03/29/2008, -2/+7I'm confused. How'd this make the front page?
- Liam, on 03/29/2008, -0/+4Working in bicycle advocacy groups with transportation departments, I can guess how this happens. Basically, bicycle lanes, like many street alterations, are events of opportunity. If a street is being dug up or resurfaced, when it is time to repaint, the DOT may look at it and say "that is on our bicycle master plan, it needs a bike lane" and add that. They won't stripe the next block because that lane wasn't resurfaced for whatever reason. But when its time comes, it might be done. Before making a snarky video, it's worth checking with the bike/ped coordinator and/or bicycle master plan. It may be stupid, and it may not.
Having said that, there are far stupider lanes. In DC, the Suitland Parkway trail (not just a lane mind you, a completely separate trail) runs right to the Maryland border, then stops. The asphalt ends with trees and shrubs right ahead of you, there is no merge onto the roadway, there is no way to go anywhere but turn around the way you came. - brad3378, on 03/30/2008, -0/+4you got me - but dugg anyway
- robotto, on 03/29/2008, -0/+4Those are seriously wack UK lanes.
- cpcouvillion, on 03/29/2008, -0/+3Houston has them all over the place. The Feds gave out money based on how many miles of bike lanes a city had, so they just painted them wherever they could. They go off in directions no one would travel. There are a couple places where the bike lane is actually between two traffic lanes. Generally though, they just put the cyclists where the storm sewer grates, trash, and parked cars are.
You take your life into your own hands on a bicycle in Houston as it is, I never see anyone fool enough to try to use the bike lanes. - dangsta, on 03/29/2008, -2/+5grow some balls and ride in the street with the rest of traffic!
- stoobywon, on 03/29/2008, -1/+4well its good if you live on one side of the block and work on the other
- herkalees, on 03/29/2008, -0/+3I'm sick and tired of those ads that pop up in the bottom of many internet videos. Effing sell-outs...
- EnjoyTheFact, on 03/29/2008, -3/+6Who the ***** cares?
- Allibaster, on 03/30/2008, -1/+4I hate bicyclists. Running lights, cutting you off, not paying attention.....The list goes on. Use the sidewalk and pay attention to the rules of the road. Leave the streets to the cars.
- Kavok, on 03/29/2008, -0/+3It's stupid that you talk.
- rjam710, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2I knew there wasn't a video for that! You bastard!
- nickbarber, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2This is one time where I will actually applaud somebody trying to rickroll me.
- HtomSirveaux, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2I would agree with Allibaster. I live outside of Denver, Colorado where all of the weekend warriors come out to cycle all day in the Spring and Summer. I've lost count of how many times I've nearly hit a cyclist because they ignored a stop sign or have witnessed them do it. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a cyclist stop at a stop sign. So I don't know if it's not required for some reason or what. I understand that technically, riding a bicycle on the sidewalk is illegal, but it would be much safer. I'm fine with sharing the road as long as it's safe, i.e. marked bike lanes and trails only, but giving cyclists free reign on any street I think is just irresponsible. Especially when they want to bitch and moan about sharing the road while not sharing the rules of the road.
- mcrosby, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2This video is lame! Why bother filming a short bike lane??! Marked as LAME!
- inactive, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2Haha, I use February's bike lane quite a lot...Never hit that tree though :P
- eOgas, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2Haha, didn't see that one coming!
- woofers07, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2you're in LA, what do you expect, your car is your ONLY means of transportation.
- clarionhaze, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2No kidding, this guy has obviously never been to San Antonio. It's amazing how the capitol of a place like Texas, Austin, can be so liberal and find ways to accommodate progressive lifestyles while not even an hour away you have San Antonio which mocks such ideas with useless bike lanes everywhere.
- nysus, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2Slate V: dumb videos for dumb people with MTV production values. Waste of my ***** time.
- themastersb, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2I've seen a dumber bike lane. I don't think it's in the US though. It's about 1/2 a meter wide and right beside a river. There's a pic going around of it, but I cant find it.
- ju66l3r, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2Stupidest in the country? It's not even the shortest one in LA:
http://www.lacity.org/PLN/Cwd/GnlPln/TransElt/Bike ... - hobbers, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Anyone with adblock not see the video? Slate has done something interesting where they've embedded the video id into a reference to a doubleclick resource. So if you have adblock blocking doubleclick media, the video doesn't show up! Just turn adblock off for a second, reload the page, and the video comes up. A sign of the times to come?
- Singulariter, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1Definitely a well cut video, cheers!
- Rabscuttle, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1thats retarded, just ride on the road. and take off that ***** vest, if you cant react to danger quickly enough you need a bike lane, you need a kick in the neck
- RevoFM, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1No you!
- TheKappa, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Meh.
- kd1s, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1Here in Providence, RI they put bike lanes in stupid places. I'll have to video them once the weather gets better.
- earliodookie, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1lol, that's at ucla. it sucks biking in westwood.
- coustoe, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1no you
- xtremesniper, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1I have a "bike lane" on a few streets near my house. There's signs and everything, but the only problem is that there are no lines, and the lanes are just wide enough for a car to get through. Nothing more.
- Rysac1, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1In some counties or cities they have a law saying they don't have to stop all the way, but they do have to slow to 5 MPH. Once a bicycle is in a intersection with stop signs it has the right of way like a pedestrian using the crosswalk. In a signaled intersection a bicycle has to obey the signal the cars do.
- TsuruchiBrian, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1You know when I started to watch this video I did not know what to expect.
I quickly realized that the video depicted the area where I lived and the school I attended, but I didn't know anything about bike lanes at UCLA. Wait... I used to ride a bike to school everyday. How did I do that?
Oh yeah... I rode on the sidewalk. Because it is ***** insane dodging rich guys in fancy cars that can spare a little time not to hit you, but not a lot. It just makes sense to shift the danger from yourself to regular pedestrians. Instead of fearing for my own life, I would just try really hard to avoid running over my fellow students walking to and from school. It was not that hard, because I cared not just for my own life but for the the lives of all other poor people like me. - caif, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1After biking in Manhattan, Bronx, and Queens for years, Its A Line! Not a Wall! So?
- ryuujinusa, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1hilarious
- madcat033, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Ok that was weird... I live a few blocks from that bike lane, I didn't even know it was there.
- dannylewis, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1In Lexington, KY, the damn right turning lanes cross the bike lane. Each time I use a right turning lane I think of how easy it would be to hit a cyclist because I didn't check my right rear view mirror.
