- robdiggity, on 10/11/2007, -6/+76 But Keifer Sutherland was only 8 years old in 1974...
- Gophergreg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21And yet, even at 8, he knew that "PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE!"
- warpdragon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17You do realize this is an obituary, right?
- tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Anyone can follow orders and shoot at a helicopter. The real hero is the guy who has the balls to make the call himself, knowing full well if he screws up he could get in big trouble.
See how I turned that around? - omgroffles, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19So he ORDERED the helicopter to be shot down?
Man and I thought it was going to be a story about a bottom rank secret service agent who had nobody to ask for permission to shoot a helicopter down, so he picked up a bazooka and took it out himself.
Oh well this story is cool too I guess. - bradym80, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17this story completly glazed over who the pilot was and his motives.
- jackmaht, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I think that's ***** cool he downed a helicopter. That guy kicks ass.
- csl5049, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Well I mean, seriously people, you mean to say that you've never shot down a helicopter?
- tomboy501, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15I think it's cool that there wasn't such a bloated bureacracy back in the mid-70s ...that a Secret Service agent could make an instant call like that when he couldn't get an answer from a higher-up. Someone needs to do something quickly when there are errant aircraft flying towards government buildings.
Actually...I didn't even know that a helicopter had ever been shot down on the White House lawn until I read this story - tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Probably because it was about the Agent's life and his accomplishments, not some deranged fool.
- Kevinok, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Wow he worked on the Bell X-1, that is pretty awesome.
- theholyraptor, on 04/07/2008, -1/+11Anyone else picture the helicopter crashing onto the lawn of the White House like the crashing of the spaceship after being shot in Men In Black?
- pokmonth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_K._Preston
^^^Explains pilot and motives^^^ - microview2007, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10So a "copter landed in a blaze of gunfire on the south lawn of the White House" in 1974 and were just now hearing about it? Where the hell was FOX news?
- EochaidRiata, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8President Ford tripped over his shoelace that day so they were replaying the clip 712 times and interviewing Faye Dunaway and Burt Reynolds to get their thoughts on the unruly lace.
- Battleloser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Things are never what they seem.
- TOMHTML, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Kulbaski is Jack Bauer's father.
DAMN IT! - arjie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Thanks pokmonth.
Oh interesting. The SS agent ordered the helicopter downed and when it was fired at, the slightly injured pilot landed. The headline sounds like he actually shot it down himself. - ArenaRon, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12Don't be a dick, what did you ever accomplish in your life other than wise ass comments on digg - ass
- Winston84, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8the Secret Service in charge : Attack avoided, perp downed..
Cheney/Rumsfeld in charge : 3 out of 4 targets hit ... - akashra, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yes, but did he kill the helicopter with a car?
- memoBug, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Yipee-kay-yay, *****!
- memoBug, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'd be more impressed if he worked in the tidbit that it was an OBITUARY
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You got a problem with Accordions or their players ?
I'd like to see you hop around 120 tiny black buttons.
Please someone buy me a Roland FR-7s - Ianki, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Me, i'm glad that the poster kept in the tiny important fact that it happened in 1974. Getting somewhat tired of old information being dugg on the assumption that it pertains to the current administration.
- vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is more intresting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Byck
The guy who was inspired by the helicopter who tried to hijack an airliner to fly it into the white house (this was 9/11 in the 70s... guess it wasn't so original and we didn't have "war on terrorism" back then) - oMeSSiaHo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I caught this story on the local news this morning. I had to laugh at the polka bit, not because it was random but because it was expected. Some people from where he's from still speak German.
- bocaJWho, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Rest in peace.
- markh1967, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm sure that it takes great skill to play an accordion but that doesn't mean it sounds good, even so.
My take on accordion music is probably best summed up by a cartoon I once saw:
It had two panels, one showing a line of people at the gates of heaven with St. Peter walking along the line saying to each person "Welcome to Heaven, here's your harp" and the second showing another line outside the gates of hell with Satan walking down the line saying to each person "Welcome to Hell, here's your accordion" - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I see what you did there.
- miriclaire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2And yet Bush and Rice and others said they have never heard the scenario befoire of someone using a plane as a missile.
- anonym41414, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Being a Secret Service watch commander is NOT lame, jackass.
- batshitcrazy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5but the entire military couldn't take out a hijacked jet heading for the pentagon more than an hour after the towers were struck. silly.
- harrymcwealth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This guy is the definition of "Bad Ass."
- triforcer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2that didn't explain his motives at all!
- FrozenGonad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised it got the chance to actually, "buzz the Whitehouse" once.. Well, I guess it was 1974.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Pffft. When I fight Chuck Norris, it aint friendly. It's to the death, *****.
- Morphinity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yet, even at 8, he was in Chinese prison.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Huh, apparently the helicopter wasn't shot down. The guy landed it himself.
- LadySophia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Aside from the chopper shooting (which makes sense - the chopper pilot should have @ least radioed and given an explanation of its actions, or made the SOS sign or something), the guy did his job, served his country and later passed away. My condolences to his family and friends.
(and for those who wonder what Jack Bauer would have done in this situation, he'd done the same except that he'd have interrogated the pilot on site. Shooting him in the legs again would have been an option (or a definite task) during the interrogation procedure). - DogHumpsMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's not a news story, it's an obituary. It's written to memorialize a man's life, not answer questions you might have.
- DogHumpsMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Pellets as in 00 buckshot fired from a 12 gauge shotgun. Not pellets as in fired from an air rifle.
- interval, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2there are snipers standing on top of the White House 24/7 and will shoot down anything that comes near it. this was not the case with 9/11.
- Pauliver, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2But Glenn Morshower (Aaron Pierce) was 15.
- dezmo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2good luck
- ljankowski, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is great, this was my uncle. I've lived with him the past few years as he fought cancer. Some of the storys he used to tell us was great! I wish he wrote a book. It's nice to see everyone talking about him today. It's people like this we should never forget!
- Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I dunno. The old guy in the Tesco tunnel in town sounds like ***** with an accordion, but when I was in France at a coffee shop, it sounded pretty ***** cool.
- GhandiBurger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was expecting something more along the lines of "Shooter."
- boballende, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/1159300.stm
In February 1974, an army private stole a helicopter from Fort Meade Maryland. He passed over the White House and went to the south grounds where he hovered for about 6 minutes. He briefly touched down about 50 metres (150 feet) from the West Wing.
Guards did nothing, unaware that the helicopter had been stolen.
The man piloted the helicopter aware from the White House before being chased back to the area by two Maryland State Police helicopters.
He returned to the White House grounds and lowered himself to about 10 metres (30 feet) above the ground. Guards fired on the helicopter with shotguns and submachine guns.
The army private set the crippled chopper down, suffering from minor injuries. - Asianwaste, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Kulbaski: A Secret Service watch commander and Polka accordion player. It's a paradox. Something so cool and something so lame at the same time.
