- jsand42, on 09/06/2008, -7/+166This is the flag in question:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:US_51_Star_poss ...
From top to bottom, the rows of stars are 9, 8, 9, 8, 9, 8 = 51 - spunkz, on 09/06/2008, -3/+152It was the Puerto Rico delegation. They also had signs that said, "51st State"
- ajUCI, on 09/06/2008, -9/+155Made in China.
- Skitzzo, on 09/06/2008, -4/+77If there's only one start under the dudes hand then the horizontal rows would go 8,8,9,8,9,8 which would be a bit strange.
Traditional flags have horizontal rows of 6,5,6,5,6,5,6,5,6 so either way this flag is abnormal. - inactive, on 09/06/2008, -43/+92Fail.
- raisputin3, on 09/06/2008, -17/+62from bottom to top 8+9+8+9+8+9 = 51
For some of you Meathead McCain supporters 3 rows of 8 =24, 3 rows of 9 = 27. 24+27=51
Hence, it is quite logical and accurate to say that this flag has 51 stars and is therefore ODD
The United States Army Institute of Heraldry has plans for flags with up to 56 stars, using a similar staggered star arrangement should additional states accede. There are political movements supporting statehood in Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, among other areas. - vvvvvvv, on 09/06/2008, -3/+39Here's the 50 star flag for reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Flag_of_the_Uni ...
- MikeCP, on 09/06/2008, -4/+37EPIC WIN
- psilly, on 09/06/2008, -8/+39Back to 50 after Alaska secedes.
- kirby14, on 09/06/2008, -8/+39Stop with the logic! Don't you know that the Republicans are evil and stupid.
- badtzmartin, on 09/06/2008, -4/+33IT WAS THE DELEGATION FROM PUERTO RICO!!!!
- guice, on 09/06/2008, -6/+34You people with 50 count need to learn symmetry and patterns. If you have two rows, 8 and 9, alternating, it's fair to assume that the top row is indeed a 9 row. Adding them up = 51.
- AmericanGunner, on 09/06/2008, -3/+29Everyone welcome Puerto Rico!
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -30/+56How many diggs did zaibatsu's picture of nothing get? Can this submission beat that?
Yeah, Digg isn't broken at ALL. He has about 100 friends who script Digg anything he submits, garbage or not. Lame factor = 9
/digging it up, just to add to the zaibatsu legend of ignorance. - EmitStop, on 09/06/2008, -79/+103I count 50, assuming that their is only one star under the dudes hand.
- troyfoley, on 09/06/2008, -9/+32I watched some of the RNC. It's obvious that the 51st star represents the state of denial.
- ChristophyBrown, on 09/06/2008, -5/+23Coming from a neutral perspective (different country) I just hate how biased Digg is.
If that were Palin, it would be all over Digg and she would've been obliterated here.
However, I don't think that this picture about "OMFG, 1 star missing!!" is important at all so therefore, Digg is a biased liberal site. There are plenty of other sites biased for the Republicans, so this just evens it out.
If you don't believe Digg is biased - why would you bury this comment? That's a genuine slip up, just like the people holding the flag is a genuine slip up. - CVL4317, on 09/06/2008, -15/+33the stars configuration is 9 8 9 8 9 8 ... not the 6 5 one.... so.. IraQ as 51st state?
- larawaym, on 09/06/2008, -2/+18I hate that I'm doing a wikipedia paste, but please, JFGI.
51st state, in American political discourse, is a phrase that refers to territories considered candidates for addition to the fifty states already part of the Union. Before 1959, when Alaska and Hawaii joined the U.S., the term "the 49th state" was used. Less often, "51st state" refers to countries which are, or are perceived to be, under U.S. control or influence.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/51st_state - CATSCEO2, on 09/06/2008, -1/+17http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:US_flag_51_star ...
The one in the photo matches the 51 star flag, I think its real.
EDIT: if you look closely, you can see the left is slightly folded, almost obscuring one of the stars. I assme that the guys hand is crumpling the flag and hiding another star. - N8ThaGr8, on 09/06/2008, -2/+17The 50 star american flag has NINE rows of stars, 5 rows of 6 stars and 4 rows of 5 stars. The 51 star flag which has already been designed (flags are designed way in advance in case new states are admitted into the U.S.) has SIX rows of stars, 3 rows of 9 stars and 3 rows of 8 stars. as you can see in the pic, the flag has 6 rows, making it a 51 star flag, the mans hand is covering up two stars. Weird.
- VenDrake, on 09/06/2008, -6/+203 rows with 9 stars = 27 stars
3 rows with 8 stars = 24 stars
-------------------------------------------
27 stars + 24 stars = 51 stars - loqqq, on 09/06/2008, -13/+27Digg--Where emotion trumps truth and logic.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -15/+27Proof that Digg is broken.
- BobScratchit, on 09/06/2008, -1/+12I was thinking the same thing about the flag. Last convention (can't remember which party) Puerto Rico delegates were on the stage pleading their case for statehood. It could be a flag that they brought to try to warm us up to the idea. I don't see why they aren't a state right now. Their population puts them between Kentucky and Oregon.
- CATSCEO2, on 09/06/2008, -1/+11and the 51 star: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:US_flag_51_star ...
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+11what do you expect from a chinese made flag? It probably has lead in the thread.
- Joeymarshmallow, on 09/06/2008, -1/+10The left side of the flag is also folding over a little bit... there could easily be another star hiding there. Compare it to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Us_flag and the difference in pattern is obvious.
- jonnyboy1544, on 09/06/2008, -6/+15Umm no... Olberman would have picked up on that. He knows all!
- harbon, on 09/06/2008, -5/+14Better count again, then.
- dan222555, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9Is that X-Ray vision you're using? Superman is that you?
- geoffg, on 09/06/2008, -13/+22Proof the Digg activists have officially lost it.
- vince215, on 09/06/2008, -7/+1551st state- State of ignorance
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -1/+9So why is this on front page again? It's puerto rico delegation, move along
- willsmatt, on 09/06/2008, -2/+10wait. who ***** pauses the TV to count the stars on a flag.
- simX, on 09/06/2008, -2/+9@GB570: Uh, no, the guy's hand must be covering up *2* stars if it's the 989898 pattern as jsand42 suggests.
- FuriousGopher, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7No, but I noticed the 'pixelation' on the entire photo from a poor resizing and compression
- triggerfinger, on 09/06/2008, -5/+12Probably made in China either way
- Pake, on 09/06/2008, -2/+8Even if that was the case (which it is not), they are using an inaccurate flag since the official pattern is five rows of 6 stars and four rows of 5 stars.
As some other have said, this could be someone wanting Puerto Rico as a state and is displaying that flag. - xavyre, on 09/06/2008, -6/+12That Fox piece states incorrect information in it's last sentence. Burning is the only 'suitable' method of disposal. Their website where they sell the flags is wrong. Not that you can count on Fox to report accurate info.
- mllind, on 09/06/2008, -1/+7Anybody who truly knows his or her own country's flag should recognize a different design. Either these people are trying to make a statement about Puerto Rico or something, or they bought it for some kind of discount and figured, "Hey! It's only the symbol of our country! Who cares if it's a bit off!" I think this kind of disrespect to Old Glory comes from the constant overuse of the flag in American culture today. The kind of overuse that violates the Flag Code when displaying it. It's cheapening the symbol, and I for one am disgusted that something that should be viewed and admired is now only glanced at in this culture of pseudo-patriotism. If you really love America, respect the symbol and count the damn stars so you don't look like a perfect example of what's wrong with this country on national television!
- GB570, on 09/06/2008, -5/+11jsand42 is right the rows are 9,8,9,8,9,8. The guys hand is blocking 1 of them. Just look at the pattern.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6Best submission EVER! Even make the Front Page, AND got the inaccurate title!
How I wish I had more than 10 minutes for Digg today! - roxgod666, on 09/06/2008, -4/+9Why do people even care about this *****. Even if there is 51...so
- bagboyrebel, on 09/06/2008, -2/+7A speaking error (saying 50 instead of 40) is a very easy mistake to make, and much easier than putting an incorrect amount of stars on a flag.
- DougChristian, on 09/06/2008, -2/+7A brain.
- DougChristian, on 09/06/2008, -2/+7Come on people! There's nothing strange or weird here. If you're counting the stars and arguing the count you're being foolish. That flag is a known flag. It is not the flag of the US but the flag we will adopt if we grant statehood to another territory. It is used commonly by people in territories like Samoa, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, etc to display their political support of statehood. Discussion over. Jeesh!
- Craftkiller, on 09/06/2008, -2/+7u cant see all 51 stars but you know of the existence of that 51st star using the pattern... count the number of stars in each row.... alternates 8 and 9 stars so that top row actually has 9 stars (2 obscured by hand)
- diggenerate, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6If you look at the flag it has 3 rows of 8 stars and 3 rows of what looks like 9 stars which would make it symmetrical, which is why the submitter said that there were 51 stars.
A real flag has 5 rows of 6 stars and 4 rows of 5 stars totaling 50 stars, so this flag does have 51 stars. - Phocion55, on 09/06/2008, -10/+15This is too obvious for the mediocre liberal minds on Digg on comprehend.
Buried for blatant common sense......this is clearly evidence that McCain and Palin support international Pokemon card counterfeiters.....that are racist.
Don't ask me how I know.....all I'll say is that I read it on The Huffington Post. -
