However, most places keep the coffee crazy hot to compensate for all the ***** (milk, sugar, cream) people load into it. This means for those of us that don't add things to our coffee, we get a scalding cup. I wish places would have a separate pot for people who don't add milk/cream, and keep it at a reasonable temperature.

It's a total piece of *****. Basically, it ends up making a huge mess, with coffee leaking out when you try to put it in the "cooling area" or whatever it's called.
Rather than buy one of these, I suggest learning how to enjoy regular coffee at its natural temperature, and not being some ***** who has to order one of those "luke-warm, half decaf, half regular, soy frozen frappe latte caramel fizz swirl mocha." - Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From the FAQ:
"The “tip and cool” setting is designed to work best when the mug is completely full. Once the mug is 3⁄4 or less full, use the “sip” setting. By this time the main coffee should have reached a palatable temperature."
Since the "sip" setting bypasses their magic device and acts like a regular mug, in reality you're paying for an entirely new travel mug to ensure that you drink the first 1/4 of your cup of coffee at the proper temperature.

- rolandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A teacher who is a friend of mine had done a similar project a few years ago. The usual container has a layer of air in between to layers of plastic to provide isolation.
The secret of my friends mug is to use a material that melts at the temperature you want to stay. Like beeswax (melting point around 60ºC). The reason to use this material is because the melting beeswax retrieves heat from the hot coffee; however, when the beverage has cooled below the melting point, the solidifying substance provides heat to the beverage.
So, by using beeswax as an isolation layer, you speed up the cooling down process to the temperature you want the product to have, but you slow down the cooling process below that temperature.

I drink 12 cups of coffee a day and I can't say I have an issue with this... get a travel mug and put your cofee in at the temperature you like it.... if you're not a cheap b*stard your travel mug will keep it there for several hours... cofee never lasts several hours :P

check out http://blazinbeverage.com/ which replaces the corrugated sleeves and plugs into your lighter. I hacked mine to run on USB, but it keeps the coffee at the temperature I like to drink it at, without weird temperature control chambers and cooling zones. Totally agree with you - I got two of these back when they first came out and they do not work as advertised. To get a tight seal, you have to tighten the lid beyond the alignment marks which then puts the openings out of alignment. Otherwise, the liquid leaks through the seal if you align the marks. It such a simple concept that it amazed me that I actually had to email the mfg to find out what the hell I was doing wrong. In the end ... I was doing it right, it just doesn't work as intended.
Plus, as you drain the beverage you have to tip it further and (since you can't see the actual level of the liquid) you inevitably wind up with some spilling out the air hole.
I think anyone who raves about these things being great either hasn't seen one or is a shill for the company. Great idea, poor execution. - leep80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude, the lid has a three position switch to load coffee into the cooling lid and then to drink. Seems excesive to me.

- TheMadRonin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought two of these last year. One for me for tea and one for my wife for coffee. It's a good idea, but in practice it doesn't work as advertised. The way the mechanism works, if you don't tilt it just right you get next to nothing per sip. Plus the metal ring around the top gives your beverage a funny taste. Not sure if it's stainless steel or not.
Our Brugos have been put on a shelf at home and been replaced by a pair of OXO Good Grips Click and Seal Travel Mugs. You'll be drinking your coffee and think that it's not going to leak then bam, just before the big meeting it takes a coffee piss down the front of your shirt. I was going to give them as gifts, but I'm saving them for people I don't like.

- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also have an OXO Click & Seal mug at work - it's easily the best coffee mug I've owned. The only downside I've found is that it's a bit hard to clean inside the sealing mechanism.

The cooling does work, but if you like to drink more than a little sip at a time, it's not worth it. Plus, I look like an idiot swirling my coffee around. One HUGE downside, when you tip it upside-down, it leaks. My friends does this too so it's not a one time fluke.

I think what they're going for is that the slower line you are referencing represents the coffee in the lower portion of the mug. The coffee you drink (from the upper container portion) immediately jumps down to the PTZ. What they're going for is that the rest of your coffee remains hotter longer instead of going through PTZ and getting too cold.
