sorry...couldn't resist with a title like that - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i was actually surprised at the quality of content in this article, nice find.
- skored, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think this sums it up best: "In short, think big or don’t bother." Dugg
- MurderMystery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's O.K., I forgive you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thinking is always a lot easier than doing, yeah, I could have thought of a better direct quote...
- BoneyB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm, it was just a coincidence!
@ "There are many more instances of the misattribution of common quotes like this one."
It is pretty remarkable how many commonly written quotes are attributed to the wrong person, even in trusted publications. - tribality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In the podcast Quotiki - The Fun With Quotes show #8, they talk about P.T. Barnum and this misquote. Pretty funny stuff.

Was this submission perchance inspired by my comment here?: http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/*****#c4734994
or is it pure coincidence? I myself stumbled on this same exact page while double checking Barnum as the quote source. Too bad I didn't think to submit it as well. Very interesting story and a surprising twist on a commonly accepted quote. There are many more instances of the misattribution of common quotes like this one. Fascinating subject in it's own right. Dugg. - BoneyB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, I have noticed a few of his stories have gotten buried here before, I'm not sure why.
I do know that after subscribing to him I am MUCH better at making websites; accessibility and usability aren't just about Web standards and coding--the language you use pretty much dominates how much value a site offers users. - ryanholiday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Robert Greene ( http://www.powerseductionandwar.com) write a ton about Barnum's strategy in the 48 Laws of Power. The dude is a genius, who would have thought? I always figured everyone involved in the circus was a freak.
- neuromute, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You have to look at it in a historical context. At that time, the "humbug" (hoax) was very much in demand, and the public very much a willing participant.
It helps if you have a working knowledge of history. - howiloved, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1but the events he held were sold as being real. most of it was fake. i guess you're too dumb to tell the difference, eh? /having to correct and idiotic comment
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah! Damn him and his fake stuff. Come to think of it all the fiction I read, the movies I watch, and the song lyrics I sing along to; those are all fake as well! I'm being ripped off left and right. Damn entertainment and its fakeness straight to hell! /sarcasm
- howiloved, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Barnum ripped off so many hard working people into paying for something that was fake. He was crooked.
