- Axas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+146I nominate you to go put it out.
- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+125The movie Silent Hill is based on this place.
The games... not so much... xD - demonotaku, on 10/12/2007, -3/+114No, but from your name I can assume that you are.
- Zakhran, on 10/12/2007, -3/+104Second that motion.
- Mikesnav, on 10/12/2007, -4/+94Motion Granted.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -10/+95Straight out of silent hill.
- techmoney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+75Looks like a good place to build a geothermal powerplant.
- pikpikcarrotmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+68Ashland? They're just asking for it!
- JOjimBO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66Or build a town next to it made out of pork and barbecue sauce.
mmmm... - pikpikcarrotmon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+68Hell hath no fury like a coal mine scorched.
- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40You guys are crazy we don't even have a quorum.
- raynar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38For tonight....WE DINE IN...umm...CENTRALIA!
- Aeaus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42Of course, this is not an ecological disaster or a cause of improper management, no, of course not. 250 years is a long time and a lot of coal to burn through, I wonder if they could develop a way to stop the fire, one would think that it would burn it self out when it used up all the O2 underground, but apparently not.
- jbird32275, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36This place is absolutely desolate...the satellite image only shows two Starbucks. Damn shame.
- Wacer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33A majority of the oxygen on Earth is in the crust so when the coal heats up the ground it uses the released oxygen to feed itself. Kinda like a nuclear meltdown but its coal instead.
- JOjimBO, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23From the title of this article I was expecting pictures of a Walmart superstore.
Maybe they are just the apendix of hell... - demonotaku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Too bad that there is a good chance that anything built there would collapse. Why do you think the government tore down 90% of the buildings?
- DocBoss, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23yay
- dreamxtime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20And imagine how central Pennsylvania would look as a sauna.
- kRITek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Yeah, because Pennsylvania is so close to the ocean.
- demonotaku, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19There have been TONS of different attempts to put it out over the years. From flooding the shafts, to pumping the foam to put out fires into it. Unfortunately none of it has worked. Just when they thought they were out each time, the fires broke through and found other parts of the coal vein. It will probably just burn out when it runs out of coal. Whenever that is>.>
- LaSepultura, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Spartans! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty!
- gfixler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17It's important to note that we didn't start the fire. It was always burning, since the world's been turning.
- dreamxtime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Someone told me that when things smolder, water turns to steam and runs away.
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@ demonotaku - Because leaving +30 abandoned buildings in the middle of nowhere would result in a lot more safety issues than them just collapsing. (squatting, bored teens, etc)
- mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Yea, for what they did to that poor little girl...
- Pissoff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Frickin sweet, that's how.
- demonotaku, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21Bwahahaha. That is like 20 minutes from my house :D
- mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I wouldn't say "plot", but yeah, Silent Hill in the movie was based on Centralia. Silent Hill in the original games wasn't.
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@ NikoKun
It’s not illegal to go there, and even if it were, there’s no enforcement. Nearly any time of the year you might consider visiting there’s bound to be someone else out there. It’s pretty safe, as long as you don’t romp around inside vents or piss off the locals.
I’ve been there several times and was planning another trip in spring. (I’d share my pictures but my site is down due to bandwidth issues) It’s an interesting visit, if only to experience true mining towns (like Ashland & Mt. Carmel) if you haven’t been exposed to them.
A trench stopped being feasible along time ago. They tried it before but delays in the schedule and lack in budget caused the fire just to travel below and around the trench. Doing it today would probably cost billions. Funding would be near impossible, considering national funding is so low and there are thousands of similar coal fires nation wide.
The best method would be to pump foam into the vents to smother the fire. It wouldn’t vaporize on contact with the fire (like when they tried to pump water in) and could stay for a long time to provide a larger time frame to fight the fire. The only problem is that the foam would have to be environmentally safe or it would eventually find its way into the groundwater and contaminate it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I've been to Centralia many times, it's not that scary or dangerous. "Mouth of Hell" is definitely over dramatic. These pictures pretty much cover every interesting thing that is there. It does have atmosphere, but that atmosphere isn't scary, more like depressing and sad.
- loker269, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Embrace the Silent Hill movie was in fact inspired by this town....(not the games)
and demonotaku the latest reports say there is enough coal to burn for at least the next century.....they are worried that it is going to spread to near by towns like Ashfield too! - somewhatchewy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10The Mole Men have got to be pissed. That or they're the ones keeping it going. *puts on tin foil hat*
- mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The director got the idea from this town
- loker269, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10sorry I meant Ashland....not Ashfield.....(played too much Silent Hill LOL)
- ezran, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Awesome idea!
All they need now is plenty of water, and they can mine the energy...
It may become the model to harvest energy from coal cleanly in other places.
- LaueOfficer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Damn you Darwin, stop slacking and kill this boy!
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No it was "Nothing But Trouble" with Dan Ackroid and Demi Moore.=)
- gaiden2k5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think i looks more like some from the old town of Diablo 1
- mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yea... they should have based the movie on the games :)
- 72Devilz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think we need to approve an investigation committee on this issue so we can have more information before we vote on @snakesonasam's motion. I move that we table this issue untill next months meeting.
- wheresjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's what happens when you trust a banker...now where's Eldona with my hot dogs?
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -3/+9I am Captain Crunch.
- dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I liked the damn interesting article better
http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=479 - doshindude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've been there..
and i've walked around the area where the vents pop out of the ground.
now that i look back on that, i'm surprised that i did something that dangerous.
that town has a creepy atmosphere beyond belief... - Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It wouldn’t work. Simply put, the nature of the fire isn’t strong enough to result in enough energy output for it to be economical feasible.
- mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6...but... one thing they didn't tell the town's new citizens... it's haunted...
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because people always obey the law...
- Zatko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I used to drive through this town going up to Bloomsburg University all the time. I was actually stuck in the town for a few hours during a snow squall in the middle of the night. Had a RWD truck that couldn't get out of town.
It was interesting to see the town degrade year after year... more roads closing , more buildings razed, etc. - teamgwho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5having walked the smoldering road and driven around the town with tons of foundations where houses used to be, and walked in the former landfill surrounded by smoke that comes straight from ordinary l;ooking dirt, and wandered thru the cemetery where smoke wafts thru like fog despite it being sunny and warm I can say "the mouth of hell" is completely apropos.
there's also tons of abanded cars in the woods and cracked concrete roads that become dirt roads that becomes dirt trails then get so narrow only atv quads can pass and you have drive back in reverse for lack of room to turn around properly.
