- sarazen, on 10/11/2007, -6/+126Possum, it's what's for dinner.
- neognostic, on 10/11/2007, -6/+99The photography is amazing, the photographer was able to get up close and personal and show many facets of these peoples lives and surroundings. The peoples faces reminded me of the 1000 mile stare of the people from the depression.
- PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -3/+93because so many pets are homeless.
- clearwaterlab, on 10/11/2007, -5/+87I've seen this before...
- syroncoda, on 11/01/2007, -28/+101its a copy of a thread I've seen before but i like it. these are the people that will survive the coming depression. these are people who are truly free. not bound to anyone or anything but themselves. no debt, no past, only future (as long as they live). some may pity them but i respect their choice in life. they made that decision on their own.
- philliesphan026, on 10/13/2007, -3/+74Mmmm, banana with hot sauce!
- FreakyD, on 10/11/2007, -8/+73How come so many homeless have pets?
- carpespasm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+60because when someone tries to steal your *****, having a dog hear them sneaking up to maul them is a pretty nice thing to have.
- victorman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+58Urban Outfitters Promo
- cindylauper, on 10/11/2007, -3/+58sorry hippie and homeless are not synonymous...thank you for playing
- SiNN4R, on 10/10/2007, -3/+56I frequently considered just dropping out of life and going on the road. I like showering regularly too much though.
- Alfdog, on 10/10/2007, -6/+57"freedom's just another word for 'nothing left to lose"
- FlashGit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+51I give you...DERELICTE!!!
- Crossmenjeff, on 10/11/2007, -2/+50apparently even when dirt poor, cigarettes are still easy to come by. at 4 bucks or more a pack, you'd think they could eat a lot more.
- Rikkochet, on 10/11/2007, -14/+57Yes, thank god we have these brave souls contributing to the advancement of humankind.
I can only one day dream of having the courage to throw away my career and any ambitions at making the world a better place and instead living like a ***** filthy animal and getting my sustenance and material possessions through crime or the charity of others.
Too bad the photographer didn't get any action shots of bearded wild men trying to kill each other over a shopping cart full of moving blankets, or a broken collapsible chair.
*****, I need to get a job in a better part of town. - inactive, on 10/28/2007, -15/+58All I can think of is how bad the womens vagina's must smell.
- fadeout, on 10/12/2007, -16/+57Cool pictures and all but I'd find it hard to believe so many "vagabonds" have extensive makeup done before casually getting photographed lying around. The females, in particular, look like they've been on trips to the MAC counter at their local mall recently...
- PATSCRU, on 10/10/2007, -4/+45not to mention that someone who's screenname contains "voltaire" should have at least some semblance of the definition of vagabond.
P.S. Say what you will about these people, but they look like they live freer than any of us, are mostly happy, and not tied down by the daily drudgery of rent, debt, material possessions, etc. - zyklon, on 10/10/2007, -7/+48This was on Digg about 3 weeks ago.
- silverchrysalis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+45you see these kinds of people often in the Renaissance Faire circuit. Their freedom is almost enviable, but as they age they often suffer poor health and spiraling mental illness, and then have little to no roots put down for help. VD is also rampant. but they enjoy life more than many of us...
- craftyguy, on 10/11/2007, -13/+53The ultimate income tax evaders.
- wageslaven, on 10/11/2007, -4/+43Someone needs to teach that girl basic butchery skills.
Cut the head off. Cut the feet off. Person A grab the fur around the neck, person b pulls the animal down and the skin rips right off.
hese kids will go hungry doing that bad a job. - gordeaoux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40Thanks, Dwight.
- darlyn, on 10/12/2007, -16/+521) This is like the third time in the last few months this had made the front page
2) Most of these kids choose to live like this; you don't need a BA in English to work at McDonald's, practice basic hygiene, and get you self a room. They are as qualified as we are to work at these types of jobs; its their utter laziness that keeps them in this state.
3) Further elaborating on the above, if they can afford cigarettes, pragmatic t-shirts, makeup, funky hairdos, body piercings, and guitars, then they can certainly get afford to live like normal people. - turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35well he isn't going hungry.
- venom8599, on 10/14/2007, -3/+35They're definitely American though. Measurements in LBs on traincars in addition to KGs, English languages on signs and writing in the photos, an American flag, and the Opossum, which is only found in North America.
- weijia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33This pretty much just looks like the hippie residence hall of my college.
Plus or minus a whole lot of hookah. - fantasticFlan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28People had pets before they had homes.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30Free in some respects, restricted in others.
- Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36Only in America will you find homeless people rich enough to live like that voluntarily.
- Alfdog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28Damn you! Now that's all I can think of.
- robotsongs, on 10/11/2007, -13/+34"Smelly caaaaat..."
- drouk1556, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24Hippie, by today's standards, is a cultural fad. Being homeless isn't.
- ccrt6y, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23because pets can be converted in dinner.
- TheEye57, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22So they don't go ***** crazy from being alone all the time.
- vanlawrence, on 10/10/2007, -8/+26cop-out is not freedom. No responsibilities is not FREEDOM, you can't even be adult enough to make your way through life, how can you be FREE? These people didn't choose...their lifestyles clearly reflect a LACK of decision making...that's what happens to you if you just can't decide what to do with your life...you do nothing, then you meet other people who copped out and you all pat each-other on the back and before you know it...everyone thinks they're free. Of these lowly derelicts...very few have truly chosen this lifestyle.
- Schmidtopolis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21Or they have some idealogical reason for not getting the McJob and going to school. To each his own. It's obvious these people don't live off welfare, and don't eat up any amount of tax money, so what's your problem? Not everyone is going to fit in the box of "The American Dream", so let people live alternatively if that's what they want. Does this offend you? Does it scare you? If so, why?
- wootup, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19You do realise that some people CHOOSE to live as "vagabonds," no? I think about it often, and that is coming from a middle-class university graduate with a steady income and a reasonably promising career.
Somehow, earning money by staring into a computer monitor all day and living an isolated, detached, boring modern life does not seem particularly exciting to me. Hitting the road could offer adventure, travel, meaningful social relationships, and challenges more interesting and compelling than "paying the rent" or "meeting the deadline". - PATSCRU, on 10/10/2007, -8/+24they don't evade income tax, they just live below/above taxation. They don't see the need for any of that jazz, don't have any credit or identification, and live very modestly in abandoned buildings amongst other like-minded folks. kinda puts things in perspective...
- mrgreenjeans, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20the other white meat
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Did you miss the dumpster dove shopping, the butchered possum or the banana + hotsauce?
Id say they feed themselves as best they can without much help. - kissedbypixis, on 10/11/2007, -8/+23i thought the point of western civilization was so that we didn't have to live like that.
this seems like a bunch of hipsters who ran out of things to rebel against. - praveenmarkandu, on 10/10/2007, -7/+21says the guy probably sitting in an air conditioned room in front of his computer eating a big mac.
/no offense - segovia101, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Jack Kerouac on the road, nice. I've worked in factories, building sites and offices all my life. I'm tired of commuting for an hour on a train with a bunch of ***** to sit in a room with another bunch of ***** doing some pointless ***** job. Iiving free (with maybe some better skills for self sufficiency) would be ***** great. No more internets, yay. No money for the odd book, guitar strings and cigarettes though, living free isn't really possible unfortunately.
And to all those who say it's a ***** dream, what's yours? To work your ass off to get ahead so you can buy more crap that won't actualy make you happy until one day you realise you've wasted your ***** life? House with crushing mortgage, 2.5 kids, dog, picket fence, 9-5 job you hate but can't leave, mid life crisis etc etc. Nice dream, but sorry, your life won't be like that; I forgot you are special. - Pake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I can eat Tabasco sauce on anything. Hell, I even drink it straight from the bottle quite often, but a banana... WTF?!
- MikeMcG, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17"Hey, buddy, got a smoke?" Cheap as free cigarettes!
- bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16These types of comments assume that they have any obligation to begin with. No such obligation exists. You are mindlessly carrying on your life in this comical pursuit of ambitions and "making the world a better place" to do what? Are you not going to die now because of your job? Your existence on this earth, like theirs, will have been completely forgotten within 2 centuries. No one will know who you are, that you even lived, and you will have had no impact on anything. Had you existed or not existed, there will be no noticeable difference.
Don't kid yourself, your life is as insignificant as theirs. - fantasticFlan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Amazing doesn't necessarily mean good, all the hardships you describe make this pretty damn amazing.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15It is amazing, being able to just live that way outside of society. No need for a job, or education, just living life.
