Now THAT'S a wave. - MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+84Here's a great article about Teahupoo:

And for bonus points, a view from underneath:
http://worldprosurfers.com/what_lies_beneath_teahupoo.htm - skored, on 10/12/2007, -2/+72Damn - that is a sick picture. Craziest part is how none of it seems to be breaking - just a complete wall of water...
- stan205, on 10/12/2007, -3/+70@pcgeek101
Of course the camera had a waterproof case. Do you honestly not understand how this works? - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+63@dracostimpy:
"You call that a wave? "
That was pretty awesome.
By the way, am I the only person that finds it extremely satisfying to see eBaumsworld.com content on youtube/google video, since they have a long standing reputation for stealing content? Always makes me smile to see something they stole on another site, thus giving them no ad revenue. - euphemizeme, on 10/12/2007, -9/+60It certainly is cool, but I'm burying all articles that use the word "Ever" from now on. sorry
- Gifted619, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45Below that wave are some of the most jagged and sharp reefs on the planet, it is also very shallow near that break so you must be an advanced rider to attempt surfing Tahiti, thats why I stick to jumping in puddles and yelling cowabungaa dude!!
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -7/+50Looking at that photo made my reptilian brain want to poop its pants.
- corywingerter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40Here's a frame by frame of Laird Hamilton on what's considered the heaviest wave ever ridden at Teahupoo:
http://www.tim-mckenna.com/porfolio-gallery-1-teahupoo.html
He had to get towed in via jet ski for that too. Paddling into something like that just doesn't go over well. - Retuow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35This is a pic of thesame wave a few seconds later, where it's beginning to break: http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g105/onkenator/myspace/teahupoo.jpg
- reefsurfer226, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34their reasons are not that good and are denounced and explained later in the thread....
and as for the impossible physics they mention... well obviously they don't know how waves react when moving from deep water to a shallow reef...
they are just a bunch of nerds that think its impossible because they have spent 1 day at the beach with SPF 90 on under their umbrella waiting to go home to their computers - kehvin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20It's odd. I have my Personalized Google Homepage set up so a Digg and Reddit module are next to eachother. More often then not, the same front page items are showing in both modules at the same time.
- corywingerter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19@pcgeek101 (and adding to stan205)
Tons of photographers sit in boats the channel that's just passed that wave and get their shots. The wave has a very predictable break and doesn't stray off it's reef much. You can take your boat and there without getting caught up in the wave. It's rare that you see the photographer sit in the wave (and not in the channel), because the reef that's directly below is pretty intense. - SuperOmegaSlack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20It's not photoshopped... Teahupoo is the heaviest break that's been surfed in my opinion. It looks so crazy because the wave travels through deep water, then hit's a VERY shallow reef shelf. Normally waves have time to form to nice bumps on a normal slow sloping ocean floor at most beaches, this is basically a ton of water being tossed onto a shallow ledge. there are tons of pictures of this break and they all look amazing...these guys got balls riding that!!!
- Kbiscu1t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHL_sVLRHII Teahupoo 28/07/06
- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Great find, MrBabyMan. That is the best surf pic I have ever seen.
- kahakauai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's 1000 times heavier when your there... Its like the whole ocean folds over at once. Probably one of the most amazing things you would ever see
- 5150photo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This video is a few months old but this guys almost get hit by the very jet ski towing him in at Teahupoo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3n5xSiED6s - briangig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10am I the only one who is terrified of waves like this? I live right by the ocean, in new england, so in the fall we usually have heavy surf from the hurricanes passing by. I used to be into body boarding, and I think the largest wave I ever rode was probably 18ft...and I was terrfied the whole time I was out there.
- litolist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I highly recommend watching the surfing documentary "Riding Giants". Towards the end, they talk about Hamilton confronting Teahupoo.
- flippedcracker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"I highly recommend watching the surfing documentary "Riding Giants". Towards the end, they talk about Hamilton confronting Teahupoo."
Billy Hamilton is asked "What is it inside him that lets him do that?" about Laird. his answer: "It was the third testicle we had added at birth." - JROCKinAK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9yeah sorry about that, I don't know much about surfing
- culebra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I have to disagree that this was photoshoped. I remember this photo in Sufer Mag a while back 1999 or 2000? It was the one with "Duke" on the cover. I remember turning to that page and just about ***** my pants. (Now not that the above is proof it's not photoshopped). There are lots of videos of this break and you can see the same thing over and over again on video. Truely amazing. And to the guy above who says this break is not life threatening you're wrong. That is a very very dangerous break, FAR more dangerous than pipeline and I'd say even more dangerous than mavericks. The size and speed of the break combined with the shape and very shallow reef below make for a dread surfer if you fall.
- picardo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"VAYA con dios!!"
--someone who uses proper Spanish. - adraft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The research has been done for you in the earlier comments, it's real. There's even a picture taken a few seconds later, please read all of the posts before you say something.
- obiethedog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Shane Dorian up and went Laird make like a fool. His waves at teahupoo are beyond compare. This is considered the craziest wave there. http://www.surfersvillage.com/gal/pictures/dorian0944tah05karen_l.jpg
- misterhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That wave, teahupoo really has kinda changed surfing in the past 5 or so years. Guys are starting to surf these mutant waves called "slabs" (even though teahupoo isnt considered a slab), because they usually come out of very, very deep water to a very shallow, flat, and BARELY submerged rock/coral reef.
Anyways, if you found the picture interesting, check out some of these
1. First wave is at 40 seconds, and watch the whole video to see some of the...consequences. These guys jsut had a documentary released that was narrated by Russel Crowe, with a major hollywood motion picture based of the doc. in the works
http://youtube.com/watch?v=dFKAzlNcC3o
2. This is a helmet cam of a guy surfing in Indonesia. Not really crazy mutant waves, but if you've never surfed before this gives you a great shot of the surfers POV. You also get an idea how shallow it is.

If you guys think any of these are neat/interesting let me know. I can dig up a few more videos that you guys will find interesting. These are just some that I've seen recently that get a pretty good response from people who don't surf. - r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Dude, that's windsurfing not kite surfing. Kite surfing uses an actual kite, whereas windsurfing uses a board with a sail.
- Ades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's no wave, that's a space station!
- sobe86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ahawks, but surely having the ebaumsworld logo on all these videos is just free advertisement for ebaums? They probably uploaded it to google video themselves.
- joshutk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here's the documentary litolist and flippedcracker recommend a few posts up:
"Riding Giants"

Thanks... I recalled that from an IMAX show I saw on PBS a while back. The helicopter filming it was actually below the crest of the wave to get some of the shots. Totally kick ass show if you can find a torrent or whatever. Here's the link to it on PBS:
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/conditionblack/
Here's an interview with Ken Bradshaw, the lunatic who surfed that monster:
http://www.forbes.com/global/2004/0510/078_print.html - vanscott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6somehow Ibanezfoo, I don't think you need to worry about that line-up. The guys there are amongst the best surfers in the world and nobody is going to be pissed if you're paddling into it.
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11In Tahiti!!! I'm moving there this summer! :) Something tells me I'm gonna have a good time. Nice picture btw
- Fennmacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We're gonna need a bigger boat
- Sp0rAdiC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did you read any of the comments? Any of them at all?
- dypeterc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3teahupo'o is one of the coolest breaks in the world. anyone know if any chicks have charged it during a decent swell?
- digid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The photographer is Peter 'Joli' Wilson
- wallyworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Billabong Pro is held at Teahupoo ("Chop-poo") first week in May. You can get on a boat quite cheaply - ten bucks or so and go out and watch for an hour. I was there in 2005. This isn't a big day at Teahupoo but yeah it's a killer wave (left) that sucks off a shallow reef. People die here.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's real. Every surf video ever has this break. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3EDE9Dk5Ew
It sucks up so much water, the base can move below sea level. - semengilligan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That pic is a few years old still one of the craziest pics i have seen
waves break OVER reefs, sandbars, whatever above sea level this one breaks below sea level and the reef forces the wave to break pushing water into the oncoming wave causing the wave to break from the bottom not like a typical wave that breaks from the top of the wave
someone said it feels like the whole ocean is falling on you when you wipe out - Volatile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why? I understand that it's a bit annoying, but the image IS cool and the title is almost accurate. It seems petty to bury an image based on the word choice of the submitter. You're digging the article/video/image, not the person showing it to you, or the way he or she presents it.
- whoaback, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those orange things in the water that look like buoys are actually some dudes balls - gotta show 'em before you get into the line up
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lol i have that picture framed on my wall
-_-' - calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Part of the fun is riding the wave scarred to the point of having your stomach in your mouth, but pushing on anyways. It's a huge thrill some enjoy, but others hate.
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looking at the link corywingerter posted, in a couple shots you can see under Laird Hamilton's surfboard a pole thing that sticks straight down from the tail. What is that thing?
- Gunite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is completely insane, how do they not die?! Should be a good documentary.
That second video is sweet as well. - kettle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a scanned spread from a ten-year-old issue of surfer magazine. You can even see page creases near the bottom right corner. Give the mag some credit.
- tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's got to be what it was like to look at the tsunami coming into the beach the other day in Solomon Islands
- OMFGmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The waves that are around the Great Barrier Reef are just about the same as that cept bigger.
