- DatDudeWiggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I was stationed onboard the USS George Washington (nuclear carrier), and I'll tell you, the size of these things are absolutely ridiculous. In over four years I never even got to see the whole thing. And this one is bigger!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You guys might be interested in the giant ship built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1851!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isambard_Kingdom_Brunel
It was a full 692 feet long, originally christened "The Leviathan" (later called The Great Eastern) and while nowhere near as big as the tanker in this digg submission was the largest moving man made object at the time and a staggering engineering feat! - OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Most impressive. They need a new unit for volume though like how many Metal Gears it can transport ;-)
- Cartman911, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Uhh DAMN! That's a big frickin' ship! Its hard to get a true sense of scale on that thing!
- Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Biggest diesel engine in the world. It's so MANLY.
grrrr - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4massive ships displacing the world's oceans is the cause of the rising sea level!
- Falldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like the giant "NO SMOKING" sign on the bridge.
What is the building to the left of Taipei 101 in the building comparison picture? - Thex1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If this one every gets built...Wooh!
http://www.freedomship.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I moved to vancouver bc canada for about a year and while I was near north vancouver I saw a ship that was about the size of 2 or 3 football fields and about 70 feet above the water. Now, thats not that big, but being born in a small city, it sure made my head turn.
- nmeadata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I heard the QU2 gets 18' to a gallon of diesel. Wonder how all these do, suppose it's ok unless you have to drive it to work :)
- Managore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Would be nice if it linked to the first page of the article, and not the second page...
- tarmithius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was on the ***** kitty, glad to see a fellow squid here. Our carriers are nothing compared to that behemoth though. The kitty hawk was only 1047 feet long which is almost 500 feet shorter than that tanker.
- Derelict267, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ba Dum Bum Psh?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ok i saw a gallery of one ship, where are the others...
- deuce13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually the Knock Nevis IS the Seawise Giant... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knock_Nevis
- orbit1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! That is absolutely incredible. Totally digging it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How does that work? no really i'd like to know.
It is amazing their size tho. - mamak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The pic showing the relative size against the eiffel tower & the empire state bldg is awsome. Cool perspective.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I recently saw one one of Carnival's super cruiseships docked in San Francisco. There's just no way to fully grasp how huge these things are until you've seen them in person.
- nothing7899, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah.. ok, so the ship is really big, but...
WTF is up with the random google ad at the bottom of the page!!!???

Perhaps the link is somehow relevant to the story, but I'm not about to click that while at work. - jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those who are interested.
The Hellespont Fairfax has a dry weight of 442,470t. On top of that it can carry 235,000 of crude. It's engine capacity is 500,282 cubic inches, and it's consumption is 141/nm, at just under 18 knots.

The poor penguins :( - bibliophobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Impressive, but I thought the problem with big ships like this was that they were extremely susceptible to choppy seas. The stress can be too much for even the the steel hull when ends of the ship are on top of large waves and the middle is only supported by the low part of a wave.
- Managore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.merzo.net/
Not quite, click on the -2000x tab to see the truly largest ships - bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if only jack and rose had hitched a ride on one of these mofos
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually, the Knock Nevis is the largest ship in the world, being 1 504 ft long, 226 ft wide, and weighing in at just under 625 000 tons when empty, 715 000 tons when fully laden with petroleum. To put that in perspective, the Empire State Building weighs about 365 000 tons.
- patto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ships rock
- abramsv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0silly adsense...

thanks for the tip
Avi - myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually, the problem with making bigger ships is that if a tsunami is on the way, the ship needs to be fast enough so that the receding waters don't leave it stranded.
- ryanfelix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Damn! That's a huuuuuuuuuuuge bitch!
- sandiegojoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0eh...they're pretty big........i guess.

http://tinyurl.com/spkxr - Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Thats the second biggest set of boats I have seen in my life.
The first you may ask? Wehell, I think we all know THAT story. - Derelict267, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1If that thing sinks it could cause a tsunami.
