The Awful Truth Behind 5 Items Probably On Your Grocery List
cracked.com — See that banana you're eating? It probably killed somebody! Just kidding, sort of. Bananas don't kill people, people kill people ... over bananas. And soda. And a bunch of other stuff you buy every day.

- GlennLThompson, on 03/03/2008, -8/+89I wasn't aware of at least half of those atrocities. The author managed to focus on the funny, which impressed me.
- edwartica, on 03/03/2008, -8/+24The fact that the author did focus on the funny is pretty impressive. I mean, its not like cracked.com is a humor site or anything.
- GlennLThompson, on 03/03/2008, -12/+2Anger can be funny too. Thanks for taking the time, Sarcasmo.
- moush, on 03/04/2008, -5/+3I thought cracked was a news site, humor sites are supposed to make you laugh.
- kaelyiesta, on 03/03/2008, -4/+24The thing is, once you start learning about history(not the ***** in US public school history books mind you, but real history), you start seeing recurring themes over and over. By the time you read enough you start to be able to predict a lot of these events. I myself knew nothing of the banana issue for example, but before even getting through the first sentence, I knew how the story would go. Business exploits foreign investment of some nation, that nation nationalizes that investment by force, US government intervenes and deposes sovereign nations government with one willing to continue the business interests. Its a story that repeats itself dozens of times around the world during the past 100 years.
- Fxer, on 03/03/2008, -5/+8The Guatemala bit is eerily similar to the attitude the US government has towards Venezuela since nationalist Chavez came to power.
- norman619, on 03/03/2008, -8/+5*****. Sounds like someone doesn't know anything about what's going on in Venezuela and their leader. He's about to start a war with Colombia btw. :-)
- SilentSpyder, on 03/04/2008, -0/+3As much as I hate Chavez (even more now since I'm Colombian) I think his loud mouth will make it harder for the CIA to take him out, since they'll know where it came from. Of course if he nationalizes oil, I'm sure they'll find a way.
- Fxer, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1I'm Venezuelan. And remember that if you stop doing your job, you should be fired. And he is nationalizing oil, he bought majority shares in all transnational companies working in Venezuela.
- norman619, on 03/03/2008, -8/+5*****. Sounds like someone doesn't know anything about what's going on in Venezuela and their leader. He's about to start a war with Colombia btw. :-)

- humperdeath, on 03/03/2008, -3/+3I saw a show a while back on 'how to defend myself against someone holding a banana' . I've got to be off now, I need to find a shrubbery.
- JigoroKano, on 03/03/2008, -0/+4What if he has a stick?
- norman619, on 03/03/2008, -1/+1Use a gun perhaps?
- tomg025, on 03/04/2008, -1/+1not a gun! you have to release the tiger.
- humperdeath, on 03/04/2008, -0/+3Or a POINTED stick!

- carlosglz, on 03/03/2008, -1/+3I love cracked more now than I did before... this takes their observations and hilarious articles to a whole 'nother level! The information being read for the first time by many people, despite the hilarity, is a great way to bring to light the actions our government and corporations take behind our back in third world countries.
- sporg, on 03/04/2008, -0/+2If you were not aware of these things already you have not been using your access to the internet properly. I cant believe I am surrounded by so many ignorant fools......oh wait yes I can.
- ilikefun, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1I am never going to eat ***** bananas again...
- obliviousfool, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1Didn't George H.W.'s Zapata buy United Fruit at some point?
- forteller, on 03/04/2008, -0/+3If anyone would like to read more about the companies you buy stuff from every day you should take a look at http://www.knowmore.org/ It's a wiki/directory with information on the ethics/environmental concerns/etc. of a lot of companies. (Yes, comment abuse, I know, sorry. It's just really important, so I hope you can forgive me)

- dunnylovehun, on 03/03/2008, -0/+94"They were told about the legal doctrine of forum non conveniens, a latin term meaning '***** a third world farm worker.'" I'm pretty sure most legal terms translate approximately to that same general sentiment.
- johndi, on 03/03/2008, -0/+17There is legal precedence, now those terms mean "***** the poor." It's also known as the Public Defender equals guilt rule.
- bigfatpaulie, on 03/03/2008, -2/+154So who else is depressed now?
- SuperWinner, on 03/03/2008, -8/+18I was depressed before this...
- yohnstoppable, on 03/03/2008, -1/+47I am. But luckily bananas make me happy, so it's all good
- badgermagics, on 03/04/2008, -10/+3That sounds like you are implying that you are a homosexual.

- rawg, on 03/03/2008, -1/+27I agree. A good example of the author using humor to keep people reading..."several chocolate companies are now selling "Fair Trade" chocolate which is monitored to insure no slave labor is used in its production, though some sophisticated consumers say that chocolate isn't as good, since it does not contain the unique flavor of the bitter tears of children."

- DSizzle, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1The article was longer than it should have been. After reading the first two in full, I found myself skimming over most of the rest to where he finally got to the point.
He would not have needed comedy if he would have wrote the article to appeal to todays "I don't have time for this *****" society.

- yohnstoppable, on 03/03/2008, -8/+272My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana. I said "No. But I want a regular banana later, so yeah"
On a stoplight, green means go, yellow means hold on, red means stop. But on a banana its the exact opposite. Green means hold on, yellow means go, and red means "where the ***** did you get that banana?"
I just realized Mitch Hedberg is probably the all time king of banana related comedy.- wild, on 03/03/2008, -5/+69Mitch Hedberg is the all time king of comedy.

- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/03/2008, -4/+83It really sucks that no matter what, there is almost no escaping corporate corruption. Your food, your clothes, your medicine. It's easy to say you won't be a part of it, but it's damn near impossible.
- cygnus2112, on 03/03/2008, -1/+22Organic. Local farmers or grow your own.
That defeats most of the problem right there.- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/03/2008, -0/+22You get my thumbs up for the suggestions but that just solves food. Even by sitting in front of the warm glow of the internet, you are contributing to some terrible corporations. I know there are steps that can be taken, and I do all three of the options you presented to me. My point is just that unless you want to cut off from society and basically start your own tribe in uncharted wilderness, you are contributing to these types of companies. And I hope no one confuses this as me trying to put every one down saying "look at all of you! feeding the abusive corporations!" this is me actually saying "Damn, for myself, personally, I would really like to disconnect from all of this. But it's just not within reason."
- cygnus2112, on 03/03/2008, -0/+7You make very valid points. My original response was just in context of cracked.com's humorous (and serious) expose. I already knew about Chiquita, but it was nice to be informed of the others as well. I generally curtail any use of products or by companies that have been exposed as having "done bad" and haven't made appropriate reparations. Otherwise, you're right... the only escape would be going Amish or aboriginal.
Not all companies are bad, though. And the general idea is still the same. If you try to support local workers and local industry/agriculture, you know that the products are supporting neighbors and, in turn, supporting you. Buying items from overseas only encourages this type of corporate abuse - although some of the countries are reliant on these jobs to even eek out their miserable existence.
Cheers bro. Good luck with your own contributions and sacrifices.- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/03/2008, -1/+7You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman.
- garfonzo, on 03/03/2008, -0/+4Ya, I'd have to compliment both of you on this discussion. It is difficult living in a corporate/global world where, it seems, everything you do helps promote an unworthy cause. On top of trying to grow my own food and buy from local farmers, I hope to start making my own clothes too (just got a sewing machine recently and made my first shirt). Sure, I'll be buying material from who-knows-where, but it's far better (in my opinion) than buying a pair of GAP jeans for $80 that probably cost $5 to make, and gave some 11 year old 10 cents for making them.
If we all make wise choices, corporations have to adjust because without us, they have no business.
Cheers - JEWestbrookJR, on 03/04/2008, -0/+3Why thank you for the compliments. And making your own clothes is really awesome. I wish I had the time to learn that type of skill. Not just from an economical point of view, but also the chance to make some badass clothes that are exactly to your vision. Maybe you could turn it into a career? Keep me updated! I just may have to buy your brand!
- garfonzo, on 03/04/2008, -0/+3JEWestbrookJR: I definitely had thoughts of selling an ethical (made in Canada by decently paid people) line of clothes and still do. As far as talent - ha! I have none. I just got a pattern from a fabric store and went for it. Turned out pretty decent. I made my significant other a suit for her work and hope to make my own suits too. As we all know a "good" suit can set you back anywhere from $400-$4,000. But, the materials to make one can come in around $50 and you can tailor it perfectly to your size. You should try it, it isn't hard and the worst that can happen is a bunch of mangled fabric.
Cheers!

- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/04/2008, -0/+4Hey! Let's start an evil step ladder corporation! Could be fun.

- InfiniteNothing, on 03/03/2008, -0/+9The sad part is that I think honest goods would almost cost the same if they had the same volume.
- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/03/2008, -2/+7I completely agree with you. It's just that people (especially us Americans) don't like straying from their comfort zone. And your average person won't sway from the brands they are used to for the sake of choosing honest goods from providers that plesge ethical behavior. It's an awful shame.
- int19h, on 03/04/2008, -2/+1You're generalizing too much.
- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1When you are talking about societies or nations, there is no option but to generalize. Of course there are people who make some changes. Otherwise, these people couldn't survive by providing honest goods. But I'm talking about the mainstream here.
- int19h, on 03/04/2008, -2/+1You're generalizing too much.
- AdamGorley, on 03/03/2008, -0/+7I think it's not even an issue of volume, though that is certainly part of it. I think it really comes down to factors that are not calculated in the cost of "regular" (i.e., non-local, GM, and non-organic) foods. For example, is it just volume that allows me to buy fruit from China cheaper than a nearby farm? I doubt it. It is cheap labour, weak (if existent) environmental controls, and heavy subsidies that really make "regular" foods cheaper. We also seldom consider the even less tangible costs such as current and future human and agricultural health issues, political and environmental degradation, and more, that put a strain on society at large.
- mrNesbitt, on 03/03/2008, -1/+7Yeah, it's hard/impossible to avoid everything, but that's no reason to do nothing!
- garfonzo, on 03/03/2008, -1/+4That's a really good way of looking at it!
- sporg, on 03/04/2008, -0/+2It is very difficult to avoid all of the products produced by large corporations. What you can do is research each product that you consume and the company which produces it. Then if you discover that the company is involved with human rights violations and environmental destruction search for a brand that is made by a more reputable source or produced locally. Not all of the corporations out there are "bad" some actually do try to produce quality products in an honest fashion, they just happen to be the exception.
- jkramlich, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1To add to your point it helps if you inform the company why you are not purchasing their products/shopping at their stores. To simply stop giving them money is good. To provide them context as to why they aren't getting your money anymore is better.
- cygnus2112, on 03/03/2008, -1/+22Organic. Local farmers or grow your own.

- mateo60, on 03/03/2008, -4/+26The banana section of the article should've mentioned former CIA head George Bush Sr. owning United Fruit for a time. Convenient that the CIA came to the aid of United Fruit and then the head of the CIA ends up owning it.

- RevoFM, on 03/03/2008, -1/+0http://www.dailydownloads.org/SexDrugs.mp3
Sex, Drugs & Violence, Public Enemy basiclly completely contradicts what you just said.
- ZenMojo, on 03/03/2008, -2/+5With exploding bananas.
- unpolloloco, on 03/03/2008, -4/+15This is the result of monopoly/oligopoly control over markets - barriers to market entry are created, preventing competition from coming in and exposing the atrocities that their competitors are perpetuating. Dole and Chiquita collude by not exposing each other's faults because they are both better off if their secrets are not known. However, if other companies enter the market, they can help to expose the atrocities Dole and Chiquita commit, giving the newcomer a leg up in the market
- Ellipsys, on 03/03/2008, -0/+7Or, if other companies enter the market they'll try and find even more underhanded ways to save money and thus compete with the big, current oligopoly. It works both ways with "the free market". When it comes to people's health the answer isn't "oh, let more companies come in and hope one of them does the right thing, then publicizes it enough to make people care, and manages to sell their product". The answer is in regulation to say "All of you have to stop ***** poisoning people, even if its nice, cheap and profitable".
- unpolloloco, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1Yes, it does work both ways, but in the end, the company that exposes the poisoning ends up best because customers would buy less of the other brands if they knew what was going on
- Gerz1219, on 03/03/2008, -0/+13But most people aren't willing to pay more for a banana simply because it's been picked by an unsterilized worker. Consumers read articles like this, get upset for a minute, and buy the pesticide-laden banana later on in the week. Free markets don't ensure better labor standards, only regulations and pro-union laws can do that.
- unpolloloco, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1thats because consumers feel that it is the role of the government to step in every time - reality is that it can't. The US government has no say over union policy in south America (or at least it doesn't have an explicit say), and we've seen time and time again how screwed up we can make the world by stepping in too much. The consumer is the ultimate decision-maker in what is purchased. Boycotts need to be arranged by powerful people.
- InfiniteNothing, on 03/03/2008, -1/+4You're assuming people would pay extra. They are much more likely to avoid inconvenient truths.
- RevoFM, on 03/03/2008, -1/+0You can't trust a company that sponsors a Disneyland ride.. (Dole)(Tikki Room of Disneyland, CA)
- ronaldinho, on 03/03/2008, -0/+3What Chiquita also has done over the years was basically force the market price of bananas so slow that smaller-scale, independent farmers cannot survive, thereby eliminating even more competition (as well as making those people's lives even more difficult when it is perhaps their only livelihood). Their predatory pricing is one reason why I will never eat any Chiquita bananas ever again
- unpolloloco, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1which means it is, by definition, a monopoly
- Ellipsys, on 03/03/2008, -0/+7Or, if other companies enter the market they'll try and find even more underhanded ways to save money and thus compete with the big, current oligopoly. It works both ways with "the free market". When it comes to people's health the answer isn't "oh, let more companies come in and hope one of them does the right thing, then publicizes it enough to make people care, and manages to sell their product". The answer is in regulation to say "All of you have to stop ***** poisoning people, even if its nice, cheap and profitable".
- yourpalOZ, on 03/03/2008, -10/+1I think there are More important things like overweight Americans killing themselves by eating to death. I lost 20lbs in 2 weeks on the Banana and Coka Cola diet and it really works. Just don't substitute Pepsi, oranges or apples or anything Else you don't have an Axe to grind with.

- chris1012, on 03/03/2008, -5/+14So what happened to Iams after the PETA thing? And why does everyone seem to hate PETA?
- chris1012, on 03/03/2008, -4/+13Nevermind, Iams and PETA can both burn in hell. http://petakillsanimals.com/
- thesonofdarwin, on 03/03/2008, -5/+8I can't argue the numbers without more info, but that site has a very distinct lack of knowledge about how animal shelters work. For instance, they attempt to call PETA out about animals referred out to other shelters and then call in the number of pets PETA THEMSELVES transported. The animal shelters in my area (I work for one) operate in this manner; to reduce the number of pets killed, if one shelter is full and another has room, the shelter who is receiving the animal goes and picks it up. Or, hire independent contractors (or have a volunteer do it in rare cases). Regardless, it's very evident the site creator/group has never worked in a management position at an animal shelter.
One last comment. PETA is not about saving all animals, though it can seem that way how they are portrayed. PETA is about the ethical and humane treatment of animals. Euthanasia, even of healthy animals, is considered humane within the animal rights and veterinary community - with the exception of the extremists, of course.
Unfortunately, there are extremists within every group - activists, religious, and what have you - and they make the others look bad. In PETA's case, they have a lot working against them since their ideals fall WELL within the minority of average humans. Now digg me down :P

- SpeakerCity, on 03/03/2008, -1/+8You're correct that coke bottled in Mexico can't be sold in the US because of franchise laws. However, saying that Coca Cola of the USA is not affiliated with Coca Cola in Colombia is retarded. Its the same company, just different bottling locations.

- Gemfinder, on 03/03/2008, -4/+6For those too busy to click and load the article, here are the offenders in a nutshell: Dole and Chiquita Bananas, Iams dog food, Coca-Cola and Nestlés. I'm embarrassed to say that one of my friends used to inspect their Central California plant before he retired :(
Though the Chiquita Banana thing happened awhile ago (as in the '50s), Dole sprays toxic pesticides on their crops out-of-country. One good reason to get your bananas at Whole Foods, Fred Meyer and Trader Joe's. I was buying Dole fruit juice but this be my last carton of that. It's Odwalla and Dagoba Chocolates from here on in!- sroske, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1dugg for odwalla and dagoba.
- spookyttws, on 03/03/2008, -1/+1Digg me down. But my experience with Odwalla Juice is that its over priced and tastes pretty bad. And if you don't think theres a story like this in just about every large corporation, you are very naive. Maybe not as bad, but there if you are going to boucot a product because of what they did, you better start farming your own food and drink and sewing your own clothes.
- RockMuncher, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1Fun fact: Odwalla's refusal to pasteurize their juices at all and a minor slipup in hygiene at one of their plants accidentally killed an 18 month old girl. Primarily because they 'assumed' they didn't have to test for e. coli at certain acidities. By all accounts, they were horrified and immediately changed their policy, but its a good example of how every company can screw up fatally.
- RockMuncher, on 03/03/2008, -0/+1The Chiquita Banana thing is still happening. They have a habit of paying terrorists for 'protection' which largely includes killing people who try to unionize, kidnapping children and general genocide. The main group they pay is AUC responsible for cocaine trafficking, massacres, and general evil. They also make payments to the ELN and FARC. Anything to keep those bananas cheap and easy to ship.

- carlosglz, on 03/03/2008, -1/+9Just shop at Trader Joes, Whole Foods or Wild Oats... since the majority of the products there are locally produced and the buyers of these companies have a conscience, partly because they know their customers care about these issues, the odds you will buy a fair-wage, honest-trade, pesticide-free, hormone-free, antibiotic-free product are very high.
You will see brands there you never heard of in your life... and that's a good thing nowadays...
- meruru, on 03/03/2008, -1/+23It would probably be easier to list international corporations that don't
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 03/03/2008, -0/+7I've said it before and I'll say it again, the 1950s was a bad time to try to nationalize the chief export of your country.
- jasonqueen, on 03/04/2008, -0/+0I'll be damned! I say that all the time too! I was just telling my stuffed bear collection the other day and we got into a fight... again. You can NOT get me to shut up about 1950's south american export policy! I mean, come on! What's not to love?!
- iamjames, on 03/03/2008, -4/+8The website seems to like PETA enough to include their accusations in the list, and nekked sexy people is always a good thing (I need to find that eva mendes peta ad!), so why does Digg hate PETA? Every comment that mentioned PETA=good has been buried.
- doctechnical, on 03/03/2008, -3/+13Jesus, where to start... did you just get the internwebs today?
1) PETA are hypocrites. They pretend to want to help animals, they wind up killing them.
2) PETA sees no difference between humans and animals. Nazis killing millions of people or KFC killing millions of chickens, they consider the two to be morally equivilent.
3) Do you have a pet? PETA considers that to be slavery. No, I'm not making this ***** up. That includes guide dogs to the blind, if you can believe it.
That should start you off. - SpeakerCity, on 03/03/2008, -7/+5Because people are easily swayed by anti-PETA propaganda. See the above comment.
- skipdog172, on 03/03/2008, -1/+6Here, watch this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTQCQ1eI7Is
Folks like SpeakerCity, above, seem to think that facts are "propoganda". Yes, if you have a pet, PETA truly believes you are putting your pet into slavery. Yes, they really do compare concentration camps to slaughterhouses. Yes, they kill tons of animals. It still boggles my mind how many pet owners think that PETA is this great happy feel good organization... - vervalsing, on 03/04/2008, -1/+6I'm vegan and I can't stand PETA. Ingrid Newkirk is an attention whore and says some of the most ridiculous, stupid things I've ever heard in my life. Plus, their animal shelters do much more harm than good.
- Clumber, on 03/04/2008, -1/+2PETA = Evil. ALF = the militant wing of PETA. HSUS (humane society of the us) is also evil and in NO WAY associated with what most people think of when they hear/read "humane society".. Lessee... how to make a bazillion dollars with virtually no oversight... I know, let's send out sob stories with cute photos of puppies and kittens (War Kittens?) and include a little form for donations... but then not really do ***** to solve the problems we bring up. Every so often they'll expose some horrible thing (recent example the inhumane treatment of downer cattle) that may or may not result in needed improvements in the treatment of animals, but they use their funding for advertising, more fund-raising, and internal management. Not for actually solving the issues. I have been at locations where PETA/HSUS/ALF terrorists have sprayed anti-freeze into dogs' water, turned crated dogs loose because of course dying Hit by Car or starving is so much better than the slavery of being a pet... I love my dogs. They are family members. But they ARE dogs and they do not have "rights". Period. We as people have the RESPONSIBILITY to treat them well and humanely, and treat our food animals as humanely as possible. But they do not have rights.
Well aside from _my_ dogs which will make it perfectly clear that they certainly have the right to take up 50% of the bed when they are less than 25% of the critters in the bed... (that was a joke. Digg is too damn serious today anyhow. Depressing.)

Too bad IAMS doesn't get to go to prison & be demonized. - SpeakerCity, on 03/03/2008, -0/+5I can honestly say I see a change in the food market here in the US. Whole Foods, Trader Joe type stores are on the rise. My neighborhood Vons closed down last year and was replaced by a Henry's. Anyone else have Henry's? Really good meat. People see videos of those poor cows getting forklifted around and read articles like these and don't mind paying a little bit more for food that is ethically produced, healthier, and better-tasting.
- betasp, on 03/04/2008, -1/+3Don't take this wrong... but keep thinking that. Keep thinking the "antibiotic free" means no antibiotics. Keep thinking "free range" is somehow different. I work in the food industry, and those things you are buying give us huge profits. The problem is, they are really less healthy. The animals get less nutrients to eat and therefore cost less to produce. And for what it is worth, if you really are buying locally slaughtered food, the risk of contamination is higher.
I DO agree the unethical treatment of animals and livestock is wrong (there are "humane" ways of putting an animal down."
