The Amazing Gravity Hill! watch!
metacafe.com — This one is located in Braga, north of Portugal. A gravity hill is a "place where the layout of the surrounding land produces the optical illusion that a very slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope. Thus, a car left out of gear will appear to be rolling uphill."

- AngelBunny, on 05/10/2008, -1/+5we have one of these hills around here. growing up my mother would take me on it and put the car in neutral and it would roll up hill. i finally figured out what was going on when I was like 6 or something. it was one of the more fun tricks my parents showed me when I was very young.
- afx1, on 05/10/2008, -16/+8there's a gravity hill in my town. actually it's more of a cliff. and there's not much of optical illusion. here's my truck going "up" the hill: http://preview.tinyurl.com/4sba9a
- afx1, on 05/10/2008, -6/+1wow fail. bury that *****.

- lucutus, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3OK yeah we know what is going on with the hill but even more amazing is the multiple "Engines" in the teeny car. Why no more than a mention of it in the video title "engines off" let's have a look under the hood already!
- PhilLesh69, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1My mom grew up in a town in NJ where one of these hills exists. I've been on it. It sorta, kinda looks like you are going uphill, but if you look closely and have any sense of equilibrium, you realize it is in fact a very slight downhill grade.

- PhilLesh69, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1amazing, this road is going downhill towards an even steeper downhill road. So it looks like it is going uphill, yet, it is not.

- seandoof, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1There's one near Orlando, Florida called "Spook Hill". I went there and tried it and it's merely an optical illusion. Really cool but not magic at all.
- punkcat, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2really? no magic you say?
- stormspire, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0Don't believe this wizard!
- mysedai, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2There's one on TN HWY 62 at mile marker 10 between Crossville and Spring City. There's even a ghost story that goes with it; a school bus died there in the middle of the road, and a tractor trailer came around the blind curve and hit it, killing the children on board. Now, if your car stops there, they will push it up the hill and out of harm's way.
That, of course, is a load of crap, but it's still a fun way to spend a Friday night when you're in high school.
That's two claims to fame this little town has here on Digg. Gravity-Hill and the FSM statue.- MtheoryX, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1That's the same exact story I've heard for at least 10 different gravity hill's. WTF?
- uhhNo, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4It's not anti-gravity, it's gravity. It is clearly an optical illusion.

- uhhNo, on 05/10/2008, -1/+8You don't need one... CARS are able to roll, it obviously isn't level. It's an optical illusion.
- RandomLove, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Well, seeing as the illusion element lays in which way the hill actually slopes--down, when it appears to be up--a level would be pretty apropos at determining that. Not if the the ground is level. Obvi.
- blagoaw, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4If it hadn't already been debunked, we wouldn't be calling it a "gravity defying" hill. We'd be calling it a hill.*
*Ask me about my opinions on magic and the supernatural today!- imacoder, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0Please don't tell us your opinions on magic and the supernatural today! Maybe tomorrow.
- optimuscrime, on 05/10/2008, -5/+2The bubble in the level moves because of gravity. The car is rolling because of gravity. The level will just report information that agrees with the car's behaviour. No new information about what is going on here can be achieved with a level.
I have a feeling that half of the people who responded didn't realize that a level wouldn't help to explain anything.- blagoaw, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Me too. Actually, it's always hard to tell. I hesitated before my "amazing gravity defying level" post, since it's a bit ambiguous as to whether I got it or not. The car is what apparently "defies" gravity due to the illusion, not the hill, and the level would do so as well. The hill just sits there where it's supposed to be. Perhaps that's why the one in New Brunswick (or Nova Scotia?) calls it a magnetic hill. It's more appropriate and less appropriate in a way.
- MtheoryX, on 05/10/2008, -1/+5What part of laying the level on the road, and determining that the road is actually sloping downhill doesn't make sense to you?
Sure, the level would agree with what's going on with the car; however, you would have objective, empirical evidence that it's not "magic" or magnetism pulling the car uphill. And it sure as hell isn't a dozen or so ghost children pushing you from the scene of a decades old accident.- Nescirian, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3MtheoryX:
The level simply indicates the total force operating on the fluid in the level, which if you're holding it still is usually just gravity.
IF there was some other force that was pulling a car up the hill, it would also pull the fluid in the level in such a way as to make it look as though that direction was "down". If the car can be moved by "magic","magnetism", "ghosts", etc, there's no reason the fluid can't.
Just because something is used as a scientific device doesn't mean it somehow has a magical power of truthiness that can't be messed with by other influences on its mechanism.
Having said that, surveying the land around these "hills" has shown it to be an optical illusion. Just don't be so quick to assume other people are ignorant when you're the one rolling on the floor failing out loud.- MtheoryX, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1No, I'm pretty sure the people who would assume it's magic are the ones "failing out loud."
Would it not make more sense to assume there is some logical explanation, then exhaust those explanations first, before jumping to "magic," or should we always just jump to "magic" first?
Yes, marshmallows float because it's magic; I know this because I'm unable to prove exactly why they float, scientifically. - mnocket, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Stops laughing....... Let me get this straight. You discount the use of a level to determine the slope of the hill, but accept that "surveying the land around these "hills" has shown it to be an optical illusion". Just what type of surveying tools are these? They must be pretty special to not fall prey to the same force as the level. Your thinking is flawed. If you trust surveying instruments (assuming you understand how they work), then you must also accept the use of a level for determining slope. ...... resumes laughing.

- MtheoryX, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Been on a lot of slope with a 30 degree grade in a rather tall truck lately? I've never seen a single one that was approved for road vehicle use, much less a "rather tall truck."

- blagoaw, on 05/10/2008, -0/+12When you've got the illusion of infinite energy, who needs energy?
- TsuruchiBrian, on 05/10/2008, -0/+8Yes absolutely there is a way to get infinite energy from this. Just follow these steps:
1. Let the car roll up the hill and hook up the wheels to a generator that will charge a battery.
2. Push the car back down the hill. It will seem really hard and it will feel like you are using energy doing it. But this is just an illusion. It is in fact really easy (because it is down hill).
Repeat several times and you will have charged the battery. Congratulations you have just solved all the world's problems. - TonyLocNE, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5not unless you can turn it into an infinitely downward sloping hill
- skepticality, on 05/10/2008, -3/+10There is another like this right near Wyoming, on the way to Mt. Rushmore. They call it 'Cosmos', you can find more info on it. They actually DO use a level on the tour, it is kind of a fun thing to go see/look at. You can roll a ball, what seems like, up hill. :)
- yellowfish04, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Yep, I've been there many times, pretty fun stuff. Like the guy said above us, it's optical illusions caused mostly by the trees growing at a funky angle

- sherbertbones, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Who ***** cares?
- synystar, on 05/10/2008, -2/+22I think it's actually that both roads are going upwards on a sloping hill but the one on the left is cut deeper into the ground giving the illusion that you are going downhill when approaching it from the other road.
- Neoanarchist, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Thats exactly what I see happening. Both hills are going up hill (towards the front of the car or left at the beginning) only the farther (from the camera) road is sloped slightly less.

- mddawso, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6I think the fact that it's a car is pretty important. Cars can get rolling fairly easily and quickly on a really small slope
- newms32, on 05/10/2008, -3/+0All objects fall due to gravity at the same rate, a slope doesn't change this. The weight advantage of a car is offset by the fact that the force generated has to accelerate that mass. The momentum of a car might be better able to overcome rocks and ruts, but on a smooth surface it will roll at the same rate as a skateboard.
(haven't taken physics in a while, correct me if I'm wrong)- SeymourC, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0slope definitely does affect gravity. Think trigonometry. The slope is the resistance to gravity

- clemsontiger, on 05/10/2008, -0/+11There is a place in the mountains of South Carolina that this happens too. Its funny to tell someone and them call BS on you then you take them there and the expression on their face.
- AMSRay, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6I remember my parents going to this old tourist place when I was kid called Mystery Hill. I thought it was in South Carolinas, but when I googled for it I found that it is actually near Boone North Carolina. They still have the old "Mystery House" where water appears to run uphill and and other pranks and illusions. It's been a tourist attraction for at least 70 years. www.mysteryhill-nc.com

- alasbabylon, on 05/10/2008, -12/+0So I'm in Physics 101 and I'm learning about slides and how objects interact with them. I'm pretty sure the lesson was that if an object is on a frictionless slide, the object will accelerate downwards at 9.8 m/s^2 multiplied by the sine of the slope's angle. In this particular example, we're given that the car is on a slide. Since we're not told whether the car is in idle or not, we must have more information. We don't have the technology to figure out crazy things like this.
- ligyron, on 05/10/2008, -0/+13... it's just an illusion of up hill when it's actually downhill
- alasbabylon, on 05/10/2008, -6/+0Ah ok, that explains everything. Fascinating. That's really quite fascinating. Say, have you ever been on the freeway in the middle of nowhere during the summer, and there's an illusion produced by heat so that it looks like there's water or oil just all over the asphalt? I've heard that the illusion is actually caused by distortion of the light by the heat on the asphalt. It's actually not water at all, but it really does look like it! If you drive an extra 10 miles, you will find out the same thing.
- TonyLocNE, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3You're a ***** tool.
- alasbabylon, on 05/10/2008, -3/+0No I'm not.
- synystar, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Yes really you are. You don't need physics to explain this... just common sense. Both roads are going up hill. If you notice when he turns the camera to the left where the roads meet... it's uphill. When he turns to the right you can see that the paved road is cut deeper into the terrain but the dirt road is still climbing the same hill albeit at much less of a slope.

- afruff23, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6This comment is so funny and sad at the same time (e.g. the state of college education).
- alasbabylon, on 05/10/2008, -3/+0There's a few things I left out. Notably rotational momentum and the fact that cars are never on frictionless slides. However, I'm not sure how your observation that my comment is funny and sad says anything about college education. It would actually say a lot more about the state of university education. Since we all know university education is more better than college edumacation, I'm not even sure what it says about the state of college education. Not all of us are physics majors by the way. I could've told you I never took a physics class in college, and that this is high school physics. After all, this is something you're supposed to learn in high school physics. Looks like you've at least picked up a sense of humor and recognized how none of this is intended to be serious.
- afruff23, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4"However, I'm not sure how your observation that my comment is funny and sad says anything about college education"
I thought you were seriously trying to explain common sense with a bunch of irrelavant information from your physics course to seem smarter. I'm in university-level physics as well BTW. - alasbabylon, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Do you like flux?
- afruff23, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3It's not the worst thing. Electric or magnetic? The integration can be a nightmare because they are all so similar (e.g. gauss's law, faraday's law, integrating electric field to get voltage).
- afruff23, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4"However, I'm not sure how your observation that my comment is funny and sad says anything about college education"

- arobicha, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0That's Grade 11 physics where I come from... And I can vouch that here in Canada we fail the ***** out of our undergrads in first year physics, like we're supposed to. A question like this would be an example of some sort to throw them off.
- alasbabylon, on 05/10/2008, -2/+0Oh yeah? Well that's grade 10 physics where I come from. Not even grade 10. Where I come from, it doesn't matter what grade you're in before the laws of thermodynamics apply to you. I'm pretty sure the applicable one here is conservation of energy. Since the kinetic energy of the car is increasing, and the potential energy is decreasing, it makes sense that the car is going down a slope.
- teesix, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2blah blah, it's an illusion.... defensive much?
- alasbabylon, on 05/10/2008, -1/+0I can be as defensive as i want to be. They say the best offense is a good defense. And vice versa. I never really understand that one, to be quite honest. So I'm defensive much, what are you gonna do about it? Say "blah blah blah" some more and mock me? Like I've never heard that before. Typical much?

- alasbabylon, on 05/10/2008, -7/+0My driveway is actually a gravity hill. It's in one of those peculiar places on Earth where gravity has the inverse effect on mass. If you are trying to play basketball on my driveway, get prepared to do a lot of swearing and cursing because unless you have an Iron Man suit, you're not getting that basketball back.
- Slices, on 05/10/2008, -2/+2you should make a vid, I'd like to see that.
- alasbabylon, on 05/10/2008, -4/+5I actually have an Iron Man suit, wouldn't you rather just see me fly around in that? Honestly, I'm not prepared to do a lot of swearing and cursing. Now, if you want to see what I can do with my Iron Man suit, just watch the movie. All the effects were done by video taping me after directing me to do things. It's actually kinda tame compared to what I normally do in my hero adventures, but it's hard to catch that on camera, you know. Too many G forces for those air-to-air combat fighters that they had to use to film me.
- Slices, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1uh.... sure, just don't get any closer! :-|

- shadowblade989, on 05/10/2008, -0/+7Theres this tourist trap called 'Mystery Spot' that uses this same principle
My grandma made me go there when I was younger and it turned out to be very interesting.
They have platforms that people stand on and appear to be on a slope of like 50 degrees and not falling, etc.
